left margin

2001-09-19 Thread Emre Akbas

Hi all,
Thanks to developers, LyX is a great program!
I have a problem with LyX-code environment. I have to include a lot
of long Java codes in my document. Since the long-lines went off from the
right of the page, i've begin to use listings package. That solved my
problem but still i want to shorten the left margin, is there a way to do
this? ( All of my codes are in appendix section so setting the left margin
for the whole appendix section is Ok with me, but i don't know how to do
it) Thanks in advance.

DocBook compilation problems.

2001-09-19 Thread Yannick Patois

Hello,

I use Lyx to create DocBook and have various problems.
The most serious ones are:

- The INFORMALTABLE bug, already reported, applied a workaround cited in
http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg12688.html.

- An ANCHOR problem I never saw reported.
jade:/home/patois/home/patois/work/userdoc/userdoc/CCIN2P3repositoryConventions.dbook:439:46:E:
end tag for element ANCHOR which is not open
The generated sgml is: anchor id=sec-documentation /anchor
Correct syntax appears to be simply : anchor id=sec-documentation
without any closing tag.

- Bigger problem is again in the table where I got the following incorrect
generated sgml:
colspec colname=col0 align=center/
colspec colname=col1 align=center/

To compile I had to remove the end slash : colspec colname=col1align=center
But I really dont know how to write a simple workaround in the lyx source.

***

There are also cosmetics problems that are worring me.
I changed from LinuxDoc to DocBook because some on this list claimed it
was no more supported. But the generated output (postscript) I got is very
poor compared to the one I had with LinuxDoc.

Some problems:

- No section numbering by default
 - By manually editing some 'docbook-utils.ds' file I was able to add
that again, but I dont know how to tell lyx to use this file instead
of the standard one.

- URL representation is quite strange (reported as note at the end of the
document), there was by default an inline representation of URLs in
LinuxDoc, and dont know how to change that.

- The Date item is not writen on the output document, I wasnt also able to
found how to put a 'Version' item.

Thanx for any help,

Yannick

Figure_floats export error

2001-09-19 Thread Bronek Baraniecki

Greetings for all,

The problem:
1. I have master (main) document and many of "included" documents, each
of one chapter. Almost in every chapter there are many float_figures
(photos). All pictures are placed in one folder eg.
~/bronek/dok/lyx/global/skan and lyx files are under
~/bronek/dok/lyx/global/blabla

2. All figures are in double format --- *.eps and *.png When inserting
figure_floats in Lyx by Insert Figure_floats Figure, I remove
extension .eps leaving plain name of figure name (without dot, as was
edvised here later)

3. When in subdocument (chapter) doing export (or preview) to Latex, or
to PDF, everything is OK. All figures are exposed in xdvi, xpdf or
Acroreader.

4. But, --- when trying to export a master document with all of the
chapters, Latex will complain that there is no of any such figure!

What I shell do? What is wrong?

My LyX ver is 1.1.6fix3 on RH7.1 i686

Lyx eps figure problem

2001-09-19 Thread Praedor Tempus

I have three eps figures for inclusion into a document. I am having a
problem with one of them - when I do a preview with gv or the kghostview (I
use KDE), this particular eps image displays fine but upon inserting it into
my lyx document and then doing a preview or printing it, the top segment is
removed/invisable. It displays fine in Kontour (the KDE graphics app -
formerly killustrator), it displays fine in gv preview but inserting it into
the lyx document cuts the top off.

I have tried various settings on the size/layout - default, setting it so
that it takes up 95% or the height and width of the page. In no case am I
able to get the lyx output to include the small top portion (simply an arrow
with text above it. I even re-edited the figure, moving everything closer
together so that they would better fit a page. No joy.

Any suggestions/fixes?

Hi,

Your problem might well comes from the bounding boxes of your eps.
Have a look on 'cropping an eps figure' thread in this mailing list.

eps, linux, cropping

2001-09-19 Thread Praedor Tempus

Well, it now appears that I cannot do my figures at all in linux, which
sucks. At this point it looks like I will be forced to go to windows or the
mac to do this right.

I am using lyx and kontour, up to now, to make my figures for a paper I am
working on. I export kontour files to eps and viola! Cropped all to useless
hell. No matter what I do to the figure in kontour, no matter what I do to
the bounding box numbers in the eps file itself, my figures are cropped to
unusability.

The postscript version of the figures are fine. Going to eps, which is what
the journals I will submit to require/accept renders the figures into crap.

What is wrong with the linux way of doing eps that doesn't appear to affect
windoze or the mac?

OK, relax and take a deep breath. Take the
original .eps that was working, insert it in a brand new LyX file, and see if
it exhibits the problems in that new file. If so, try to find out if the .eps
file itself changed (backup copies?). If not, exploit the differences between
the two files until you find the root cause.

If you want, you can send me the .eps -- I'll LyXize it with 1.1.6fix1 and

Re: Lyx eps figure problem - solved!

2001-09-19 Thread Praedor Tempus

OK, redfaced, I found the problem. It is in kontour. The figures I created
were done for US letter-sized paper. For some reason, opening up kontour to
edit the images, regardless of the proper/saved size of the paper it sets the
page size to A4. The resulting images were too big for letter-sized paper as
a result.

Once I RE-set the page size to USletter the images properly exported to eps
without cropping.

new lyx question - fonts and line spacing

2001-09-19 Thread Praedor Tempus

On my figure legends page, I am using 14 pt font (larger). I have 3 figure
legends on the first page. The first two figure legend paragraphs look the
same with the same font size and line spacing upon printing. The third
figure legend paragraph, however, looks compressed vs the other two figure
legends even though the font size and spacing are the same. I have tried
many things (going to the next size larger font, increasing line spacing,
resetting the entire document to large font, single spacing and then taking
it back to double-spacing). No matter what I do, the third figure legend
paragraph is compressed - as though it is using 1.5 spacing instead of double
spacing...or like the font is a single point smaller.

Measuring the output with a ruler, the spaces between lines in the first two
figure legend paragraphs is 5 mm for all lines but for the third figure
legend it is 4 mm. It adds up and is obvious to the eye. The first figure
legend does contain some dingbat symbols but not on every line. The second
paragraph/figure legend contains normal text like the third yet the line
spacing is a mm different.

How do I force the third paragraph to use 5mm spacing like the other
paragraphs?

Okay here's another super-duper little tip for using the bullets dialog to
figure out how to embed the symbol of your choice into your document:

1. File-New
2. File-Export-LaTeX
3. copy the exported file to a different directory or rename
4. Layout-Document-Bullets
5. select the bullet you want to use in your document and press OK
6. File-Export-LaTeX
7. compare the previously exported file to the new one:
diff -u previous.tex newfile.tex

You'll see a couple of lines like:
diff -u previous.tex newfile.tex
--- previous.tex Thu Sep 20 13:12:15 2001
+++ newfile.tex   Thu Sep 20 13:12:30 2001

+
 \begin{document}

 \end{document}

The ones we're interested in are the ones with the + signs.

The usepackage line tells us which package the symbol comes from.
So you'll need to add that line to your preamble unless you follow the
alternate suggestion from my previous email of just setting one of the
levels of your itemize bullets to the symbol you want. BTW, it should
always be safe to have multiple usepackages of the same symbol/font
packages so if you change bullets later you shouldn't get any errors
because you have also included that package in your preamble.

The later group of lines includes the latex command we would have seen
provided in the dialog. In this case, \(\Box\).

You then place the LaTeX command into an Insert-TeX in your document.

Another alternative way of finding characters and their packages is to
search your computers online LaTeX documentation for files with character
tables. Browse through the .dvi files in the subdirectories of
$TEXPATH/texmf/doc/.

For example when I wrote the bullet support years ago I browsed through
the dvi files in $TEXPATH/texmf/doc/latex/general/ and looked at all the
character tables there for suitable bullet-like characters. You may find
mention of other things in the $TEXPATH/texmf/doc/latex/base/fntguide.dvi
or $TEXPATH/texmf/doc/fonts/ directory.

Or just get hold of The LaTeX Companion or some other LaTeX book that
has character tables in it.

If you want, you can send me the .eps -- I'll LyXize it with 1.1.6fix1 and
send you the resulting Postscript file and you can see if my setup's doing it

Thanks to developers, LyX is a great program!

DocBook compilation problems.

2001-09-19 Thread Yannick Patois

Hello,

I use Lyx to create DocBook and have various problems.
The most serious ones are:

- The INFORMALTABLE bug, already reported, applied a workaround cited in
http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg12688.html.

- An ANCHOR problem I never saw reported.
jade:/home/patois/home/patois/work/userdoc/userdoc/CCIN2P3repositoryConventions.dbook:439:46:E:
end tag for element "ANCHOR" which is not open
The generated sgml is:
Correct syntax appears to be simply :
without any closing tag.

- Bigger problem is again in the table where I got the following incorrect
generated sgml:

To compile I had to remove the end slash :
But I really dont know how to write a simple workaround in the lyx source.

***

There are also cosmetics problems that are worring me.
I changed from LinuxDoc to DocBook because some on this list claimed it
was no more supported. But the generated output (postscript) I got is very
poor compared to the one I had with LinuxDoc.

Some problems:

- No section numbering by default
-> By manually editing some 'docbook-utils.ds' file I was able to add
that again, but I dont know how to tell lyx to use this file instead
of the standard one.

Figure_floats export error

2001-09-19 Thread Bronek Baraniecki

Greetings for all,

The problem:
1. I have master (main) document and many of "included" documents, each
of one chapter. Almost in every chapter there are many float_figures
(photos). All pictures are placed in one folder eg.
~/bronek/dok/lyx/global/skan and lyx files are under
~/bronek/dok/lyx/global/blabla

2. All figures are in double format --- *.eps and *.png When inserting
figure_floats in Lyx by Insert > Figure_floats > Figure, I remove
extension .eps leaving plain name of figure name (without dot, as was
edvised here later)

My LyX ver is 1.1.6fix3 on RH7.1 i686
Attached is a preamble.

Re: unavailable symbols/special characters?

Hmpf...I tried the dings you mention, they are not the correct ones. The box
and diamond I seek are in the "Standard" list. There is an open/unfilled box
and diamond. Selecting the box doesn't give a proper ding number, it gives
me "\(\Box\)" in the latex window. Inserting this into the appropriate
location does nothing but error out because it requires a number, a number
that selecting the shape doesn't provide. The same thing happens with the
open/unfilled diamond.

Why don't any of the Standard dings/shapes provide proper numbers and only
provide unusable latex commands? Or is there some other preamble command
required?

Re: Lyx eps figure problem

2001-09-19 Thread Praedor Tempus

Now I am fully screwed. One figure that was displaying/printing just fine as
an eps file is now, magically, also being inappropriately cropped. Two
figures are unusable to me because ps2epsi is inappropriately cropping them -
and no matter what I do to the bounding box numbers in the actual eps files,
they remain cropped.

eps, linux, cropping

Re: Lyx eps figure problem

2001-09-19 Thread Steve Litt

OK, relax and take a deep breath. Take the
original .eps that was working, insert it in a brand new LyX file, and see if
it exhibits the problems in that new file. If so, try to find out if the .eps
file itself changed (backup copies?). If not, exploit the differences between
the two files until you find the root cause.

If you want, you can send me the .eps -- I'll LyXize it with 1.1.6fix1 and
send you the resulting Postscript file and you can see if my setup's doing it
too.

How do I force the third paragraph to use 5mm spacing like the other
paragraphs?

lyx & hyperref

2001-09-19 Thread E GCP

Hi!

I'm a LyX newbie and I need some help.
I'm writing a document and would like to use hyperref.
I added "\usepackage{hyperref}" at the end of my LaTeX preamble, but when I
try to export the document to PDF I get two errors, right at the top of the
document.

The errors are:
1) TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [input stack size=1500].
\select@language
{english}

2) Argument of \select@language has an extra }.
\select@language
{english}

What does all these mean? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
egcp

Does anyone know how to change the line weight of a upper or lower paragraph
line?

Okay here's another super-duper little tip for using the bullets dialog to
figure out how to embed the symbol of your choice into your document:

1. File->New
2. File->Export->LaTeX
3. copy the exported file to a different directory or rename
4. Layout->Document->Bullets
5. select the bullet you want to use in your document and press OK
6. File->Export->LaTeX
7. compare the previously exported file to the new one:
diff -u previous.tex newfile.tex

You'll see a couple of lines like:
diff -u previous.tex newfile.tex
--- previous.tex Thu Sep 20 13:12:15 2001
+++ newfile.tex   Thu Sep 20 13:12:30 2001
@@ -4,6 +4,7 @@
 \usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
 \usepackage[latin1]{inputenc}
 \usepackage{babel}
+\usepackage{latexsym}

 \makeatletter

@@ -11,6 +12,10 @@
 \providecommand{\LyX}{L\kern-.1667em\lower.25em\hbox{Y}\kern-.125emX\@}

 \makeatother
+\AtBeginDocument{
+  \renewcommand{\labelitemi}{\(\Box\)}
+}
+
 \begin{document}

 \end{document}

The ones we're interested in are the ones with the "+" signs.

In this case, "\(\Box\)".

You then place the LaTeX command into an Insert->TeX in your document.

Or just get hold of "The LaTeX Companion" or some other LaTeX book that
has character tables in it.

I suppose you forgot an parenthesis in the preamble.
send it to the list, if you doesn't find the error.

Or use lyxport (http://www-hep.colorado.edu/~fperez/lyxport) which does all
3: lyx->(ps,pdf,html). If you only need tex->pdf, you can try tex2pdf (I
don't recall the url), it's more sophisticated than lyxport. The two
programs will be soon merged into one.
