I would add what I really like regarding PSTricks: it is its ability
to draw figures with high precision, since one can easily control
numerically the figures and the plots.

  Thanks, Paul.
  I now know the power of pstricks, but what I have yet to discover is
whether the effort of coding everything is worthwhile for many
illustrations. This comment is not meant to ignite a flame war or cast
aspersions on pstricks but to express my lack of familiarity with the tool.
There are a number of vector drawing programs for linux (xfig is
probably the best known and tgif is my favorite) that can do many static
figures more quickly. There are also gnuplot and gri for data plotting;
these, too, are hand coded and not drawn interactively so this may be less
of an issue with data plots.
  Where I see the value of pstricks is plotting data output from model runs.
The axes can be set as a template and the data plotted as it's generated.
Since the textual output of model run progress will be applied to a LaTeX
template the addition of pstricks will produce output that can't be beat for
visual appeal.

Paul,
It turns out that the problem is not simply between clicking and opening.
The recent files list, which appears when one clicks on _F_ile, has some
entries in the Unix style (C:/LyX/etc) and some in the Windows style
(C:\LyX\etc). If I use the former then I can export, the Windows style
fails.

Incorporating PSTricks Figures in a Document

2005-02-14 Thread Rich Shepard
  I've gone through the PSTricks tutorial as well as Herbert's fine document
on the package. Now I understand that I can specify the location of the
image within a document, but that does not allow it to float. The latter is
desireable when the figures are part of a large document such as a long
report or a book.
  Would I open a figure float, center the paragraph, then open the ERT box
to write the pstricks code? Or is there a different, preferred way to do
this. For example, generating figures and plots separate from the text
document then importing them as .eps files.
Thanks,
Rich

Sure. The only reason I added the script to the wiki page in the first
place was because Ruurd's Windows port used a Bourne shell script solution
that I wrote. Unfortunately, the Bourne shell utilities used by most
Windows users proved to be too buggy to be used, so I rewrote the script
in python. Thereafter, I put the script on the wiki because I have no
control over when Ruurd releases his port, or indeed what he puts in it.

LyX 1.3.6 and above will run out of the box on Windows, (albeit with more
bugs than on Unix ;-)) and so we'll have less need of such workarounds.

As for version numbers, these things are all in a cvs repository. It's
trivially easy to retrieve each and every change to the file, but all that
is circumvented if we upload to the wiki.

Maybe someone with 5 minutes spare will remove the uploaded file from the
wiki and add a link to the viewcvs page above?

The word Fontsize doesn't appear in the log file.

Thanks, Herbert. I have two questions:

(1) can we have a tag for the above, so that we can see within LyX
that it is a proof?

(2) does this solution conflict with other classes when I use LyX to
work with other documents?

You indicated elsewhere you're using MiKTeX on Win XP, correct? In that
case, send the tar file to the bit recycler, then use MiKTeX's package
manager to install the preview package.

Also, did you get rid of the python executable that came with LyX and
install the full-blown version?

There are notes for coaxing preview to work on the Wiki:

Given your other message, you're probably not going to like the answer
here :-), but I usually track down this sort of problem by exporting to
LaTeX and having a look at the raw LaTeX. At least with me, it
frequently boils down to some character or style change having occurred
inside an environment v. outside, or vice versa. If your document
compiled/viewed ok before you added the ToC and not after, I'd check
whether the ToC got inserted inside some environment where it didn't
belong (?).

What platform? There's a bit of an adventure with exporting on Windows,

LyX doesn't need the whole thing. Here I have:

$ ls /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/preview
prauctex.cfgpreview.sty  prshowbox.def prtracingall.def
prauctex.defprfootnotes.def  prshowlabels.def
prcounters.def  prlyx.defprtightpage.def

where /usr/share/texmf/ is the 'base' of my TeX distribution's (teTeX)
support files. I tell TeX about these files by running texhash
from /usr/share/texmf/. If you're using MikTeX, I see a very recent mail

Ok. I've obviously updated the version of lyxpreview2ppm.py. Grab the most
recent version from

That's because you don't have preview.sty installed and usable by LaTeX.

Strange. If you look at the code around line 222 in lyxpreview2ppm.py,
you'll see that fontsize is initialised to a non-zero value. Does your
logfile contain any lines that start "Preview: Fontsize" and are any of

Angus,
Thanks for the pointer to preview.sty. I have obtained the

Regarding lyxpreview2ppm.py, the relevant code, from lines 191 to 196
would appear to be:

   found_fontsize = 0
   found_magnification = 0
   # Default values
   magnification = 1000.0
   fontsize = 0.0
The word Fontsize doesn't appear in the log file.

You should try doing a Tools->Reconfigure so that lyx knows that noweb

Do not be afraid to look at the source of any Wiki page by clicking on
"Edit this page".

View/edit the source and use the [Preview] button to see what your
changes will look like.

No harm is done as long as you do not use the [Save] button.

IMHO, this is a faster way of learning, as you can see example "code"
for the actual page.

to check.
3. Create a command file named lyx2lyx.cmd to run lyx2lyx.py:

4. Now, you should be able to run lyx2lyx; that will actually run

I haven't actually tried this with lyx2lyx, but it works for a simple test

discover it previously. Great job!

Now, I am trying to use it for literate programming (noweb). I did install

does include it's needed weaving functions). Thus, nobeb layouts are
available and I can start writing some pieces of text using scrap environment.

But: I can't export the file as noweb. Using the menu "export...noweb" does
nothing. I only need this version of the file (.nw).
