when running the configuration during installing. When +checking for
/Resources/../src/tex2lyx/tex2lyx..., there are no any reponses. Note

xmgrace and lyx 1.4

2006-04-03 Thread iprmaster
Hello LyXers
I have started to use the new LyX version and I am very impressed about the
new interface. Unfortunately, some old (1.3.5) lyx files does not work
properly. In particular some xmgrace floats (extension .agr.gz) are not
recognized:

...ts_FRC_zeroD_HydrogenAir_base\lyxdot agr}
  \par\end{centering}
The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have
misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct
spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue,
and I'll forget about whatever was undefined.

for the inserted file

Plots/FRC/zeroD/HydrogenAir/base.agr.gz

I have tried to play with the configuration (File Formats and Converters)
but I could not get any working setting. I had no problem with the previous
versions (up to 1.3.6). Any idea?
Thanks
Max

I was unable to find the phrase computer algebra system in the

feature of LyX can be used.

In linux, it was as simple as installing both lyx and a suitable algebra
system, and then use it like this:

ctrl+M (to enter math mode)
1+1 (simple formula)
edit-math-computer algebra-maxima (maxima is what I have)
Formula automatically turns into:
1+1=2

Maxima was also able to do stuff like \int x^4 dx, and turn it into
\int x^4 dx = \frac{x^5}{5},
as well as \int\int x+ydxdy=\frac{xy^2}{2}+\frac{x^2y}{2}
I even got a long exact answer for the sum from 1 to 75 of 1/x^2
I tried the same with octave, and it failed to evaluate the expressions.

Octave managed to turn 1+2+3+4 into 1+2+3+4=10 though.

The use of computer algebra is limited. Expressions are simplified,
integrals are solved, (and you get the sum too if you provide the limits.)
Nice and powerful, but maxima often chokes on parantheses.
Octave handles those better, but chokes on anything with an x in it.
Make sure you don't write the equal sign, let the algebra system do that.

I guess there are some problems with the communication with these
math systems.

Re: Figure drawing GUI?

2006-04-03 Thread Helge Hafting

Stacia Hartleben wrote:

There is a GUI for figures in LyX?? I was thinking more like something
that Word or OO has where you have a little figure drawing toolbar and
you can insert shapes into the document. I don't think LyX has that. I
like that program because you can use a GUI to make things and you
don't have to rely on numbers and code to draw a figure.

Use xfig - it has a GUI - no numbers or code unless you want it.
And it works from within lyx.
Insert-file-external material
or just insert-external depending on your lyx version.

You get a dialog box. Set the type to xfig instead of the
default chessdiagram. Then, enter a suitable filename
and press edit.

Now you get a xfig window - a GUI for figures.

Now,you won't get a toolbar inside lyx this way - xfig really
is an app of its own. But you manage your figures from within
lyx, I hope that is good enough. In the future, we might be
able to stuff the xfig file into something like file.lyx.tar so
it may be transferred as a single file too.

But I don't think you'll ever see a figure editing toolbar inside
lyx, for the developers generally follow the unix philosophy
of do _one_ thing and do it well. Lyx does documents well.
Other apps to figures well, and lyx currently provides a nice
interface to a few of those. Interfaces to other graphichs apps
are easy to add, as long as there is a way to convert the
other app's files into something lyx/latex can understand.

This approach is actually better than an integrated editor:
1. We support the same operations as an integrated editor,
i.e. you see a preview of your figure in lyx at all times, and
you have a gui for changing it too.
2. It is easy to add support for anybody's favourite figure tool, so
we are not in any way limited here.
3. A crash/bug in some graphics editor will _not_ bring lyx down
with it! An important argument for running separate apps in
processes of their own. (Lyx uses this approach in many other
cases as well - a crash in image conversion, preview generation
or output generation will not crash lyx either.)
4. This apporach support more than just graphichs. Anything that
generates output that might be useful in a document works with
this approach. Want to include spreadsheets? Add a template
for your favourite one, assuming it can be made to generate
   postscript without user intervention.

Abdel,

thank you for suggesting to subdivide the manuscript. (It grows longer
and longer ...) I wanted to try myself but was hesitating. The main
disadvantage of the long manuscript is that pdflatex takes a while.
Will this be shortened by subdividing the manuscript?

If you pdflatex from the main document no.

Can I restrict output to just the chapter I am working at?

Yes.

And what about cross references to other chapters. I understand that
this can be done, but will the time pdflatex takes be kept down?

There's no difference AFAIK. You just have to open the main document
first and load the child document from there (clicking on the button
input)

I ask this because you seem to be quite experienced with all this. If
you simply give me a green light I shall try. I simply want to avoid
spending too much time in an attempt that ultimately yields no
benefits for me.

Go ahead :-)

By the way, scrolling with the sidebar is much smoother in 137, as
compared to 141 (without natbib) even if this is no performance test.
I like it better. Why has it been changed?

I think the painting routines had been rewritten so it would take
sometime before it is as optimized as 1.3.7

I would appreciate if you could advise me either go ahead with
dividing the manuscript or keep the manuscript together, given my
objective of working smoothly on the manuscript and compilking it
occasionally with pdflatex. The slight delays that bother you are not
that important in my case. At the moment I use Lyx 137 anyway, until
the navigation issue is solved (which is important for me).

Thanks again for your consideration.

You're welcome,
Abdel.

I was able to discern the error location by carefully reading the message in

It's hard to answer this because you haven't specified what version of LyX

guess I'd suggest that you click on the grey BibTeX Generated Bibliography

If you're creating your own source list (instead of using BiBTeX) then you
should insert \thebibliographystyle{plain} somewhere in the document using ERT.

1. Which installer did you use, Angus's (installs just LyX, points to
other software if needed) or Uwe's (installs anything you don't already
have)? Uwe's runs somewhere between 22 and 56 MB, depending on version
(I think); Angus's is in the single-digit MB range.

2. How long did you wait to see if the freeze thawed? On my machines,
the installer script pauses at one or two points while substantial
background computing is taking place. I don't recall if the tex2lyx
check was one of those places. During the freeze, was your hard drive
light blinking (frantically)?

All else failing, you might try uninstalling (removing all traces of
LyX, including any configuration files) and doing a clean
reinstallation. Of course, it would be a good idea to back up
configuration files in case you need them again.

Incidentally, if you want to install 1.4.1 parallel to 1.3.7, rather
than replacing it (a prudent idea; 1.4.1 has not been officially
released yet, at least for Windows), then you should do the following:

(a) install to a different directory;

(b) do *not* let the installer launch 1.4.1 (but do let it create an
icon on the desktop); and

(c) edit the icon (right click, select Properties, then the Shortcut
tab) and change the Target field to use a different user directory than
what 1.3.7 uses. A typical target field (after editing) might look like

C:\Program Files\LyX 1.4.1 pre1\bin\lyx.bat -userdir C:\Documents and
Settings\your id here\Application Data\lyx 1.4.1

with suitable modifications to the paths. Assuming you have not already
created a 1.4.1 home directory, you'll be prompted whether to create it
(yes) the first time you launch 1.4.1.

I think there have been changes in the preference file between 1.3.7 and
1.4.1. If you try to run them both using the same home directory, 1.4.1
will make changes to the preference file that will give 1.3.7 indigestion.

Use xfig - it has a GUI - no numbers or code unless you want it.

Insert-file-external material
or just insert-external depending on your lyx version.

You get a dialog box. Set the type to xfig instead of the

Now you get a xfig window - a GUI for figures.

Now,you won't get a toolbar inside lyx this way - xfig really

lyx, I hope that is good enough.

You're welcome,
Abdel.

It's hard to answer this because you haven't specified what version of LyX
you're using, whether you're using an external .bib file, etc. Taking a wild
guess I'd suggest that you click on the grey BibTeX Generated Bibliography

(a) install to a different directory;

(b) do *not* let the installer launch 1.4.1 (but do let it create an
icon on the desktop); and

(c) edit the icon (right click, select Properties, then the Shortcut
tab) and change the Target field to use a different user directory than
what 1.3.7 uses. A typical target field (after editing) might look like

C:\Program Files\LyX 1.4.1 pre1\bin\lyx.bat -userdir C:\Documents and
Settings\your id here\Application Data\lyx 1.4.1

with suitable modifications to the paths. Assuming you have not already
created a 1.4.1 home directory, you'll be prompted whether to create it
(yes) the first time you launch 1.4.1.

I think there have been changes in the preference file between 1.3.7 and
1.4.1. If you try to run them both using the same home directory, 1.4.1
will make changes to the preference file that will give 1.3.7 indigestion.

spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue,
and I'll forget about whatever was undefined.

I have tried to play with the configuration ("File Formats" and "Converters")

I was unable to find the phrase "computer algebra system" in the

feature of LyX can be used.

In linux, it was as simple as installing both lyx and a suitable algebra
system, and then use it like this:

ctrl+M (to enter math mode)
1+1 (simple formula)
edit->math->computer algebra->maxima (maxima is what I have)
Formula automatically turns into:
1+1=2

Maxima was also able to do stuff like \int x^4 dx, and turn it into
\int x^4 dx = \frac{x^5}{5},
as well as \int\int x+ydxdy=\frac{xy^2}{2}+\frac{x^2y}{2}

Octave handles those better, but chokes on anything with an "x" in it.
Make sure you don't write the equal sign, let the algebra system do that.

I guess there are some problems with the communication with these
math systems.

It is not possible anymore to put \bind commands in lyxrc file. You
should use a personal bind file to do that, like

--mybindings.bind--
\bind_file cua

\bind "Delete" "delete-backward"

The lyxrc.example file is obsolete, and should probably be removed.

2006-04-03 Thread Ekkehart Schlicht

Abdel,

thank you for suggesting to subdivide the manuscript.

"input")

I ask this because you seem to be quite experienced with all this. If
you simply give me a "green light" I shall try.

I would appreciate if you could advise me either "go ahead with
dividing the manuscript" or "keep the manuscript together", given my
objective of working smoothly on the manuscript and compilking it
occasionally with pdflatex. The slight delays that bother you are not
that important in my case. At the moment I use Lyx 137 anyway, until
the navigation issue is solved (which is important for me).

Thanks again for your consideration.

You're welcome,
Abdel.

proc document class

2006-04-03 Thread Alexandru Cabuz
Hello, list!

Question concerning proc document class:

Why is the proc document class not supported in lyx?

Can I still use lyx to write proc documents, by some workaround?

Thank you.

It may be connected the following bug: the character º is replaced by
z with a strange accent; however, if I export the file to LaTeX, I
can see the character º correctly, but getting z again after compiling
the LaTeX file. Any ideas?

JMarc,

Thank you. In other words it was accidently changed and not noticed. It's
certainly not a fatal flaw; too often the messages in the error boxes were
rather cryptic, anyway.

My message itself was rather cryptic :) The error boxes are gone for
good and replaced by the error list. What is changed is that it should
now point to the right place in the document (due to a bug that seems
at first sight completely unrelated).

JMarc,

OK. That's a good idea. When you write, "it should now point to the right
place," should there be a visual indicator? When I realized what had changed,
I was able to discern the error location by carefully reading the message in
the pop-up box. But, I wasn't sure to which figure float it referred. I did
work that out, but it was my unfamiliarity that delayed my understanding.

Guess I just have to make more errors to become familiar with the new
system.

Thank you,

Rich

Yes. 1.4.1 has many improvements. It should be out in a few weeks, if
not in few days. If you are impatient, and are using a linux system,
you can compile the latest 1.4.xcvs by yourself. (Even going with
1.5.xcvs is not such a bad idea, if you are brave enough to test new

problems after upgrading

2006-04-03 Thread jesse mejia
I just upgraded from 1.3.something to 1.4.0 yesterday. It seemed
fine/better with what I was working on, but today I opened up an older
project and the output cuts off about half of the footnotes at the
bottom of each page! It was set to A4 paper size previously, and I
double checked that that is still the case...although I'm not sure that
would cause this.
Can anyone help? I'm pretty concerned because it's something I'll need
to turn in for binding in about a week! (I guess I shouldn't have
chosen this as a time to upgrade!)

Thanks!

Numbers of section and subsection

2006-04-03 Thread Jordi Espasa Clofent
Hello,

I use latex2html to convert *.tex files into *.html files; I'm content about
it in general. But there is a point of dissatisfaction: the Section and
Subsection format type don't appear with their number. Evidently, I've
checked that the Section and Subsections are numbered in original *.lyx
document.

¿What can I do?

Thanks

Since support for latex2html was discontinued a few years ago
you could try htlatex which is still being actively developed.

It's hard to answer this because you haven't specified what version of LyX
you're using, whether you're using an external .bib file, etc. Taking a wild
guess I'd suggest that you click on the grey "BibTeX Generated Bibliography"
button and choose one of the available styles such as "plain".

If you're creating your own source list (instead of using BiBTeX) then you
should insert \thebibliographystyle{plain} somewhere in the document using ERT.
(But I'd guess you're not doing this).

lyx and noweb

All I know about lyx is what I've learned by going through the

(a) install to a different directory;

"C:\Program Files\LyX 1.4.1 pre1\bin\lyx.bat" -userdir "C:\Documents and
Settings\\Application Data\lyx 1.4.1"

with suitable modifications to the paths.

Probably a silly question, but did you put \usepackage{booktabs} in the
preamble?

I'm attaching a small LyX document that contains the example table from
page 5 of the booktabs manual (in ERT). Does it compile correctly on
your system? If not, what version of LyX are you using, on what
operating system, and what is the first error message you get? Also,
are you using English or a different language?

By the way, I can display this correctly with both LyX 1.3.7 and
1.4.1svn. I built the file on Windows; hopefully the end-of-line
characters won't cause problems if you are using Linux or MacOS.
