LyX 1.5.1 crashes
Hi! It is the fourth or fifth time that LyX (on Windows) crashes when I insert a Note (Alt+i+n+n). Unfortunately the crashes happen randomly, and I cannot reproduce them. Is this a known problem? After the last crash I got this debug message, although I think it is probably not related: NoRepeatedApplyReadOnlyPolicy: No transition for input SMI_OKAY from state INVALID Completed Cheers, Nicolás

be surprisingly complicated. I eventually found a solution, however,
would like to discuss some of the issues.
It took me quite a while to figure out that all these letterpaper or
a4paper options one can pass to a LaTeX class have nothing to do with
the actual printer page size of the output media -- they just influence
the type area calculations. The printer page size is not controlled by
LaTeX, but the backend-driver (dvips, dvipdfm, pdftex, ...). On most
LaTeX installations it defaults to A4 paper. Depending on the
backend-driver, the printer page size can be influenced by either
command line options (not really suitable if using LyX) or by
driver-dependent /special-commands.
As I was using pdflatex, I added
\pdfpagewidth=8.5in
\pdfpageheight=11in
to my preamble and that did it. However, I would prefer an
backend-driver--independent solution.
I found two packages that offer functionality to specify the printer
page size independently from the backend-driver: geometry and typearea.
However, I was not able to figure out how to use one of these packages
to set the printer page size *without* having it to recalculate the type
area according to more or less nifty algorithms at the same time.
(With the ACM classes, the type area is anyway fixed and optimized for

How did \usepackage[letterpaper]{geometry} mess up the layout?
I assume from your location that you usually want to use A4 and just
need letter for certain special situations (such as the one you
described). Attempting to do the reverse of what you want (switch from
letter, my default, to A4), I discovered that if you just change the
paper size in the LyX document settings, it supplies the new size as an
option to the document class, and pdflatex seems to ignore that. If you
also switch from default margins to custom margins, though, LyX loads
geometry and supplies the paper size (along with the margins) as options
to geometry, and for me that seems to work. I'm using a different
class, though, so perhaps ACM is susceptible to format problems where
AMS is not.

I'd like to change the abstractname from german Zusammenfassung to
Kurzfassung. With
\renewcommand\abstractname{Kurzfassung}
in Document-Settings-Latex header it does not to work. Before the command
there are the following lines, which work fine:
\usepackage[ngerman]{babel}
\addto\captionsngerman{
\renewcommand{\figurename}{Abb.}%
\renewcommand{\tablename}{Tab.}%
}
The used document class is report (koma-script).
Any ideas?

i.e.

about layout
Please, Has a LyX layout file anything to do with the final of the compiled document (PDF, DVI or PS? I am facing some weird results while importing a TeX file. It seems to work fine, but there is a block that is misinterpreted by the process. As far as this doesn't happen when compiling the document with any other TeX front-end, I am guessing I am doing something wrong with LyX. Why not take a leaf out of how the Scribus list [1] handles languages other than english? Even though English is the official list language there are postings in other languages. And there is always someone who will translate it so that others are able to give an answer. And they handle this on a very polite way, IMO a very positive example wich is quite unique for mailing lists. For this it might be a good idea to explain which language is prefered (english) and which additional languages are spoken by list members who are willing to translate a posting. Is it possible to write a document in LyX (1.5.1) that mixes two (or more) scripts? If so, how? I have been able to install and use an alternative keyboard map for a non-latin script, but, even though one can specify two keyboard maps, I have not been able to find anywhere in the documentation how to select the second map. About the 'no color' in math mode
There are some strange behaviors when I want to change the color of
some letters back in math mode.
For example, if you change the color of AAA in math mode from the
original to red by the 'text style' dialog, how can you do in order
to change the color back to the original one?
(except pressing the 'undo' button)
Is the 'no color' in the 'text style' dialog designed to do this?
Unfortunately, it just change it to such kind of source codes:
{\color{red}{\normalcolor AAA}} or {\normalcolor {\color{red}AAA}},
just not our expectation {AAA}.
However, 'no color' works well in text mode.
Could someone give me an explanation of this strange behavior?

Is it possible to write a document in LyX (1.5.1) that mixes two (or more) scripts? If so, how? I have been able to install and use an alternative keyboard map for a non-latin script, but, even though one can specify two keyboard maps, I have not been able to find anywhere in the documentation how to select the second map. About the 'no color' in math mode
There are some strange behaviors when I want to change the color of
some letters back in math mode.
For example, if you change the color of AAA in math mode from the
original to red by the 'text style' dialog, how can you do in order
to change the color back to the original one?
(except pressing the 'undo' button)
Is the 'no color' in the 'text style' dialog designed to do this?
Unfortunately, it just change it to such kind of source codes:
{\color{red}{\normalcolor AAA}} or {\normalcolor {\color{red}AAA}},
just not our expectation {AAA}.
However, 'no color' works well in text mode.
Could someone give me an explanation of this strange behavior?

LyX 1.5.1 crashes
Hi! It is the fourth or fifth time that LyX (on Windows) crashes when I insert a Note (Alt+i+n+n). Unfortunately the crashes happen randomly, and I cannot reproduce them. Is this a known problem? After the last crash I got this debug message, although I think it is probably not related: NoRepeatedApplyReadOnlyPolicy: No transition for input SMI_OKAY from state INVALID Completed Cheers, Nicolás

How to set the printer page size to letter without altering the layout
Hi,
I have a paper that uses the ACM class "sig-alternate" and needed to
produce a PDF that uses "letterpaper" as page size. This turned out to
be surprisingly complicated. I eventually found a solution, however,
would like to discuss some of the issues.
It took me quite a while to figure out that all these "letterpaper" or
"a4paper" options one can pass to a LaTeX class have nothing to do with
the actual printer page size of the output media -- they just influence
the type area calculations. The printer page size is not controlled by
LaTeX, but the backend-driver (dvips, dvipdfm, pdftex, ...). On most
LaTeX installations it defaults to A4 paper. Depending on the
backend-driver, the printer page size can be influenced by either
command line options (not really suitable if using LyX) or by
driver-dependent /special-commands.
As I was using pdflatex, I added
\pdfpagewidth=8.5in
\pdfpageheight=11in
to my preamble and that did it. However, I would prefer an
backend-driver--independent solution.
I found two packages that offer functionality to specify the printer
page size independently from the backend-driver: geometry and typearea.
However, I was not able to figure out how to use one of these packages
to set the printer page size *without* having it to recalculate the type
area according to more or less nifty algorithms at the same time.
(With the ACM classes, the type area is anyway fixed and optimized for
letter format.)
More precisely:
\usepackage[letterpaper]{geometry}
messed up the layout completely, whereas
\usepackage[letterpaper]{typearea}
resulted in a error message that "current" has not been defined.
Any ideas?

How did \usepackage[letterpaper]{geometry} mess up the layout?
I assume from your location that you usually want to use A4 and just
need letter for certain special situations (such as the one you
described). Attempting to do the reverse of what you want (switch from
letter, my default, to A4), I discovered that if you just change the
paper size in the LyX document settings, it supplies the new size as an
option to the document class, and pdflatex seems to ignore that. If you
also switch from default margins to custom margins, though, LyX loads
geometry and supplies the paper size (along with the margins) as options
to geometry, and for me that seems to work. I'm using a different
class, though, so perhaps ACM is susceptible to format problems where
AMS is not.

changing \abstractname
Hi,
I'd like to change the abstractname from german "Zusammenfassung" to
"Kurzfassung". With
\renewcommand\abstractname{Kurzfassung}
in Document->Settings->Latex header it does not to work. Before the command
there are the following lines, which work fine:
\usepackage[ngerman]{babel}
\addto\captionsngerman{
\renewcommand{\figurename}{Abb.}%
\renewcommand{\tablename}{Tab.}%
}
The used document class is report (koma-script).
Any ideas?

Did you include the redefinition in the \addto\captionsngerman statement,
i.e.

Why the list is "English only" (Was: DVI sem imagens [displaying images in DVI])

At the latest LyX developers meeting I think there was one Finn/(Dutch?), one Norwegian, one Swede, one German, one French and two Portugese/(Italian?). AFAIK, none of them has English as a native tongue:-) As for a user that is uncomfortable or unable to express himself in English, he could for instance start by asking for help in translating the question. As long as the question and answer are understandable in English, it really doesn't matter how the question is originally posed. Again, this is so that most of us will be able to benefit. If this is not desireable or inconvenient for a group of people, then they can and have started separate forums. about layout
Please, Has a LyX layout file anything to do with the final of the compiled document (PDF, DVI or PS? I am facing some weird results while importing a TeX file. It seems to work fine, but there is a block that is misinterpreted by the process. As far as this doesn't happen when compiling the document with any other TeX front-end, I am guessing I am doing something wrong with LyX. Why not take a leaf out of how the Scribus list [1] handles languages other than english? Even though English is the official list language there are postings in other languages. And there is always someone who will translate it so that others are able to give an answer. And they handle this on a very polite way, IMO a very positive example wich is quite unique for mailing lists. For this it might be a good idea to explain which language is prefered (english) and which additional languages are spoken by list members who are willing to translate a posting.
