Block Selection of Text

2007-10-13 Thread Level 1
Hi, I started using lyx today and i like the idea (at least in principle) but
I have difficulty using the actual program. The reason why I'm writing is
this is not to complain or insult you, but in hopes that there is something
wrong with my version and that my concerns can be fixed. I'm using the ubuntu
gutsy version, which is 1.5.1.

Overall, It seems slow, and all of the examples and tutorials refuse to covert
to dvi, pdf or ps, with various error messages. It also crashed; I don't
remember why, but it didn't have an autorecovery feature which upset me. But
the biggest problem I have is that I can't select blocks of text. I can
click and drag to select and the text is highlighted in light blue, but about
500 ms after I let up the mouse it magically unselects. This makes it
impossible to do things like block select.

Is lyx supposed to work like this or is my version defective?

Thank you for your time.

changed language from Spanish to American in Document

I can see that roman problem was solved but now I

Then I return to Spanish language but American
remains. Now I have all text underlined, and I can't

Re: Block Selection of Text

It says, Font TS1/cmr/m/n/10=tcrm1000 at 10.0pt not loadable: Metric (TFM)
file not fo for every (r) sign, that is an r with a circle around it, and
every bulleted list (Itemize?). I tried to import a text file, and it
suggested I covert it to unicode, but I could find how to convert it to

As for the block selection problem, now I can't seem to reproduce it, but I'll

Using \fbox as an environment?

2007-10-13 Thread Steve Litt
Hi all,

The documented way to use \fbox is like this:

\fbox{this is my text}

I'd like to do something like this:

\begin{fbox}this is my text\end{fbox}

However, doing that draws a tiny box around the first character. Anyone know a
way to turn \fbox into an environment, or an environment equivalent for
\fbox, or a way to put a border around a minipage?

Thanks

Dear users,

I am on Ubuntu 7 and I have installed LyX 1.5.2. When I tried to view

In particular it says that it does not understand \thethm for changing

Then I installed back LyX 1.5.1 and everything was compiled correctly.

I just wanted to remark this strange behaviour.

Yes, you can change the way the alignment appears on

/usr/share/lyx/layouts/. Copy these to your local

Drop-down menu problem in double-monitor linux setup

2007-10-13 Thread Stefano Franchi
I recently switched from a Mac installation to a Linux box, and, at the same
time, from LyX 1.4.x to 1.5.x.
I am experiencing the following problem:

the drop down menus always open on the same monitor, regardless of where the
LyX window is. In my typical setup, that means the menus drop down on the
wrong monitor.
I had a similar setup on MacOs, and never saw this problem. But as I said, I
was on LyX 1.4.x there.

Is this a known problem?

Cheers,

Can I ask another question? Is there a select and carry function? In many
word processors, you can select a sentance, and then click somewhere in the
middle of the sentence and drag it to somewhere else in the paper. The
better ones will correct spacing and capitalization for you, but it doesn't
seem like this works in LyX.

LyX 1.5.2.'s fuzzy screen in Mac + wrong path to Aspell

2007-10-13 Thread Margarida Truninger
Dear all,

I would like your help on two problems:

1. I've read all your feedback about LyX 1.5.2. displaying a fuzzy screen in
Macs:

This is the result of a bug fix: LyX now uses the Mac standard
interface language for its menus and dialogs. I don't know if there's
a way of using an alternative interface language. (Jean-Marc?)

I guess the way of setting an alternative interface is to change
Environment.plist, like the wiki used to say before 1.5.2.

JMarc

Well, hrrr... could you tell me more about this Environment.plist? where,
what and how to change it? Me too, I get the fuzzy image, on Mac PPC, OS X
10.4.10.
In the meantime, I'm back to 1.5.1. In any case, congratulations for your
work in LyX! (though, I would dismiss that particular bug-fix;)

2. The Spellchecker still prompts this message:
The spellchecker could not be started
Error: The file /usr/local/lib/aspell-0.60/english can not be opened for
reading.

Can you give any clue on how to get rid of this path? Besides in mac, I have
user (me)/library ...no local. And aspell has no file in it called as
simple as english.

Bueno, thank you, in advance!

Best,
Margarida

re: Mac OS X 1.5.2 unable to print

2007-10-13 Thread Dov Kruger
Hello,

I am a relatively unskilled latex user, which is why I fell instantly
in love with lyx. I am impressed with how easy it is to use, and the
WYSI part improves productivity for interactive tasks like formatting
an equation or inserting diagrams.

However, I was unable to get it to fully work. I followed the
instructions on Mac OS X, got the MacTeX-20070829.dmg, installed it.

It appears to have installed itself into /Library/TeX

When I installed Lyx beforehand, it failed on certain things related to
finding TeX, so I re-installed, and everything appeared successful.
However, printing is ghosted out, and when I load the document I
created with lots of equations, it warns:

The layout requested by this document, article.layout is not usable.

This is presumably because lyx doesn't know where the TeX stuff is.
I got it to work in the first place by adding /Library/TeX/Root/bin

to my path. What other environment variables or other configuration
should I do, (and I think this should be added to the instructions for
the Mac).

Just to confirm, I grabbed a tiny latex demo off the net, latex'd it,
xdvi'd it, and it works, so clearly MacTeX is working as it should, in
my path.

thanks!

Using \fbox as an environment?

2007-10-13 Thread Steve Litt
Hi all,

The documented way to use \fbox is like this:

\fbox{this is my text}

I'd like to do something like this:

\begin{fbox}this is my text\end{fbox}

However, doing that draws a tiny box around the first character. Anyone know a
way to turn \fbox into an environment, or an environment equivalent for
\fbox, or a way to put a border around a minipage?

Thanks

Yes, you can change the way the alignment appears on

by editing the layout files, which you'll find in
 (e.g.)
/usr/share/lyx/layouts/. Copy these to your local
 LyX directory (e.g.,

 may want to change
the filename to something else, and change the first
 line of the layout
file, so your changes appear as a new choice in
 DocumentSettings rather
than over-writing an old one. See the Customization
 manual for the details.

Cheers,

The file I was reffering to was the tutorial, it seems like the tutorial

Earlier I was also having trouble with bulleted lists but they seem to be

I got it to work in the first place by adding /Library/TeX/Root/bin

to my path. What other environment variables or other configuration
should I do, (and I think this should be added to the instructions for
the Mac).

Just to confirm, I grabbed a tiny latex demo off the net, latex'd it,
xdvi'd it, and it works, so clearly MacTeX is working as it should, in
my path.

thanks!

Using \fbox as an environment?

2007-10-13 Thread Steve Litt
Hi all,

The documented way to use \fbox is like this:

\fbox{this is my text}

I'd like to do something like this:

\begin{fbox}this is my text\end{fbox}

When I tried to view

following command in the preamble:

\renewcommand{\thethm}{\thechapter.\arabic{thm}}

In particular it says that it does not understand "\thethm" for changing
the theorem numbering.

Then I installed back LyX 1.5.1 and everything was compiled correctly.

I just wanted to remark this strange behaviour.

To have formulas centered, you need to change them to a displayed formula, shortcut

The stuff in the square brackets is the optional argument. Add it to the

Re: problem adding a class/layout

Hello, I am running Lyx 1.4.3 on XP. I need to format a paper (by Monday!)
using the sig-alternate style. I have placed sig-alternate.cls in the Tex

to the main lyx folder (..LyX 1.4.3-5\Resources\layouts). I also ran
reconfigure (which produced an “illegal instruction” but then seemed to run
to completion). However, I still do not see the new document class show up
in Document | Settings.. Can anyone help?

The illegal instruction is probably the culprit. Try posting the
complete output.

Did you do whatever you need to do to update your TeX database?

You might also upgrade to 1.5.2.

Cheers,

Stefano

unicode.

Is the circled r character in your LyX file as a circled r, or are you
using a LaTeX macro for it? If it's a single character, you might try
replacing it with \textregistered (in ERT).

Work! At first no work, because text inside Opt Short
Title was no changed, but when I noticed this problem
I changed one by one.

Little problem, I get desired look in Lyx screen but
now I can't compile without error.
I not noticed this before because another problem,
but now I solved that problem and I found that I have
an end flushleft problem with this layout
 Any idea?

The file I was reffering to was the tutorial, it seems like the tutorial
should use the highest standards, but whatever. Yes, it appears in the LyX
file as a circled r. I deleted the r's and now it comes out correctly.
Earlier I was also having trouble with bulleted lists but they seem to be
magically fixed, I'll keep you posted.

Thanks!
