Re: question about ERT inset in LyX1.6
Adding the attached module produces a classic decoration and disables the buttons on the extras toolbar, but the font is still the default (typewriter appeared in previous versions) and the text is not TeX code. preserving tool bar preferences in LyX 1.6
hello, what file do i need to modify or save so that the displayed tool bars keep their size and location when i open lyx? i only want the standard and extra tool bars to be displayed by default, in small size, and with the extra tool bar displayed vertically along the left side of the screen. i have created this setup, but it doesn't seem to save because everything is lost when i close lyx and open the program again. thanks, -brian

Most likely, you have own customized bind- and/or ui-files from old versions in your user-directory, which are copied over to the new version, but do not properly work there anymore (and the Mac installer also told you that). A radical cure to fix all problems is to delete ALL Lyx-folders (such as LyX, LyX-1.5, LyX-1.6, ...) in /Users/yourusername/Library/ Application Support (or better: move them to some other directory) and run the LyX-Installer from the dmg again. You will have to redo all your prior configurations, but therefore things will work. LyX 1.6 was a major release, so quite some things changed. cmd-return does not break the paragraph (nothing happens and LyX displays unknown function in the lower left) and holding down shift to highlight characters or words does not work. in fact, if i have something highlighted, holding shift and moving the cursor to add or remove a character from the highlight causes the entire highlighted section to become unhighlighted. All works fine here. Above procedure should fix it. one other odd thing is i get a small ">" character on the right side of the cursor. this character appears when i'm moving the cursor with the right or left arrow keys or sometimes when i'm typing. it seems like a graphical glitch and is somewhat annoying. is this expected? Yes, it is a new feature, "Autocompletion". You can turn it off in the Preferences. i'm running LyX on a mac 10.4 intel. previous versions of LyX worked great and didn't have these odd editing problems. the .bind document hasn't changed with the upgrade. And that is exactly the problem. The installer is not able to do migrate the old bind file to the new format. Trash the old one, and define your key-bindings again, this time in the GUI (in Preferences). There are some small limitations currently in the Shortcuts-GUI, if you should run into them, search the LyX archive for solutions. Hope this helps, Konrad

double spacing
i was noticing recently that the double spacing of a lyx-produced document seems a little small. for example, i am able to get 324 words on a page (8.5 x 11) in a double spaced document that is twelve point font with 1.25" margins all around. this is much more than the typical 250 words per page as a rule of thumb and as a comparison, the same number of words take up 1.3 pages in a double-spaced document in word with the equivalent font size and margin spacing. has anyone else seen this behavior and is there a way to set lyx so it will produce more typical double spacing? thanks, -brian

Hi Adrian, You can use the bibfont command if you are using natbib package. Re: How to avoid Macro pop-up?
hi Sebastian, i just figured this one out as well after prematurely posting the same question about a week ago. the solution is to go into math mode and then change the toolbar settings. enter math mode as if your going to start a new formula and then select View -> Toolbars. if the cursor is within the math mode, then you'll see that Math Panels and/ or Math might be set to auto. uncheck this and the math-macros will no longer pop up automatically. cheers, -brian On Nov 2, 2007, at 11:25 AM, sebastian guttenberg wrote: Hi lyx-team (Or others)! Re: table settings and setting border does all or nothing
another option that i've used for adding custom white space is to create a new command in the preamble using \rule. this is an extension of the suggestion by Enrico and you can fine tune the extra space as needed. \newcommand\T{\rule{0pt}{2.6ex}} \newcommand\B{\rule[-1.2ex]{0pt}{0pt}} add these commands to the preamble and then insert ERT into a row that you want extra white space above \T or below \B the letters. note that you'll need to add a space after the \T or \B otherwise latex will think that you have a undefined command. cheers, -brian On Oct 16, 2007, at 7:18 PM, Enrico Forestieri wrote: Jeremy C. (The GUI gives only an approximate representation of what the final document will look like.) If you're talking about the end product, do any of the letters have descenders? What looks like a big gap below might not look so big with a descender taking root in it. In the generated output. Not all the rows have a descender (a "g"). Every row has the characters jammed up to the top. All the rows appear to be the same height. And even the bottom of the "g" doesn't touch the bottom of the row (the border), but the tops of letters like "TTL" and "Fl" touch the top of row (top border). Looks bad. I can provide PDF. LaTeX sizes the height of a row in table based on the height and depth of the font used, irrespectively of the fact that you have letters with ascenders or descenders. So the space above a "T" is the same as the space below a "p" such that in case of "TTL" the space below is indeed larger. However, you can control height and depth through a parameter. Indeed, LaTeX multiplies height and depth of a row in a table by \arraystretch. Now, given that the height is generally bigger than the depth, for a sufficiently high value of \arraystretch you will get a larger space above than below. I think that if you put in the preamble the following line: \renewcommand{\arraystretch}{1.5} you will get what you want. In case you want a finer control, you could try using the following in the preamble: \newbox\mystrutbox \setbox\mystrutbox\hbox{% [EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@} [EMAIL PROTECTED] \fi} Keep in mind that LaTeX uses .7 instead of .85 above, and that if you follow this second path, you will lose the ability to control the height of a table row through the \arraystretch parameter. reverse citation numbering
hello, this is more of a bibtex and natbib question, but i thought that some people on the list may have come across this problem when creating a CV. i'm using the article class to create a CV and i'd like to use bibTeX with the natbib style for my publication list. a typical CV will list publications in chronological order, but the numbering is in reverse so that a reviewer can quickly count how many publications one has. 5. kidd et al., 2007 4. kidd et al., 2006 3. kidd et al., 2005 2. etc the standard citation output, however, appears in the order of a citation sty, which for natbib is the order that they appear in a document. 1. kidd et al., 2007 2. kidd et al., 2006 3. etc is there a simple way to reverse the citation order within the natbib style or bibTeX framework so that it follows a reverse chronological order that is typical for a CV? i still want to take advantage of using citations so that the formating is correct and the insertion of new publications is trivial? thanks, -brian
default font for a table
is there a way to modify the default font for a table? it would be nice to change the font settings in two different ways. (1) a latex command in the preamble so that the font size and style would be consistent for the entire document, regardless of what appears on the screen in lyx (2) a way to change the table font size and style that doesn't require clicking the "apply last" or "Text Style" buttons. in particular, if i create a table (say 5 x 5), then the empty cells have the default document font for standard text. i can highlight all the cells in the table and change the font with options in the Text Style window. however, this only works if a cell already contains text. also, if i delete all the text in a cell, then the custom font that reverts back to the standard. i could wait until i've completed the table before making a final change to the font, but it would be great to be able to set this once, especially since i often add columns or rows to the table and then have to go back to fix the font size and style so it matches the rest of the table. i'm really interested in a solution to number 2. in an attempt to come up with a work around, i've tried creating a custom bind for the "apply last" command, which seems to be font-free- apply. however, i've been unsuccessful in getting this to work. any suggestions for this? thanks, -brian

Re: Math font size
sorry about the previous reply, i misunderstood what you wanted to do. as jens suggested, use the DeclareMathSizes command in the preamble. you'll need four sizes: \DeclareMathSizes{12}{10}{7}{5} This assumes that the non-math text is 12pt. One visually good thing is to use a 10:7:5 ratio for the mf, sf, ssf so scale appropriately. -brian On Apr 12, 2007, at 4:46 PM, Lyx Physicist wrote: On Thu, 2007-04-12 at 15:40 -0700, Jens Noeckel wrote: On Apr 12, 2007, at 2:02 PM, Brian Kidd wrote: one silly thing to do is to increase the zoom size, which will increase the font size for the entire document including math fonts. go to the preferences, screen fonts and then adjust the zoom size. hope that helps. -brian On Apr 12, 2007, at 9:24 AM, Lyx Physicist wrote: Hi, I have inserted a few equations using the math panel and I want to enlarge the font so its easier to read. Thanks, Charles Yes, it wasn't clear what he means, but I'm guessing he wants a larger font in the _output_ file (PDF). How about the following method: http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=mathsize You should modify the \DeclareMathSizes command so that its first argument is the document's text size, and the other arguments give the desired math size. Regards, Jens Hi, sorry to not clarify.. Yes, when I input the text in Lyx it is fine and I can read it. But when I output the PDF, it is much much smaller and its hard to see. I looked at the link provided, but am not clear on what to do. I need to use the \DeclareMathSizes {x} in my preamble? And that will make the output math text size x? This is a rather long document(thesis) so zooming in and changing that would alter figures which are set to a specific size etc so I would rather not go that route if possible... Thanks! Charles
Re: Math font size
one silly thing to do is to increase the zoom size, which will increase the font size for the entire document including math fonts. go to the preferences, screen fonts and then adjust the zoom size. hope that helps. -brian On Apr 12, 2007, at 9:24 AM, Lyx Physicist wrote: Hi, I have inserted a few equations using the math panel and I want to enlarge the font so its easier to read. Re: Bibliography formatting
Charles, This can be changed by adding two lines to your preamble. First, add the "super" option to the natbib package. Make sure to change your citation style to numerical under the Bibliography setting otherwise LyX will spit out the warning about having conflicting natbib definitions. Second, add the renewcommand for biblabel to give the number period format. Note that there are a number of other natbib options (e.g. comma, sort&compress, etc.) and bib commands (e.g. bibfont, bibsep) to play with. I think the natbib manual might have some examples. Otherwise you should be able to search on the web for some examples. \usepackage[super]{natbib} [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Brian On Apr 11, 2007, at 6:04 PM, Lyx Physicist wrote: Hello, I am using Lyx 1.4 for Mac and am using BibDesk as a gui frontend to create a bibtex file for my bibliography(the reason is I just started using lyx/LaTex and know nothing about Bibtex). Is there any way to change the default citation method ex: This is from my book[1] to having the citation in superscript form? I would like the "1" (or whatever number the citation corresponds to) to be a superscript and then have the numbering of entries in the bibliography be similar so in the bib it would look like 1. question about classes in LyX 1.5
I've having difficulty getting custom classes to work on LyX 1.5 beta for mac intel. In particular, a custom class does not show up as an option within the document settings even though it appears in the TeX information. What's bizarre, however, is that when I click on the show path check box, the class does not show up. The custom class is in the ~/Library/Application Support/LyX-1.5/clsFiles.lst file so the situation is a bit puzzling. Any suggestions are appreciated. As an aside, I've had no trouble creating new classes and adding them to previous versions of LyX with texhash and a reconfigure. Thanks, -Brian
question about math commands in LyX1.5
I am trying out the beta version of 1.5 for a Mac Intel machine and it seems that the opt-m g *, where * is a lowercase character, command is disabled. this command previously created the greek letter that corresponds to the lowercase letter and automatically enters the math mode. Is there a reason this command is disabled? Will it be enabled once the full version is released? Thanks, -Brian
