Re: question about ERT inset in LyX1.6

Adding the attached module produces a classic decoration and disables
the buttons on the extras toolbar, but the font is still the default

code. Is this problem specific to mac or am I missing some extra
command in the module to specify using TeX?

preserving tool bar preferences in LyX 1.6

hello,

what file do i need to modify or save so that the displayed tool bars

side of the screen. i have created this setup, but it doesn't seem to
save because everything is lost when i close lyx and open the program

Most likely, you have own customized bind- and/or ui-files from old
versions in your user-directory, which are copied over to the new
version, but do not properly work there anymore (and the Mac
installer also told you that).

A radical cure to fix all problems is to delete ALL Lyx-folders
(such as LyX, LyX-1.5, LyX-1.6, ...) in /Users/yourusername/Library/
Application Support (or better: move them to some other directory)
and run the LyX-Installer from the dmg again.

You will have to redo all your prior configurations, but therefore
things will work. LyX 1.6 was a major release, so quite some things
changed.

cmd-return does not break the paragraph (nothing happens and LyX
displays unknown function in the lower left) and holding down
shift to highlight characters or words does not work. in fact, if
i have something highlighted, holding shift and moving the cursor
to add or remove a character from the highlight causes the entire
highlighted section to become unhighlighted.

All works fine here. Above procedure should fix it.

one other odd thing is i get a small ">" character on the right
side of the cursor. this character appears when i'm moving the
cursor with the right or left arrow keys or sometimes when i'm
typing. it seems like a graphical glitch and is somewhat annoying.
is this expected?

Yes, it is a new feature, "Autocompletion". You can turn it off in
the Preferences.

i'm running LyX on a mac 10.4 intel. previous versions of LyX
worked great and didn't have these odd editing problems. the .bind
document hasn't changed with the upgrade.

And that is exactly the problem. The installer is not able to do
migrate the old bind file to the new format. Trash the old one, and
define your key-bindings again, this time in the GUI (in Preferences).

There are some small limitations currently in the Shortcuts-GUI, if
you should run into them, search the LyX archive for solutions.

Hope this helps,
Konrad

double spacing

2008-02-13 Thread Brian Kidd
i was noticing recently that the double spacing of a lyx-produced
document seems a little small. for example, i am able to get 324
words on a page (8.5 x 11) in a double spaced document that is twelve
point font with 1.25" margins all around. this is much more than the
typical 250 words per page as a rule of thumb and as a comparison,
the same number of words take up 1.3 pages in a double-spaced
document in word with the equivalent font size and margin spacing.
has anyone else seen this behavior and is there a way to set lyx so
it will produce more typical double spacing?

Hi Adrian,

You can use the bibfont command if you are using natbib package. Just
add this ERT command before your bibliography tag.

\newcommand{\bibfont}{\fontsize{9}{12}\selectfont}

The first number is the size and the second is the baseline skip. I'm
assuming you are using 12pt font for the rest of the document. Note
that you can also play with the spacing between citations in your
bibliography section with the bibsep command.

\renewcommand{\bibsep}{0pt}

Yes, we realize it's a problem on Intel as well. (It's a matter of
whether anti-aliasing gets used or not. The issue arose in trying
to use a font cache to speed things up -- something I believe is
needed on PPC Macs -- which had the side effect of disabling anti-
aliasing.)

I'm not sure what current thinking on a solution is. (Abdel? ...

Hopefully matters will improve with 1.5.3. In the meantime, you

Re: table settings and setting border does all or nothing

2007-10-16 Thread Brian Kidd
another option that i've used for adding custom white space is to
create a new command in the preamble using \rule. this is an
extension of the suggestion by Enrico and you can fine tune the extra
space as needed.

\newcommand\T{\rule{0pt}{2.6ex}}
\newcommand\B{\rule[-1.2ex]{0pt}{0pt}}

add these commands to the preamble and then insert ERT into a row
that you want extra white space above \T or below \B the letters.
note that you'll need to add a space after the \T or \B otherwise
latex will think that you have a undefined command.

Is this in the GUI or when you generate a DVI or PDF? (The GUI
gives
only an approximate representation of what the final document
will look
like.) If you're talking about the end product, do any of the
letters
have descenders? What looks like a big gap below might not look
so big

with a descender taking root in it.

In the generated output. Not all the rows have a descender (a
"g"). Every
row has the characters jammed up to the top. All the rows appear
to be the
same height. And even the bottom of the "g" doesn't touch the
bottom of
the row (the border), but the tops of letters like "TTL" and "Fl"
touch

the top of row (top border). Looks bad. I can provide PDF.

LaTeX sizes the height of a row in table based on the height and depth
of the font used, irrespectively of the fact that you have letters
with
ascenders or descenders. So the space above a "T" is the same as
the space
below a "p" such that in case of "TTL" the space below is indeed
larger.

However, you can control height and depth through a parameter. Indeed,
LaTeX multiplies height and depth of a row in a table by
\arraystretch.

Now, given that the height is generally bigger than the depth, for a
sufficiently high value of \arraystretch you will get a larger space
above than below.

I think that if you put in the preamble the following line:

\renewcommand{\arraystretch}{1.5}

you will get what you want. In case you want a finer control, you
could

try using the following in the preamble:

\newbox\mystrutbox
\setbox\mystrutbox\hbox{%
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@}
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
\fi}

Keep in mind that LaTeX uses .7 instead of .85 above, and that if you
follow this second path, you will lose the ability to control the
height

of a table row through the \arraystretch parameter.

reverse citation numbering

2007-09-17 Thread Brian Kidd

hello,

this is more of a bibtex and natbib question, but i thought that some
people on the list may have come across this problem when creating a
CV. i'm using the article class to create a CV and i'd like to use
bibTeX with the natbib style for my publication list. a typical CV
will list publications in chronological order, but the numbering is
in reverse so that a reviewer can quickly count how many publications
one has.

2. etc

the standard citation output, however, appears in the order of a
citation sty, which for natbib is the order that they appear in a
document.

1. kidd et al., 2007
2. kidd et al., 2006
3. etc

is there a simple way to reverse the citation order within the natbib
style or bibTeX framework so that it follows a reverse chronological
order that is typical for a CV? i still want to take advantage of
using citations so that the formating is correct and the insertion of
new publications is trivial?

default font for a table

2007-04-27 Thread Brian Kidd
is there a way to modify the default font for a table? it would be
nice to change the font settings in two different ways.

(1) a latex command in the preamble so that the font size and style
would be consistent for the entire document, regardless of what
appears on the screen in lyx

(2) a way to change the table font size and style that doesn't
require clicking the "apply last" or "Text Style" buttons. in
particular, if i create a table (say 5 x 5), then the empty cells
have the default document font for standard text. i can highlight all
the cells in the table and change the font with options in the Text
Style window. however, this only works if a cell already contains
text. also, if i delete all the text in a cell, then the custom font
that reverts back to the standard. i could wait until i've completed
the table before making a final change to the font, but it would be
great to be able to set this once, especially since i often add
columns or rows to the table and then have to go back to fix the font
size and style so it matches the rest of the table.

i'm really interested in a solution to number 2.

in an attempt to come up with a work around, i've tried creating a
custom bind for the "apply last" command, which seems to be font-free-
apply. however, i've been unsuccessful in getting this to work. any
suggestions for this?

Reverse searching works through lyxpipe. When you start LyX.app, it
checks to see if two files -- .lyxpipe.in and .lyxpipe.out --
exist; if they do, then LyX cannot interface with them properly. If
they don't then LyX creates them and can use them to make reverse
searching work. I suspect that you probably have these files
remaining from running LyX at some point in the past (as when it
crashes and so is unable to delete these files). If that's so, you
need to delete them manually. Their location can be found in LyX >
Preferences > Paths. (And since they are files whose names begin
with ".", they are invisible in the Finder; you'll need to use the
Terminal, something like this:

rm /path/to/.lyxpipe.in
rm /path/to/.lyxpipe.out

(substituting the appropriate path name for "/path/to").

Bennett

Thanks for the tips about pipes. It wasn't the exact issue you were
referring to, but I was able to modify the lyxpipe path so it points
to the correct location. Note that I am using JabRef so I had to fix
the path to the lyxpipe before. Everything seems to be working now.

MM Notes: The package preview is needed by LyX to preview LaTeX
constructs; especially for math formulas when you use the option

i'm not sure what you mean by whether my preferences are set
correctly? i have instant preview on and this setting is saved so
that every time i open up a new document, i can go into LyX >
Preferences... > Look and Feel > Graphics and see Instant Preview:
On. still, there is no change in the math font when i enter a
formula so instant preview isn't working.

oddly, however, nothing related to instant preview appears in the
~/Library/Application Support/LyX-1.4/preferences file. but i'm
not sure this matters.

any other suggestions?

Try looking at the output in Console.app just after you create a
new equation (and move the cursor out of it so that LyX tries to
generate the preview). Does that tell you anything?

Bennett

The Console.app information was helpful.

dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/local/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib
  Referenced from: /sw/bin/dvipng
Reason: Incompatible library version: dvipng requires version
10.0.0 or later, but libfreetype.6.dylib provides version 6.3.0

dvipng failed to generate images from 0lyxpreview.dvi

My current version of FreeType is 2.2.1. I installed version 2.3.4,
which is the latest stable release. Now the error message in the
console has gone away when I use instant preview and instant preview
tries to render the math fonts. However, the rendering for some
characters is wrong. For example, if I type, x = 1, then instant
preview displays x / 1. If I type, a + b, then instant preview
displays a -/ b. The console shows:

dvipng warning: at (0,-1) ignored header \special{!/[EMAIL PROTECTED]
(11.81)def}.
dvipng warning: at (0,-1) ignored header \special{!userdict begin/

eop-hook{/preview-bop-level dup load dup 0 gt{1 sub}if store}bind def
end}.

but I'm not sure how to interpret these warnings. Any other suggestions?

reverse searching xdvi to lyx1.4.4 on mac

2007-04-15 Thread Brian Kidd
i just set up the interface with X11 to view dvi files with xdvi. the
viewer is great because it's much quicker than preview and is easy to
update.

the reverse search sounds interesting, but i'm not sure how it's
supposed to work in lyx? i edited my latex -> converter so it
includes the source-specials tag (latex --src-special $$i), but when
i ctrl-click from within xdvik, nothing happens. i thought that
reverse searching meant i could click on the dvi file and the cursor
within lyx would go to the clicked location. am i misunderstanding
something? i got the impression from the wiki that i can do reverse
searching between lyx and xdvi. is this possible and what is the
exact syntax to configure? finally, if it's possible to do reverse
searching, can one do forward searching with lyx too?

i'm running lyx 1.4.4 on mac.

thanks,

Are you sure preview.sty is in your LaTeX path? (Does it show up in
Help > LaTeX Configuration?)

When you test math preview, are you sure your preferences are set
correctly?

Do you open the file to be tested *after* setting the preferences
correctly?

Re: Math font size

2007-04-12 Thread Brian Kidd

sorry about the previous reply, i misunderstood what you wanted to do.

as jens suggested, use the DeclareMathSizes command in the preamble.
you'll need four sizes:

\DeclareMathSizes{12}{10}{7}{5}

This assumes that the non-math text is 12pt.
You'll get 10pt for the math-font, 7pt for script fonts and 5pt for
script script font sizes.

One visually good thing is to use a 10:7:5 ratio for the mf, sf, ssf
so scale appropriately.

Yes, it wasn't clear what he means, but I'm guessing he wants a
larger font in the _output_ file (PDF). How about the following
method:

http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=mathsize

You should modify the \DeclareMathSizes command so that its first
argument is the document's text size, and the other arguments give
the desired math size.

Jens

Hi, sorry to not clarify.. Yes, when I input the text in Lyx it is
fine

and I can read it. But when I output the PDF, it is much much smaller
and its hard to see. I looked at the link provided, but am not
clear on

what to do. I need to use the \DeclareMathSizes {x}
in my preamble? And that will make the output math text size x?
This is

a rather long document(thesis) so zooming in and changing that would
alter figures which are set to a specific size etc so I would
rather not

go that route if possible...
Thanks!
Charles

Re: Bibliography formatting

2007-04-11 Thread Brian Kidd

Charles,

This can be changed by adding two lines to your preamble. First, add
the "super" option to the natbib package. Make sure to change your
citation style to numerical under the Bibliography setting otherwise
LyX will spit out the warning about having conflicting natbib
definitions. Second, add the renewcommand for biblabel to give the
number period format. Note that there are a number of other natbib
options (e.g. comma, sort&compress, etc.) and bib commands (e.g.
bibfont, bibsep) to play with. I think the natbib manual might have
some examples. Otherwise you should be able to search on the web for
some examples.

\usepackage[super]{natbib}

change the default citation method
ex: This is from my book[1]

to having the citation in superscript form? I would like the "1" (or
whatever number the citation corresponds to) to be a superscript and
then have the numbering of entries in the bibliography be similar
so in the bib it would look like
1. Me, Book from library, 1999
2. Blah, Blah

[1] Me, Book from Library

question about classes in LyX 1.5

2007-04-04 Thread Brian Kidd
I've having difficulty getting custom classes to work on LyX 1.5 beta
for mac intel. In particular, a custom class does not show up as an
option within the document settings even though it appears in the TeX
information. What's bizarre, however, is that when I click on the
show path check box, the class does not show up. The custom class is
in the ~/Library/Application Support/LyX-1.5/clsFiles.lst file so the
situation is a bit puzzling. Any suggestions are appreciated.

As an aside, I've had no trouble creating new classes and adding them
to previous versions of LyX with texhash and a reconfigure.

Thanks, -Brian

question about math commands in LyX1.5

2007-03-29 Thread Brian Kidd
I am trying out the beta version of 1.5 for a Mac Intel machine and
it seems that the opt-m g *, where * is a lowercase character,
command is disabled. this command previously created the greek letter
that corresponds to the lowercase letter and automatically enters the
math mode. Is there a reason this command is disabled? Will it be
enabled once the full version is released?

Thanks,
-Brian
