Under Language Settings-Language there is now a default length unit. What is this used for? It is used in all length combos as the default, if the object in question (inset etc.) does by itself not define a different default. See for instance Graphics, Tabular. It is also the default length if you change for instance a hspace via context menu to custom, etc. And this is something that we should eventually remove, by relying on the language file to provide this kind of information. There are 2 issues with this feature: - when I install LyX 2.1RC1 (fresh installation without any previous preferences) I see in the preferences that the unit is CM. But when I insert e.g. a horizontal space and set a custom length the default unit is BP. The it CM is first used if I change it in the preferences, save and revert the modification back to CM. I filed a bug about this: http://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/9053 - one can only choose CM or IN as default unit. Why not e.g. MM or PT? regards Uwe

Re: 2 questions about new preference features
I don't know what 1 is used for. I also don't know what 2 was originally meant for, but one use case in which I can see it being useful is when working on a document with children. Currently (version 2.0.6) when you close a parent document all of it's children are automatically closed as well, although it may be more convenient to work on some of the child documents without changing anything in the parent document (thus you wouldn't want it to waste tab space). This is different (I hope) from opening the child on it's own, because when the parent is open you can see all references macros etc. defined in the parent or in it's other children. I have recently been working on a project in which there was a parent document which only contained the framework of a book and included a macros file and the other content as children, and most of the time I only worked on one or more of it's children. Having it open but not showing could have been useful in that case. LyX does this automatically (should, at least) if you do not override this choice with a custom setting. My questions are: 1. Looking at the lyx source I found that the documentclass is set to \documentclass[english,magyar]. Just after \begin{text} \selectlanguage{english} is set: \begin{document} \selectlanguage{english} And only at the end of my text Hungarian is set: \selectlanguage{magyar} \end{document} I don't understand this. Several reasons: besides a bug, it may also be that you did copy text from an English document and LyX kept the language... Can it be the cause of wrong hyphenation? Yes. 2. As I said, the font is set to non-tex fonts. Still lyx puts these lines in the preamble: %% LyX specific LaTeX commands. \DeclareRobustCommand{\greektext}{% \fontencoding{LGR}\selectfont\def\encodingdefault{LGR}} \DeclareRobustCommand{\textgreek}[1]{\leavevmode{\greektext #1}} \DeclareFontEncoding{LGR}{}{} \DeclareTextSymbol{\~}{LGR}{126} But I can't see a anywhere that the commands are used in the text. Why are they in the preamble then? Because the code that inserts these lines is not taking into account that no Unicode - 8-bit LaTeX is required. You can ignore this in this case. However this bug has more severe consequences in other cases, where packages (textcomp, tipa, marvosym, pmboxdraw, ifsym, bbding, pifont ...) are loaded that * slow down the processing * may interfere with (Lua/Xe)-tex * give spurious errors when the package is missing but not required with Unicode-aware TeX engines. Just after \begin{text} \selectlanguage{english} is set: Please take a look at http://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/7681 Seems that you have to click inside the document after you change the language of a new document, so that the cursor can update itself. 2 questions regarding float placement
Hi LyX-users, I have 2 questions regarding the placement of floats and the numbers assigned to them in cross-references. The first is whether it is possible to have to order in which floats are referred to in the text determine the order in which they appear in the final document. For example, suppose I have 2 tables, A and B, but I don't know ex-ante which will logically appear first in my final document. I would like for this to be automatically determined by the one that is first referred to in the text. Is this possible? Second, I would like to know how best to maintain consistency in table and figure numbering between a paper and a corresponding Beamer presentation. That is, suppose I have a paper with three tables but in a brief presentation only want to use the first and third of these. For example, the second is just a variant on the first that is worth including in a paper but not needed for a time-limited presentation. It would be useful for the numbering in the presentation to match the numbering in the paper, so as not to confuse people in the audience who have a copy of the paper. Thanks.

Where are you trying to put them? rh I am trying to put them in the title, I need some spaces in between the title words, the setup i need to use is pretty funny: headers and title in the middle a picture then on the left my name, and on the right the teachers names.. then a line and the year... I think is best i make it as standard text! Thanks
[new user] hello everyone, and 2 questions..
Hi everyone i am a new user, i am writing my degree thesis in lyx since i don't want to use Word (the results with lyx are far better) However i incurred in 3 problem that i need to solve if i want to make EVERYthing in lyx: 1. I should use a particular position for the inscription of the first page, the title should be in the middle, and the authors should be on the left and right...Title works fine, but authors wants to put in the middle as well...I tried to use standard, but then they switch to the next page..this is unacceptable. So i need to know how can i force them to be all in the same page, or how to relax the restrictions on the position of text for the Author field. 2. I don't want the date to be added automatically at the end of every chapter i make, how can i remove it? 3. seems to me that defskip, smallskip, bigskip don't work usually unless i protect them...is this fine? Thanks everyone!

I had a swell time using Lyx to work on this document in RedHat linux with Lyx 1.1.6fix4: http://lark.cc.ukans.edu/~pauljohn/ResearchPapers/activists.pdf 2 problems came up I was not able to solve. Hello all LyXers, I've just installed LyX-1.1.6fix4 and as before I really like very much (special thanks to the developers and Matej, who gracefully compiled the sources for RH7.0 and provided the appropriate xforms version!!!) First I made a curious oberservation: When pushing the menue button of save the button stays pushed after the acutal saving process has ceased! (I am not quite sure if this is really a bug, but hasn't oberserved before in fix3) Secondly: I wish to nest a items in a description enviroment which is splendidly explained in the docs (!) It should look like this: 1. description # itemize #item #item 2. description and so on Unfortunately whenever I start to use the descritption enviroment, counting starts with 1. again. I would prefer a continious counter like description 1., 2., 3. and so on...! In case of staying unclear I have added an examplefile! Does anybody know how to make this thing go? I already had a look at Herberts Website and inserted \renewcommand\labelenumi{\Alph{enumi}} \renewcommand\labelenumii{\Alph{enumi}-\Alph{enumii}} in latex preamble to change enumerationsstyle, without reaching successful ends.although this is what I wanted on base of numbers Greets Thomas #LyX 1.1 created this file. 2 Questions
Hello all LyXers, I've just installed LyX-1.1.6fix4 and as before I really like very much (special thanks to the developers and Matej, who gracefully compiled the sources for RH7.0 and provided the appropriate xforms version!!!) First I made a curious oberservation: When pushing the menue button of "save" the button stays pushed after the acutal saving process has ceased! (I am not quite sure if this is really a bug, but hasn't oberserved before in fix3) Secondly: I wish to nest a items in a description enviroment which is splendidly explained in the docs (!) It should look like this: 1. description # itemize #item #item 2. description and so on Unfortunately whenever I start to use the descritption enviroment, counting starts with "1." again. 2 questions about CV document class
Hi, I just upgraded to lyx 1.1.6fix3. However, the rpm from ftp://ftp.sylvan.com/pub/lyx/lyx-1.1.6fix3-1.i386.rpm did not include the CV class. I then installed the cv class seperately according to: http://www.educat.hu-berlin.de/~voss/lyx/templates.html#cv This works fine, but only installs version 1.4. I read in the Mailing list archives that the cv version supposed to be included in lyx1.1.6fix3 is version 1.5. Where can I get version 1.5? What is wrong with the above rpm? --- How do you change the cv topic margin. I have now: ... Some Section 1999-2000 Some employment More text about this employment. ... But I want: ... Some Section 1999-2000 Some employment More text about this employment. ... Now my 2 questions: How can you make the margin wider? And how can you change the font of 1999-2000 to s.th. smaller (throughout the document)? I know that I can change the margin with Layout - Absatzformat (section format?) - Titelbreite (title width) from M to MMM. But this only changes the presentation inside of LyX. I does not affect the postscript output. Any help is greatly appreciated! Chris

Hi all, I have three questions concerning LyX : 1. Has anybody an example of the cover page of a thesis? 2. Is there a way ("renewcommand"?) to customize what's on the top of each page? I mean : (left) "CHAPTER 1. BlaBla..." and (right) "1.2 Patati et patata...". And I would like to cut this text when it's too long. 3. Is it possible to have all the float tables and figures closed by default? I thank you very much in advance for your answer, Nicolas.
