All,

I have nothing to contribute to the discussion of licensing (I am not a
lawyer).

But isn't it significant that a major university (which has been ranked
#1 in Australia and #31 worldwide) is interested in making LyX
available in all its computer labs?

It would probably be a very easy fix to make the dialog non-modal.

FYI, the reason we have this at all is to make it possible for people to
stop processes that are going on too long. As Scott sort of said, once
we have the ability to cancel this kind of thing, the timeout may no
longer be necessary. But that is still a bit buggy.

Note that by LyX 2.4.0 we will have a feature where you can cancel the
process inside LyX by going to Document > Cancel Background Process. I

Just Do It! — Long Export Process Halted to Query Continuation

2018-02-16 Thread Daniel Kian Mc Kiernan
Is there a way of telling LyX to continue an export process without
pausing to query me as to whether I wish it to continue?

Occasionally, I want to convert a paper to OpenDocument format. The
process takes rather a long time. I'd like to go away from it, so
that I can be productive in some other way. But LyX repeatedly posts
a dialog that cries ‘The command / mk4ht oolatex ".tex" /
has not yet completed. / / Do you want to stop it?’ So that I'm forced
to babysit it.

On the one hand, I quite understand why a query is made. On the other
hand, I don't understand why a “Just Do It!” option or a user-set
timer doesn't seem available, as there are various ways within most or
all OSs to terminate processes.

(Obviously, if all else fails then I can punt to the command line to
run oolatex.)

Hi Frederick,
First of all: why do you want to use ERT for creating a table of contents?
In the Lyx document you can break any title at any point using Strg+Enter.

I'm not sure that is a good idea. It will mess up the relations to all
the other sizes,
which is probably part of why your footnote size is too small. It also
fails to

adjust lots of other parameters. Here, for example, is what the \normalsize
command looks like in bk11.clo:

\renewcommand\normalsize{%
   \@setfontsize\normalsize\@xipt{13.6}%
   \abovedisplayskip 11\p@ \@plus3\p@ \@minus6\p@
   \abovedisplayshortskip \z@ \@plus3\p@
   \belowdisplayshortskip 6.5\p@ \@plus3.5\p@ \@minus3\p@
   \belowdisplayskip \abovedisplayskip
   \let\@listi\@listI}

You've effectively deleted most of that. So if you are going to try to
do something
like this, you should probably create your own package by modifying
bk11.clo,
and then loading that. (a bk*.clo files gets loaded automatically by
book.cls, depending

upon what font size you have chosen.)

The latest versions of Qt have a bug that destroys some shortcuts on Windows. For example "alt+m ("

Unfortunately the latest Windows LyX installer from came with the buggy Qt

So if shortcuts like "alt+m (" in math do not work for you on Windows _AND_ if you installed LyX

Case I:
Bookmark shortcuts do not work
Windows 7
LyX 2.1.0dev
Keyboard Layout: "US (International)"

In this case, Ctrl+Alt+5 gives Euro sign (according to the print on the
keyboard).

Case II:
Bookmark shortcuts do work
Windows 7
LyX 2.1.0dev
Keyboard Layout: "US"

Case III:
Bookmark shortcuts do not work
Windows 7
LyX 2.1.0dev
Keyboard Layout: "Dutch"
In this case, Ctrl+Alt+5 gives 1/2 character (this is not the correct
keyboard layout)

Apologies if I'm answering a question you are not asking; I jumped into this
thread a bit late.

You can point MiKTeX's package manager at any "repository", which can be one
downloaded to a local or networked drive. The repository is not a server (in
the sense that no software daemon runs); it's just a directory (and 10^100
subdirectories). If you have multiple users, this might be useful. For a
single user, I don't see how it is any better than having a complete MiKTeX user
installation (complete = contains all possible packages).

FWIW, I have MiKTeX set to "ask first" when it encounters new software packages.
When I install a new LyX version, it looks for a variety of packages, many of
which I will not use in this lifetime (nor the next). I don't plan to draw
chess diagrams, write music, or explore the wonders of Chinese/Japanese/Korean
languages any time soon. So when the LyX installer goes looking for those
classes or styles, MiKTeX asks me for permission to download them and I say no.
For things I think I might need, I say yes. The installation process is then
relatively painless. The "no" decisions can always be revisited (use the
package manager to install a missing package, then reconfigure LyX).

The behaviour would be like with TeXLive: only installed document classes

You have to put in the LaTeX preamble \usepackage{color}

and then use the colorbox and textcolor macro like that in ERT :

\colorbox{black}{\textcolor{white}{\makebox[\textwidth][l]{White on Black}}}

The makebox macro creates a box the size of \textwidth and align the text on
the left [l].

Frederick Noronha [फ़रेदरिक नोरोनया] wrote:

Anything is possible. The easy way out is to use the 'article' class. It
doesn't have chapters, instead "section" is the highest level in the
numbering hierarchy.

So you can start each of your chapters as a new "section", and they will
start immediately. You may have two such "chapters" on the same page, if
they are short enough. Or one chapter ending high on a page, and the
next one starting a bit further down.

I have a book with a series of short essays. While these need chapter
numbers, and listing in the index, it is not necessary for the essays
to begin on a new page. Would be grateful for any help. Thanks, FN

Article sections are numbered, and they are listed in the table of
contents too. You may list them in the index too, of course.

You can't use this scheme if you also need section and subsection
numbers in your book. But if you don't, just use "sections" as
"chapters" and get what you want without a lot of TeX-code.

Hmm, I am trying to solve the same problem---chapters starting on the same
page as the last one, just like sections---but the proposed fix does not
help. The Koma-Script docs say it will always start a chapter on a new page,
and open=any is used if either right- or left-facing pages are acceptable.

Does anyone know how to avoid both starting anew page and inserting a huge
amount of white space before the chapter title?

I found the following code in the Latex user group to solve the blank space
problem, but no solution (or no solution I could understand) to the new page

I have a book which is printed similarly. Each chapter is a separate essay
with the author's photo, about 3*2 cm. The overall effect is very like
KOMA-script, except for that.

What extra information does an image with a "screen" have? Is it
half-toning information or something specific to the printer?
Will a higher resolution image or pdf with less compression help?

Derek

P.S. I don't see any visible differences in the images in pdfs

I now understand :-) But it seems they use very archaic methods of
preparing for print. Normally rasterization process in separation or
b&w printing is currently done automatically these days when film or
plate is prepared to photoset (I don't know proper term in English for
"naświetlarka").

Such process you describe I remember from ages of old Ventura under
Windows 3.1, when every picture has to have LPI and raster angles
defined separately.

Can you (or he) be more precise what you mean with "a screen" (at least
I have never heard of it, and a quick Goolge search did not bring
anything up). Is it some printers' jargon, or a bad translation?

Anyhow, you could also try to give him a postscript file (created via
latex+dvips), or create the pdf from postscript with Acrobat's Distiller
(with the Prepress Profile), or with Ghostscript (also there you have
Zillions of options, for example to not compress the images).

Or, if you have only a few figures, do not include the figures in the
PDF (just leave white space), and let the printer set in the pictures in
his application.

Hi all:

I'm a Lyx user in Goa, and hope you won't mind me intruding.

Every time I go in for a book, to be printed via offset, my printer
has a problem. He takes the PDF file and attempts to do crazy things
like importing it into Windows/Corel Draw, etc.

He says the photos won't print because they don't have a screen.

Query:

* Is he right?

* Is there some way of putting a screen on the photos? LyX takes TeX
commands, so maybe if there's one I could use it.

Earlier, he was struggling to find how to print the file laterally
inverted (mirror image), and we found the command after some search.

Best, FN

I've outputted the work as PDF.

He says that he needs to import it into Corel Draw. PDF files would

You can use the caption package to configure the captions any way you
like. For instance,

\usepackage{caption}
\captionsetup{labelformat=empty,labelsep= none}

in the preamble will eliminate the word "Figure", the figure number and

Do I "clip to bounding box"?

Do your image files contain white space you would like to remove?
Clipping allows you to specify a rectangle within the image and remove
anything outside that rectangle. You could use this to eliminate parts
of the image (useful if you want to crop out your ex-spouse, say), but I
use it exclusively to trim away white space from the image file.

How do I reduce the "gutter" between the
image and the text?

Do you mean the space between the float and the surrounding text, or the
space between the image and the caption within the float?

If I want to place a caption to the picture, it
seems to be coming a bit awkwardly and clashing with the pic. Is there
some way of controlling its positioning?

The caption package gives you some control over that.

Could anyone kindly help me by:

1. Pointing to a useful online tutorial for getting graphics into Lyx
(for a book).
2. Tell me how I knock off the 'figure number' below graphics inserted?

Currently, I am using Lyx 1.4.3 (a relative newbie), trying to build a
book (monocolour, with black-and-white line illustrations). To get the
images in, I'm using

Insert > Float > Text Wrap Float

My settings are Width: 80 Units: line% Placement: Default (outer)

Do I "clip to bounding box"? How do I reduce the "gutter" between the
image and the text? If I want to place a caption to the picture, it
seems to be coming a bit awkwardly and clashing with the pic. Is there
some way of controlling its positioning? Many thanks! FN

Summary for the query on use avant font in equations

2004-10-08 Thread Pep Roca
The original question was how to use avant font in the equations.

The problem is solved:

I a Linux Debian Sarge I do:

1) Download "sansmath.sty" from:

http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/misc/

2) With then command "kpsepath tex" you get the paths, where TeX search for
files. I get:

/home/totxo/texmf/tex/generic/
/usr/local/share/texmf/tex/generic/
/usr/local/lib/texmf/tex/generic/
/var/lib/texmf/tex/generic/

/usr/local/share/texmf/tex/
/usr/local/lib/texmf/tex/
/var/lib/texmf/tex/
/usr/share/texmf/tex/

3) As root, make the directory -p /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex

# mkdir -p /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex

4) As root, copy "sansmath.sty" to /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex/:

# cp sansmath.sty /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex/

3) Submit the command: # texhash

4) Start lyx

8) Put in the preamble (Format -> Document -> Preamble):

\usepackage{sansmath} \sansmath

and add commands like: \mathversion{sans} and \mathversion{normal} where
necessary in your document.

Well, it would be nice if just editing the daughter document to still
be able to add/see citations. To do this I think we would need to
extend the bibtex inset so that it respects a
bool do_not_export_if_daughter_doc;
flag or some such.

My problem, as always, is in defining the User Interface. Is a check
button in the dialog:

o Generate references if daughter document

understandable? How could we do better?

Hi All,

Just a bib query. I know there has been a lot of discussion about the problem of
adding bibliographies to the end of multi-part documents. There is also a tip in
Herbet's pages to help. Well, I tried the tip it failed. So I then simply commented
out the bibliography entry in the subordinate documents and I ended up with what I
wanted ... no bibliographies in chapters, and a big bibliography at the end. I am
using LyX 1.3.2 (with the Gnome front end on this machine)

Am I right in concluding that there is no need now for the tips on the multi-part
documents for this version of LyX?
If I am right then ... maybe the tips should be updated?

I can't recall anyone saying anything about this nice new feature in the recent past.

Page numbering query

2002-11-18 Thread jamesb3
Hi,
I'm just learing to use LyX, so I'm sorry if this is a bit of a
gumby-type question. I'm writing a large-ish report, and including
individual chapters as files in a 'master' file.
When I generate tables of contents, figures and lists, page numbers begin
from the beginning of the page of contents. I would like page numbering
to start at the beginning of my first chapter, and my title page,
abstract, and tables of contents, figures and tables to be numbered
consecutively with lower case roman numerals.
I have tried the LayTeX command
\pagenumbering
to restart page numbers at the beginning of my first chapter, but this
didn't seem to work.
I then tried the command
\pagenumbering{roman}
to try and convert numbering in selected sections to roman numerals, and
when this didn't work, I tried
renewcommand\thepage{roman}
(as per advice on the website), bt this didn't work either. Not sure If
I've got the wrong commands, or am putting them in the wrong place, or if
my approach is totally wrong. I have no prior knowledge of LayTeX, so I'm
not sure how to go about it.
Any tips?

Query: Style Files + W2K +

2001-05-24 Thread Goffredo

Hi All,

Well, I have managed to get LyX installed more or less onto W2K, with some
help from Claus. It is working, it is not crashing when I hit a key, and
so on.
But ... there is still one glitch ... I have files that I created on LyX
on Linux,
and tried to edit them on W2K ... but it didn't work out. I was told
that the
document class didn't exist ... and when I tried to alter line-spacing I
ended up
being told that some style file (linespace.sty (or something like that))
did not
exist. OK. I installed all MikTeX levels up to level 4, and I tried to
reconfigure
LyX, using the batch file for this puporse. But still no joy! How do I
get LyX
on W2K to recognise new style files, and document classes? It there some
instruction somewhere? Some advice?

Thanks
Regards
Freddo

PS I will write a little summary of my experiences and post them in the next
day or two, so others will be spared my trouble. (I do think though that the
horrible problems that occur because of W2K accepting spaces in file and
directory names ... I mean because MikTeX in the English version installs
into 'Program Files' by default for example ... this should be mentioned in
the documentation.)

Assuming its a standard layout and not some weird package thingy, you should
be able to make it work just by copying it to $/.lyx/layouts - AFAIK there is
no difference between LyX layouts and normal LaTeX layouts. Then open LyX,
Edit -> Reconfigure, close and open again - your new layout should appear
under Layout -> Document -> Class.

You first option is to put the caption in latex mode: change the paragraph to
Standard, press ctrl+l, and then type \caption[...]{...} (if you want, you
can disable late mode for the text inside the braces).

A nicer solution is to modify the layout file you use for your document,
adding to it the following lines:
---begin-
Style ShortCaption
  CopyStyle Caption
  LatexName setshortcaption
  LabelString "Short Caption:"
  LabelType Static
  Preamble
\let\oldcaption=\caption
\renewcommand{\caption}[1]{
\ifx \shortcaption \undefined
   \oldcaption{#1}
\else
   \oldcaption[\shortcaption]{#1}
\fi
}
\newcommand{\setshortcaption}[1]{
\newcommand{\shortcaption}{#1}
}
  EndPreamble
End
-end-
Then you can put a short caption paragraph before your caption paragraph.

Now, I know this question comes up a lot (at least, it has recently :)
but I have a different question related to it, and a design suggestion related
to the related question. :)

Q: Is there a way to pass arguments, when printing through LyX, to get
those "frontmatter" pages to print? From the dvips docs, you can do stuff like
-pp =2-5 to get pages *absolute* 2 (in other words, if you start with page "i",
that would be page "ii") through page 5 (relative to the page *numbered* 1 in
the book)... however, when I try putting such things in the "pages" field of
LyX' print dialog I get error messages.

Suggestion: Make a way, via a fancier dialog or a way to pass args to
dvips (or whatever the user is using) so that we could print just the
frontmatter pages or do other weird stuff. :)

(I noted yesterday that if I have some \frontmatter pages and I request
to print page 1, I get *both* the absolute first page of the document, *and* the
page numbered "1". To get the real second page, I found that I had to do
"Update DVI" and use a shell window to print it via dvips; LyX would not print
it.)

So, there is my stuff... do with it what you will. :)

Bye,
