I don't remember seeing that particular post. But it seems to me that
this might be a solution to a problem I have had from time to time with
PDF files produced from LyX which have non-embedded fonts when I have
done everything obvious to embed the fonts. The problem has turned out
to be PDF figures in the LyX document, figures generated by some other
program which has not embedded the fonts. Or perhaps pdflatex does not
embed fonts embedded in included PDF files?

Using pdftops to convert the figure to EPS, then using psfrag, might be
a better solution to this problem than the solution I have used in the
past: convert the PDF figure to a raster image.

PDFLatex and psfrag

2010-08-12 Thread Pascal Francq
Hi,
I am using the psfrag package to modify the text included in graphics. When I
use pdflatex from Lyx (2.0 beta 5), the psfrag modifications are not take into
account, while when I use postscript there are no problem.
When I use ps2pdf, I have another problem because Lyx (in fact latex) says
that it cannot determine the size of the graphic.
Any idea ?
Thanks.

The psfrag package does not support pdflatex (or, pdflatex does not

You say when I use postscript there are no problem. So can you not
export your document to a .ps file and run ps2pdf from the command line?
The error message there might be more useful.

psfrag does nothing when generating a pdf-file

2009-02-14 Thread Thomas Engels

Hi all,

I want to replace strings in *.eps files with LaTeX code, so I finally
found psfrag, downloaded it and its working fine - but only when I
generate a DVI file. (inserted ERT in the figure and \usepackage{psfrag}
to the preamble)

I need a pdf, but when I run pdflatex, there is no error or warning, but
no result. It just happens nothing, text strings in eps stay the way
they were. dvipdfm and ps2pdf buttons produce LaTeX formula at the side
of the graphic, but still strings are not replaced.

I've been searching the maillist archive, but did not find a solution
for my special problem.

Can anyone help me?

I use latest LyX and MiKTex versions on windows XP.

Greeting from Berlin,
Thomas Engels

Get it to work first outside LyX with plain latex, then try to do the

Hard to say, as I do not see any problematic character in the ERT.

Some ideas for finding the problem:

* Mark the psfrag ERT inset and choose InsertNoteNote to make a

Alternatively, copy and paste the graphic to a new document and test this.

* Export to LaTeX and run latex on it from the shell - the error output

* Have a look at the encodings declaration under DocumentSettingsLanguage

OK. I'll try to do it today or tomorrow.

No need to look further. psfrags does not work with pdflatex, only with
latex, so you need to use dvi2ps or dvipdfm to produce your pdf. This is
 documented.

Yes, I found out about that. However, even converting PS to PDF gives
slightly worse onscreen graphics. Not much, but enough to be annoying.

Why not add your information to the wiki (especially the bit about the

Good idea. I've never edited a wiki, but this looks like a good reason

LyX, SVG and PSFrag: case report

2007-03-05 Thread Urtzi Jauregi
Hi everybody!

I want to report the results of my experiments in combining SVG figures
and
the PSFrag package in LyX, hoping that they will be useful to somebody.

The point was to draw a SVG figure in, say, Inkscape and insert it
directly
into LyX without converting it to EPS first, to skip a step in producing a
document while having an instant preview within LyX. I also wanted to be able
to select View - PostScript and have LyX automatically produce the EPS file
from the SVG and include any LaTeX code I wanted via PSFrag.

I followed the advice in these two pages:

[1] http://wiki.lyx.org/Tips/UseInkscapeSVGImages
[2]
http://www.ma.utexas.edu/users/stirling/computergeek/latexgraphics.html

Result: It works. Kind of.

I managed to get LyX to accept SVG figures and SVG to EPS conversion
without
any problem by following the info in [1]. Everything works as advertised
(although the PDF conversion gives ugly figures sometimes). The problem is
when I want to use PSFrag. I found three problems:

1. The info in [1] is wrong; to convert SVG to EPS, you have to disable
the convert text to path function in Inkscape or your text will be exported
as a picture. Do *not* use the--export-text-to-path switch with Inkscape.

2. Automatic inclusion of LaTeX code via PSFrag fails, and I don't know
why.
Inkscape converts SVG to EPS correctly; if you insert manually these EPS
files in your LyX document, PSFrag works perfectly. The problem is when you
insert the original SVG in LyX and expect it to handle the conversion by
itself (which is the whole point of doing all this!); in this case, the final
document shows the text anchors instead of the LaTeX code whatever I do. I am
still looking into this.

3. A minor but annoying issue is that, while the PS documentis OK, when
using
Veiw-PDF, the figures look very degraded (and no PSFrag, of course). I am
still looking into this.

Hope all this is useful to somebody. Has anybody tried to do this? Did
it
work? I am specially annoyed at problem (2), because I have the feeling that
it'd work with just a little tweak somewhere. Am I missing something, or is
there a problem with the interaction between LyX, PSFrag and Inkscape?

No. psfrag enables you to put formulas in your figure, and it makes it
possible to use the same font in the figure as in the main text.
If the font in the figure in the final pdf is different than in inkscape,
and you did not use psfrags, then it is a bug in inkscape.

Strange. I've tried that in the past without success. Now it's working
perfectly. Thank you, Georg!

I also wanted to be able
to select View -> PostScript and have LyX automatically produce the EPS file
from the SVG and include any LaTeX code I wanted via PSFrag.

I followed the advice in these two pages:

[1] http://wiki.lyx.org/Tips/UseInkscapeSVGImages
[2]
http://www.ma.utexas.edu/users/stirling/computergeek/latexgraphics.html

Result: It works. Kind of.

I managed to get LyX to accept SVG figures and SVG to EPS conversion
without
any problem by following the info in [1]. Everything works as advertised
(although the PDF conversion gives ugly figures sometimes). The problem is
when I want to use PSFrag. I found three problems:

1. The info in [1] is wrong; to convert SVG to EPS, you have to disable
the "convert text to path" function in Inkscape or your text will be exported
as a picture.

3. A minor but annoying issue is that, while the PS documentis OK, when
using
Veiw->PDF, the figures look very degraded (and no PSFrag, of course). I am
still looking into this.

Yours,

- Urtzi -

LyX, SVG and PSFrag: case report [UPDATED]

2007-03-05 Thread Urtzi Jauregi
Hi everybody!

[I sent this message about an hour ago, but it looks like it got lost.
In the
meantime, I solved one of the problems I had, so I send an updated version of
my original message hoping that it will be useful to somebody else].

I want to report the results of my experiments in combining SVG figures

[2]

Result: It works. Kind of.
[UPDATE: It works perfectly, with just a minor issue. See below]

I managed to get LyX to accept SVG figures and SVG to EPS conversion
without
any problem by following the info in [1]. Everything works as advertised
(although the PDF conversion gives ugly figures sometimes). The problem is
when I want to use PSFrag. I found three problems:

[UPDATE: I solved it! The trick is to declare the packages "graphicx"
and "color" in your preamble, *even if you don't use any color at all*. Just
declare them and wham! SVG previews + autoEPS + PSFrag. Took me a while to
solve this one!]

3. A minor but annoying issue is that, while the PS documentis OK, when
using
Veiw->PDF, the figures look very degraded (and no PSFrag, of course). I am
still looking into this.
[UPDATE: Still doesn't work. The only PDF export that works roughly OK is
ps2pdf, and the images still look worse on screen than on the PS. I haven't
tried to print them though, so maybe the printed version will look better]

Hope all this is useful to somebody. Has anybody tried to do this? Did
it
work?

I had noticed that the fonts in an included .svg are slightly different in the
finished PDF and the .svg in Inkscape but I haven't tried to solve the
problem yet. I take it that this is what PSFrag is for?

I didn't bother with the instructions in the wiki as found that I was able to
get it working without the script. I am able to create images in Inkscape and
include them directly in LyX. The image in the PDF is a vector image as it
should be.

These are my converter strings:
SVG>EPS:
inkscape -z --file=$$i --export-eps=$$o

SVG>PNG
inkscape -z --file=$$i --export-png=$$o

SVG>postscript
inkscape -z --file=$$i --export-ep=$$o

No. psfrag enables you to put formulas in your figure, and it makes it
possible to use the same font in the figure as in the main text.
If the font in the figure in the final pdf is different than in inkscape,
and you did not use psfrags, then it is a bug in inkscape.

I don't know why this instruction is in the wiki.

This looks like a bug in LyX. You should not need to load any package in the
preamble manually. Can you please file this at http://bugzilla.lyx.org,
together with a minimal example .lyx file (with .svg file), and a
screenshot of the correct and incorrect preview?

No need to look further. psfrags does not work with pdflatex, only with
latex, so you need to use dvi2ps or dvipdfm to produce your pdf. This is
documented.

Why not add your information to the wiki (especially the bit about the
text-to-path switch)?

Thanks. I googled but it's one of those subjects where google isn't very
forthcoming.

How to use PSfrag within LyX?

2007-03-02 Thread Urtzi Jauregi
HI everybody,

I routinely use PSfrag to embed complex mathematical expressions in EPS
figures. I'd like to use it under LyX too, but I can't find a place in the
figure float dialogs to enter the tag-to-formula definitions PSfrag needs. So
I usually have to export my documento to LaTeX and work with the code by
hand. Not that I mind terribly, but I'd very much like to be able to produce
the whole document with a single program. Can I do this under LyX?

ERT insets would be OK, but I wonder if one can do it the LyX way, just with
the GUI options.

Cheers,

Hi Vasek,

Thanks for the message. I tried to run monoprint with the following
code,

x=0:0.1:1
plot(x,sin(x))
monoprint(1,'test4',2)

But the system hung...

Did I use it incorrectly?
I have a2ping installed in my system.

Strange. Works fine on my setup. (Linux, tetex)
BTW, I would not use 2 as the third argument. The picture would be bigger than
the page of article class. You would need to add a3paper to its options.

 But the system hung...

Well, this happens when there is malformed latex code in the figure and latex
runs in interactive mode.

Do you have all the packages? graphicp, psfrag, geometry
Actually, you do not need graphicp, change it to graphicx, it should also
work.

What happens if you go to /tmp and run:
latex pcttmp.tex

Hi Vasek,

Thanks for the message. I tried to run monoprint with the following
code,

x=0:0.1:1
plot(x,sin(x))
monoprint(1,'test4',2)

But the system hung...

Did I use it incorrectly?
I have a2ping installed in my system.

Hi,
I do, indirectly.

I have a matlab .m file that runs latex on background and produce a
.pdf file.

Attached.
It is also using a2ping script, which is too big for mailinglist,
google for

it, or I can send it in private e-mail.

Strange. Works fine on my setup. (Linux, tetex)
BTW, I would not use 2 as the third argument. The picture would be bigger than
the page of article class. You would need to add a3paper to its options.

Well, this happens when there is malformed latex code in the figure and latex
runs in interactive mode.

Do you have all the packages? graphicp, psfrag, geometry
Actually, you do not need graphicp, change it to graphicx, it should also
work.

What happens if you go to /tmp and run:
latex pcttmp.tex
manually?

Re: laprint & psfrag

that's exact what I did. I changed graphicp to graphicx, It runs well
in the beginning, but the system could not find the file mono-pre.tex.
There should be a way to fix it..

Oh, sorry, I did not noticed that.
It is a file with my personal newcommands. :-).
Remove it or replace with your own...

Best,

Re: laprint & psfrag

I see, I removed it. Now the line 36, ~/a2ping.pl part has problem,
matlab shows:

/Users/richardwang/a2ping.pl command does not exist.

Then I replace ~/a2ping.pl by a2ping, but it shows:

Compiling: LaTeX -> dvips -> pdf ...
Died at /usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current/a2ping line
1618, line 1.

cd /tmp; a2ping laprint_out.ps: Signal 127
cp: /tmp/laprint_out.pdf: No such file or directory

Any suggestions?

Richard

In case that someone knows a2ping, the line 1681 is:

 o_force_papersize:
die if is_page1_stop();
 # vvv ($llx,$lly,$urx,$ury)=(0,0,$papersize_x,$papersize_y);

Thanks.

 greek symbols using psfrag?

You can only replace the whole string, e.g. you should use

\psfrag{10 G1m}{$10\mu m$}

BTW, if you want to see the replacement in lyx you can do

\psfrag{10 G1m}{

in ERT, then write the replacement in normal text or math, and then

}

in ERT again. Since this looks like 10 micrometer you could also have a
look at the siunits package.
