Re: using image created with inkscape

2006-06-23 Thread Martin A. Hansen

sodiprodi is now inkscape

inkspace makes very nice SVG graphics and can export very nice PNG images.
however, inkscape has strong limitations exporting EPS - especially if
clip-path, scaling and the like is used (resulting EPS is broken - inkscape
developers are aware of this). simple SVG-EPS with inscape does work, and
is readily insertable as graphics in lyx (i have no problems).

alternatively, Xfig is a nice vector drawing tool to create EPS files (but
once you have tried inkscape you with to stay with inkscape! if only they
got proper SVG-PS support soon!)

Maybe a bit far-fetched, but 'skencil' loads SVG images, and can save in
PS/EPS format. I suspect Sodipodi (a native SVG editor) can load them and
print them to PS too.

A new version of Inkscape has just been released, and the reported
problem may already be overcome. Notwithstanding, there is a
workaround that has been successful in my case:

* export your picture as PS
* use ps2epsi
* rename the extension of the resulting file to eps

and that is it.

using image created with inkscape

2006-06-22 Thread Jeremy C. Reed
I created a 4-inch wide image in inkscape (using public domain clipart
from openclipart.org).

I have copies of it here in inkscape SVG format, Tex format using pstricks
(as saved by inkscape) and PNG (es exported by inkscape):

http://pilchuck.reedmedia.net/jeremy/tmp-x47856vukwakbjejhr/

1) First I tried to use the tex version in lyx, but lyx said:

[1] Segmentation fault (core dumped) convert -depth 8...
/usr/pkg/share/lyx/scripts/convertDefault.sh ERROR
Execution of convert failed.

And I have a core dump from convert. It is from ImageMagick-6.2.5.0.
gdb says Signal 11 and
#0 0x in ?? ()
#1 0x48843b9a in _init () from /usr/pkg/lib/libXau.so.6
#2 0x488438c5 in _init () from /usr/pkg/lib/libXau.so.6
#3 0x4804c706 in _rtld_call_init_functions () from /usr/libexec/ld.elf_so

(Problem probably not related to ImageMagick nor the image itself.)

2) Next I tried the png image. It is blurry and seemed to scale somewhat
too big.

Any suggestions or pointers on creating good graphics to be used by LyX
that will print well for a book?

 Jeremy C. Reed

Jeremy,

I'm far from a graphics expert, but I know that .eps files easily integrate
into a .lyx document and look great in a professionally printed book -- or a
locally printed one using the laser printer. I've also integrated .pdf files
and they work very well, too.

I did not like the results when I tried a .png image.

Since SVG is vector format, and so is .eps, it may be possible to get
Inkscape to produce the latter directly. Otherwise, 'convert' will do its
magic on the image.

Rich

Re: using image created with inkscape

2006-06-22 Thread Jeremy C. Reed
I exported my graphic with inkscape to both EPS and Postscript. They both
look good when viewed with gv.

But they won't load with LyX's Insert-Graphics.

They both cause a convert failed. I see that the convertDefault.sh says:

# The default converter if no other has been defined by the user from the
# Conversion-Converter tab of the Preferences dialog.

I don't have any Conversion choice. But I do have Converters.

I am not sure what the target it is converting to. So I modified the
script to output. It said:

convert -depth 8 eps:/home/reed/book/pf-book/images/example-diagram.eps \
 ppm:/tmp/lyx_tmpdir2682126821a/example-diagram2682126821e.ppm

So it wants to convert the postscript or EPS to bitmap PPM. So that is not
for the LyX export, but for displaying in LyX interface itself. So I
unchecked the Show in LyX checkbox.

And the image actually displayed well in my exported PDF (pdf2latex was
used).

The EPS was sideways but looked good. So I chose Rotation Angle of 90 in
the LyX: Graphics gui and this seems fine.

Thank you, Rich, for reminding me try Postscript.

I also tried to use the tex version (generated by inkscape) but LyX
complained that now converter was setup for it.
