General tips for Discord (and Slack and others)

*@name* sends a message to a specific user
example: @arcadeshopper This is a great server! Thanks for inviting us!
This will directly notify Greg and make his computer beep. It will also put
a counter on the server icon, so he can see there's a message waiting.

*@here* sends a message to everyone that is *on line* and connected to a
server.

*@everyone* sends a message to everyone on the server - online or not. *Use
this sparingly. *This should only be used for community announcements and
important messages.

You can also right-click on someone's name to send a DM (direct message).
Your DM conversation shows up in the server list on the left side, and it
will also be available in the Home button in the upper left corner:

To set your preferences globally, click the gear icon at the bottom, next
to your name:

And if you hook up a microphone, you can voice chat in the voice channels.
You can also video chat if you have a webcam. That's super fun. =)

Yeah - while Slack, Teams, and Discord are great for staying in touch,
they're super annoying at work. At work, I prefer to not be notified of DMs
immediately, but not receive a notification for channel messages. I can go
check them on my own time. (I'm not sure that's configurable in Discord...
I'll go look.)

Yes, there it is... right click on the server (on the left side of your
screen) and select Notifications:

It's like a fancier modern IRC with history/persistence. Browser based.

Chat room via browser basically.

People tend to have it running in a side window or background, where
you're "in" the room all day, but you don't sit there paying full
attention to it. You keep an eye on it and read when you want, and if
someone says something to you directly or mentions you it alerts you so
you can respond.

In a work context, I think it's horrible. It's a pure source of
interruptions and keeping your train of thought broken and keeping you
from ever getting deep into the puzzle-solving zone where you can
actually get anything but low hanging fruit done.

Outside of work... I drop in to a couple rooms on specific topics or
projects for a bit once in a while, mostly just to ask about something
and get my answer.

It's like a hang-out space. It can possibly be nice with people you want
to hang out with and who want to talk about the same things. The
immediacy and short back & forth cycle has it's place.

I'd like that, too. Something like, "Model-T Tuesdays at Two"!

Also, can the chats be logged like on IRC? There have been many times when
I've googled for obscure computer related information and only found the
answer because someone a decade ago asked the same question on IRC.

I've never used Discord, either, but I don't think it's like Jitsi, Mumble,
or Mastodon — or IRC, even — where you can just run the software on your
own private server. Discord's blog brags of how many white supremacist
servers they shut down, which implies the company has full control. (It
also implies they let the problem fester for a long time, so I'm not sure
they should be boasting.)

Chat run by a single company is not a deal-breaker for me, but I do prefer
open source whenever possible.

John, one advantage of Discord over IRC is this situation: the text chat is
buffered server side and your client is caught up on all of it when it
connects. This means that you aren't banking on someone being online at the
same time to be able to respond, and you don't have to "idle" in the channel on
the off chance someone calls out.

I am extremely familiar with Discord as both my family and game group use it
extensively for text chat, voice, video, and screen sharing. I'm happy to
answer any questions folks might have about the service or making use of it.

It has been a valuable resource for my family in these difficult times.

White supremacists? In chat rooms? I nazi that coming.

Well this will be my chance to see what Discord is. One of my kids uses it
to chat with friends particularly while playing video games.

Chat is one area where we don't have anything going on for our community.

Greg maybe you could suggest a once a week fixed time range for a club
meeting?

Just a suggestion. I've used IRC before and that was one downfall. You go
in but no one or hardly anyone happens to be there.

Or is the idea that you're just setting up the server and everyone should
just do ad hoc meetings?

And when you say you set up a server does that mean you run the server or
you created a channel and discord company runs the server.

I don't know the terminology used by discord users.

FYI: for those who have been avoiding Discord because they heard it was
popular with white supremacists, the company has since stated that
"inaction is complicity" and they will be actively anti-racist
.

Facebook and the mailing list are not ideal for multi-person text,
voice, or video chat.  Discord (and Slack and Teams and BlueJeans and I
am sure others) fill that space.
