Garage band Automation troubles continue

2011-09-24 Thread Sarah Alawami
Well after a lot of googling I found this might not be accessible with voice
over. I want to be able to do this to make it easier. I don't' want to create a
2 measure project as that would suck big time and not be practical ad I'd have
to paste it in after exporting the track. does not make much sense. Here is an
article on how I found to do it. If someone can please tell me how I can do
this with the keyboard I'd be grateful.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/169218/fine_control_over_garagebands_master_tempo.html

thanks.

Re: VM fusion 4.1 final

2011-09-24 Thread John Gunn
Hello Mike:

If I'm in Windows, and if I command-tab, VoiceOver talks on the Mac side.

So you don't have to turn off VoiceOver.

Ther's a shgortcut. it's cmd g to go to the vm and cmd and control hit together
to go back to the mac. You need to turn off vo if yo want the best experience.
I've found that out anyway.

work. I have another mini that has 4 gb of memory, for that one, windows has 2

Mike:

You can adjust the ram.

Make sure the Machine is stopped. Next if you hit command-E this will bring up
settings.

Or another way, hit command-shift-l which will bring the Library. VO right,
interact and when the Machine is highlighted, do VO-Shift-M and arrow down to
settings.

Interact with the toolbar, show all and you'll see the area where you can
adjust RAM.

Take care,

John

Paul,

Can you clarify for me, are you running Fusion 4.1 with Jaws? If so
Can you let me know the steps you took to set up your virtual machine? did you
create a new one or did you successfully update a old one? I'm very interested
as I'm having trouble getting this done on my end.

mac help please?

2011-09-24 Thread James AUSTIN
Hi Sean,

There are a number of ways to do this.

1. From the Dock.

If you've not changed anything since getting your Mac, all of the most common
apps on the mac will be in the Doc, which is a area of the screen populated by
icon that represent applications. It's analogous to the Start Menu/Task
Bar/System Tray. You can get to it in two ways; either by pressing VO keys
*Control and Option held down) with D or by pressing Control + F3. The latter
is an OS X shortcut but both do the same thing.¬ You can then use your arrow
keys to move along the Dock. Press Enter/Return to open the app. You'll also
notice that when an app opens, an icon representing it will appear in the Dock.
It will stay there while the app is running and disappear when you quit it.
There are ways to keep it in the Dock if it is something you use frequently, if
that is your preferred way of accessing apps, but that's for another post.

2. Spotlight

Spotlight is an integrated search tool within OS X. It is very powerful, and
also serves as an app launcher. I think the default shortcut for opening the
Spotlight search field is Control + Space. I've changed mine to Command+Space.
You can then type the name of the app or a few letters of the app. Spotlight is
context-sensitive and so will try to goes. For example, "Saf" will give you
Safari. You can then arrow up and down the available choices, pressing Enter to
select your choice.

3. The Applications folder

In Finder, press Command+Shift+A This will bring up a window with all of your
currently installed applications. Press Command+O to open your choice.

That should eli you on your way for now, but remember also that you've got the
VoiceOver help Available to you. Pressing VO keys + H will bring this menu up.
You can also access VO help by pressing VO+Question Mark, but for now I think
the menu will suit you just fine.

Please feel free to write me off-list if you have questions about anything I've
written here or alternatively, to contact me on Skype. My details will be at
the end of this message.

Best wishes
TC :)

Re: Remotely logging into a Mac via SSH

2011-09-24 Thread Travis Siegel
When you launch an application via terminal, (whether in ssh or not)
the program will execute on the machine that contains the terminal
session. Therefore, launching text edit using the open command via
terminal will launch text edit on the remote host you're logged in
through. Since the gui part of the osx does not use the same input/
output methods as terminal does, there is no way to pipe that output
to the remote machine using standard tools.
Using ssh as a go-between, it is possible to execute programs on
remote machines and have the output show up on your local terminal,
but this takes a bit of trickory with both ssh and i/o redirection.
This of course doesn't work with gui apps though (more the pity)
since it would be an excellent way to handle remote administrations.
I don't know why apple doesn't build something like XServer/Xterm,
and provide a way for aqua to send it's graphical info across the
network to another machine, but until they do, any solutions we come
up with are just going to be (as you say) clunky work-arounds.
There's no technical reason why this couldn't be done, they already
allow apple script functions to be run cross machines, so building
something to interpret and control gui apps shouldn't really be all
that big of a stretch, and I know it's something that has been
frequently requested, and not just by us, lots of system admins would
like the ability too.
Something like this can be done using the xgrid technology, but that
treats the machines as a single one, just with multiple processors,
but still, no reason it can't be done, guess apple just doesn't
consider it a priority at the moment.

Re: mac help please

2011-09-24 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello Sean

May I give you a little word of advice? Don't expect OSX to function like
Windows. Forget that you ever used Window, and then you'll find the new
environment much easier to handle during the learning process.

Windows isn't like OSX, and visa versa. There are ways of doing things; but you
can't just expect the same functionality cross OS.

Please please don't think I'm trying to in any way patronise you because I'm
not. I'm trying to help you adjust.

However, what you want to do can be done, by adding a programme to the Doc. To
do this you need to:
1. Run your program from the Applications folder.

2. Open the Doc, by pressing either Control+F3 or VoiceOver+D. (VoiceOver = the
Control & option keys together).

3. Locate the name of your application; you can type the first few letters of
its name to jump to it quickly.
4. Press VoiceOver+Shift+M to bring up the context menu for the Doc.
5. Cursor down until you hear "Options submenu". Then cursor right.

You'll then land on "Keep application in the dock". Hit enter and you're done.

Now, you can open the dock using either Control+F3 or VoiceOver+D and type in
the first letter or two of your application.

I hope this helps in some way.

Lynne

Trouble In Paradise; Please Read!

2011-09-24 Thread Gordon & Lynne
Hello everybody

You may have noticed our server was down for about an hour earlier this
evening. We have seen the return of an old problem which has been bugging us
for some time now and not even Apple's engineers know what's causing it.

I won't go into all of the technical details now. But what I will tell you is
that Gordon has taken the decision that, before all this complex database stuff
dies totally, we need to port as much as we possibly can over to a different
E-Mail server. We have actually been planning to do this anyway, but the return
of our old enemy has caused us to move this up to the very top of the priority
list.

We will handle everything from here. You don't need to re-subscribe. But when
the change is complete, instead of having the subscriber pages at
*.tft-bbs.co.uk, they will be located at mail.mac-access.net which we think
makes more sense anyway.

Please understand that this is very large undertaking as it involves the
migration of a lot of complex databases. However, the current configuration
will remain intact and functional (we hope) until the new one is ready to go
prime time.

When it's all done, you'll still find the list post address exactly where it is
now. But your options pages will have moved to mail.mac-access.net.

I'll tell you more about this later, as it really is late here just now and
I've forbidden Gordon to start working tonight.

Lynne

Actually what I meant is if running Windows 32 Bit the OS doesn't recognize
anything over 3.3.

So yes, you can set the RAM to 2GB but Lion isn't the restriction.

Re: restoring my backed up materials after clean install of lion?

Hello Courtney:

I don't believe you can choose what get restored.

Basically the TimeMachine restores Applications ETC but not system files.

One more thing I thought of, you'll have to upgrade iTunes and Safarie. Also
you'll have to authorize the computer for iTunes.

Good luck and sounds like you'll do fine.

You are correct, andI would suggest if you can do a TimeMachine backup and
after installing Lion, you'll be asked if you want to restore from a

 Hi,
Thanks for this, but won't that restore me back to SL, if I back up before
I clean install? The backup I have is bootable.
 Thanks,
 Courtney

Re: Pairing the jam box with the mac?

2011-09-24 Thread Geoff Waaler
Hi,

I just tested here and what you described happens when my jb is connected to
another audio source via the line-in jack. Alternatively have you paired with
another device previously that is in range? From what you described it sounds
as though you have paired successfully and are dealing with a conflict.

HTH and Best regards.

  Hi,
Thanks for this. No, I haven't paired previously, but when I choose it in the
bluetooth setup assistant, and press continue, it seems to connect. After that,
it seems to connect, but it isn't used as the audio device right away. Then
when I tried to choose it as my audio device, my whole mac goes completely
silent. I'm using lion.

  Thanks,

2011-09-24 Thread Geoff Waaler
Hi Courtney,

I know it doesn't help you, but this went smoothly on my MBP under both SN and
Lion.

As I recall I brought my JB into pairing mode by moving the power switch to
the upper most position as you must have also done. I think it worked the same
way in SL, but I then went into status menus -> bluetooth -> setup bluetooth
device and it immediately located my JB. I assume you're not doing anything
differently -- is the Mac not finding your JB? Did you pair previously? If so
perhaps you want to delete the phantom device and retry?

  Best regards.

I suggest you set Windows up as 2GB, if you're running Lion, and if you can use
the 64-bit version of Windows.

Set the HD space for some silly value like 1TB (1024GB) and make sure the files
are not fragmented, this is the default behaviour.

Re: restoring my backed up materials after clean install of lion?

Hi John,
It doesn't appear that you can restore from the super duper volume, so
therefore, I freed up space on one of my external drives and did a time machine

lion install, I do have one question. When I do a restore from the time machine
backup, can I choose what's restored?
Thanks,

Re: Question about two apps

2011-09-24 Thread Marcy Weinberg
I've used both apps and think they are terrific!

Heytell is completely accessible, and allows you to communicate verbally with
friends who also have the app. It's kind of like a walkie-talkie system, where
you send a message and the other person replies. If the app is closed, you get
a message on the front of your device announcing that you have received a
heytell message from, and the sender's name. There is a close button, which
removes the dialogue but then you can go into the app when you are ready and
the message will play. Or there is a view button, which takes you directly
into the app and the message plays. To clarify, the message you've received
will play when you open the app, without you having to do anything.

Viz Wiz is also completely accessible. The first screen has a camera button to
take a picture of the object, which can be anything from a can of beans to a
shirt or a chair, or, well the list goes on and on. It then goes to a second
screen with a record button, which you double tap, speak your question such as
"What color is this shirt?" Double tap the screen again (don't flick or scroll
just double tap). The next screen has choices of where you want to send the
picture. You can send it to a web worker, to an IQ engine, email it to someone
who can email back the answer, or send it to Twitter for all your friends to
see and get an answer or ten from there. You can pick more than one of these
with checkboxes. Pressing the send button will take you to the last screen,
where you can view the answers as they arrive. Each screen has a short
explanation of what you should do on that screen.

Both apps are very easy to use, and give excellent results for what they are
designed to do.

Sure hope this helps! Go get them in the app store, they are both free!

VM fusion 4.1 final

2011-09-24 Thread mike maslo
Hi list:

Sorry for asking so many questions but I am about to install my other
operating system on my computer and I wanted to get the recommended settings
based upon my system I have.

I have 4 gig of ram right now but eventually will upgrade and 500 gig hard
drive.

Based upon this information what would you recommend my configuration for vm
fusion be for the guest computer?

Thanks so much and again I apologize for so many questions.

Re: What's the point of 1Password?

2011-09-24 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi Bryan

1Password doesn't seem to be doing a lot here, despite the fact that, I thin,
it's properly configured. I set it up to allow us to auto-login. But still
we're being presented with website passwords and asked to save the darn thing
every time by 1Password. We have the latest OSX extension installed and
configured. Per Dane's suggestion of yesterday I did go in to the preferences
and configure the password preferences. I set them to what should have been
automated mode, but to no effect it seems.

We have the latest 1Password application installed. Clearly I'm doing something
wrong but i'm absolutely baffled by what it might be. I'm getting to the point
now where I'm contemplating using the very excellent "TrashMe" application to
zap the darn thing and then just go back to the old way of doing things,
manually. I'd rather not, as the concept of 1Password does, I can't deny,
appeal to me. It has some very nice side-features which although we haven't
yet used, I'm sure we could make good use of them if we could get the thing
configured. But, it's just the usual thing I guess, time getting in the way at
the moment.

I've been working since 7 this morning to catch up with things I should have
got done this week for my paid side of things. Those are now done and ready
for the masses on Monday. So I'm trying now to get things configured for the
non-commercial side of our operations and just today we overcame a very large
obstacle which has been presenting a very big problem for a couple of months.

Anyway, back to the point. I'll probably end up tearing up the existing work
sheet and starting again. I'm not just throwing in the towel, don't get me
wrong. I'm sure that 1Password is capable of far more and better than it's
doing right now. I don't dispute for a second that this is most likely user
configuration error. But at the moment it has me most confused.

As for your security concerns, yes, I understand them totally. In fact I share
some of them. But in all fairness, I think 1Password is pretty safe, since
it's been designed from the ground up to be so. It's hard sometimes to let go
of old paranoia. I still have a few of them which I just can't drop. But I
think it's safe enough to trust 1Password. But I think I'll drop that just for
now and see if I can set up TrueCrypt. Lynne tried, but gave up after a while
because she found it too complicated. Well, she isn't a bird like me, I'll
have a shot at it now and see if I can't encrypt a folder or two so that we can
store it on Drop Box etc.

Re: Remotely logging into a Mac via SSH

2011-09-24 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi James

Hum! Actually I didn't hunk of that. I probably should have because I
considered, and dismissed, Skype screen sharing as a solution. That method is
too clunky, to use one of Lynne's favourite words. :)

I guess it's time to configure our iChat server.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Not nearly as elegant as SSH, but maybe a possibility.

Remotely logging into a Mac via SSH

Hi all

i wonder if anybody could answer this for me. When you log into another
terminal, such as a Mac, via SSH, is it possible to run an application on that
Mac, and have the display piped to the remote machine?

For instance; could one run something like Pages on the remote machine (server)

This probably isn't possible, I can see a hundred reasons why it wouldn't work.
But I'm kind of clutching at straws since I would very much like a remote

that all of the virtual ones offered by Internet providers, (such as Teamwork,

Hi Dane

Yes, I noticed that a while back while writing a report.

I don't think it's a VoiceOver issue since Lynne has also said that she's
seeing sluggish behaviour even without VO.

I think it's a Nisus issue.

installed the last Nisus Writer Pro update of a few weeks ago.

I'm going to try some other tests such as copying the document to a new file,
removing and redoing formatting etc to see what happens.

I always set the value to something silly, such as 1TB. Although you're never
going to be able to use that, the reason I do it is so that I'm sure that
whatever I do I'm never going to run short on my configuration. It works well
this way and I recommend it.

Re: VM fusion

2011-09-24 Thread Gordon Smith
Mike

The "Guest" OS is the Windows configuration. The "Host" is Mac OS in this
case. In other words the OS you boot into is the host and your virtual
machines are the guests.

As for your question about more memory. If you upgraded to 8GB for instance,
and then opted to allocate 5 or 6 GB to Windows, that would be perfectly
alright. The 50% advice is just what's commonly known as "playing it safe".
But in the real world, you can get away with much more than that.
