I experience the same problem. Despite Anne's very helpful advice I am still
not able to relocate the cursor either page up or down with the commands
suggested.

 Hello all:
last week there were some messages about moving text with VO in a document.
Somebody advised to use CMD Arrows to go to the beginning and end of lines
and documents. But how to go one page up or down? If I use my fingers on the
trackpad, Vo announces the next or previous page, but the cursor won't move.
Any ideas to do a voiceover effective page up or down?
 Thanks!

Usable mainstream GPS on the iPhone?

2012-01-30 Thread Michael Busboom
Greetings,

I will soon acquire an iPhone 4S and had a couple of questions about GPS
solutions.

1. Although I know of Sendero Look-Around, I am wondering if there is an app
that works with something like Google Maps. It would really be even better if
one could get turn-by-turn instructions.

2. I can't really make use of a GPS solution unless it works in several
countries. The appeal with regard to Google Maps is that this problem would be
solved.

3. Lastly, approximately how much do the GPS solutions that work with
VoiceOver cost?

My thanks to all,

Mike

2012-01-30 Thread Justin Mann
Mike,
Personally I think that Navigon s the best. First, it does have the ability to
work in Europe, and the U.S. Second, it's reasonably priced anywhere from $30
U.S at the low end, and $50 U.S at the high end. It doesn't use goggle maps,
but it does use the navteq mapping solution. As far as i can recall, it has
maps for , the U.S, Canada, Europe and I think Australia, but don't hold me to
the later.
Hope this helps,
Justin

This is helpful indeed, Justin!

In terms of the maps, do you download entire regions prior to using the
software, or are the maps downloaded from the cloud as you travel through a
given area?

Thank you very much,

Re: Usable mainstream GPS on the iPhone?

2012-01-30 Thread Geoff Waaler
Greetings Mike,

Motionx GPS Drive uses GoogleMaps, and has a setting where they can be cached
on the IOS device. This would minimize data usage, and since you can always go
to the cloud to retrieve current maps, they should in theory be always more
current. IMHO, from a VoiceOver perspective MotionX is a bit quirkier than
Navigon initially, in that many items are not labeled. For that reason you
probably would not use Motionx to search for businesses, but other apps such as
WhereTo and AroundMe accomplish this and integrate with Navigon and Motionx,
which, considering the price difference renders the Motionx POI search
inaccessibility a non factor.

I have Navigon and am very satisfied, but if I was making the choice today
would go with Motionx.

To answer your previous question, Navigon stores all maps on the phone. They
now require a subscription to keep the maps up to date. Unlike most reviewers
at the app store, I don't begrudge them ten dollars a year, since they do need
to pay their provider and have not passed those costs to me for over two years
before implementing the policy.

In the US app store Motionx costs $2.99 (I believe it may still be on sale for
$1.99). This includes one month of voice guidance. The app can be used
without voice guidance to plan routes, etc, or you have the option via in-app
purchase to subscribe to voice guidance for $3/mo or $20/year. By contrast,
Navigon NorthAmerica's fresh maps option costs $20 for two years.

I suspect one major advantage of Motionx in your case is that unlike Navigon,
you would not need to purchase two apps in order to use it in both Europe and
NorthAmerica.

Best regards.
Geoff

I think I will have to get a 4S with 64GB if I start downloading maps onto my

I will contact you either by phone or off-list with some more questions.

from $30 U.S at the low end, and $50 U.S at the high end. It doesn't use
goggle maps, but it does use the navteq mapping solution. As far as i can
recall, it has maps for , the U.S, Canada, Europe and I think Australia, but
don't hold me to the later.
 Hope this helps,
 Justin

better if one could get turn-by-turn instructions.

 2. I can't really make use of a GPS solution unless it works in several

 would be solved.

 3. Lastly, approximately how much do the GPS solutions that work with
 VoiceOver cost?

Re: Usable mainstream GPS on the iPhone?

2012-01-30 Thread Esther

Hi Mike,

I agree with Geoff's comments and recommendations but there is one importatn
correction: MotionX GPS Drive is only available in the US  There is another app
that they make, called MotionX GPS, that is available internationally and that
is often confused with the first product, but that does not have the features
that give turn-by-turn directions that Geoff is speaking of.  So if you want a
GPS app that can be used in both the US and in Europe, you'll have to choose
Navigon.  Also, you have to purchase separate apps for Navigon US (or North
America, or a region of the US) and for Navigon Europe (or a specific country).
The usage format is similar, but the map data is different.  The Navigon apps
typically take about 1.5 GB each to download.  You need twice the space to
unpack and update the app.

I also agree that you'll want to get the free AroundMe app and/or Where To? -- Discover your next destination
($2.99 from FutureTap). These have a much better interface for searching for points of interest, which can
then be sent to the default Maps app, or Navigon, MotionX GPS Drive, TomTom, etc. They'll list matches to
your search terms in order of distance from your current location or, you can set this to be a location from
your contacts or that you type in, if you're planning travel.  These are great apps to have, even if you
don't have an iPhone or use GPS apps, and I used both on the iPod Touch before I ever got an iPhone.  The
really useful function that was added to the Where To app last July is the ability to use the built-in
compass on an iPhone or iPad with 3G, and update information on direction and distance as you travel.  So,
for example, if you search for a restaurant, and then check the detailed screen for your POI, near the top
right corner of the screen, you'll hear something like, Direction and distance, right, 240 yards,
and this will update as you travel in both terms -- so you could hear slight right or
straight ahead, and the distance decrease as you approach your POI.  This can be set to use
metric distances in the settings.

I should probably mention that I've heard that some iPhone users in
Scandinavian countries find the POI database in AroundMe out of date, compared
to the one in Navigon. That's the only set of locations I know of where users
don't really like these POI helper apps. Both AroundMe and Where To work
internationally, and also support other language localizations.

HTH.  Cheers,

Esther

For the Page Up and Page Down VO commands to work, you have to be interacting
with the text area. I'm talking about the VO commands, not the normal OS

Voiceover should indeed be turned on automatically, as it does on my

Re: questions about mac mini

2012-01-30 Thread John Panarese
For me, that cable didn't work. I had thought it might, but,
unfortunately, I believe that is for a flat screen monitor.

As for Maria's questions;

 1. can i use a standard usb keyboard with the mini? or can i use the apple
 keyboard i have for my
If i use the apple keyboard how would i pare it? would i need sighted
 assistance?

Answer; I use a USB keyboard with my Mini. However, you can use a bluetooth
keyboard as well. The setup is accessible. The only trick is to make sure
you can type the pass code on the keyboard when you are prompted.

2. can i use a standard monitor with the mac mini?

Answer; Yes, this won't be a problem. You might have to get an adaptor, but
I'm not sure.
 3. what is the command to turn voiceover on so i can start using the computer?
is there any setup, or is there a way to turn voiceover on when the computer
 is booted?

Answer; Command F5 will toggle VoiceOver on. When you first get the Mini, you
will go through the initial setup. You will be asked if you want to use
VoiceOver and to use command-F5 to turn it on. Once VoiceOver is on, it will
be on each time you reboot or turn on the Mini again.

 4. what software do people use to broadcast on internet radio?

Answer; I don't have much experience with this, though I think, Nice Cast, is
a program I have heard some folks use for this.

 5. do i need speakers or headphones or are they built in?

Answer; The Mini has a very nice speaker as it is. You certainly can get
external speakers, but I use it with the one built in. I also use my earphones
that came with my iPhone when I need to do so.

Answer; I use a USB keyboard with my Mini. However, you can use a
bluetooth keyboard as well. The setup is accessible. The only trick is
to make sure you can type the pass code on the keyboard when you are
 prompted.

 2. can i use a standard monitor with the mac mini?

Answer; Yes, this won't be a problem. You might have to get an adaptor,
 but I'm not sure.

is there any setup, or is there a way to turn voiceover on when the

Answer; Command F5 will toggle VoiceOver on. When you first get the Mini,
you will go through the initial setup. You will be asked if you want to
use VoiceOver and to use command-F5 to turn it on. Once VoiceOver is on,
it will be on each time you reboot or turn on the Mini again.

 4. what software do people use to broadcast on internet radio?

Answer; I don't have much experience with this, though I think, Nice Cast,
is a program I have heard some folks use for this.

 5. do i need speakers or headphones or are they built in?

Answer; The Mini has a very nice speaker as it is. You certainly can get
external speakers, but I use it with the one built in. I also use my
earphones that came with my iPhone when I need to do so.

I wondered the same thing. I might actually try that this evening and

should fix this situation so that a monitor would not be required for
anything except for using the mac without VoiceOver.

RE: Apple Mail on a Mac Concerning Message List

2012-01-30 Thread Margaret Booth
Another way of moving from an email that you are on in the message table to
read it is pressing VO J (control options J). Then you can use your
navigation keys to read the email. Then press VO J to go back to the message
table. Another hint is to go to the top of all of the emails is pressing
shift, function, VO left arrow and to go to the bottom of the emails is to
press shift function VO right arrow.
To create a new email press command N and then fill out the fields. To move
through the fields I press VO right arrow and once you have finished the
email press shift command D and this will send the email.

Subject: Re: Apple Mail on a Mac Concerning Message List

Hi,
Please know that I am very new to using my Mac and mail on it. But, here's
what I am doing to read my mail.

I open the mail program and simply use the arrow keys to move through the
mailboxes (actually, I often use a letter key to skip directly to a mailbox
pressing the letter that is the first letter in that box's name).
I also use just the arrow keys to move up and down the list of messages,
hitting return to open a message.
I use delete to delete a message either before or after opening it.

The only time that I am using the VO keys to navigate within mail is to move
left or right from column to column (from mailbox to the list of messages in
it, for example). In that case, I use VO plus either right or left arrow.

Using this method, I'm able to hear the indication of unread, you replied to
this message, etc. for each message in the list for a mailbox.

I tried out this method inspired by the advice of a friend who suggested
that sometimes using Apple keyboard commands is easier than using specific
VO commands.

I hope that this is helpful, but I look forward to hearing from others who
know more than I do about this. :-)

One thing that I have wondered is if there is a quick way to go from the
bottom of a list of messages back up to the top?

Thanks,
Laurie M. (and, thank you, list owners, for this great list)

I just figured out what is going on. If I turn VoiceOver curser tracking
off with VO+Shift+F3, I can then move up and down the list and if any unread
messages are present, I will then hear the Unread spoken. I'm convinced
now that Mail marks the currently select message as read even before we Jump
to it with VO+j key. Still learning how to get the most of these Mac apps.
Another example of these flags is when you reply to someone, the Replied
flag shows up and that doesn't go away when scrolling down the list. These
images must have been pre-labeled for use with VoiceOver.

Thanks for the quick reply. I don't quite catch what you mean by the
image. When I come into the message list, I never hear Unread for any
single unthreaded messages. Is this possibly caused by Mail marking the
thing as Unread as soon as it is selected by highlighting on the list? I
really like being to identify read and unread messages while scrolling up
and down the list like in other mailers.

Thanks again for the help to this Mac newbie.

 Hi,

When interacting with the list of messages in a given mail box, I can't
tell when they are read or unread. I hear Unread on collapsed threads but
nothing on any other expanded or unthreaded subjects. Does anyone else
experience this?

I'm using latest version of Lion.

Go to the File menu and you'll find an option called Export. You'll find the
Word option in this dialogue. Be aware though that if you're document is
complex, not everything will be successfully converted. You could also convert
to RTF, and I doubt that people would notice. RTF is native to the Mac.
