Is there a good, Accessible alternative to the Find My Friends App here in Europe?

2012-02-01 Thread Michael Busboom
Hello everyone,

Yesterday, I learned about an app from Geoff Waaler, and I wanted to install it
on my iPhone. The app to which I am referring is called Find My Friends.
When I went to the link that Geoff provided, I was told that I couldn't
download it because I was not authorized to download things from the US App
Store.

I then went into the Austrian App Store directly from my iPhone and did a
search for the App. One result came up and it was a gratis App called Find My
Friends and I from a company calledFastWhere. Is anyone familiar with this
program, and can I use it to know the whereabouts of friends using the Find My
Friends App from the US iStore? If not, does anyone know of a program that is
equivalent and would exchange information with Find My Friends?

If I am not mistaken, Find My Friends is an App developed by Apple. If this
is the case, then I am wondering why it is not available here in Austria.

Finally, I will be going to the States later this month for an extended visit.
While I am physically present in the States, will I be able to purchase Apps
from the US iStore?

Many thanks,

Mike

Interesting this one, the only way I know of is to remember where you
got the iPhone from. If it's from a carrier chances are it will be
locked. If it's from Apple or some other reseller then chances are
unlocked but depending on retailer it could be locked as well.

Look at your status bar. It will say att or TMobile or in my friend's case,
sprint. Also your phone will be a lot cheaper. An unlocked phone will cost you
about $700 or so.

bit the bullet! but have more questions.

2012-02-01 Thread Maria From Australia
HI. aI am away from home. I recently got the news that my pc is broken and
probably can't be fixed. Unfortunately I don't have a back up of my phone on a
drive anywhere here. I am pretty sure the data is unrecoverable besides it's
12 hours by car away. So, i bit the bullet and am now the proud owner of a mac
mini. Is there any way i can create a library and back up my phone the way it
is currently and then sinc it? Not too worried about the music and books, I
have most of them on a hard drive or on my windows netbook i have with me.
don't really want to re download all the apps though. Failing that, is there a
way i can back all the apps to the cloud if i get more cloud space? How would i
then sinc the phone with itunes and my new mac? what should i do about
deauthorising the computer that's gone bye byes?

thanks for any and all answers. Hope this is not too off topic.
Will ask my other questions in another post.

Re: List Recorder suggestions welcome

2012-02-01 Thread Marcy Weinberg
When in the app, it is sometimes difficult to use because with the slightest
move of the phone, it ends up in edit mode, or list commands, or even wipe out.
This makes it difficult to listen to the list, or add text or a recording.

I think the app is great, and if there could be a way for this not to happen so
easily, that would make the app even better, and certainly easier to use.

 Hello listers,

I am a enthusiastic List Recorder user. I've been gathering personal
recommendations for the developer concerning improvements, fixes, and
desired new features. I'm wondering if other List Recorder users would be
willing to share such thoughts with me.

How would you like to see this app improved?

Here are some of my current favorite desired improvements

 Modest suggestions:

I would like the default list sort method to be manual rather then by
 creation date.
I would like moved items to be automatically unchecked once they are moved
I would like to be placed on the first item of a list when I move to a
 list
Within in a single list I would like to be able to drag and drop items for
 quick reorganization
I would like a option for a different sound for signaling the start of a
recording. A clear click or pop would be just fine.

 Big suggestions:

I would like to take written notes while I'm recording and later be able to
review my written notes and if desired have the recording play back where I
was when I made the note.

I would like the option for a very fast quick record even when List
recorder is in the background. For example I could be on a call and shake
the phone and make a recording and have it be waiting in list recorder when
I go back to the app.

I would like the option to use the due date area to have my list recorder
 item become a calendar event

Or, perhaps List Recorder items that come due could show up in
 notifications.
I would like to be able to back up all my items onto the computer easily
and also restore them back to the phone. I realize part of this is all
ready available, as we can back up to a computer.

I would like to be able to import a recording to make part of a list.
For that matter it might be good to be able to import text as well.

 fixes:

List recorder should return to the behavior broken in iOS5 where recording
continues after the phone locks. Currently it stops recording.

Thank you for any suggestions big or small.

Currently I use many devices to meet my work needs, Victor Reader, Olympus
recorder, Milestone 312, and if I could only have one device I'd pick my
 iPhone with List Recorder.

I have done a few rustic podcasts on using List Recorder version 2.2. I'm
no professional. However, I'm told they will be eventually made available
 at sixth mode.com

The developer truly listens to and acts on suggestions. please share yours
with me. I'd love to keep this app discussion on list but if people would
rather contact me off list that is fine.

Hi Maria,
Applevis now has Mac applications reviewed as well, so you might want to
check around their site. They just added that recently.

As for the Bluetooth keyboard, yes, it's probably best to turn off BT on
the opposite device. I do this as well.

Lastly, you can set up Gmail in the Apple Mail program. By default, it
will set up an imap account, and it should be pretty straight forward to
accomplish.

Re: How to tell if iPhone is locked to a specific network

2012-02-01 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello All,
Do any of you have an iPhone which you know is not locked to any specific
network? If you have such an iPhone can you please check what the status bar at
the top of the screen says. Does it tell you the name of the network associated
with your current SIM card as it would for an iPhone which is locked to that
network or does it say something else?
Many thanks.

Re: ftp in mac osx lion, having trouble

2012-02-01 Thread Travis Siegel
Giving someone write access allows them to write files to that
folder. That's all the permission you need to delete stuff.
If you want them to upload things, then their upload folder should be
outside of the project folder as a whole, so that there is no access
for them to get to other files.
It won't hurt to let them have read access, but it's likely you'll
need to add execute permissions to the folder, sometimes some of the
unix variants (and I've not tested osx for this behavior) won't allow
anyone to read or write to the folder regardless of their permissions
if they don't have execute permission. Odd, I know, but I've seen
this behavior in slackware linux especially, and one or two other
commercial unix variants such as aix and SunOs, though I'm not sure
if it was just an artifact of the way we were doing things, or if
it's an across the board problem.
The simplest way to control users and their permissions is via
groups, add them to a group that only has write access, then set the
folder permissions to write only, for the group, then they can't see
the other contents in the folder. However, for reasons stated above,
write only access isn't always the best option. Some ftp clients
will try to cd to the folder one level at a time, and if they can't
hit the interveneing folders, they will fail even though they're not
supposed to care what's before that level in the file hiearchy.
In addition, I've seen ftp clients fail because they couldn't read
the folder as well, though this hasn't been a problem with the
command-line ftp programs I've used.
Check to see what client this person is using, and try it yourself,
to see if it's arguing or not. Then, if it is, check your system
logs to see what the error actually is, this will help track down the
problems. In osx, the console app (located in the utility folder)
will give you access to the system logs.

hth.

Re: bit the bullet! but have more questions.

2012-02-01 Thread Steve Holmes
To the question of deauthorization of computers, you can deauthorize
all your computers with a single hit once each year from the web site.
If you had to do more often, then you might have to pleed with them
over the phone. I thought I was gonna have to do that recently myself
because my stupid windows environment got authorized twice some how.
But I think I can go into iTunes on that machine and deauthorize one
time to hopefully reduce the count.

Good luck on the rest of the computer woes.

answer: You can create a cloud account and then back up your phone to it.
5 gigs is a lot though storage. I have 89 apps on my phone and I only use
2 gigs of space. I now synch contacts and apps and pics to the cloud and
ICal events and it works great.

answer: not much. You can only have 5 computers authorized at once. I think
you can wait until you use all 5 spaces and then I believe choose to reset
all of them. but I'm not sure on that matter.

Re: List Recorder suggestions welcome

2012-02-01 Thread Esther
Hello Eric and Others,

I'd make a few revisions to some of your suggested modifications for List
Recorder:

You said:
• I would like the default list sort method to be manual rather then by
creation date.

Instead of changing the default display sort method, why not request that users
can manually rearrange the list items, in much the same way that users can
re-arrange the order of bookmarks in Safari, or that I can re-order items I
have turned into a list in the Simplenote app (where changing notes into a list
is one of the premium subscriber features) by touching the iPhone at the right
edge for the listed item and dragging it up or down?

This is akin to your suggestion:
• Within in a single list I would like to be able to drag and drop items for
quick reorganization

I also like the ability in the Simplenote app to pin certain notes to the top
of a list, regardless of sort order.

I agree with yourself, Bryan, and others, that the ability to record while the
screen is locked is a must fix item.

And certainly, more language localizations for the app, including Spanish as
Daniela suggested, would be useful.

Cheers,

Esther

Hi.

The possibility to record when the screen is locked would be a great fix. I
need the possibility to add more recording to a recording, to append something
to an existing recording. It would also be great if we could delete some of a
recording that is unwanted.

Best regards Annie.

But I think I can go into iTunes on that machine and deauthorize one

answer: You can create a cloud account and then back up your phone to it.
5 gigs is a lot though storage. I have 89 apps on my phone and I only use
2 gigs of space. I now synch contacts and apps and pics to the cloud and
ICal events and it works great.

what should i do about deauthorising the computer that's gone bye byes

answer: not much. You can only have 5 computers authorized at once. I think
you can wait until you use all 5 spaces and then I believe choose to reset
all of them. but I'm not sure on that matter.

voiceover language question, please

2012-02-01 Thread Laurie Mehta
Hi,

Can voiceover read/speak in more than one language, depending on what text it
encounters?

On my MacBook Air, I have set language preferences in the order that I want,
and I have enabled the scripts that I want, but voiceover is not reading in any
language other than English, regardless of text. Apparently, the screen
displays all scripts correctly, it is just that voiceover is not reading
anything other than English.

What I am hoping to achieve is what I have using NVDA in Windows. With NVDA,
the reading can be set to read through text even switching automatically
between languages.

For example, if I have a document written in Hindi using Dev Nagri script, in
which there is also some English text, NVDA will read both the Hindi and the
English smoothly, switching as appropriate between the languages as the text
alternates.

So, can voiceover be multi-lingual? If so, how do I set this up?

Thanks very much!

- Laurie

Do you have a card designated as, my card, in Address Book? It seems, from
what I have read, you need to have a card in your address book created for

I'm not seeing any error messages in that log file. Either ftpd
didn't report any, or the log didn't display them when you searched
for them.
According to the log you showed, all that happened was a connection
(several times) nothing occurred after connect, not an attempted
upload, or even any downloads, or errors reading the file folders.

Sorry it's such a pain, but it does get this way sometimes. :)

Re: List Recorder suggestions welcome

2012-02-01 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Brian and others,

Wow the responses to this question have been amazing and helpful. I'm not sure
the best way to answer all of these so I think I will just work my way through
one at a time and try not to repeat information as I go.

The developer knows about the problem about recording stoping when the screen
locks. She plans to do a fix in the next release. Please let me know about
any other needed fixes.

 Hello Eric,

Thanks for taking the time to do this. I was hoping to switch from
ClearRecord to List Recorder for recording my class lectures this semester,
but the lock screen issue bit me in my first class, causing me to unknowingly
not record the entire class, so I haven't touched List Recorder since then.

I like the current feature set and the suggestions you mentioned, but for me
the app is currently not an option because of the lock screen bug.

I would like the option for a very fast quick record even when List recorder
is in the background. For example I could be on a call and shake the phone
and make a recording and have it be waiting in list recorder when I go back
 to the app.

I would like the option to use the due date area to have my list recorder
 item become a calendar event

Or, perhaps List Recorder items that come due could show up in notifications.
I would like to be able to back up all my items onto the computer easily and
also restore them back to the phone. I realize part of this is all ready
available, as we can back up to a computer.

Currently I'm aware that List recorder is available in French and Norwegian.
This was only possible because other enthusiastic List Recorder users
volunteered to do the translations. If other folks with the needed language
skills can offer their help I am sure the developer would work with us to make
the App available to more people.

I had not thought about being able to append to a recording. I'll add that to
my growing list of suggestions.

I'm not really sure what doing a translation for the app requires. I'm sure
that at least all the text on the app that is in English must be translated to
the new Language. this must include button titles, headings, and probably
tutorials on the app, and more I don't know about.

If you really think you might be able to volunteer that type of time write to
me, off list, and I'll facilitate that connection.

I like the current feature set and the suggestions you mentioned, but for

I would like to take written notes while I'm recording and later be able
to review my written notes and if desired have the recording play back
where I was when I made the note.

I would like the option for a very fast quick record even when List
recorder is in the background. For example I could be on a call and shake
the phone and make a recording and have it be waiting in list recorder
when I go back to the app.

The developer truly listens to and acts on suggestions. please share
yours with me. I'd love to keep this app discussion on list but if people
would rather contact me off list that is fine.

Re: List Recorder suggestions welcome

2012-02-01 Thread Eric Caron
Hi marcy,

Remember I'm responding to these messages as a List Recorder user. I
have opinions that are different from other users and the developer.

Personally, I agree with Marcy. I find the gestures can activate things
unexpectedly and I would rather just use the touch screen. The default setting
on List Recorder is to have all the phone movements turned on. This means as
you tilt the phone in different ways things happen. Luckily, in settings you
can turn off all these motions or just those you don't want.

I've turned them all off!

To do this in List Recorder go to settings and keep swiping until you hear no
motion mode. then one more swipe and you have the option to turn this off or
on. To stop the motions turn the switch on.

I'd really like to know if people like the motions or if people don't like them
or turn them off.

When I first got List Recorder it was the original version. I saw a lot of
potential and contacted the developer. I've been trying to improve the App
ever since. Frankly, I don't use the motions at all and found them slow and
intrusive. Sadly, I think the developer put a lot of work into them and liked
the idea of giving people a fun and unique way to move around the App.

So, other users, do you use the motions or turn them off. Do they improve your
experience or would you not miss them if they were gone?

When in the app, it is sometimes difficult to use because with the slightest

I think the app is great, and if there could be a way for this not to happen
so easily, that would make the app even better, and certainly easier to use.

According to the log you showed, all that happened was a connection (several

downloads, or errors reading the file folders.
Sorry it's such a pain, but it does get this way sometimes. :)
