Yeah, I don't get it either. I can never seem to get Wifi sync to work. . .
I have never been able to get it to work, it always says that my Mac isn't
available.

Re: Maxamising windows in text edit

2012-02-15 Thread Travis Siegel
I'm not sure what you mean by maximize the window. What are you
trying to accomplish?
If you want text edit to be the only item vissible on the screen,
then use hide others (in the text edit menu, usually command-shift-h)
This should move all other running applications out of the viewing
area, leaving just text edit in the foreground. I'm told this
doesn't always work, but when it does, it frees the screen of
clutter, making it easier for sighted folks to help you find things
on the screen.
If you're trying to make the window as large as possible, then use
the zoom option it's available under the window menu, though it
doesn't have a keystroke tied to it by default, though if it's
something you use regularly, you can assign one of your choosing to
it via the keyboard shortcuts panel in preferences. There's no exact
windows equivalent of maximize the window, so that it takes up the
whole screen, because even the zoom option only makes the window a
little larger, but from what I've been told, it still doesn't cover
the entire viewing area, though it does make things a bit larger for
those who can't see it clearly, or if you have a bunch of windows
open, and your sighted helper can't tell which one you're on, it does
serve to point out where you are.
Especially if you have a lot of windows open, it can be difficult to
pinpoint which one you're currently using sometimes.

Amadeus Pro Small Podcasts

2012-02-15 Thread Eric Caron
Paul and other interested listers,

Paul had asked about some additional features in Amadeus Pro. The link
below is to a zipped folder with two podcast that were done by Dave, a man who
wanted to add to the podcast I did a few years ago. He said I could give them
to those who might be interested.

It has been some time since I heard them. The style is rather unique, and
there is good information covered.

Here is the link for anyone who might be interested in trying them. I'll leave
it up for a week or so.

Re: Determining Status of Download

2012-02-15 Thread Bryan Jones
I can confirm that the Command+Option+L combo does not open the safari
downloads window on my MBA running Lion 10.7.3 if I have the toolbar hiddne. VO
announces "Show downloads" but does not open the window. Same results if I have
the toolbar hidden but the bookmarks bar showing. Same results if VO is turned
off. Same results if I try to activate the downloads window through the View
menu option. Same results with the latest build of webkit. Same results if I've
had 3 extra shots of espresso before trying this.

BTW Esther -- Glad to hear you're now running Lion! I'll drop my plan to
request that the next Applevis campaign be to "Get Esther upgraded to Lion." ;)

Cheers,
Bryan

Re: Help with mailboxes in mail for mac (lion)

2012-02-15 Thread Travis Siegel
I don't have lion, (don't have the ram for it) but it's possible your
mailboxes aren't trashed at all. If you highlight the trash folder,
and use the vo-backslash key combination, it will close the trash
folder, then you can navigate up/down (mostly up) and see if your
other folders are still there. It's perfectly normal for your
mailboxes to show up in the trash folder, because that's where your
deleted mail goes. This does not mean that your mailboxes are gone,
only that all the messages you deleted are in the trash. This has no
bearing at all on the folders that exist in your actual inbox.

Obviously, it is possible you've deleted your entire inbox and all
it's folders, but it's rather difficult to do that by accident, so
I'd wager you'll find your mailboxes after you collapse the trash
folder, then go up again to see the other mailboxes.

Hi Daniela,

I'm not a strong mail user. I'm sorry this happened to you. It would
be very stressful to me if this happened.

The only thing I can think to try is to try pressing rebuild the last option in
the mailbox tab in Mail.

Other then that I would probably go to a time machine backup or a Carbon Copy
cloner backup., that is if you have either available.

Sorry I don't have more or better suggestions.

Re: Determining Status of Download

2012-02-15 Thread John Panarese
Hi Sther,
My toolbar is showing, so that is probably a factor for sure. I don't
normally hide the toolbar.

Like I said, when I first installed, Lion, the option-command-l would not
work at all to show the downloads window. I had to use an Apple Script toggle
to get it to work. However, someone pointed out to me a few months ago that
the shortcut was suddenly working again. When I then tried it, I suddenly was
having success. So, I assume the toolbar might be a factor now.

Hi!

I'm replying to you privately as this thread will probably stray off topic
for the list a little .

The first thing you need to be able to use Pandora is a VPN or Virtual
Private Network, there are several services around which provide these
including Hotspot Shield at the Mac client is
accessible and there's a free version available though I would suggest that
you get the paid version as its not restricted, has no advertising etc.

Once you're "behind the shield" networks in the U.S. are fooled into
thinking you're in the States rather than from Australia thus you can access
a whole heap of material you normally wouldn't be able to otherwise from
Australia if you were using your standard Internet.

I'm from Australia myself and I use a VPN here though my system is a little
more complex than what I've outlined, I won't go into it here unless you're
particularly interested.

Now the next thing and this is of particular concern if you plan to use
Pandora, as I understand it the web interface isn't particularly accessible
thus you need a Pandora client or player, I have tested one for Windows
called "Hope", its $10.00 to buy and is very nice, as yet I haven't tested a
Pandora client for Mac but they're out there, at least 2 of them.

Re: Determining Status of Download

2012-02-15 Thread Esther
Hi John,

I'm doing this on a clean install of Lion from about a week ago, and the
Command-Option-L shortcut for viewing the Downloads window in Safari only works
for me if I have the Safari toolbar showing. Otherwise, even though VoiceOver
says "Show Downloads" when I press Command-Option-L in Safari, it doesn't
actually show me the downloads window.

I'm used to hiding my toolbar, which is a habit so that the extra elements
don't show up when I use item chooser menu. This is not a big thing, because
there aren't that many of them, but it's a habit of mine, since I can still use
Command-Option-F to go to the Google search field or Command-L to move to the
address bar, and the toolbar will open up for the operation and then close
again.

But what I found is that:
1) Command-Option-L only works if my Safari toolbar is showing -- otherwise
there's no downloads window, even if it is announced
2) Even if the toolbar is showing, Command-Option-L didn't work for me until
after the first time I navigated to the Downloads button and pressed it.

Again, this is the experience from a recent clean install.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Yep, it can be used outside the U.S. if you use a VPN service such as
Witopia, I use a Windows client at the moment but would like to use the
service on my Mac so I'm going to investigate these clients, even better if
at least one is accessible and better still! if it integrates seamlessly
into Airfoil.

Hi, Esther. Thanks for the info. I've upgraded my system to Lion this past
fall, so I'm still learning. Worse yet, since my work uses Windows, I don't
have a lot of time to devote to my Mac, so it gets confusing at times. Again,
thanks.

Re: Determining Status of Download

2012-02-15 Thread Esther
Hi John,

Can you use Command-Option-L from Safari to show the downloads window if you
don't have the toolbar showing? Also, I thought that when I first tried this
(even with the toolbar showing) that I couldn't get Command-Option-L to show
the downloads window. It was only after I navigated to the "Downloads button"
in the Safari toolbar and pressed it (VO-Space) that I was able to use
Command-Option-L from Safari (as opposed to from Finder) to show the Downloads
window.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: Determining Status of Download

2012-02-15 Thread Esther
Hi Matthew,

I'm new to Lion, so someone else may have a better answer for you. If you're
in Safari, there's a "Downloads button" on the toolbar that you can navigate to
by pressing Command-Option-F (to move to the Google search field) then navigate
with VO-Right arrow to the button and press it (VO-Space). You need to have
your toolbar showing in order for this to work (Command-Shift-Backslash to
toggle this between show and hide on an English input keyboard).

Once you have pressed this button, the Command-Option-L shortcut to bring up
the Downloads window of Safari seems to work from Safari. When I first started
using Safari 5.1.2 under Lion a few days ago, I tried Command-Option-L and
couldn't get this shortcut to work for me from Safari. It will work from
Finder to show the downloads folder, but not from Safari.

The issue was that I usually keep my Safari toolbar hidden.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi, John. Thanks for the tip. Also, have some questions about Fusion. Does
the full version download contain the Fusion Tools, compared to the "lite"
download, or do they both have the tools? Thanks.

To navigate letter-by-letter, use vo-shift-left/right arrow. That
will move you a character at a time, as long as you're already
interacting with the item in question.

Re: Safari questions

2012-02-15 Thread Esther
Hi Geoff, Kristeen, Gordon, and Others,

I still use item chooser menu a lot, especially since it works well for both
current and earlier versions of Mac OS X (all the way back to Tiger). A nice
feature of item chooser menu is that you can refine your search for an item to
include category. For example, if I'm using item chooser menu on a web page
like the one for Applevis, and I want to find the links for their "Campaign of
the Month", I can type VO-I to bring up item chooser menu, then quickly type "c
a m" to filter results in the menu for elements that match those letters, then
quickly type "l i n k" to further filter those results for links. If I'm
looking for a button I might quickly type "b u t" instead for the second match.
By then, there are only a few matches on the menu, and I can arrow down to the
match and press either "Return" or use VO-Space to be taken to my selection.
Remember that item chooser menu only navigates you to an element. If there's a
link or button that you're trying to activate you
still need to do another VO-Space, etc. to actually press. If you decide to
amend your item chooser search terms, press the "Delete" key and start typing
again. Item chooser menu is a simple yet very powerful tool to help find
things.

Geoff, in what regards do feel item chooser's functionality has been abated in
Lion? Also, which web item rotor settings do people find most helpful to
use/add? (From the experience on the iPhone, surprisingly, images are very
useful for navigation on the iOS screens).

Cheers,

Esther

Hi Kristeen,

One tool that may help with searching is the item chooser (VO-i). Its
functionality seems to have been abated in Lion, but its remains a way to
quickly skip to elements on the web and elsewhere.

Yep, it can be used outside the U.S. if you use a VPN service such as Witopia,
I use a Windows client at the moment but would like to use the service on my

Unable to use iTunes while autofilling iPhone

2012-02-15 Thread Sunil Peck
Hi,

I wanted to watch a video in iTunes while iTunes was simultaneously autofilling
my iPhone.

But soon after the process started I heard the 'iTunes busy' announcement when
I pressed a key or tried to navigate anywhere within iTunes.

I turned Voiceover off and back on several times but the problem persisted.

After about half an hour I powered my MacBook down because I had no way of
finding out what was going on in iTunes or how to get it to function properly.

I'm using a MacBook Pro running the latest version of Lion and my iPhone is a
16gb 3GS. I had allocated either 8 or 10gb of the iPhone's memory and the
library it was autofilling from is about 40gb.

Is there anything I can do so that next time, iTunes isn't rendered completely
useless during the autofill process? If for instance it's worth autofilling
less of my iPhone's memory, how much would it be worth reducing the 8 or 10gb
by?

Thanks in advance for advice.

Sunil

Re: Safari questions

2012-02-15 Thread Gordon Keen
I would also suggest that once interacting with the link you use the vo plus w
toggle to read on the first press the word, second press by character and third
press by phonetic spelling.

It is also very useful to explore the potential of the web item rotor with vo
plus u then moving the options with vo plus right arrow.

Hope this helps

Re: Safari questions

2012-02-15 Thread Thomas McMahan
In answer to your first question, yes v o shift down thus interact, if it is is
text then you can read letter by letter with v o right arrow. If it's a link
though, no, so if you want the letters of a link then copy it over into a new
document or in a new mail, unless it's in the address bar itself, then by
interacting you can get it letter by letter. As for the other questions, don't
know because I don't use the find very often simply because I want to be at
where I am hearing what is spoken anyway so will put up with navigating
instead.
