Hello, in vmware you have 3 windows. One for vmware, another for the virtualized system , and another, i think for the parameters. To quit vmware : if is is possible close the virtualised program as usual in the non-virtualised. And after, you coud quit vmware with command w or command q. You also can quit vmware when the virtualisez program is running. Vmware will ask you whether you want to quit or no If your answer is yet, it'll close the virtualized program in a good way Regards. My advice for you is to try and use the mac as much as you can instead of trying to mix windows and mac especially with you trying to transfer over. Makes things a little tricker to learn. Re: intro and switching from windows/jaws to mac/voice over
Hello, I've switch 1 year ago. At the begin I was only user of mac. After some months I've installed a virtual windows with vmware fusion and Jaws and also a bootcamp partition. Because I needed a Windows for my job to work with a lot of tables and pdf i-forms. I do all my private things with the Mac and VO and most of my job with the mac too. I don't know jaws very good (I was an user of Window Eyes witch doen't work with a virtualised windows). I advice you to use the Mac as much as you can. it difficult to compare win and mac and the way to Use VoiceOver is very different than VO. If you use the 2 in the same time, you will progress slowly and mixe all. It's my own experience. And now I still make some VO command on the windows It gives my some times surprises. If you want a bit help, you can contact me in private. Regards, Murielle avr. 2012 à 22:11, Shannon Dyer a écrit : Hi, Laurel. I recognize you from the NAGDU list. Yeah and when on windows I'm still a strong jaws user. I personally have set up a VM on my mac now for windows if I need it but still haven't made the full switch to mac based computers due to hardware limits on my part. -Original Message- From: mac-access-boun...@mac-access.net [mailto:mac-access-boun...@mac-access.net] On Behalf Of Laurel Sent: Tuesday, April 24, 2012 15:28 To: Mac OSX iOS Accessibility Subject: Re: intro and switching from windows/jaws to mac/voice over Hi Mike, Thanks for the help. RE: intro and switching from windows/jaws to mac/voice over
My answers to your questions would be 1, what were some of the most important changes from using jaws to using voice over that you who made that switch had to get used to? My answer is take your time. VO is different to Jaws, some things are better, some things are more difficult such as selecting text on web pages. There are work around for most problems. 2, what are the biggest things I should know about switching? Try to learn about interaction as a key concept. Setting the tab key to automatically interact will make this concept more intuitive. The way the Mac cursors with text is different to the way that Windows screenreaders read. You can set Mac to work like a windows screen reader but I would not recommend it as it creates other problems with cursor navigation. . Try to learn how the Mac does things. Ask again on this this list if you need help with this. 3, what are the best web tutorials for learning voice over? I think the Vision Australia podcasts are the best introduction to using the Mac as they are short, to the point and clear. 4, if any of you used Kurzweil1000 for Windows, what did you do for a mac? Are there any other OCR programs that work with voice over and are as good as Kurzweil? I have good experience with EyePal for Mac but this is a very expensive option. Other people report good experience with Docuscan with HoverCam with is slightly is less expensive but still pricey. At the budget end some people report success with Abbey Finereader Express. 5, I have office for mac, how vo accessible is this and what can I do to make it more accessible? Not accessible at all and nothing you can currently do about it. Also unfortunately Open Office is no longer accessible under Lion. What you do depends on how extensive Office functions you need. I Works applications from Apple are a cheap option but are significantly different from Windows applications and will be a significant learning curve. I have found limited VO tutorials etc for VO support for these applications. Nisus Writer Pro is a good Word processor for the Mac but VO support for reading Tables is pretty non existent in Nisus and other word Processors. There are various clunky work around including copying the tables as text into text edit but if you need to read significant amonamounts of Tables you will probably want to have Jaws in a virtual Machine handy. If you just have basic word processing needs then Text Edit, which comes free with the Mac is pretty powerful, much more powerful than WordPad for example. Also bean is a good free word-process. 6, this is a mac question in general, what programs did y'all use to run windows programs on your mac, did you all use boot camp or something else and what's the cheapesst/easiest? I am a fan of VM fusion, it is fast, completely accessible, and you can even install windows without sighted help. help I have a boot camp partition but never use it, I only use fusion as Windows is just a keystroke and a few seconds away on the Mac. With fusion you can have the best of both worlds. Although I have taken time to answer these questions it is probably better to ask one question at a time on the list. Hello David, i'd like to know how did you have configured vmware windows and jaws to avoid some problems with shorcuts? Some launches the dashboard or other mac things. running windows programs on mac
Hi all, It's me, Laurel and Stockard, with yet another question. Are there accessible programs out there that let you run windows based programs without actually installing windows on the mac? One that I saw was called cross over for mac. Has anybody tried this and if so, is it JAWS compatible? I wanna find a program that will let me run windows based programs and use OSS at the same time if I can. I would love to find a way to put JAWS screen reader on my mac if I can so that I could use it for some things. Is this possible? thanks for answering my windows questions, I appreciate it Laurel and Stockard --- Mac Access At Mac Access Dot Net --- To reply to this post, please address your message to mac-access@mac-access.net You can find an archive of all messages postedto the Mac-Access forum at either the list's own dedicated web archive: http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/pipermail/mac-access/index.html or at the public Mail Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/. RE: intro and switching from windows/jaws to mac/voice over
Answers to Questions . How expensive is fusion? Answer I paid about £65 but from time to time it appears on special offer especially if sold in a bundle with other apps. and is that what you all are calling a vm or virtual machine? Answer Yes If I were to buy something like fusion and use that, could I install jaws version 13 on my mac and use it using fusion? Answer Yes absolutely but Jaws would see this as a separate machine so it would use one of your activations. I know there's not a jaws for mac but it would be great if somehow I could get the best of both worlds, voice over and jaws on one computer. I have 64 bit jaws for windows for what it's worth Answer Absolutely - that is the beauty of the Mac. I personally think it is the best way to run Windows. . The last thing, for now, that I wanna know is where do you get fusion from? Crossover is not accessible. Parallels works, but isn't the best when it comes to accessibility, and from what I've been seeing, it's gotten worse with the latest few releases, so you might want to avoid that one too. VmFusion seems to work out of the box, and lets you run virtual instances of windows on your mac, so you can have osx and windows apps running side-by-side. Then, if you're strapped for cash, and just want something free, you can use bootcamp, and install windows in another partition on your hd, but for this option, you need to reboot your mac from osx into windows to use this option. I'm a little puzzled here. If you burned an audio cd from itunes, it should be playable on any regular cd player. If you just burned the audible files, (the onnes with the .aa extension) then they will play on any device you have registered with audible, (no idea if victor is one of those that can play audible content or not) so you shouldn't have any trouble playing the cds on any compatible device, depending on which method you used. --- Mac Access At Mac Access Dot Net --- To reply to this post, please address your message to mac-access@mac-access.net You can find an archive of all messages postedto the Mac-Access forum at either the list's own dedicated web archive: http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/pipermail/mac-access/index.html or at the public Mail Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/. iPhone and contact problems
Hi, I have an iPhone 4, and it is all up to date as far as the OS. I have a bunch of contacts I put in there over a year ago when I got the phone, but have not added any for a long time. Today I needed to add a new contact, and there is no add or edit available, and I am as far back as is possible, that is, I'm on the first level of the Contacts app, and in the phone app. So it shows my contacts in these two apps, and I can tap on the number and it calls them, and I have other options like ringtone and FaceTime, but there is no way to add anything. I called a coworker with an iPhone, and she had add and edit in the places where mine should be. So at this point, I seem to have no way to add a new contact, or even to edit one. Any ideas? Thanks. That's exactly what it's designed for, boot windows with the vm and jaws comes up like it was it's own system. It's sharing resourses with your Mac OS so it might not react exactly the same but it's pretty much windows on it'w own with a few tweaks here and there. -Original Message- From: mac-access-boun...@mac-access.net [mailto:mac-access-boun...@mac-access.net] On Behalf Of Laurel Sent: Tuesday, April 24, 2012 23:58 To: Mac OSX iOS Accessibility Subject: Re: running windows programs on mac Cool. RE: running windows programs on mac
What happens with fusion is that Windows becomes just another program on your Mac . So yes you can have Jaws and Kurzweil running within Fusion and then switch relatively instantly back to the Mac by just moving away from the Fusion Window. You can for example scan a document with Kurzweil save it, and then switch to the Mac to read it with, for example, Text Edit. Copying and pasting will also work. So you could scan with Kurzweil. Press control A to select all the scanned text, then control C to copy it. Now press control command and return to shift focus back to the Mac. Now you can open say Text Edit on the Mac and pressing command V will paste all the text you have copied from Kurzweil into Text Edit. The opposite is also true. I find that Nothing on Windows is as good as the Mac at reading PDF files. so you could read a PDF file on the Mac and then copy text from it into Microsoft Word running under Fusion . For me it really is a case of having the best of both worlds. In reality, for me, there are still some things that it is easier or cheaper to do under Windows where free software has a greater base. You can even put Windows programs on the Dock in the Mac. So you could have Kurzweil on your dock. Pressing return on Kurzweil will start Kurzweil in Windows . You can associate files on the Mac with windows programs if that is what you want. I do not do this but you could, for example, associate .doc files with the windows version of Word. So pressing command O to open the document in Mac finder will start Microsoft Word under fusion with the file already loaded. The aim of fusion is to make Windows instantly integrated into the Mac and does a pretty good job of this. There are some steps with sharing hardware which is not too difficult to follow . There are a couple of caveats . Make sure you have security software, anti virus firewall etc running under windows. Although the Mac is a much more stable and safe environment the Fusion version of Windows is just as vulnerable to viruses as normal windows. You can set up fusion not to share files with the Mac if you are really worried about thisbut I do not go that far. I d, for convenience have all my document folders available on both Mac and fusion. Because of this you may want to back up your windows once you have everything set up as you want it. . Doing this on the Mac is ridiculously easy. You just copy the virtual Machine file with command c in finder and paste it somewhere as a Backup, say on an external drive. You can also have time Machine on the Mac do this automatically for you but I prefer to keep at least one known stable version of Windows backed up separately from time machine. If you do get a virus in windows then just delete the infected virtual machine file on the Mac using command delete. Now simply copy back your backed up version into the Virtual Machine folder to return to normal within a couple of minutes of the file copying across. Goodbye to all the Windows virus hassles. Also if you intend to use Fusion a lot I recommend you get as much physical Ram as you can for your Mac. Do not use apple for this as third party providers are much much cheaper. If I used fusion, or boot camp, could I ever run JAWS on my mac, for example if I had to work with Kurzweil or microsoft or something that I can't really access as well with voice over? Parallels works, but isn't the best when it comes to accessibility, and from what I've been seeing, it's gotten worse with the latest few releases, so you might want to avoid that one too. VmFusion seems to work out of the box, and lets you run virtual instances of windows on your mac, so you can have osx and windows apps running side-by-side. Then, if you're strapped for cash, and just want something free, you can use bootcamp, and install windows in another partition on your hd, but for this option, you need to reboot your mac from osx into windows to use this option. So, there you go, hope this helps. RE: running windows programs on mac
I agree that you need to put in the effort to learn voiceover as it is a learning curve and it is silly just to get the Mac to simply run Windows. Whether you can simply drop Windows is another thing though. It depends on what you need to do. If you need only basic word-processing and are mainly interested in say music or audio file management then I agree that switching to the Mac completely and dropping windows is viable and probably desirable. If you want more advanced office functionality then it is a more difficult decision. Sadly reading tables in word docs is very difficult and clunky on the Mac. If you are reading lots of academic material, as I am, then you really have not got a choice. In addition some utilities are more difficult to find. I have never found a free powerful multiple file renamer with all the functions of say the Windows Bulk Renamer on the Mac side . I think you might have to write apple scripts to get some of the functions of Bulk Renamer but please let me know if there is something out there which I have not found. Also I would love a Mac version of Mp3Tag which is free and makes playlist and tag editing so quick and easy. If you need precise selection off web pages then on the Mac this is quite difficult. I have tried loads of techniques with limited results. Pressing Shift VO C to copy last phrase spoken is the easiest and most precise I can get to . I really wish you could copy on a web page like you could in Text Edit. Transferring every page to Text Edit is too time consuming . Also some pages are regrettably not accessible with Voiceover but are with Jaws. The opposite is true though as some pages voiceover sails through which Jaws struggles with. So my advice is explore and enjoy your Mac. I am still learning and I have not even explored say the Unix stuff under the bonnet yet. However I think it is misguided to deliberately create barriers on principle which exclude you from useful functioning. My preference is to do everything under the Mac but will go back to Windows if necessary. RE: for David (configuration of vmware fusion )
I agree with Sarah, just use your Windows CD to install a separate virtual machine with VM fusion. Personally I had nothing but problems with my boot camp partition and would not bother if I had to start from scratch. All sorts of problems with Bluetooth devices and getting windows to recognising wireless keyboards etc. None of this was a problem with Fusion. You can install windows this way without sighted assistance as VM fusion walks you through the setup process and this is all accessible with voiceover. Once your windows is installed you will have to use Narrator or something like NVDA to get you started with access there. Nisus Writer Pro is a good Word processor for the Mac but VO support for reading Tables is pretty
