advanced message handling with Mail.

2012-08-13 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Hi folks,

I'm starting to wonder if there might be a better, more comprehensive mail
client for Mac. I'm trying to do some fairly complex message organisation and
I'm not sure mail's up to it.

I'll use a trivial example for what I'm trying to do. I've created about 25
rules for the automatic sorting, replying and deletion of mails. However I'm
noticing that they don't, as it were, run in the background.

Let's assume I have a rule called deleteOld which deletes messages once they
are 366 days old. It works fine, but I have to remember periodically to hit
apply rules. I'd prefer if it happened automatically. Can this be done
using applescript, or a plugin?

There is also the issue of duplicate mail. Has anyone found a good utility for
scanning mail(s) and removing duplicates? One of my folder has 38,000 mails so
I'd rather not do this by hand! *smile*

All the best,

Dónal

Re: money reading app.

2012-08-13 Thread Geoff Waaler
Bare in mind however that it was written by the US government hence will only
identify US currency. Since the original poster is in the UK, this app may not
be ideal for his situation.

Also, its amusing to compare the LookTel product to the government's
counterpart head to head for anyone who wants an illustration of how
governments typically produce things with a tenth the quality at ten times the
price as the private sector. Sure the government product is free of charge,
except that it aint really free to produce. Instead subsequent generations
will have to pay for it, and I'm sure its development and distribution costs
far exceeded those of Looktel. And we want those people in complete control of
our health care too? But I digress.

Best regards.
Geoff

Dropbox under Lion

2012-08-13 Thread Chris

Hello all.
Under Lion, is the Dropbox client accessible? I have heard it is in
Mountain Lion, but what about just Lion? I must stress Lion as this
question is for Mr Price who will be shortly receiving a 13 inch Macbook
2008 model running Lion and therefore cannot be upgraded to Mountain Lion.

Please reply as soon as possible. Thanks!

Re: podcast downloading from BlindCoolTech.

2012-08-13 Thread Esther
Hello Arthur and Jim,

Unless things have changed, the key to being able to download podcasts from the
Blind Cool Tech web site is to make sure that after you have found the link to
the podcast you want, you first interact (VO-Shift-Down Arrow, or two finger
flick right if you're using TrackPad Commander). Then use either VO-Shift-M to
bring up the contextual menu or press Option-Return to force downloading. This
quirk of having to do an extra level of interaction with the link before you
can get the normal response to the context menu or the shortcut for forcing
download of the linked file is peculiar to the HTML coding of the Blind Cool
Tech web site.

The other way you get the file to download if it starts playing in your Safari
browser is to press Command-L to highlight the address in the address bar and
then press Option-Return. That should have the same effect as accessing the
link you would normally get after interacting. (I haven't tried this under
Safari 6, but this is a Mac OS X feature, and not dependent on VoiceOver).

If neither of the methods I've outlined works for you, you can always route
your mouse cursor to your VoiceOver cursor (VO-Commanf-F5), and use
Control-Click, where you press the Control key at the same time as you click
with your mouse or trackpad. This is the Mac equivalent of a right mouse
click to bring up the contextual menu.

This quirk of the Blind Cool Tech web page links has been around for years. I
personally avoid using the web page, go to their podcast feed instead:
http://www.blindcooltech.com/bct.xml

But that has only the last 40 episodes, I think. However, there's no need for
the extra interactions at the podcast feed site.

Just so you know the main Blind Cool Tech web site generates a lot of errors
when web validators are run on it.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: podcast downloading from BlindCoolTech.

2012-08-13 Thread Esther
Hi Arthur and Jim,

I want to amend a statement I made in my previous post about being able to
route your mouse cursor to your VoiceOver cursor and using Contol-click to
bring up the context menu if my previous instructions with the key advice of
first interacting on the link don't work for you. If those instructions don't
work, then routing your mouse cursor won't take you to the correct location to
Control-click. I just did some testing with VO-F5-F5 to check where the mouse
cursor is located in pixels on the screen before and after interacting with the
podcast link. If you don't interact with the link before you route your mouse
cursor to your VO cursor, you're centered on the position the link would have
if it occupied the full width of the web page -- not the actual x center of the
link. That's why nothing works if you don't first interact; the HTML coding on
the BCT web page is sending your screen reader to the wrong location. I can go
through every podcast link on the BCT web page, rou
te my mouse cursor to my VO cursor, and check the mouse cursor position with
VO-F5-F5, and they'll all have the same x positions in the middle of the
browser screen. I'll add that this is nowhere near the x pixel values for the
actual link, that you get if you first interact with the link before trying to
bring up a context menu, force download with Option-Return, or check the
position of the mouse cursor after routing mouse cursor to VoiceOver cursor.

Just wanted to provide information that this really is bad coding on BCT home
page as the source of your problems. Just keep doing extra interacting before
you try the regular commands.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: advanced message handling with Mail.

2012-08-13 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
I thought of that. Gather all mail in one folder and then delete. I want a
more automated solution though. thanks as ever. Ideally I'd like to be able
to fire rules on application startup which checks mailboxes (only some of my
mailboxes) for old messages. I'm just being lazy! :)

 Hi folks,

I'm starting to wonder if there might be a better, more comprehensive mail
client for Mac. I'm trying to do some fairly complex message organisation
and I'm not sure mail's up to it.

I'll use a trivial example for what I'm trying to do. I've created about 25
rules for the automatic sorting, replying and deletion of mails. However
I'm noticing that they don't, as it were, run in the background.

Let's assume I have a rule called deleteOld which deletes messages once
they are 366 days old. It works fine, but I have to remember periodically
to hit apply rules. I'd prefer if it happened automatically. Can this be
done using applescript, or a plugin?

There is also the issue of duplicate mail. Has anyone found a good utility
for scanning mail(s) and removing duplicates? One of my folder has 38,000
mails so I'd rather not do this by hand! *smile*

 All the best,

know. You will have to go back a few pages. I plan on adjusting that but right
now I don't have my computer as it's in the shop and medicines I'm taking are
making me feel not exactly ok in regards to even sitting at a computer but I
do plan on trying to adjust the pagenation so it looks better. also check

So What Constitutes A New iMac?

2012-08-13 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

So what's the actual definition of a new iMac machine?

As other list members will know I received what appears to be my new iMac
machine yesterday and its working well so no complaints there.

However I am curious due to the content of the system report available under
About This Mac in the Apple menu.

The System Report tells me that the model of iMac I have is a Mid 2011 model
and simple calculation will tell us that this goes back further than a year.

Okay, so I expect that time has to elapse between say manufacture, shipping,
stock in the warehouse and so on but just how much time elapses before
something is defined as not being new any more?

Perhaps I'm being trivial? Well I don't honestly know but I do know that I was
a little surprised when I saw the date on the system report.

The hard disk shows that the operating system was originally installed on 7
July 2011.

Again I stress that perhaps I'm bing trivial, after all! the machine has all
the specs I read about on the Apple Web site before purchase, it came clean and
packed well and is working right now but I am wondering whether it would be
worth to perhaps get some cash back or at least some sort of credit or
compensation given the age of the machine?
