Re: macbook air cannon 3 in one printer

2012-08-22 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Douglas,

Preview scans images, it does not perform OCR. For this, you need an OCR
application such as ABBYY FineReader Express which you can get from the Mac
Appstore. There is no free OCR solution for the Mac.

Adobe Reader, as far as I know, is not accessible with VO.

Unless an app comes with its own uninstaller, you remove an app by going to the
Applications folder (Command-Shift-a), locating the app and pressing
Command-Delete. Then empty the trash.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Audio interfaces that work with VORe: audio book builder

2012-08-22 Thread Danny Noonan
I have a saffire pro14 which is a wonderful unit. It's rock solid, is fireWire
has 2 wonderful mike preamps and as many in & outs as anyone could ever want
for a basic home recording situation. It has very low latency and on and on but
the draw back is, the software mixer tool to reallocate inputs outputs etc is
virtually inaccessible. If you have eyes to help you set up configurations, you
can save them and are able to load them with out problem but choosing what
things are set to out of the box is nil. It's set up with 1 instrument level
and 1 mike input which is what I want but I also have daughters who can see and
can help at a pinch. If the box had hardware controls for changing input 1 & 2
from instrument to mike like it's big brothers do, it would be the perfect
device for me.

On the front you have independent volumes for both inputs, a fantom power
button, volume for the headphone and a monitor knob as well but the device is
so configurable, you can virtually set any input or output to where ever you
want.

I wish I had such a good I/O box with VO friendly configuration but have what I
have. On the positive though, it never gives me problems, is always right in
sink with GarageBand and has imo some of the best sounding mike preamps on the
market.

You can find information at the blow link. Be aware though, it isn't the
cheapest option but definitely a quality one.

I've gotten that line before as well. I would also like to know what that
means. As I could not copy this to the clip board as i was in recovery mode. My
mac has not crashed but I have gotten this line even after a clean install and
wiping the drive.

Strange crashing of Mountain Lion

2012-08-22 Thread Danny Noonan
I've had a couple of strange crashes that have required a hard shut down with
the power button. On some great advice, I've repaired disk permissions but it's
taking a lot longer than it used too and I get the following line and I'm not
sure if it's supposed to be like that. I have a nagging feeling I may have a
virus but knowing how rare they are on OS10, thought I'd ask wiser minds than
mine. The last crash, my external keyboard stopped working and key combinations
on the mbp keyboard went finn. VO started stuttering and repeated sounds
endlessly as if someone had sat on a blue tooth keyboard but I checked and mine
wasn't causing problems.

Repairing permissions for “Mac HD”
Warning: SUID file
“System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent”
has been modified and will not be repaired.

Permissions repair complete

I'm sure all is fine but thanks for any reassurance.

Audio interfaces that work with VORe: audio book builder

2012-08-22 Thread Phil Halton
I'm looking for something simple in an audio interface for the iMac. , maybe
two mic preamps , usb or firewire, Just something to run a mic or two and a
couple of line sources into garageBand. I'm new to the mac and don't want to
mess around with anything that's going to give me accessibility fits.

Any suggestions for low-end, reliable USB or Firewire audio interfaces for
VoiceOver users?

Thanks - phil

RE: Separating system audio and Voice Over

2012-08-22 Thread Adrian Beech
G'day Sarah,

Alas looks like I needed to attach another audio device. The available
options under both System Prefs / Sound and Utilities / Voice Over showed
only the built in device. This made no difference even when pluggin in the
digital optical cable to the 3.5mm jack on the back of the Mini -- the audio
output would divert from the internal speaker with no additional option to
choose.

My intention was to have Voice Over through the internal speaker and other
audio through the builtin 3.5mm jack on the back of the unit. Either I've
missed something in attempting to set this up or it's simply not possible.

BTW, adding a USB Yamaha NX2 though worked

Cheers.

Re: audio book builder

2012-08-22 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hi William,
I use Audio Book Binder a lot to turn books from www.calibre.org into a more
convenient format. Each Calibre book is a set of MP3 files with names like
007213-001.mp3, 007213-002.mp3, ... 007213-121.mp3. I select all these files
and add them to the table in audio book binder. I then enter the book title and
author. I then select all the entries in the table and go to the menu bar and
select split file and then renumber chapters. that results in a single chapter
for each of the above Calibre files each of which lasts for about 10 minutes. I
then press make audio book.
I finally open the new audio book in iTunes and sync with my iPod Nano G6. This
all works fine and there seem to be no disadvantages with the above short
chapters or the lack of a part 1 and part 2 as in audible books.
Hope this helps

OH definitely I agree. and in the poster's case maybe convince one of the app
debs to change the name of the app once it is installed. *smiles*

The 2 finger double tap jester is def the way to do it as I would label voice
memos for my sake that way. lol!

Good luck.

Re: Can I rename an iPhone App?

2012-08-22 Thread Esther
Hello Paul, Sarah, and Others,

The ability to add labels for VoiceOver was a feature that was added to iOS 5.
You can check the AxS Lab link summarizing current iOS VoiceOver Gesture,
Braille, and Keyboard Shortcuts for the equivalent commands to add labels using
a keyboard and Braille:
http://axslab.com/ios-shortcuts
(I don't think I've relabeled anything except by using the two finger double
tap and hold gesture, but the equivalent commands for keyboard and Braille
exist.)

I think that some labels just don't stick when the same buttons come up in
multiple contexts (think this happened in AroundMe, for example). It's as
though the reference to control loads up with the default label when used, and
as long as it's always used in the same context, your new label continues to
work, but if it's brought up again as part of a general screen refresh, then
the new defaults get loaded.

In general, you can label or relabel anything, so you can replace button icon
labels like "gear" with something more meaningful like "settings", and strip
out extraneous announcements like number prefixes and repeat "buttons". Again,
while this is a nice feature, it's still worthwhile to get the developer to fix
the labels, because this is only a temporary and individual customization.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Did you delta the trash folder from your favorites bar? That is the only cause
I could think of.

Hi Jim.

Have you unhidden the Mailboxes, with Command Shift M?
Not sure what else you could try.
Unless there is something in the View Menu to Display other Mailboxes.
Hope this helps.

Apple Mail Problem.

2012-08-22 Thread Jim Noseworthy
Hi Gang:

I must be having a senior's moment here. On one of my computers, I can open
the trash mailbox with Command-5 but on the other computer, my
command-choices only go as far as command-4.

How do I resolve this problem?

Thanks all over the place gang.

Hi Sarah and Esther,
Many thanks for the info on how to change the VoiceOver label for an iPhone App
so that I can distinguish between two apps with the same filename. That worked
fine. Can you do the same trick to label unlabelled buttons in an iPhone App?
Best wishes
