go to accounts in prefs and then go to the table. If that's not what you
mean expand the inbox view and you will see the inboxes of all of your
accounts.

2012-09-11 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
I'm playing with the apps as we speak. The DVD ones are worth the purchase
price alone in my view, they're superb.

 Hi All,

Metakine, the makers of DVDRemaster Pro, have put together a mini-bundle
sale as today's MacUpdate Promo. They're selling 10 apps, including
DVDRemaster Pro and Mac DVD Ripper, for a price of $39.99. The apps are:

DVDRemaster Pro (which is now sold in the Mac App Store as DVD Remaster 8
 for $49.99)
Mac DVD Ripper Pro (normally $19.95, includes the Fairmount decryption
 program)
 Hands Off!
Aurora ($14.99 in the Mac App Store for Aurora Lite)
Back In Focus ($99.99 in the Mac App Store)
Decompose ($29.99 in the Mac App Store)
 Magic Launch
Video Rotate ($2.99 in the Mac App Store)
 Processes
Photo Batch ($14.99 in the Mac App Store)

I think this is worth purchasing just for the combined price of
DVDRemaster Pro and Mac DVD Ripper Pro alone, if you want to accessibly
rip DVDs into formats suited for Apple TV or iOS devices, just extract
audio tracks, or reformat them. Of the other programs, I think Aurora is
accessible (it's a wake-up program that lets you wake up to an iTunes
playlist instead of an alarm), and Processes and Hands Off! might be.
(Processes lets you zap stalled processes, pause apps and processes that
are slowing down your system and resume them later, and also monitor
processes' system usage and network connections and files. Hands Off!
monitors the way your applications access your network and disks, in case
they send out data.) Many of the others are video or photo processing
programs, but Back in Focus might be usable or useful. (It seems like a
way or automatically de-blurring photos you take).

This offer is good for the next 15+ hours. Purchasing MacUpdate promos
requires that you create an account, and that involves a one-time
negotiation of a CAPTCHA. After that, all purchase transactions and
accessing the apps should be completely accessible. You can log in to
your account, and view a record of past purchases and software licenses,
and re-download the apps. You can also designate that the license for a
particular app in a bundle purchase be issued for someone else -- this
lets you gift a friend with a license if you've already purchased an
application in a software bundle. It also lets you decide to share
bundles with someone else by splitting the price and dividing up the apps.
The person you designate to receive the license does not need to have a
MacUpdate login -- you just need to give a valid email and name for the
license. (However, they also won't have a permanent record of the license
code and purchase details that are associated with an account
>>> .)

For new users, Gordon (who runs this list) worked with the developer of
DVD Remaster Pro to ensure VoiceOver accessiblity with this app. There is
a freeware alternative, Handbrake, but DVDRemaster Pro will process in
about a third the time, and also has other convenient features that
simplify separate audio track extraction, compression from dual-layer
 DVDs, etc.

 HTH. Cheers,

Correction: Metakine Bundle sale period extended[was Re: Metakine mini-bundle one-day sale of DVDRemaster Pro, Mac DVD Ripper Pro, and 8other apps for $39.99]

2012-09-11 Thread Esther
Hi Dónal,

Yes, I think you're correct that the deal is available for another 5 days and
3+ hours. I found that when I went to the web page before reading your note.
I thought I read and checked the time remaining from the counter on that web
page before my original post, but when I visit it now, it does say that the
deal is available for 5 more days. There was nothing obvious on the metakine
site about this promotion, and the default mupromo is usually for 1 day, or 1
weekend, so maybe they updated the original counter?

In any case, this gives people time to check out which apps are accessible, or
to decide if they want to split purchases. Thanks for catching this.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: Problem Downloading Mountain Lion

2012-09-11 Thread Desi Noller
Hi Sarah,

Thanks so much for your help! Mountain Lion wasn't in my applications folder
that I could see, but that's probably because the download had most of the way
to go still. It's there now that it had the chance to finish. Definitely a
good way to check things out though!

Re: Problem Downloading Mountain Lion

2012-09-11 Thread Desi Noller
Hi Esther,

I had actually looked at my purchased items last night, but had failed to
notice that my download had somehow gotten paused. When I pressed the resume
button, everything woked like a charm! Your advice is what encouraged me to go
back there and look more carefully! And, I'm definitely saving your message
because I know it will be helpful to me in the future! Take care, and thanks
for making my day!

funny thing, When I clicked on a video of mine from the mobile site, it got
an error and wouldn't play, but played fine from the regular youtube site.
go figure.

The mobile site looks great for managing account settings and videos though.

Re: ipad has stopped connecting to my wifi network.

2012-09-11 Thread Esther
Hi Dónal,

This is not a permanent fix, but what happens if you change the assignment from
DHCP to a static IP address? If you go to Settings > Wi-Fi and then flick
right to the "more info" button for you selected network and double tap, you
can read the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS, and Search Domains under the
DHCP tab. You can switch the selected tab from "DHCP" to "Static" by double
tapping, and then you can enter values in all the same fields, including a
valid IP address.

I'm not sure what you mean about your iPad getting a self-assigned IP -- do you
meant that this is not a valid IP address even though the address seems legal?
(On my Airport Express the addresses are 10.etc.) Can you manually switch to
the IP address of one of your other connected devices (which you take off of
that address) and have your iPad connection work?

The only Wi-Fi router related iOS connection problem I've had was time-outs
dropping the connection on my first device (iPod Touch in early 2010), an that
only happened when I was on a WPA encrypted network and near the edge of
coverage. That was because the energy saving settings on the device would drop
the connection if there wasn't a fast enough response from the Wi-Fi network to
indicate this was currently in use. So unless there was continuous network
use, the connection would periodically just drop. If I streamed a low bit-rate
radio station in the background with ooTunes that was enough to keep the
network connection up (under the default DHCP setting for my encrypted home
network), and then later I found that if I switched the IP settings to static
and copied in the address from the DHCP assignment, that would also keep the
connection up without having to stream anything in the background. What was
weird was that this only happened on this one network with WPA encryption and
when I was farther from the router; it wouldn't happen on any open Wi-FI
network, or ones that were WEP encrypted. Eventually, there was an iOS update
that fixed this, and I didn't have to use the static IP address. Changing the
DNS lookup address didn't help in this case, although that work for some people.

I assume you're only having this connection problem with your home Wi-Fi
network, and your iPad can connect elsewhere?

Cheers,

Esther

Re: accessible blogging software?

2012-09-11 Thread Sarah Alawami
No that's correct. and the dev is wonderful to work with. It's well worth the
40 dollars I paid for it. For those that use dropel, I dunno if it works with
that but it works with blog spot,, live journal, for those of us that still use
it, wordpress and many other platforms.

Re: Problem Downloading Mountain Lion

2012-09-11 Thread Esther
Hi Desi,

Can you check in the Mac App Store under "Purchases" about the status of your
Mountain Lion purchase? If you navigate to the toolbar and VO-Space to select
"Purchases" and use VO-Space to select it, what happens when you check the
entry for "Mountain Lion" on that page? (For example, if you use item chooser
menu to find "Mountain Lion" and navigate to its entry in the table of
purchases, then right arrow or VO-right arrow across the columns, does the
fifth column get announced as "Download","Install", or "Installed"?)

Cheers,

Esther

Re: Gentle Reminder, Cross-Posting To This Group

2012-09-11 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi All

In the light of at least one recent post, this is another of those occasions
where it seems that another friendly and gentle reminder is in order. Although
I do agree that the topics could generate valuable discussion, it is very very
important that people refrain from cross-posting. Again, this is specifically
addressed in the list policy document.

The reasons for this are pretty obvious really. We need to retain our unique
identity for one thing. If people see the same traffic on two or more of the
lists that they are subscribed too, they simply leave one of them. Sadly, it
seems to be the case that they opt to leave Mac Access in the first instance.
We've lost a number of members because of this practice, a trend which we
really wouldn't like to see continued. We do not have any desire to be seen as
merely an extension of other groups, however well-meaning and good-intentioned
the cross-poster may be. Please keep in mind that a lot of work, not to
mention a lot of money has ben invested in the upkeep of this group by Lynne
and myself. We believe we are providing a valuable community service and we
want to continue to do that.

Also, there is another very good reason for not cross-posting. And that is a
matter of respecting the original author of a post or article. We take the
view that, if a person wishes there content to be posted on our list, they will
join it.

For your reference, here's what we say in the list policy document about
cross-posting:

Note: With reference to cross-posting, there are a small number of exceptions;
and at least one, specifically, the first of these exceptions must apply:

• You have communicated directly with, and obtained the consent
of, the list owners in advance
• You are promoting an upcoming event which has a direct
significance to one or more of Apple's platforms, websites or events
• Your intention is to generate fresh interest in the Mac
Access Dot Net project; in which case, please accept our thanks

Again, you can always find the list policy document here:
.

I hate having to post these messages, and the very last thing I want to do is
to be seen as coming down heavy. But we are placed in a difficult situation
when a member unsubscribes and when we request politely to know the reason for
their decision, we are told that they see the same traffic elsewhere. It's
really rather discouraging to be honest.

So please people, refrain from cross-posting, if you wouldn't mind. Unless, of
course, your cross-post comes within the boundaries of the above described.
Again, thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Gordon

Problem Downloading Mountain Lion

2012-09-11 Thread Desi Noller
Hi Everybody,

Last night I finally decided to take the plunge and upgrade my iMac to Mountain
Lion from Lion. I went to the Mac App store, and after signing into my
account, and updating my account info to reflect our recent move, I made my
purchase. When I tried to invoke the "download" link, I got a "download link
pressed" message, but nothing appeared to happen, and Mountain Lion doesn't
seem to be on my system. I checked both the "downloads" folder and "about this
Mac" through the Apple system menu, but no evidence of Mountain Lion on my
system is to be found! I ended up trying twice last night before I finally
decided to throw in the towel! In case there's a chance that it did somehnow
download, I don't want to try again! I sure don't need three copies! For now
I'm at a loss to know what next step to take. Any ideas out there for me? I
know that I am not even close to being the geekiest person in the world, but I
am beginning to feel an extreme lack of confidence when it com
es to my technological abilities! I start shuddering every time I hear
something new is coming out! Everything that seems to be easy for everyone
else to get and use, always seems to present me with some weird situation!
So, thanks to much for any help you can send my way!

1. go to prefs.

2. go to accounts int he tool bar.

3. go to the table and interact.

4. press vo shift cmd space on the account you want at your default. if it
is at the bottom. don't forget to rout your mouse to it before you do cmd vo
shift space.

5. vo left arrow until you get to the top of the list and do a vo shift cmd
space to release the account and it should be at the top.

I can't get this to work all the time but this is the only way I know how to
do it. If there is another way I'd love to know.

Re: have some questions about installing windows with VMWare Fusion

2012-09-11 Thread Gordon Smith
This is a grey area, but anything Windows is off topic for this group. Discuss
the configuration of the virtual machine, on the Mac side only, and I can't
stress that enough! Windows requirements are off topic.

Please don't think we are being difficult. This is long-standing list
protocol, made very fear in the list policy document which everybody was sent
upon subscribing and to which I am once again posting a URL for below. But
here is the relevant text from the list policy document for your reference:

On Mac Access, although perhaps the name may suggest that only Mac OS is up for
discussion, you may discourse upon anything and everything related to the Apple
Mac OSX and iOS software range, as well as Apple and third-party hardware and
software, with specific emphasis on, although not necessarily restricted to,
accessibility issues. There is one important exception here. The discussion of
Apple software products designed for use under Microsoft Windows is explicitly
prohibited; as is any other application designed for Microsoft Windows or any
other non-Apple environment, even if it does involve Apple's hardware or
software platforms. There has to be a cut-off point and the reason it has been
defined thus is because there are already many alternative forums, (including
our sister groupTechno Chat; part of the Techno Chat Dot Net Technology Network
where this discussion is already covered in extensio.

Please refrain from asking questions regarding Windows. This is a Mac and iOS
group and we need to strictly observe list policy. I'm sorry if this message
causes you any disquiet and, even more so, offence. Believe me that was and is
not my intention. I urge everybody who didn't bother to read the policy
document in the welcome package which was sent to you when you joined the list,
to do so by using the below URL:

it will save a lot of misunderstanding later.

Once again, to be clear. If you want to discuss the configuration of your VM
on the Mac side, i.e., how you have VMWare Fusion configured, that is fine.
But once you get into the virtual machine and start dealing with Windows, that
is most definitely off topic.

You can find the full policy document here:

Please do not consider this a reprimand, it is merely a reminder to all who may
be in similar situations.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Gordon

Is the process of installing windows fully accessible with Voiceover? I have

utility, "Sharp Keys" would serve me, but is there anything better? A third

really appreciate it.

Many Thanks

it like i did for a long time lol! but basically

cmd n for new message, tab through the fields and fill them out

cmd shift d to send.

Be blessed.

2012-09-11 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi Esther

As always, you are a veritable mine of information. Thank you for pointing me
to this. I had a hunch I'd heard of it before but couldn't remember where, or
when.

No harm would be done by trying this, so I've just installed it.

Many thanks again.

I'll paste in the relevant text from my post of last November:

Re: SuperDuper scheduling

2012-09-11 Thread Phil Halton
Thanks John, I found this out by experimentation and set up my schedules
exactly as you stated. Its hard to remember sometimes that VO commands are
not all one can use - regular system commands and keys should also be tried.

Hello Phil:

I am only going to talk about scheduling backups.

When you create a schedule instead of using the VO keys all you have to do
is the tab and space bar. For checking which week of the month, tab over
and hit the space bar. I tab then shift tab making sure I made my desired
selection.

Same holds true for each day of the week.

The only time I need to interact is when setting the time.

Take care,

John

Hi Phil

The easiest way is to simply interact, no need for mouse clicks.

On 10 Sep 2012, at 16:10, Phil Halton wrote:

I registered SuperDuper today and have a few questions please concerning
scheduling.

first of all, As I navigate the scheduling window with cursor tracking
on and the mouse set to follow VO, each checkbox reports being checked,
and pressing VO space to uncheck causes the default button to be clicked
(it does not uncheck the checkbox). It seems that dragging the mouse
along automatically checks any box it lands on. So, I found I have to
navigate to the desired box, then turn cursor tracking off before moving
away from the checkbox - seems kind of klunky but it works.

But My big question is this:

If I want to have several bootable clones going back two or three weeks
is it necessary to have two or three partitions, one each for each
boottable clone?
Basically, I want to implement the strategy wherein I can go back
several weeks to a clean system in the case that one or more saved
backups is corrupted, or contains the same problem I would be trying to
recover from.

I have a 2TB firewire 800 external HD, and its empty, so I can
re-partition it as much as I like. With my limited understanding of
SuperDuper, I was considering making 4 small partitions one each for a
scheduled bootable clone, but that doesn't sound right either.

I'd be glad for any backup strategy ideas, concrete or otherwise, that
you care to offer.

Downloading Apps for iOS [was Re: FileApp Pro downloading app]

2012-09-11 Thread Esther
Hi Gordon and Others,

I drafted this earlier (when FileApp Pro was still free), but didn't have a
chance to send this off.

Yes, FileApp Pro is pretty accessible, but if you're asking for a
recommendation of which app I would personally use, I'd opt for Filer:
• Filer ($3.99) by Dan Leehr L.L.C.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/filer/id318884764?mt=8
There's a free Lite version of Filer you can try, but you're limited to storing
7 files in the app:
• Filer Lite (free) by Dan Leehr L.L.C.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/filer-lite/id350939597?mt=8

Filer uses persistent storage, which means that if I'm playing an mp3 file of a
podcast or a movie's described audio track that is uploaded to Filer, it will
resume from where I last left off, even if I've switched apps between returning
to listen. If I'm reading a document in .rtf or pdf format, there's a slider at
the right side of the screen I can touch, and then swipe up or down (or double
tap and hold, then drag up or down to a position) to quickly navigate. That's
a feature that isn't in FileApp, and is handy to have, although FileApp and
FileApp Pro will remember which page you're on in .RTF and Word document files.

There's an extensive help guide for Filer that loads under "Files" (the third
of five tabs at the bottom of the screen -- just above the home button). This
explains the various options for using Filer.

I've also been told, by someone whose judgement I trust, that the Downloads -
Downloader & Download Manager app appears to have better memory management for
large files than Filer under iOS 5. Also, his statement was that there are
certain download sites that Safari on iOS won't now download from, such as
Sendspace, and that Filer will show the same behavior as Safari. (I don't do
enough downloading from such sources to be able to tell whether this is true;
in general, if there is an issue with downloading with Filer, I've been able to
use the Atomic Web Browser app.)

So for completeness, here are the links to the Downloads app in the regular and
lite versions. As in the case of Filer, the lite version of the app is free,
but limits you in the number of files that can be stored. There are separate
versions of Downloads (and Downloads Lite) for the iPhone and iPad.
• Downloads - Downloader & Download Manger ($1.99) by Hian Zin Jong
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/downloads-downloader-download/id343307433?mt=8
• Downloads Lite - Downloader & Download Manger (free) by Hian Zin Jong
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/downloads-lite-downloader/id349275540?mt=8

And for the iPad:
• Downloads for iPad - Download Manager ($2.99) by Hian Zin Jong
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/downloads-for-ipad-download/id380641055?mt=8
• Downloads Lite for iPad - Download Manager (free) by Hian Zin Jong
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/downloads-lite-for-ipad-download/id383846063?mt=8

You can use these kinds of apps for many purposes, such as WiFi transfer
between your iOS device and your computer, transferring file content such as
eBooks to other apps on your device, handling compressed file formats, and
directly reading/playing files within the app or accessing your Dropbox files.
If you read word documents or .rtf files Filer and FileApp will remember the
page you're on. This doesn't work for text files, though.

I'd summarize by saying that FileApp Pro was worth getting as a free app that
is mostly accessible, especially if you don't know whether you want or need
downloading features, or resuming position when reading word or .rtf documents.
However, I think that if you do decide you want these functions, and want to
purchase an app for this, Filer (or possibly, Downloads) is a better choice,
because I find it overall a better app, with generally better accessibility and
features like the slider at the right side of the screen for positioning within
documents. All of these apps have free versions (FileApp, Filer Lite, and
Downloads Lite) that let you explore the interface.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

2012-09-11 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Hi all,

This is one for the networking gurus on list. I'm no expert in this so I'm
baffled.

My wifi connectivity is handled by an Airport extreme. Most devices on the
network are connecting fine, except an iPad II which seems to connect, but is
getting a self-assigned IP (169.etc)). I've tried forgetting the network,
resetting all network preferences, restarting the router but all to no avail.
Anyone any thoughts.

Hi Dónal,

I have the paid membership to MacUpdate Desktop, because that was part of a
promotional price option in one of their bundles. It's set to expire near the
end of September. I'm not sure that I use all the features, though. It
basically helps track all the apps you have and inform you of updates. Nice,
but not necessary.

Cheers,

Re: Metakine mini-bundle one-day sale of DVDRemaster Pro, Mac DVD Ripper Pro, and 8other apps for $39.99

2012-09-11 Thread Esther
Sorry, I failed to give the web page for the MU Promo. Here's the link to the
MacUpdate Promo for the Metakine Mini-Bundle:
http://www.mupromo.com/deal/13254/12336/macupdate-bundle

Metakine usually makes available fully functional trial downloads of their
products, so you can visit their product web page if you want to try any apps
before purchasing:

Cheers,

Esther

Esther just out of curiosity do you have the paid or free membership? I've
been tempted to upgrade but am not sure if it's worth it.

Metakine mini-bundle one-day sale of DVDRemaster Pro, Mac DVD Ripper Pro, and 8other apps for $39.99

2012-09-11 Thread Esther
Hi All,

Metakine, the makers of DVDRemaster Pro, have put together a mini-bundle sale
as today's MacUpdate Promo. They're selling 10 apps, including DVDRemaster Pro
and Mac DVD Ripper, for a price of $39.99. The apps are:

DVDRemaster Pro (which is now sold in the Mac App Store as DVD Remaster 8 for
$49.99)
Mac DVD Ripper Pro (normally $19.95, includes the Fairmount decryption program)

I think this is worth purchasing just for the combined price of DVDRemaster Pro
and Mac DVD Ripper Pro alone, if you want to accessibly rip DVDs into formats
suited for Apple TV or iOS devices, just extract audio tracks, or reformat
them. Of the other programs, I think Aurora is accessible (it's a wake-up
program that lets you wake up to an iTunes playlist instead of an alarm), and
Processes and Hands Off! might be. (Processes lets you zap stalled processes,
pause apps and processes that are slowing down your system and resume them
later, and also monitor processes' system usage and network connections and
files. Hands Off! monitors the way your applications access your network and
disks, in case they send out data.) Many of the others are video or photo
processing programs, but Back in Focus might be usable or useful. (It seems
like a way or automatically de-blurring photos you take).

This offer is good for the next 15+ hours. Purchasing MacUpdate promos
requires that you create an account, and that involves a one-time negotiation
of a CAPTCHA. After that, all purchase transactions and accessing the apps
should be completely accessible. You can log in to your account, and view a
record of past purchases and software licenses, and re-download the apps. You
can also designate that the license for a particular app in a bundle purchase
be issued for someone else -- this lets you gift a friend with a license if
you've already purchased an application in a software bundle. It also lets you
decide to share bundles with someone else by splitting the price and dividing
up the apps. The person you designate to receive the license does not need to
have a MacUpdate login -- you just need to give a valid email and name for the
license. (However, they also won't have a permanent record of the license code
and purchase details that are associated with an account.)

For new users, Gordon (who runs this list) worked with the developer of DVD
Remaster Pro to ensure VoiceOver accessiblity with this app. There is a
freeware alternative, Handbrake, but DVDRemaster Pro will process in about a
third the time, and also has other convenient features that simplify separate
audio track extraction, compression from dual-layer DVDs, etc.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
