From the finder press shit-command-u to open the Utilities folder.
Interact with the table and press command-o on Disk Utility.

Re: accessible ftp client

2012-11-05 Thread Esther
Hi Amy,

If you only have occasional need for FTP, and the primary requirement is free,
you can try Cyberduck, but get it from the MacUpdate site instead of the Mac
App Store. Otherwise, Transmit is the application of choice, and well worth
the $34 for the range of capabilities and speed. (Cyberduck is $24 through the
Mac App Store.) It's also possible to use the built-in support for FTP via
the Terminal command line. Here's the link to the MacUpdate site for Cyberduck:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/8392/cyberduck

This was traditionally free, but they recently moved to a paid model in order
to keep up with development costs. I believe that the free version from
MacUpdate still works, but I don't use this myself.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: iTunes Question.

2012-11-05 Thread Esther
Hi Ian,

Is this an inadvertent repeat of Jim's question? Sarah suggests
VO-Command--Shift-T to get back to the sources list for everywhere but the
iTunes Store. I use Command-Option-F to move to the search text field, and
then VO-Right arrow, or Right arrow (with QuickNav on), or tab to move to the
source list, and this works even if you are in the iTunes Store. It even works
on old versions of the Mac OS X with old versions of iTunes. If, for some
reason, this takes you to a button instead of the source list, use VO-Space and
the source list should be there. What's happening in that case is the window
for the iTunes Store is expanding to take up the space normally occupied by the
source list and the other sidebar items. If the button says something like
"Previous iTunes Store page, dimmed", navigate again with VO-Right arrow or
Right arrow and VO-Space on the "Next iTunes Store page" button, then either
VO-Left arrow or try the Command-Option-F and VO-Right arrow, or Right arr
 ow, or tab again.

(This rarely happens to me, but I'm trying to cover every possible way to get
the source list back, in case you're having problems that you haven't
mentioned.) Command-Option-F to move to the search text field does not depend
on VoiceOver, neither does pressing tab to move to the next location. This was
about the first command we were able to get working when they first started
making iTunes accessible.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

take you some ware else in another app. I've never liked that but there you go.

Re: Scanning/OCR question.

2012-11-05 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Jim,

If all your scanning is done in English, then the Docuscan solution would
probably be the easiest to use, but not the cheapest.

Many people use ABBYY FineReader Express which handles quite a few languages,
including up to three in the same document.

If you need a scanning solution for an iDevice, then Prizmo seems to get most
people's votes. I certainly use it successfully and, once again, it handles
quite a few different languages.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi Gang:

Thanks for your recommendations. I thought of DocuScan but I would like a
stand-alone solution. I might try the ABBY fine reader software.

Again, thanks all over the place.

Re: Can you run a Mac Mini without a moniter?

2012-11-05 Thread Esther
Hello Kristeen,

For current generation Mac Minis, I believe the only way to run your Mac
without a monitor (and not get the constant "busy" messages when using the web
browser, iTunes, or other such applications), is to use a connector to your
device that simulates a hook-up with an external TV. You can purchase such a
VGA-to-NTSC connector from Sewell Direct:
http://sewelldirect.com/pc-to-tv.asp

This connects onto another Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter that you buy
separately from Apple. I think these adaptors are about $30 each, so if you
want the portability, it's possible to get the Mini to perform without a
monitor attached. Take a look at John Panarese's article, "Adventures with My
Mac Mini" at his MacForTheBlind site:
http://macfortheblind.com/?p=591
(I just do a Google search on "mac4theblind Mac mini" to find the page.)
John's article has links to the components you need, although I've copied the
link to the key connector above. If you have the very latest Mini, you should
check with Apple that the Thunderbolt port supports an attachment to the Mini
DisplayPort to VGA adapter, although their product web page claims
compatibility.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Scanning/OCR question.

2012-11-05 Thread Esther
Hi Jim,

Dónal posted that there was a MacUpdate promo on ABBYY FIne Reader Express a
week ago. In keeping with the policy following many (but not all) mupromos,
you can still purchase this application at 25% discount ($74.99) for the next
7 days, although the 50% discount was only good last Monday:
http://www.mupromo.com/deal/13410/abbyy-finereader-express

I'm a bit confused about whether the free trial demo of this program has been
updated to the latest version, 8.3, for Lion. The information on the trial
download site for ABBYY FineReader Express appears to state that this is good
for Mac OS X through 10.7, but the numerous comments on the macupdate web page
state that users who tested the trial all had to update their versions at the
ABBYY web site before they could apply their serial numbers following purchase.
The developer claims you have to uninstall the 15-day trial version, then load
the new version for 8.3 from the following URL in order for the serial numbers
to work:

http://www.abbyydownloads.com/FRMACLion/ABBYY_FineReader_Express.dmg

Of course, you could just go to the Mac App Store and pay the $99.99 for ABBYY
FineReader Express, and not worry about the discount. Purchases of MacUpdate
promos do require you to create an account, and that requires a one-time
negotiation of a CAPTCHA.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi. I am going to be unsubscribeing from this list, because it is
too high traffic. There are too many emails. If you would like to
contact me about the email I sent out to this list a few days ago
about my braille keyboard app, please contact me off list. My
email address is jessicabrown...@gmail.com. Thank you. Incase you
did not get that email, here it is again. Hello. My name is
Jessica. I am 17 years old and I live in Canada in the province
of BC. I am blind and I have an iPhone 4s running iOS 6. I use
VoiceOver. I am wondering if you could develop some apps for me
and other people who are blind or visually impaired and who use
Apple products? If you can not, then do you know someone who can?
If you know someone who may be able to develop some or all of
these apps, please forward this email to them and ask them to
send their response to jessicabrown...@gmail.com or just tell me
who they are and tell me their email address so I can send them a
copy of this email. Thank you. The first app would look something
like this. It would be an additional keyboard for typing braille
on iPhones, iPads and iPods. It would be like the Emoji keyboard
app from Awesomest Inc that we can get on the app store. It would
also be like the other language keyboards that come built in to
iOS and that we can enable in settings. It would be able to be
directly integrated in to and used with all apps including the
apps that are built in to iOS and the apps we get from the app
store. Not like the TypeInBraille app from EveryWare
Technologies, because I have read the instructions and I have
tried over and over again and I can not even type 1 letter with
that app. I think part of the problem with the EveryWare
Technologies app is that it is not laid out the way a normal
braille keyboard is and we can not input letters in the same way
we would on a normal braille keyboard. Also, we do not get any
auditory feedback as to what letter we are typing except beeps.
Beeps do not tell us what we are typing or what we are about to
type. All the beeps sound the same no matter what dot we are
typing in. In other words, we can not tell what dot we have
entered just by listening to the beeps. These apps are going to
be way different. If possible, these apps would work with touch
typing and standard typing. Also, I have seen some apps like
Fleksy by Syntellia that we need to turn off VoiceOver to use. If
it is possible, these apps would be compatible with VoiceOver so
we would not have to turn off VoiceOver to use them. If you can
not make them compatible with VoiceOver, then if possible, they
would have their own speech system built in to them. Regardless
of if the apps used VoiceOver or their own speech system, they
would tell us what dot combination our fingers are on when we are
feeling around the screen, and then when we lift our fingers to
type the character they would say it again to confirm what we had
typed or if we did not want the confirmation, we could turn it
off in settings. For example- the letter c is a combination of
dots 1 and 4. So if we have our fingers on dots 1 and 4,
VoiceOver or speech would say c and we could lift our fingers to
type the letter c, but if our fingers are on the wrong dots, like
they are on dots 2 and 5 or something, then VoiceOver or speech
would say 3 if we were typing in computer braille or lower c if
we were typing in something other then computer braille and we
could feel around and find the dots 1 and 4 and lift our fingers
to type the letter c if we had this setting turned on. If this
setting was off, the c would still be typed when we lifted our
fingers, but VoiceOver or speech would not say c for a second
time so we could have this setting on at first and if we wanted,
we could turn it off when we got better at typing with the apps.
There would also be a setting to have VoiceOver or speech not say
anything until the character had been typed or to not say
anything before or after the character had been typed. there
would also be a setting for what we did and did not want
VoiceOver or speech to announce after it has been typed- just
words, just characters, nothing or both. The first setting would
be independent from the second setting. In other words, we would
be able to set what we hear before and what we hear after we were
done typing a word separately from each other. There would be
feedback options for after a character was typed. The options
would be any combination of beep, vibrate and say the character.
The beep, vibrate and say the character settings would be
independent from each other, meaning that it would be able to
just beep, just vibrate, just say the character or any
combination of the 3, do all or do nothing. There would be
additional settings for what order we wanted these 3 things to
happen in. There would be a setting that could be turned on or
off for predictive typing where we type a few letters and the

anything before or after the character had been typed. there
would also be a setting for what we did and did not want
VoiceOver or speech to announce after it has been typed- just
words, just characters, nothing or both. The first setting would
be independent from the second setting. In other words, we would
be able to set what we hear before and what we hear after we were

feedback options for after a character was typed. The options
would be any combination of beep, vibrate and say the character.
The beep, vibrate and say the character settings would be

syncing notes between my MAC and my iOS devices

2012-11-05 Thread Marcy Weinberg
Hello, everyone,

When I make notes on my any of my iOS devices, iPhone 4S, iPod 4G, or iPad 1,
the notes sync with the notes app on my MacBook.

But when I make notes in the notes app on my MacBook, they don't go anywhere,
not syncing with any of my iOS devices.

I've signed out and back into iCloud in system preferences, and turned off and
on notes in the same place, but no change and no luck.

I'd really appreciate any help with this, and thank you!

Re: iTunes Question.

2012-11-05 Thread Sarah Alawami
No problem. I make mistakes like that all the time and I speak english.

I love the hot spots but wish they woudl work in more then one app.

Ah well. since I dont use air play I only have 1 for the lcd section but yeah
for thos ehaving trouble navigating itunes take the time to create thos
ehotspots to the key points you will need then use the rest of the hot spots
for other apps.

Be blessed and good luck.

Re: iTunes Question.

2012-11-05 Thread Danny Noonan
I love the concept but as far as I can tell, they only last until you quit an
app and often I find they stop working after a while in certain apps like the
sendspace wizard.

I do love them at times for things like character count or static points that
show changing information as you can make a hotspot and then set it up to read
the area when ever it changes. Also, you can use a hotspot to read an area or
move to it.

The concept is great but the implementation is pore and the functionality very
limited. Some script customisation like jfw etc easy enough for dummies lik me
to change vo settings from app to app would be wonderful but you can't complane
for the price and wonderful product.

Danny.
