Thanks for the article and quick overview on IceFloor. I really think it
is a nice tool and makes using and configuring the default firewall
easier.

The only thing I'm missing is a monitor that tells me what application
wants to try to connect to a service in the internet or local network
just during working and gives me the possibility to black- or whitelist
this application :-(. If anyone knows such a program I'd be happy for
giving me a hint.

Ciao,

  Christian

Re-installing the OS on a MacBook Air

2013-07-29 Thread Andy Collins
hi all -

No panics here, I"m not in need of doing this, but need to be prepared, just in
case one day…

As most will know, the MacBooks do not have a cd/dvd drive, and therefore do
not come with a back up disk. So, how do we go about reinstalling the OS in an
emergency? Is there something built-in for doing the same as a boot from a
disc? -

Re: Re-installing the OS on a MacBook Air

2013-07-29 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Andy,

First of all, no Macs come with boot disks anymore. That ended with the arrival
of the Appstore, much to my regret.

All Macs running Lion or later have a recovery partition which is where you go
to reinstall the system. Alternatively, you can download the OS again and make
a bootable USB key, which is what I always do so that I can do a clean install
without being obliged to connect to the internet via ethernet to ensure a
reliable connection.

You can find information online about creating a bootable USB key.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Re-installing the OS on a MacBook Air

2013-07-29 Thread Sarah k Alawami
What I do is I use lion disk maker to make a bootable usb key as they call it.
It's actually pretty easy but make sure you have the partition as a guid
partition first. I also can use CCC to do the same thing so both tools for me
work very well. The advantage is you can keep your lion or mount ion lion flash
drive uo date and it's very fast to boot up in to that recovery consul.

Tc and be blessed.

Sound Forge Pro ® 1.0 for Mac

2013-07-29 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello everybody

We are now able to report on our findings with Sound Forge 1.0® Mac. There are
quite a lot of unlabelled controls on the main toolbar. Gordon and I plan to
sit down and try to label them using VoiceOver at our convenience. However, all
is not lots. Recording is pretty easy, as there is a labelled record button on
the home screen. The part we haven't yet figured out is how you edit a wave
form with the keyboard. We are fairly sure that there is a way; although tour
disappointment it still doesn't appear to be usable as a multitrack recorder.

We will continue to play around with it and, as soon as we have any further
constructive input on this subject, we will let the group know so that those
interested have some feedback to start from.

Kind regards
Lynne

Yes, I did try Sound Forge quite some time ago, I was able to edit with it but
found problems manipulating the data.

Sound Forge for the Mac -as is the case with the Windows version - IS NOT a
multi track recorder or editor.

Re: iTunes And Duplicate Items

2013-07-29 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
hello Sarah

That's not far short of what we have here actually and the vast majority of it
was created from CD or CD image by us personally. But the point here is that
even those songs which we did buy from iTunes are being duplicated and, looking
at one directory of files here, I see that there are no less than 5 copies of
each song, each with "[1] [2]", and so on appending the filename. This is silly
as far as I'm concerned and I can't see how iTunes was ever intended to behave
in that manner.

Kind regards

Lynne

Andy, when you hear the startup chime hold down command r for at most 30
seconds, might be much less on an Air though. The recovery partition
should boot up and you can start VoiceOver with command f5. The rest
should be self explanatory but if not please ask for further help.

Thanks Chris - this sounds the most strait forward method as appose to those

It probably can, but it will try and make you use disk utility. I really
don't' like this method as for me its way too complex. I use lion disk maker
which is a free app that can do this and does do this well.

You will need at most an 8 gig flash drive, for now. We'll see about mavrics
when that comes out as I plan on upgrading that same 8 gig flash drive I have.
I believe you can find Lion Disk Maker at http://macupdate.com

The program is dead simple to use and takes about 40 minutes to make the
bootable key. at least for me. lol!
Good luck.

Re: Re-installing the OS on a MacBook Air

2013-07-29 Thread Gordon Smith
May I just point out that the MacBook Air doe snot have an Ethernet port. The
only kind of network interface is, therefore, WiFi and, if you possess such a
thing as a BlueTooth dongle or modem, you could do it that way. Otherwise, the
USB stick is the only way. Creating a boot image is very easy but I guess it's
only fair to say that the new user might find the process daunting.

I would be happy to write an article for our blog on this if anybody thinks it
would be of help?

Kind regards

Petition to Apple Inc. to make Logic accessible.

2013-07-29 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Folks,

I came across this via Twitter and thought it might be relevant.

It is, as the subject suggests, a link to a petition started by a noted expert
in the field of accessibility which aims to garner support for asking Apple to
make Logic Pro X more accessible. It can be found at:

> http://www.change.org/petitions/apple-inc-make-logic-pro-music-software-accessible-for-blind-users?utm_source=guides&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=petition_created

Lest users have problems with the above link, the shortened version is:

Re: Re-installing the OS on a MacBook Air

2013-07-29 Thread Chris H
Andy yes, as Apple needs to verify it's you who will be reinstalling the
Os. The Usb key sounds the way forward though as it sounds like no
connection is required since you are burning the operating system image
to a Usb key.

Re: Looking for a accessible password manager

2013-07-29 Thread Christian Schoepplein
Hi,

as mensioned earlier in this thread I was looking for a solution to handle my
passwords and other account data across all my systems (Mac OS, Windows, iOS).
1Password seems to be a good commercial solution to do this, but I think I've
found a free and Opensource solution now that is also save, easy to use and
has nearly the same features as 1Password.

I now use KeePass on Windows, MiniKeePass on my iOS devices and KyPass
Companion on Mac OS to handle all my data stored in a crypted database, which
is stored in Dropbox. The programs for Mac and Windows can open this database
directly, because the Dropbox client is running on this platforms, on the iOS
devices the database has to be imported via the Dropbox app if the file was
changed on the other systems.

All programs are good to use with VoiceOver and fully accessible and this
solution costs nothing :-).

Ciao,

  Christian

OT: I need some help off list please.

2013-07-29 Thread Chris Gilland
I need someone to contact me off list, if you've ever used whmcs in
combination with a whm/CPanel server. Tech support is being quite
unreliable. I figure if anyone on the list has used the two products in
combination with each other, maybe then you all could give me a quick hand
off list.

My e-mail is:

ch...@clgproductions.com

If it would be easier, you can call me within the US at:

704-256-0067 extension 401. Yes, it's almost the closing of the business
day, but for this, I'll be happy to answer the business line if I hear it
ring. This matter is fairly urgent, so if anyone thinks they can help, let
me know.

Again, please don't write the list regarding this. I'd prefer to correspond
with you all regarding this matter privately off list.

Chris.

Re: Looking for a accessible password manager

2013-07-29 Thread Dane Trethowan
Yeah, I've heard of that manager though never tried it.

I tried the Dashlane 1 Password Manager which was perfectly accessible for Mac,
its free unless you pay for the syncing across platforms so that may be another
alternative for those looking for a nice Password Manager and automation tool.

Because I'd like to be system indipentend and have my data accessible not only
on Mac or iOS which is IMHO the case with the iCloud password management
solution.

Whilst the new OSX may offer password management the tools that were mentioned
do offer quite a bit more, will be interesting to see the differences.

Re: Re-installing the OS on a MacBook Air

2013-07-29 Thread Esther
Hi Andy,

A quick search of the list archives brought up this MacWorld article by Don
Frakes, "How to make a bootable Mountain Lion install drive"
http://www.macworld.com/article/1167857/how_to_make_a_bootable_mountain_lion_install_drive.html
At the time a new version of Lion Disk Maker hadn't come out, but there's a
link to an older MacWorld article that describes how this works: "Lion
DiskMaker makes it easier to create a bootable Lion installer"
http://www.macworld.com/article/1166702/lion_diskmaker_makes_it_easier_to_create_a_bootable_lion_installer.html

The developer now has a dedicated web page for Lion Disk Maker (in English):
http://liondiskmaker.com/

Otherwise, in general we usually check the macupdate site for software (as
Sarah mentioned), As she also mentioned, there are a few ways to make a
bootable USB key, and they're described in the MacWorld article. They include
using disk utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, and Lion Disk Maker. I did this for
Mountain Lion with Carbon Copy Cloner, which is a paid app I have for doing
backups. Lion Disk Maker is a free app.

At present the dev is working on version 3 which will support Mavericks.

Am I correct in thinking that the "Home" and "End" keys do not go to the

2013-07-29 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Jim,
The commands you want our command left and right arrow, respectively. Home and
End will not help in this case, but these will work in most apps. Similarly,
command up and down arrows will move to top and bottom of the document.
Best,
Zack.

lol. Yeah I hope the dev will update this for when mavrics comes out. I
personally use both ccc and lion disk maker and both work. I love lion disk
maker because of the sound it makes when the usb key is done being made. In
reading the rest of ester's message he is working on a new version so yeah I
can't wait. I keep meaning to review it on my podcast but I keep forgetting
because classes get in the way and those come first.

Good luck all and be blessed.

 Hi Andy,

A quick search of the list archives brought up this MacWorld article by
Don Frakes, "How to make a bootable Mountain Lion install drive"
 http://www.macworld.com/article/1167857/how_to_make_a_bootable_mountain_lion_install_drive.html
At the time a new version of Lion Disk Maker hadn't come out, but there's
a link to an older MacWorld article that describes how this works: "Lion
DiskMaker makes it easier to create a bootable Lion installer"
 http://www.macworld.com/article/1166702/lion_diskmaker_makes_it_easier_to_create_a_bootable_lion_installer.html

The developer now has a dedicated web page for Lion Disk Maker (in
 English):
 http://liondiskmaker.com/

Otherwise, in general we usually check the macupdate site for software (as
Sarah mentioned), As she also mentioned, there are a few ways to make a
bootable USB key, and they're described in the MacWorld article. They
include using disk utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, and Lion Disk Maker. I did
this for Mountain Lion with Carbon Copy Cloner, which is a paid app I have
for doing backups. Lion Disk Maker is a free app.

At present the dev is working on version 3 which will support Mavericks.

 HTH. Cheers,

 Esther

page wrap in pages

2013-07-29 Thread Linda C. Knight

Hi all,

I have a five page document on my screen in pages.

It stops reading at the end of the first page. Is there a setting I can set
pages to automatically wrap? I've looked everywhere and I must be missing
something.

Thank you

Hugs and 73

Re: page wrap in pages

2013-07-29 Thread Sarah k Alawami
I know there is a command that says rap to window. If you set it to that it
should, key word, should, continue reading. I don't use pages so dunno if that
command is standard in pages or if it is only in text edit and Itext express
and bean.

good luck and 73.

Unable to change voice settings

2013-07-29 Thread Fresco Sam-Sin
Dear all,

I somehow am unable to change the qualities of the voiceover. Everything is
read out really slow.
VO-Cmd used with arrows doesn't work. although the percentages are changed, the
voice still sounds the same. I tried to reinstall the voices, but I still keep
having the same issues. So, please help!

Best,
