Re: Anyone Using GPG

2013-11-30 Thread Gordon Smith
I’ve often thought about getting back into that but I’ve decide that SSL
authentication certificates offer a better alternative for mail. Obviously, if
you want file encryption that’s a different matter. I can see why PGP would be
a better option there. Think I’ll pop over to the Synamtec site now and see
what’s kookie’, if I can find it.

Kind regards

Yes, I use it to encrypt mails with people who have also a public PGP key.
Also en- or decrypt files is possible.

Just look for GPG suite for Mac, that is all you need.

All works well with VoiceOver.

Yes, CCC is another one of those excellent value utilities. It’s a flip of the
coin which you choose. I personally bought a license for both because I am
always keen to support small developers who produce amazing software. Speaking

Kait, you have it actually backwards. It used to be called Macsword. Now

Jim,
there is one called Mac Sword. I think it used to be called eloquent.

Imho, though, it's not as good as the online bible you can get for windows.

I also, unfortunately, don't have a link to point you toward for mac sword.

RE: Is Super Duper! Worth The Bother? [Yes, Of course it is]

2013-11-30 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
They pretty much do, do the same thing. The only thing really I saw about
CCC, which SD didn't have was the ability to make a USB bootable installer
drive of Mountain Lion. I'm not even totally sure if they have updated that
feature yet to support Mavericks. Aside that though, I didn't really find
that much difference. I think it's more in which you like better as far as
the interface, and which one you can afford, although both of them are about
the same cost, roughly, if I recall correctly.

safari and mavericks, I think I some how broke it.

2013-11-30 Thread Sarah k Alawami
Hello to all. I'm having issues with safari and mavericks when it comes to
organization of book marks. I did a series n this and got it to work the first
time but with the new patch update I believe something broke and broke in a bad
way.

1. trying to cut and paste a folder to be in ABC order no longer works. it
still ends up at the bottom of the list. I even tried dragging and dropping
both methods with no results.

2. when you cut and paste a book mark in to a new folder, that is, create a
folder and paste a book mark in to it from the book mark editor, you cannot do
this. It still ends up at the bottom of the list. AgainIv'e tried dragging and
dropping both methods with out success.

3. Some how when I open safari now I end up in my book marked editor. I want to
know how to fix this. This happens weather I open a web page via launch bar, or
open safari with my vo quick key and open a web page that way.

Any advice on all of this?

Thanks.

BookMark the app

2013-11-30 Thread Glenn
Hi All,
I recently got the app called BookMark.
As I opened the app on my iPhone, it appears that it only works with audio
files.
I recently bought an eBook called Monumental Myths, which is in PDF format.
I have converted it to RTF and to TXT, but perhaps it reads better in the
original PDF within an app.
My question is, will BookMark read an eBook, or is there a native app on the
iPhone for eBookks?
Thanks

Glenn

Re: Anyone Using GPG

2013-11-30 Thread Dane Trethowan
Using GPG isn't a huge task of mind mangling complexity, you just import the
public keys you want by searching for them on the GPG sever and that's it! by
default GPG will Encrypt when the appropriate key is available for the eMail
address you'e sending to and if there's no match then no encryption, very
accessible too!

Sarah,
I do have iBooks, and I was wondering how I can easiest put the book into
iBooks.
I did already put the book into DropBox, but I don't know if I can get it
from there to iBooks.
I am hoping to avoid iTunes here.

What are the correct steps to add song to the iTunes library on the mac?

I am slowly adding music to my music folder on it and having trouble adding

Re: adding songs and albums to iTunes on the mac.

2013-11-30 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Linda,
If you use the Open item from the file menu, you can select individual songs or
whole directories, which will be added and copied to the library. This is a
little easier than adding stuff to the Music folder yourself, as iTUnes
generally tries to keep that organized on its own.
Best,
Zack.

Re: Anyone Using GPG

Course I forgot to mention that GPG isn't just used for eMail but then again
you probably knew that, great way to protect all those things you have up on
Dropbox or wherever else in the Cloud you have them, share your key with those
you trust and only they have access to your content.

Re: numbers documents

2013-11-30 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Hi there,

I think the latest version is significantly better than the old one. The UI (I
presume you’re talking Mac?) is far simpler and cleaner. In my view, the
usability doesn’t quite match Jaws and Excel on Windows, but it’s certainly a
damn sight better than the iWork 09 version. Voiceover is much less sluggish,
though there are still latency issues. For example, if you hold the down-arrow
key to fly through multiple rows, and then stop, VO is likely to repeat the
cell contents on which you land ad nauseum.

Things like sorting data is, in my view easier. Put it this way, I’ve actually
managed the grading of student assignments using numbers this year; something
I certainly wouldn’t have dreamed of until now.

Cheers,

Dónal

It works out very well.

On my computer it's under Music/iTunes/Automatically add ... or whatever that

installing PlusTech 3600 Drivers On My Air

Hello Folks,

I have a PlusTech 3600 and found this statement when I Googled it. "In Mountain
Lion you will need to turn it on." What does this mean? I found the drivers for
OS 10.7 as a beta., but my Mac Air in system preferences does not recognize it
and it is not listed in the table to add the scanner to the computer. Can
anyone give me advise on how to procede?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Screenflow for video tutorials [was Re: Black Friday Mac App Sales on ABBYY FineReader Express, Checkbook Pro, and Audiobook Builder]

2013-11-30 Thread Esther
Hi Sarah, Dónal, and Others,

Remember to check vendor web sites for educational discounts (and trial
downloads). Telestream, the maker of ScreenFlow, offers a 10% educational
discount to students and instructors on any of their products when purchased
from their web site. This can't be used in combination with the current Black
Friday coupon code, which gives a larger (30%) discount.

Vendors of popular software who give educational discounts on their products
include Hairersoft (for Amadeus Pro), Nisus Writer, and others.

Also, some of these applications occasionally show up as software bundle deals
from the MacUpdate Promo and other such sites a few times a year. ScreenFlow
was actually part of a 10 app MacUpdate Bundle for $49.95 back in early
October. (It was about the only interesting app in that bundle) I think it's
worth it to negotiate the one-time CAPTCHA involved in creating an mupromo
account for those few times that you'll want to purchase one of their highly
discounted promotions on short order.

I notice that right now they have a Paragon mini-bundle running for the next 2
and a half days.
Paragon mini-bundle of 4 apps for $29.99, reduced from $100
https://deals.macupdate.com/deal/15068#comments
"Use NTFS for Mac and HFS+ for Windows to transfer files back and forth with no
compatibility issues, or use ExtFS to create error-free transferability between
your Mac and a Linux-formatted drive."

I don't know how many of those apps work well or accessibly, especially since
one of them claims to let you resize bootcamp partitions, a second lets you
read/write Ext 2, 3, and 4 files between Linux and the Mac, and a third lets
you read Mac HFS files from Windows. The program I've heard that other
VoiceOver users make successful use of is their NTFS for Mac program, that is
also part of the bundle, and normally lists for $19.95. There's a link in the
comments on that discussion page that lets you purchase the NTFS for Mac
program as a download from the Paragon Web site for $9.95 (or half price):
http://www.paragon-software.com/newsletter/2013/20131107_NTFS4Mac11_CamptuneX10.4_SPO_50.html
Here's the shortened link, if that one wraps:
http://bit.ly/18uz1Em

Note that this discount expires today (November 30, 2013). But as far as I can
tell, this doesn't require getting a MacUpdate account.

The mupromo deal of 4 apps runs for a few more days.

HTH. Cheers,

Estger

Re: BookMark the app

2013-11-30 Thread Esther
Hi Glenn,

Sarah's instructions will work for opening either PDFs or ePub ebooks from
Dropbox into iBooks. Just select the PDF eBook you want to transfer and use
the export button. The other way you can handle this is by mailing the eBook
as an attachment to yourself. When you double tap on the attachment, you'll
bring up an "Open in" window with options to either open the attachment in a
default app, which might be iBooks, and a second "Open in …" button that when
you double tap it, gives you a list of other compatible apps on your iPhone
that you can open the attachment in.

I highly recommend getting Voice Dream Reader while it is on sale for half
price ($4.99 instead of $9.99 through this Sunday), because it will handle all
the document formats you mention (not just PDF, but text and RTF files, ePub,
DAISY 2.02, etc.) and let you set up separate voices and voice speeds for each
book, as well as remember your place, and many other features, including direct
downloads from Bookshare (if you are a member) and searches from Gutenberg.

• Voice Dream Reader - Text to Speech (on sale for $4.99, regularly $9.99) by
Voice Dream LLC
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/voice-dream-reader-text-to/id496177674?mt=8

This app is only infrequently on sale, and is so worth it!

RE: adding songs and albums to iTunes on the mac.

2013-11-30 Thread Linda C. Knight

Zack,

I am sorry, I don't know if I understand. Maybe I am making harder than what
it should be, but after I add my music to my music folder in the mac, do I
go to iTunes and go to file menu and arrow to add file to library. Then I go
to music folder and highlight the song and tab to open?

Thanks so much.

Re: adding songs and albums to iTunes on the mac.

2013-11-30 Thread Zachary Kline
Linda,
I think you can do this a lot easier than you describe below. You don’t need to
manually add music to the folder, it will be automatically copied there by
iTunes and sorted properly. If your music is, say, on an external drive, you
can go to the File->Add to Library menu item in iTunes, and find the folder
where your music is kept. Hit Open on that folder and it will be copied
automatically.
Hope this is clearer,
Zack.

Re: installing PlusTech 3600 Drivers On My Air

2013-11-30 Thread Eileens Misrahi
Hi Mary,

i was dishearted to read your email just now. I went ahead and purchased Prizmo
for the Mac, but I will not have the luxury of using a quality scanner. I have
my multi-function Brother laser installed, so I'll be able to use Prizmo with
it (I hope(. I remember that the installation on the PC side I needed sighted
assistance to get it working there. I have been thinking about installing a
virtual machine on the Air, but I was hoping to keep everything separate to its
own operating system. Oh well!!! Another device bites the dust.

Thanks for your candid response.

Cheers,
Eileen

Re: installing PlusTech 3600 Drivers On My Air

2013-11-30 Thread Esther
Hi Mary and Eileen,

The Hamrick Vuescan site claims that the Plustek OpticBook 3600 is supported on
Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) and later, if you first install the Plustek drivers. It
also says that you might have to use the x32 version of Vuescan with this
scanner. This suggests to me that the drivers Eileen found for 10.7 and above
might get this device working, but that it wouldn't apply to Snow Leopard
systems (Mac OS X 10.6) like the one you were running. It also suggests to me
that the drivers might have been written for machines that natively run a
32-bit kernel (essentially, all older Mac models), and that since all recent
Macs, including Eileen's MacBook Air, boot into 64-bit systems by default, and
since this is enforced by all systems running Mountain Lion and above, this
might be why she isn't seeing the device.

I think that the option of booting into 32-bit mode went away in Mountain Lion
and above. There's an Apple Knowledge base article on booting into either
64-bit or 32-bit mode, but it's now marked as archived. Here's the link:
• Archived - OS X: Starting up with the 32-bit or 64-bit kernel
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3773

This has left me puzzled, because I don't see a way to install the drivers on
the new MacBook Airs that ship with the newer operating systems. Maybe Hamrick
means this might work on upgraded operating systems that managed to install the
drivers under Lion or earlier? Might be worth asking the VueScan folks directly
if this is at all possible on a recent MacBook Air.

Eileen, I haven't tried Prizmo 2 on the Mac (although I did have version 1,
which I didn't like), but I think that Anne and some others prefer ABBYY
FineReader Express over Prizmo 2. ABBYY is currently on sale at the Mac App
Store for half price ($49.99) for Thanksgiving. I know Prizmo 2 is much better
than Prizmo 1, but you seem to be a serious scanner, so I thought I would
mention the ABBYY option while it's still active this weekend.

Cheers,

Esther

I set my VoiceOver voice rather fast, but I really don't want to read a book

Re: installing PlusTech 3600 Drivers On My Air

2013-11-30 Thread Eileens Misrahi
Hi Ester,

Thanks for your detail explanation. I will check out the article you mentioned
in your email and report back either way on the outcome of getting the PlusTech
3600 to work or not. Maybe this was what the other site was talking about in
turning on the driver.

It might seem like I just wasted some iTunes credit I had on Prizmo. Since I am
relatively new to the Mac side of things, I think about what I use with the
iPhone. I guess I will need to purchase ABBYY app also. Live and laarn. I know
I will make other mistakes along the way.

Thanks again and I'm off to the computer to read up on how to get the scanner
working on the Air.

Cheers,
Eileen

Re: installing PlusTech 3600 Drivers On My Air

2013-11-30 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Esther and Eileen,
Well, I certainly don't want to be the bearer of false bad news. I do recall
looking on the plus text site not too long ago, because I was interested in
perhaps getting a new scanner. I didn't see any Mac drivers for any of the book
inch scanners except for the one for the 3600 that was marked as beta. And I
don't recall it saying supported lion or mountain lion. I'll have to look
again. Eileen, where did you get the drivers that are supposed to work under
10.7?
Mary
When I was using Snow Leopard, I did try the beta drivers in conjunction with
Dockie scan plus. Unfortunately, the scanner was not seen, so I didn't get
anywhere.

Re: installing PlusTech 3600 Drivers On My Air

2013-11-30 Thread Mary Otten
If you do manage to get this scanner working Undermountain lion, I would really
like to know. I still have one which I use on an old windows XP machine with
Kurzweil. I love Kurzweil. And I do have Boot Camp on my Mac mini. So my plan
had been to simply move my plustek to the window side on Boot Camp . But it
would be nice to be able to use the scanner on the Mac side with Dr. scan. I'll
be interested to see what you find out.

Reading eBooks on the iPhone [was Re: BookMark the app]

2013-11-30 Thread Esther
Hi Glenn,

You can have speech rate as one of your rotor options. If it's not already one
of the rotor options go to Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver >
Rotor and make sure that "Speech Rate" is selected. Then, you can set the
rotor to speech rate and flick down to lower the speech rate in 5% intervals.
Voice Dream Reader has a slider setting that allows you to set the speech rates
and selected voice individually for the books you are reading, which is another
reason I like that app.

By the way, the Bookmark app you got is designed for playing audiobooks and
podcasts that are in the music app. If you want to learn more about it, you
can read my archived list post from November 6:
• Bookmark App for iOS is free today

Esther

Hi Glenn,

You can have speech rate as one of your rotor options. If it's not already
one of the rotor options go to Settings > General > Accessibility >
VoiceOver > Rotor and make sure that "Speech Rate" is selected. Then, you
can set the rotor to speech rate and flick down to lower the speech rate in
5% intervals. Voice Dream Reader has a slider setting that allows you to
set the speech rates and selected voice individually for the books you are
reading, which is another reason I like that app.

By the way, the Bookmark app you got is designed for playing audiobooks and
podcasts that are in the music app. If you want to learn more about it, you
can read my archived list post from November 6:
• Bookmark App for iOS is free today

Black Friday Savings on ABBYY products for Students and Teachers

2013-11-30 Thread Esther
Hi All,

ABBYY Is running a Black Friday sale with up to 80% savings for Academics
(students and teachers) up through December 2, 2013 from their web site:
http://finereader.abbyy.com/finereader_for_mac/
Here are the direct links for students:
http://www.abbyyspecials.com/abbyy-student-savings-program?from=abbyycom_product_visual
Shortened version of students link:
http://bit.ly/18uP7Or
Here's the link for educators:

Shortened link for educators:

FineReader Express for Mac is $20
FineReader Professional 11 for Windows is $34 or $20 for upgrade.

You have to give information about your academic affiliation, and provide an
email address that shows this is an academic institution (e.g., ".edu" for the
U.S.). You're limited to two products.

I don't know how the final checkout works. this just goes to show that I
should follow the advice I gave Sarah earlier about checking the developer's
web site for academic discounts. But I only found this because I wanted to
check reviews of ABBYY FineReader Express vs. Prizmo 2 for Mac at the MacUpdate
site.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi zack and all,

Excellent! I got the music added. Now there is a problem.

When I press spacebar on the song I want to play, iTunes plays another.

However, when I press enter, it plays the right song. How do I fix this?

Thank you,

Re: thank you zack and another problem.

2013-11-30 Thread Zachary Kline
Linda,
If i’m understanding you properly, you are using the ordinary space bar and not
VOiceOver Space. The best way I can explain this is to say that you’re probably
accidentally hitting the play button without actually selecting a song in the
way a sighted person understands it. Hitting enter, for us, is the equivalent
of double-clicking on a song for the sighted people. So if you hit enter you’ll
play the right one, all the time. I’d just get used to doing it that way for
the most part.
Best,
Zack.

Re: Anyone Using GPG

2013-11-30 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

you probably know all this already but I thought what you said about SSL/TLS
and GPG was interesting so here's something from another System Administrator I
know which makes it sound that both systems can be used with great effect
together.

SSL stands for secure sockets layer, it is a technology used to encrypt an end
to end connection between two machines.

When you encrypt an email using pgp, its hidden from anyone who doesn't have
the appropriate decryption key.
When you connect to a website (or email server) using ssl, only that connection
is encrypted, if the original email is unencrypted, and sent on by whatever
server you delivered it to, its unencrypted for that part of the journey as
well as when it arrives at the recipiant.

So, you would use pgp when you want to guarantee that an email can only be
decrypted by the recipiant.
You would use ssl (or tls these days) when you want a connection between you
and a remote machine to be secure from evesdropping by people along the way.
