Decreasing startup time, any tips and tricks?
Good morning all. Using a Macbook Pro 13 inch non-retina mid 2012 running Mavericks, any tips and tricks on how to decrease startup time? I tried repairing the disk but all was ok there. Somebody suggested repairing disk permissions or so I thought. So should I try this? Any responses greatly appreciated. Thanks! I can't figure out how to add an apple loop to a track. I know the normal directions say to drag and drop the loop into the track, but I can't seem to do that. Some of the older garage band tutorials were using the perevious version of Garage Band, so it's hard for me to follow their directions because the older version's layout is very different from this one, and I don't have any experience with the older versions. Can anybody who has experience with this help me out? Maybe I just don't know where to drag and drop the tracks, or maybe there's a voiceover trick I can't figure out? I've also tried just copying and pasting the loop into the track, but no dice. If somebody has it on their computer but doesn't have a lot of experience, maybe if they have more vision than I do they could still look at it and help me out? Thoughts? What I do is use a tool called “tinker tool” I think I spelled that right but you can find it on mac update’s site. I then go to the log in items tab and uncheck all my start up things. I also try and not have any externals start up at start up if I can help it. I’ve gotten it down to about 45 seconds or maybe 50 which is pretty darned good for my older machine. Take care. Re: Mavericks and reinstallation or I guess installation for that matter
At stand by sleep yes. At reinstallation no, as I created a pen drive with my mavericks install on it. If you want to know how I managed to do that read the blog post at http://tffppodcast.com/listen/ or for an audio tutorials of one way to do this go to http://tffppodcast.com/premium and you might find something of interest, or maybe not. I do go kind of fast in that particular tutorial but I”m working on an alternative one that talks about an alternative more complex way to do this so that you don’t have to dl the one from the internet. Guess it's also worth noting that in the services submenu it says building. What in the heck is it doing, and it would really be nice to have more feedback than that if it's actually downloading it. Re: Decreasing startup time, any tips and tricks?
Most of them I knew but I did apply those concerning software that starts at Login, thought I'd take a look and there were several things I didn't need or that had been deleted from the computer entirely, I made the necessary changes and that has made a difference so regardless of whether these tips work or they don't they're still good maintanence tips if nothing else. I was most interested to read the discussion about how much free drive space is optimal for a Mac, that's something I've never considered before and probably because the drive on my Mac computers is or never has been anywhere near full as most of my content is written to and read from external media. Curiously the page doesn't discuss disk defragmentation though I can possibly see why, Drive Defragmentation on a Mac computer isn't a serious performance issue for most Mac users, it only becomes an issue really when you start doing heavy disk dependent tasks such as Audio and Video editing. For those who don't want to worry about the defragmentation of your drive then there's always the quick fix, backup your drive, erase the drive and restore the backup back to the drive. I need a VO accessible metronome or beeping app
Hi all, I do a lot of cycle training on a static bike and my coach sets me sessions where I need to cycle at 70 revs per minute, 80 rpm, 90 rpm, 100 rpm and so on. I therefore want an app that beeps at these kinds of rates. I've looked at about 4 or 5 musicians metronome apps where all but one wasn't usable with voice over. the one that I could just about use though wouldn't let me set the rpm as I wanted - it kept to 4 bpm intervals. I've googled the topic without luck. Can anyone suggest an app where I can set the beeps per minute so I can then cycle along at that speed for up to about 6 minutes at a time? Re: I need a VO accessible metronome or beeping app
Hi Chris, I have a slightly different suggestion that might work well for you. There's a musician's app called GigBabyFree! by ioMetrics LLC that is quite accessible, and that has a built in metronome: • GigBabyFree! (free) by ioMetrics LLC https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gigbabyfree!/id306833575?mt=8 I have the paid version of their GigDaddy MultiTrack Mixer app which is also accessible, and this is a cut down version. This is actually better than a straight metronome, because it comes with a list if backing rhythm tracks that you can play at the tempo that you set up on the first screen. So let's say you open the app at the tempo screen (the selected first of four tabs at the bottom of the screen). Flick right to the text field for the tempo, double tap, and then use the on-screen keyboard to change that value and type in the number of beats per minute you want to use (e.g., 100.0), and double tap return at the bottom right corner of the keyboard to enter the value. There's also a slider, but it works in percentages, so just use the text box. Now you could just flick to and double tap the start button that is just above the Tempo tab at the bottom left of the screen to start the beat, and double tap again to stop it, but let's make this more interesting. Double tap the Rhythms tab that is the 4th tab at the bottom right corner of the screen -- also the last element in the screen, so you can navigate there with a four finger tap on the bottom half of the screen. On the GigBaby! Rhythms screen there's an alphabetical listing of rhythm tracks with a table index along the right side. Let's sample the track Funk 1. Flick to it and double tap. On the screen that comes up, flick the Listen button and double tap. Double tap again to stop the sample playing, then move back to the previous screen of rhythms. Double tap the Tempo tab to get back to the Tempo screen. Now when you double tap the Start button you'll hear the rhythm track you selected playing at the specified tempo. If you navigate to the first element of the screen with a four finger tap in the top half of the screen, you'll hear VO announce the name of the track that is playing, Funk 1. Flicking right will give you the bar number, and them the beat number. (In this free version of the app, the tracks are on a 4/4 count.) So you can easily work out how many minutes you've been playing the track by counting the number of bars, multiplying this by 4 for the total number of beats and dividing by the beats per minute you used for the tempo. If you want to reset the beat and bar counters, after double tapping the Stop button, flick right to the Restart button and double tap. The other thing you could do is simply identify songs in your iTunes music library according to their beats per minute (BPM). That's actually one of the fields you can fill in for each track. Then you can make workout smart playlists where you choose your music according to the BPM, and for a total playing time up to some fixed total. Or you could simply loop the playback of some of your favorite songs with the correct BPM. There are some famous examples of songs with certain BPM values. When people are trained to administer CPR to heart attack victims, they should optimally press at a rate of about 100 BPM. The common way of getting people to remember the correct tempo is to get them to keep the pace of Stayin' Alive - the song the Bee Gees sang for the John Travolta movie, Saturday Night Fever. (It's actually about 104 BPM). You could use the metronome feature to identify songs in your music collection that are close to the BPM rates you want to train with. HTH. Re: I need a VO accessible metronome or beeping app
Tempo Perfect by nch software is an excellent metronome for the IOS platform. They probably have a version for Mac OSX as well. Of course, it deals with beats per minute, not revolutions per minute, but that's not a big problem as I think you just want a steady beat that can be adjusted faster or slower. . .' I therefore want an app that beeps at these kinds of rates. The free service should be fine though I don't know what to expect from the free service these days as I haven't used that in years. If my memory serves me correctly you'll probably cop a little advertising, an announcement every now and then and obviously the quality won't be as good as it could be but then again its free so enjoy!
