Opening a stream from Safari

2013-12-14 Thread Deb Lewis
Hi:
It seems that since upgrading to Mavericks, I can’t open a pls stream from
safari. This was brought to my attention again by someone who can’t open my
husband’s internet station from safari. Sure enough, I can’t either.
So how to associate a .pls or .m3u file with iTunes so that safari will call
that rather than just hanging. If the files are opened in iTunes directly they
play fine. I can always capture the link and just move it to iTunes and that’s
probably what I’ve done without really thinking about it, but I know that
people who listen to our stream won’t necessarily do that and they shouldn’t
have to since this has worked fine in the past and still does in windows.
so, is there something we can do to modify the .pls so it still works for mac
users or is there some instruction we can provide to listeners? I’ve searched
through various Mac forums and they’ve made a few suggestions but none have
actually worked.
Again, this is totally about file associations that seem to be broken since
upgrading. I know these worked at one point because I tested them, and I’ve
also tried a number of other .pls files which are not working so it’s not jus
the ones we created.

I’ve tried in both Mac and Windows to download the ID3 editor referenced in
this email. I’ve had no success in any environment. What am I missing? Would
love to use this I’m sure.

Yeah Geoff it worked exactly as you said when I went with JAWS. It
hadn't worked that way using either the Mac or NVDA. Was quite
straight forward this way. Interesting. I never reached the page with
the questions when I did it with the Mac.

DVD's on the Mac

2014-02-22 Thread Deb Lewis
Hi:
I bought an exercise dVD. I know DVD’s are problematic and I understand about
the graphical menus etc.
In Windows, I can run this through DVD Audio extractor and make files of the
audio content which is really all I need.
I’ve had no luck playing or extracting the audio on the Mac. I’ve done all of
the following:
DVD Player: I used the Go menu to select a chapter. Sometimes I can get the
first one to play but I have never advanced to additional ones although they’re
listed.
VLC: I can play the first chapter. can’t play any additional ones. Sometimes
the DVD skips. Don’t know if that’s about copy protection or something
objecting to VLC.
Handbrake: I can play and rip the first chapter but it’s always choppy. can’t
move beyond that.
DVD Audio extractor: Can sometimes play and rip the first chapter. Nothing
beyond that. It’s not choppy at least.
It would be a lot more convenient not to take these to a windows PC to either
play or extract the audio. Is there anything I can do? I feel like i’m trying a
lot of options. Unfortunately I don’t have other DVD’s to compare so I don’t
know how much is accessibility and how much is copy protection, but I can
extract the audio in windows so would think the Mac could do the same.
I’d appreciate any help because I’m hoping to buy a couple more of these and
just don’t know how to proceed.
Thanks so much.

Yes, this might help in fact. It was only letting me see two chapters though
and I know there are at least 5.
The first three are not really content. so somehow I have to get to 4 and 5.
trying again.
But I do understand better how it should work.

OK. I was able to rip what might be all of the DVD but it’s not playable even
after converting it to MP3. It’s all chopped up like the DVD was skipping. I
know the disk is fine, it played in the DVD player or at least some of it did.
And it did rip the audio in windows. But my result in Handbrake is not useable.
Did I do something wrong in the selections or is it blocked somehow?
Appreciate that I’m getting a little closer at least.
I think I took all of the defaults.

Which encoding preset should I be using on Handbrake? I chose Universal. So far
I’ve tried a couple and they all get the same effect of having the media skip
when it’s played back. I’m assuming that’s an encoding problem. I should be
able to play them in VLC right?
Thanks to anyone who can give me a hand with this.

I don’t think the drive or the media are flawed. I know that when I create an
MV4 using any app, they are flawed. This is the only DVD I have, but I do have
experience trying to create Apple format files, they all skip even if this
drive is not involved. They play in Windows, not not he mac.

Re: DVD's on the Mac

2014-02-23 Thread Deb Lewis
It's a top of the line Macbook Pro from 2013 so think it's officially
a 2012 model. It plays .mv4 files that come from elsewhere but has
never played them that I've ripped from day one. I have several
conversion programs, all same experience. Extracting to MP3 or any
other format is always flawless but not any of the Mac formats.

Re: DVD's on the Mac

2014-02-25 Thread Deb Lewis
Thanks for this most helpful message. This has indeed been a daunting task and
I’m grateful for all the info.
Mac the Ripper does appear difficult to acquire at best after looking through
info on the forums. But Mac DVD Ripper Pro appears to work quite well based on
the demo and I’m likely to purchase it. I’ve also downloaded the DVD player
listed below but haven’t tried that out yet.
MDRP does let you look at individual titles on the DVD which has perhaps been
the greatest challenge in this. There are a few unlabeled elements but I think
most also exist in the menu. I’m going to verify that on friday with a
co-worker.

Exchange distribution Lists in Mac Mail

2014-02-28 Thread Deb Lewis
Hi:
I have a feeling this is a no go sort of idea but I’m hoping I’m wrong.
I use exchange for work. I often do my work email on the Mac. So far so good
for Exchange.
I have two distribution lists in exchange. when I enter one or the other of
them in an address field on the Mac I get a list of everyone who has ever been
a member of the group, not just the current members. It’s nuts since these
groups have had changes over time. They’re all correct of course on the
exchange side of the house and work in Windows office. But not on the Mac.
Is there anything I can do about this? Can I create a Mac distribution that
doesn’t confuse Outlook and be done with it? can I do anything so that the Mac
sees the correct list not including folks who were long ago deleted?
Both of my lists act the same so I don’t think it’s that I’ve done something
wrong.

Re: Exchange distribution Lists in Mac Mail

2014-02-28 Thread Deb Lewis
No, you can’t even see the list on the Mac. only when you start a message.
There is no distribution list on the Mac side. But when you apply the alias it
does fill in the names—way too many names.

Booting Macbook Pro into safe Mode

2014-03-09 Thread Deb Lewis
Hi:
I haven’t been able to register for new accounts on commercial sites since
upgrading Mavricks.
In my security settings it also says that some kind of Google site checking
service is unavailable. ON the Support forums they say you can try unchecking
the warn for fraudulent sites box and see if that helps, but it comes back for
them and for me. So if it does they say you need to boot into safe mode which
will clear the cash. You don’t have to log in.
the only info I need is to know when to let up the shift key after booting and
how to know when the slow login procedure will have completed. I’m assuming VO
doesn’t actually work for any of this.
Any clues will be helpful since it’s rendering safari to be a paperweight on
the net.

Yes, I think that’s going to help. The five to 15 was particularly what I

Re: Hi all, Skype and vo problem and info from apple accessiblity

2014-03-28 Thread Deb Lewis
I’m not having any focus problems. I just downloaded the new update. I do
notice that I have to interact with the contacts table now whereas before I was
able to just arrow up and down in it without interacting. That’s too bad really
but technically it’s the Apple way so not much to do about that probably. But
otherwise I haven’t noticed any focus problems so far.

Re: IOS7.1: convert v. convela

Yes this is totally the case. I typed in the notes app, in a search screen, in
email and got the same weird result every time. I don’t see how an agent could
have gotten any different. I used mixed case, all lower case, quotes as you did
int he message, etc. No difference.
It’s not a show stopper but it is weird.

Re: opening iCloud documents

2014-04-04 Thread Deb Lewis
So I save all my docs in SkyDrive or I guess they call it OneDrive now. But it
really is just that, one drive and they’re all together like i want.
It was too much trouble trying to find them by opening each app until I found
whichever one they were created in.

Re: An interesting observation regarding points of interest availability between blind square and RNIB navigator

2014-05-20 Thread Deb Lewis
Yes. GlindSquare gives you points of interest based on the distance you’ve set
in the search. The RNIB app is going to give you a radius distance that you
can’t change. If you set blindSquare to the top of this threshold they’ll be
very similar. I generally prefer the blind square method because you can
actually find out what is near rather than what is around in the area.

Re: Reinstall mac problem

2014-05-26 Thread Deb Lewis
Press VO F2 twice to go to the window chooser and move to the window for the
password. Now you’ll probably have to route the mouse there and click it to get
into the field But then you’ll be able to type the password. This just happened
to me. Focus is just not in the password field and this is the only way to get
it there.

Re: last question of the day regarding streaming a station in itunes

2012-07-07 Thread Deb Lewis
If you don't know the direct link to the stream, I think the easiest way is to
first browse to the link in iTunes. Then open that link which will cause the
player to open if it's a supported stream.
Itunes will actually put the link in a playlist called Internet songs. There is
an Information command, I think it's Command-I but it's in the menu, and you
can get the resulting link from there.
I have a playlist in iTunes called Radio stations I Like. I paste this item in
there, and edit the information so that the title is correct. Now it will play
any time requested in this playlist.
It took me awhile to figure this out but I got tired of playing things from my
recents and having them disappear. This is a permanent solution for anything
that plays in iTunes.

Adding and Removing Items from Menu extras

2013-08-02 Thread Deb Lewis
Hi:
I need to remove the PPP modem Menu extra and add the one for my User. I've
read how to do this in the Mac but can't replicate it with VO.
To add the User I'm to locate the folder and double click the item. I assume it
means to open it. I do and it puts me in the extras but doesn't add the item.
To remove one it says to press command and drag it to the desktop. Nothing
seems to happen when I press Command and try to drag the item.
So I haven't been able to accomplish either task.
Any help would be appreciated.

IA Writer Exporting

2013-09-06 Thread Deb Lewis
Hi:
I'm trying to use IA writer on the Mac with Mountain Lion. everything is great
and even terrific except that I can't export a document. It saves fine. when I
export, I can choose any format, any location, and either type of markup, but
no matter what I choose it just sits in the dialog and never exports the
document. the only option that works is cancel and of course there's no
resulting rtf, .docx file etc. What in the world am I doing wrong? It looks so
straightforward otherwise.
Thanks for any help. I really need for this to work and it's a fabulous little
word processor except for this.

Re: Audio File Converters

2013-11-22 Thread Deb Lewis
I downloaded the free version of switch and agree that it's great.
Aside from supporting a worthwhile copany, which is a good thing to
do, what do you get from the paid version? I couldn't see any
description of that, and I could be just missing that.

Re: syncing mail

2013-11-23 Thread Deb Lewis
If they're Imap accounts you don't need to sync them at all. The
simplest way to do this is to just create the accounts on the Mac as
new accounts and let them sync themselves from the IMap server.
There's so little to that, it's not worth trying to sync the settings.
I have lots of accounts and they all sync on their own between all my
devices. You might only sync the accounts if they're POP.

Re: pages on iPad and printing

2013-12-09 Thread Deb Lewis
The very best way, if you do not have an airplay printer, is to sync
your documents in ICloud. Then they'll be available on any devices you
sync including the Ipad and the mac.
That's how I have to do it in fact. But I'd do that even if I had a
better printer because this way I can work on them on any device.

Using an Uninstaller

2013-12-10 Thread Deb Lewis
I downloaded and installed Flip for Mac. It isn’t working at all as expected so
I may as well be rid of it. It comes with an uninstaller disk image which I
assume I must install in order to uninstall the program. I’ve never done this
but I’m fine to do it except that I’m then wondering how I get rid of the
uninstaller program. It seems odd to install something to uninstall something
else. I just want this all ultimately gone since there was no value added.
Thanks for any clues on this. Don’t want to make a mess here if it can be
avoided.

Re: Using an Uninstaller

2013-12-10 Thread Deb Lewis
That’s probably why it doesn’t work well, I’m trying to convert a format that
is too new I imagine. Meanwhile, to run it without actually installing, do I
just browse to it in the disk and open it? I think I’ve done this before and
just didn’t think of it.

Re: ABBYY FineReader Pro now available for the Mac

2013-12-10 Thread Deb Lewis
The Pro version is fine with the Hovercam.
I think the main pro of Docuscan is that the interface is the same in Windows
and the Mac. But if you’re comfortable with how the Mac natively presents
things, Fine Reader Pro is a great investment.
I love DocuScan for reading PdF though. I bought it when there weren’t too many
good options for the Mac, and I love that you can just pop it open, hit a menu
option and read. but it’s a lot of money for a little bit of convenience.

 Hello Gordon,

If you bought the new FineReader from the Appstore, you shouldn't need an
activation code. If you bought it from the website, as I did, the code
comes in an email along with the serial number, customer number and all
 kinds of other stuff.

 Cheers,

 Anne

Re: Using an Uninstaller

2013-12-10 Thread Deb Lewis
Well the option for package contents was greyed out so I just installed it
anyway with excellent results. When the install completed, it uninstalled the
original program and removed the uninstall. By the time I was back in the Apps
list the entire mess was gone and almost forgotten. So apparently it was
actually the only way since the package contents wasn’t available. But at least
it works and no bad consequences.

Reading Chat HIstory in adium

2011-12-05 Thread Deb Lewis
Hello:
Would appreciate some help with adium and VO. I'm doing IRC and all is working
well except that I occasionally need to read the chat history if i've missed
something important. It's not in the window where the live chat is occurring
and i can't find it anywhere. Have looked through the menus including all the
events and I can find no evidence of it. If anyone could unravel this mystery
I'd be so appreciative. Thanks!!

Excellent. I already had the short name for facebook so was able to
skip down to setting it up in Adium. Works like a charm.

Navigating in Apple Mail

2011-12-08 Thread Deb Lewis
Hi All:
My friend and I are both using the Lion version of Mail. I love how mine is
working but we can't get his to do the same. don't know what I'm doing or what
he's not doing.
In my mail I can tab between the mailbox column and the list of messages. When
I'm on a message I can jump to the content with VO-J and back to the message
list. I don't return to the mailboxes unless I shift-tab back there. It's great.
My friend not he other hand is only able to move between the mailboxes, message
and content using the Link command with VO-J. Tab and shift-tab do nothing for
him.
We think we have things set up pretty much the same but we obviously do not. He
is certainly able to get back and forth but it's much more awkward because when
he leaves message content he is bounced all the way to the mailbox column
instead of to the message list. I'm sure it's something simple, but we've
missed it.
Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Deb

I'm not sure what the effect of adjusting them is and what impact that would
have on how the keyboard performs then. No question that I might have adjusted
them but not sure what the relationship is.

Instapaper on the mac

2011-12-18 Thread Deb Lewis
Hi!!
I've had Instapaper on the IPhone for awhile. I remember the tedious process of
saving the bookmarklet. Now i'm trying to do it on the Mac. Just can't figure
out how to proceed.
It says to drag and drop the bookmarklet on to the bookmarks bar.
I did VO comma to theoretically get hold of it but it said the link wasn't drag
able. The text seemed to be but then when I opened the bookmarks I couldn't
paste it. I'm not sure what to drag and where to drop it. Or, can I just cut
and paste something? But what? There were a lot of instructions for putting it
on the phone and I had no real difficulty following them. Get the sense this
should be much easier than I'm making it. Any help will be most appreciated.
