Re: [Mac-Access]: Saving mail on iPhone

2015-05-26 Thread Diane Bomare
It is possible, but not as straightforward, as it could be. The folder has to
be set up before moving a message. Open the mailbox in which you would like to
save the subfolder/mailbox. Do not select an message. Tap Edit in the top right
of the screen, and go to the end and find Create new. If you have additional
questions, feel free to write to me privately, to avoid this triplicate email
problem we are having on the list.

useful facility.

On the iPhone I tried the move button for iPhone mail which does let me move
the mail item to one of a predefined set of mail boxes, but I could not see any
way to create a mail box (or folder) with a name which I create.
Is this possible on IOS and if so how?
Many thanks.

Re: [Mac-access]: test

Is it possible that you have a default email set to send from, that differs
from the one you registered with the list?
I have this issue, as my default email on the iPhone is set to send mail from
my iCloud account, but I am registered on this list from my earthlink email.
The only way I can post to the list is to reply to another post, edit the
subject field, cmd-a and delete in the message body. Then, I can write my own
message. Sometimes I forget .

Re: [Mac-access]: double letter entry on my iPhone.

2015-04-20 Thread Diane Bomare
Sarah,
I agree that turning quick nav on and off should be tried first, as it only
involves pressing left and right arrows. However, I have this problem often,
and that simply does not fix the problem. As I wrote last week, Apple is
tracking this problem, and welcomes feedback. It is not a keyboard issue, and
it doesn't help to "forget" the BT connection and re-connect. Even turning off
one keyboard, and turning on another does not help. It is a real pain to have
to re-boot, especially while in the middle of a message, but, for me, that is
all that will fix the problem, other than resorting to the virtual keyboard.

Have you actually had this problem, and had turning QN on/off work under IOS
8.3?

Not true, on any point. 4s will probably not be able to run IOS9, but should
mot be upgraded to IOS8, as it is sluggish, at best
Bt keyboard must have quick nav off in order to write in an edit field.

Battery life seems to improve with each iteration of the phone

The 4s will be at end of life when ios10 comes out.
The whole 5 series is no better than the 4s you have unless the 5 series phone
you get has more memory in it than your 4s. Battery life is no good until you
get a 6+ and that is the case since the 6+ battery is larger.

You don't have to set it up, but, it is certainly easier than typing in
passcode and/or password.
It is pretty easy to set up, and it is normal for it to ask you to reposition
your finger during setup. It wants an image of various ways you may touch the
home button.
You can set up to 5 fingerprints, and edit the names of each.

Re: [Mac-access]: Some Apple news

2015-04-15 Thread Diane Bomare

The current AppleTV model has been out for a few years, and a new one is
expected to be released in late June or early July. No doubt, it will be more
expensive, but it may have features that you can't live without, or make the
current model drop even more.

I love my AppleTV, and have it connected via an optical cable to my stereo
system. It is easy to use it with its remote or via the iPhone. There is no
reason to have it connected to a television, if you cannot see the screen.
VoiceOver is on by default, but, is difficult to turn on, if it is turned off
at the beginning. At least, without sight, it is difficult to get it back, if
it is bypassed at the beginning. Diane Bomar

If you are asking about the Apple BT keyboard, it is the top rightmost key. It
toggles between the virtual keyboard on/off.
The key location is different on some other BT keyboards. On the Amazon Basics
keyboard, it is the key to the left of the rightmost key on the top row.Diane

Re: [Mac-access]: IOS 8.3: double and triple characters using BT keyboards

2015-04-15 Thread Diane Bomare
Turning quick nav on/off is not helping me, at all. Even unpairing and
re-pairing does not help. Only rebooting the phone helps. Definitely not a
keyboard problem, as it happens with both of my BT keyboards, Apple and Amazon
basic. I don't know what triggers it, as sometimes it starts when the keyboard
is first turned on, sometimes after it has been connected but not used for
several hours, and, most annoyingly, in the middle of writing.

This problem was intermittent under 8.2, but happens several times a day, under
8.3.

I hate inconsistent problems! Some of us have it, and others don't. Also, this
has happened whether my phone is charging or not.

[Mac-access]: IOS 8.3: double and triple characters using BT keyboards

2015-04-14 Thread Diane Bomare

Since upgrading to IOS 8.3, I have been having
even more trouble with bluetooth keyboards typing double and even triple
letters. Unpairing and re-pairing the keyboard does not fix the problem. Only
rebooting the phone fixes it, temporarily. This has happened 3 times today, and
several times during each of the previous days.

I called Apple Access about this yesterday, and they set up a case, saying that
engineering is tracking how many are having this issue. It happened on occasion
since IOS 8 release, but not as much as it is now. It can start in the midst of
writing an email, or when left paired for several hours without being used.
Are others experiencing this problem?

Both keyboards have the apostrophe/double quote key to the right of the
simicolon/colon key.
Each have function, control, option, command keys, in that order to the left

I prefer typing on the Apple keyboard, because of its responsivemess, but it
probably isn't worth the difference in price.

Regarding the phone choice, I would suggest that you get a 5s, rather than a 5.
It is a 64-bit phone with the touch ID feature, a faster processor, and will

If you are referring to the IOS update released last week, it is 8.3, not 8.03.

The FN key placement, is the same on an Apple keyboard.
I LOVE my k750, because it is full-size, good key layout and spacing between
the keys, a true inverted T arrow keys, and doesn't require me to be tethered
to the computer. It is as usable whether on the desk, or on my stomach when I
am horizontal .

I use Logitech bluetooth keyboards on my Windows and Mac. The one for the Mac
is a k750, I think. It is light, has a good feel for the keys, is a full
keyboard, including numpad. Keys are spaced nicely. The only problem is that
one has to go to the Logitech site and download keymapping software, because,
in their infinite wisdom, have the default of the FN keys messed up.

It is also solar powered, and has an on/off switch. I think it cost about $70
on Amazon.

David,
Thanks for the information about this keyboard. I was not familiar with that
brand. Do you have the quiet or the pro?
Do you have a list of the alternate function keys?
Also, I would be ingerested in receiving information about the num commander
key, as I just ordered one from Amazon. It won't arrive until Wednesday.
Thanks, Diane Bomar

Re: [Mac-access]: Compatible Mac Keyboards

2015-04-05 Thread Diane Bomare
I use Logitech bluetooth keyboards on my Windows and Mac. The one for the Mac
is a k750, I think. It is light, has a good feel for the keys, is a full
keyboard, including numpad. Keys are spaced nicely. The only problem is that
one has to go to the Logitech site and download keymapping software, because,
in their infinite wisdom, have the default of the FN keys messed up.

It is also solar powered, and has an on/off switch. I think it cost about $70
on Amazon.

[Mac-access]: How do you all use Amazon?

2015-04-04 Thread Diane Bomare
Please write to me privately, especially if the moderators believe this
discussion is off topic. My address is at the bottom if this message.
I am collecting information about how VoiceOver users, either on IOS or OSX,
use Amazon. This is not a money making, or officially endorsed, endeavor.

On IOS, do you use the app or the web site, or both?
What influences your prefenrece?
What are your opinions about the accessibility/usability of the app and/or web
site?
Has it gotten better or worse, over the years? Please explain.
How often do you shop with Amazon? daily? weekly? several times a week? several
times a month? ...
If never, and you live in a country that has Amazon, does accessibility
influence your decision not to shop with them?
What suggestions do you have for improvement of their app or web site?
Do you use "subscribe & Save" and does it still work for You?

Would you be interested in participating in a formal survey on this issue?

II am experiencing problems using certain aspects of the app and web site with
VoiceOver. These specific problems are not occurring on Firefox, running on
that other OS that shall not be named.

Thanks for your feedback,

Have you tried just opening the file? cmd-O
Have you tried cmd-m, and right arrow to file, and down arrow to "open with" to
see what options are listed?
Have you tried cmd-shift-m? or cmd-M, M?
The Mac should recognize the .zip and associate that with the program that will

Re: [Mac-access]: putting music folders on iPhone 4

2015-04-04 Thread Diane Bomare

I find that reading the reviews is important, because, sometimes they point out
workarounds, you can find out if any problems you are having are mainstream
issues.

But, the last date that an app was updated, tells a whole lot. I saw an app on
the app store, recently, that cost $19.95, but had not been updated since 2011!

Re: [Mac-access]: IOS: copying text from webpages using voiceover and IOS 8.2

2015-03-26 Thread Diane Bomare
Yes, I do have a bluetooth keyboard, but is not working correctly. I plan to
take it to see its buddies at the Apple store, later today.

Also, the quad finger tap cannot resolve the problem, as I want to extract
several lines.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Last night I was able to get some pieces extracted, but it the amount selected
was inconsistent and unknown until pasting.
Put your finger near the center of the text that you wish to select, and double
tap and hold until you hear the sound. It is similar to moving an app. A popup
will appear on the screen, with the choices "define" and "copy". Double tap on
copy, then paste into your file using the editor from the rotor, or tap and
hold on the area you wish to paste the text.

Re: [Mac-access]: Selecting and copying text of a web page on a mac

2015-03-26 Thread Diane Bomare
Margaret,
The problem I was having on my Mac, is that my right command key will not work
for this or any other hotkey that uses command as a modifer. That was the
default setting on my Mac, and though I think that I know where to change it, I
have not. The right command key works as expected for command-tab.

In order to copy text, try holding down the shift while using down arrow to
move to the bottom of the information you wish to copy. Then immediately, try
the left command key-C. The system should say "copy." At that point,
command-tab to the file, in which you wish to enter the copied text. Hit
left-command-v.

Let me know if this works, for you.

[Mac-access]: IOS: copying text from webpages using voiceover and IOS 8.2

I need to copy and paste text from several web pages, for an urgent project. I
have tried pinching, but that only selects a letter, word, or line. Edit is not

I need to extract the text so that I can use it as notes for a document, that I

Re: [Mac-access]: Is MS Word Accessible on the Mac?

2015-03-13 Thread Diane Bomare
The only reliable, tried and true, methos for changing MS accessibility
strategies, is through GSA. And, good luck with that! This is not to discourage
trying, though. 20+ years ago, when there was no access to the MS OS, except
through the use of an Optacon, I was in the forefront of that battle. This is a
whole discussion that is off topic for this list, but, anyone can write to me
privately for more information. Suffice it to say, the threat of lost sales to
Apple has been the only motivation that seems to have made a difference with
the arrogant that MS is, and that businesses and government are dependent upon
using their products. Publicity in mainstream magazines could help some, maybe,
but the masses really don't care if we have access or not. We live in a world
where most people cannot be bothered with anything that does not directly
effect them.

I lost my career in Software Engineering over the Microsoft attitude, having to
compromise and choose going on company sponsored disability, to ensure that my
children continued to receive health care, and a certain standard of living. MS
is still vulnerable now, but, people are still dependent on their SW, thus the
reason for using Word, instead of Pages. If it were possible for Apple to make
it super easy for people to use Pages, instead of Word, such as a Word layout
in Pages, that might help. People do not want to learn new technologies; most
don't even know how to do things with a keyboard. Hopefully, things have
changed enough now, that MS will respond more positively, but it the threat has
to come from entities stronger than any blindness organization can exert.

Re: [Mac-access]: External Blu-Ray Drives

Actually, I was referencing a point made a couple of years ago, regarding using
an external drive with a mac mini. It was my understanding, that only the
Superdrive from Apple could be used for booting or software installation

Which Blu-ray dvd drive is recommended by Apple, and what features does it

Re: [Mac-access]: No sound from internal speaker on my 27 inch mac

2015-02-20 Thread Diane Bomare
I am having a similar problem, after upgrading to 10.10.2. However, I am not
positive that it was not happening under the previous release, as I was having
audio issues then, but attributed the problem to faulty speakers. Now, with
internal or external speakers, or headphones, a message saying that audio is
set to default from airplay, and there is a choice or "continue" or "revert".
Selecting either one causes VO to stop. When I restart it with command-F5, I
get the same message.
It is strange in that the audio works for a while, then that message appears. I
have set airplay, at times, in iTunes, to play music through my home theater
system, but never set it to default to airplay in the preferences.Leedy Diane

In situations, such as this, EVERYONE having the problem must write to whoever
can fix it. This guy wrote back to me many times, saying that there was no
problem, and stated that they had added the VoiceOver compatability switch, and
everything worked fine for everyone else. Because they refuse to communicate
via anything other email, it is very difficult, at best, to explain what is
going on. I need to retrieve files from SendSpace on a regular basis, and have
given up trying to do it with my Mac. Instead, I download them to my 10+ years
windows xp laptop. This is quite a pain, as I want to get away from using that
machine IIf only we could convince these guys to check out the issue on their
end: run VO and turn off the screen!! I asked him to do this, several times.

Re: [Mac-access]: University reading and DRM on web

2014-12-11 Thread Diane Bomare
If this has already been explained, I apologize for the repetition.
PDF files are often produced as am image, or picture of text. This is very
different from a PDF file that has been entered via typing or using optical
character recognition. To someone visually reading, it is usually impossible to
tell the difference. But, for those of us who cannot visually see a picture on
the screen, the document appears to be blank. Run the image through sofware
that will perform OCR, and you will be able to read the document. Sometimes,
the format gets messed up, in which case, one must reprocess the image with
adjustments to the OCR application to accommodate the format that is desired.

It is important to let your university understand what the problem actually is,
so that, in future, they will save documents via OCR rather than by just taking
a picture with a scanner.

appear blank, just constantly saying "new line, new line" in preview. When I

I don't know if it is a frames issue or a DRM problem.

Has anyone out there solved this or come across the same?
