Re: [Mac-access]: introducing my self to the email list
Hi and welcome to the list. I have a 13-inch Mac Book Air and love it too. I’m still running Mavericks, which is what came pre-installed on here. I will probably upgrade to Yosemite sometime down the road, but I’m waiting until it is less buggy. This is my first Macintosh computer, and I got it last year just after Christmas. I just got hold of a Braille copy of Janet Ingber’s book entitled “Learn to Use the Mac with VoiceOver: A Step-by-Step Guide for Blind Users,” and I’m going to devote some time to it over the next several days. I think you’ll find this as well as other lists to be a wealth of information, minus the misinformation that pops up here and there due to spelling mistakes. I sure have. Re: OS X Yosemite review: a solid upgrade for everyone (especially iPhone users)
This is a very nice review. I’ve made the decision not to upgrade at least for the time being. I still have things to learn in Mavericks, and I want to hold off on upgrading at least until most of the bugs in Yosemite are squashed. So at least where this user is concerned, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I’m not trying to put down Apple either with this, but I just feel Mavericks is good enough for me right now. It will be a year on December 27 since I’ve had my Mac, and it is my first one. But to each his or her own. Jake Please visit me at http://jazzyjj.dreamwidth.org . Re: new macbook air owner with question
Couldn’t have said it better myself. I got my Mac Book Air almost a year ago, and have found the on-board help and tutorial to be very good. There is also AppleVis, which has a wealth of information not only for the Mac but also for iOS devices. As others have said, we’re always glad to assist too. Re: Verbosity in E-mail
Hi everyone. Sorry this is a bit late, but I’ve been going through my email and deleting unwanted messages to try and find the root cause of a rather odd problem. But here is a tip I found yesterday on AppleVis, which can help with email verbosity. Apologies in advance if this is a duplicate post. But you can actually control how much of the message is read when just arrowing to it or going through email for the first time or whatever. To do this, bring up the View menu by going to mail Preferences with Command-Comma, and then tab to the View menu. I had to turn Quicknav on in order to find the exact setting, but it is called List Preview. You will find a pop-up menu which lets you control the number of lines read after announcing the message. Hope this helps someone. Jake —-Please visit me at http://jazzyjj.dreamwidth.org . Re: Deleting podcasts in iTunes, What is the trick?
On a related note, whenever I download podcasts from their respective websites--for either later listening or if I listen right when iTunes opens up after said podcast episode has downloaded--a rather interesting thing has been happening lately. Awhile back I downloaded an album for free from another website, and I listened to it the entire way through. This involves a very great deal of work on our part and I’d like to tell you a little bit about why that is the case. For some time now, we have been experiencing a problem with the server administration tools we used to use to help us administrate both the member listing for all of our groups, and also other vital server configurational data. The net result of these problems is that the member listing is not visible to us at all, neither is any of the other server data, or the list data itself. Therefore, the only access we have to the list configuration is that which every user has to their own specific configuration. Without going into too much technical detail, Gordon keeps having to manually rebuild the Open Directory database because there’s a problem somewhere in the system and it keeps causing corruption. The GUI-based administration tools are useless so Gordon needs to use the Terminal and command line tools to keep this airplane flying! Indeed, Apple’s own engineering staff have been unable to determine the cause of the problem and their ultimate advice was to simply trash the server instance totally and rebuild it from the ground up with a new OS install. That is fine in principle, but we are keen to retain as much information as possible in order to minimise inconvenience to our clients and group members. Please know that even those of you who are not our direct clients are important to us. Although our first duty is to those for whom we host services, we regard all of our members as part of what we do. Anyway I am babbling. e h This means that, in order to obtain the address of each user, along with any specific configuration settings they may have set, we have to effectivelyΩzsw log in as though we were that user via the web interface at http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/mailman/listinfo/mac-access/options/your-address@your-host.whatever/. Aside from this, we’re going to have to manually replicate all of the generic list data onthe new server for every single one of the groups hosted here. This, believe me, is no easy task; as some of the groups used by our commercial clients use very highly configured virtual hosts. One of our most valued non-commercial clients has multilingual options configured which we are also very keen to replicate. We shall be in touch with that client directly shortly to discuss the way forward for them. Gordon has spent most of this weekend working behind the scenes in the room from which we run all of our servers; (I’ve almost forgotten what he looks like! ;-)); on the new system, and even as I write he estimates that several more days will elapse before we’re ready to even test the new system locally, let alone expose it to the Internet. Why am I telling you all this? It’s really quite simple. We require, and would very much appreciate, your assistance. It would make our lives far easier if you as list members would take a moment to drop us a line privately, using the support address supp...@mac-access.net to let us know whether or not you anticipate or intend to remain a member of this group in the medium to long term, or even whether you wish us to add you to the new system at all. As well as this, we would be grateful if you would please let us have details of any specific settings you have configured on our server. For instance, if you are using digest mode to receive messages in bulk, whether you have a system password configured which overrides the default, etc.. Of course, when the new instance goes live, you will be able to modify your own configuration once you’ve been subscribed. We are simply trying to save you the work and minimise your inconvenience. :) We have not far short of 500 members in this group alone now, and it would be a horrendously laborious task for Gordon to use the web interface to inspect every single user’s individual configuration; especially since the majority of users have never changed any settings. You may say “why not just use the defaults then?” That in theory may save time. But we are anxious to have the transition be as seamless as possible for everybody and, therefore, we’d like to have this data available in a database which I shall be compiling

Re: Voiceover coming out of one ear
Hi George. Glad to hear you’re on the mend. As to VoiceOver with headphones, this has happened to me before once on my Mac and several times when I had my Dell laptop. What I did was to jiggle the headset cord a bit, the part that is plugged into the laptop. Hopefully someone else on list can give a better answer as I’ve not used earphones of any kind on my Mac yet, except for once briefly at work. Somebody stole mine. Re: WWDC Stream Info Needed; Urgenly
I’m listening to the stream as I type this. Unfortunately I can’t be at my laptop for all of it as I have other things to do including bringing up my clean laundry pretty soon here. But I got to the live stream by going to the AppleVis website, and clicking on the entry for WWDC Blog. When you’re there you should find a direct link to the Events section of Apple’s site. The live stream began playing on my end pretty much right away, and I didn’t have to do anything. I was expecting a bit more volume, but I guess that’s to be expected for a live event like this. Re: Hebrew voices, thoughts and question?
Interesting. I wonder if a program such as Balabolka or DSpeech would work? Not sure if those 2 even work with Apple products but just a thought. I, too, frequently use the Nuance voices on my Mac. Or perhaps the Hebrew voices are coming in a future update? JAKE JOEHL jajo...@att.net On May 7, 2014, at 9:56 PM, Laurel and Stockard laurel.stock...@gmail.com wrote: Hi guys, I ran across an interesting piece of information today regarding a Hebrew voice for text to speech solutions. Apparently, Nuance has developed recently and put out a Hebrew voice, named Carmit. This voice is available on windows and Android platforms. Now, what makes this interesting is that from what my research taught me, Apple actually uses Nuance as a voice provider. Most of my voices that I use with voiceover are in fact Nuance voices. Tarik, the Arabic voice, and Aurelie, the French voice, are 2 examples of this, as well as the English South African voice. Now, apparently all that Apple would have to do it would seem to make the Hebrew Carmit voice available would be to add it to its Nuance voice server. It seems that this could be rather an easy fix for Apple, especially since they already use a tun of Nuance voices. Question 1, what do you guys think? Is this a possible solution? I know there are a small group of us that really want a Hebrew voice. question 2, do any of you know if it's possible to somehow get a Nuance voice, like this Hebrew one, on the mac through some 3rd party means? I wish there was a way I could try and make it work. Anyway, I'm interested in you alls thoughts on this. If you wanna know more or hear a sample, just google Hebrew voice Carmit Nuance. Hi Mark and welcome aboard. I am rather new to the Mac too. I just got my Mac Book Air after Christmas, and love it. To open a website in Safari, press Command L and then type in the URL. When Safari is first launched though you will automatically be placed in the address bar. To exit a website hit Command W, and to close out of Safari altogether Command Q. AppleVis is probably where you want to look first for training. Go to www.applevis.com . I’ve also found Google Chrome to be a great browser, and Chromevox is very good. I was wondering the same thing, because the low-battery notification on my mid-2013 Mac Book Air isn’t that accessible either. It just says “Notification Center, Image” at about 1 or 2 percent, can’t quite remember now. But I recently purchased the Battery Monitor app and it is great. It’s available for $4.99 from Marcel Bresink Software-Systeme, forget the link offhand but if you search for “Battery Monitor” on the AppleVis website you’ll find it. David Woodbridge even did a podcast about it. I haven’t gotten the Growl notifications to work, don’t know why. But it’s well worth the price. Re: other voices now in 10.9
I’m currently using Daniel for Chromevox and he’s working well. Just out of curiosity though, would it be possible for me to obtain some voices I am missing? I’m missing UK-English Emily, Sangeeta and Jill. If not that’s okay, but I just find it rather strange that these voices are not on my system. I even did a search for them in the text field, but no dice. I’m running 10.9.2 on a mid-2013 Mac Book Air. I know at least some other people have these voices, because I listened to an Apple Vis podcast where they were demonstrated along with the other ones. The Socializer cannot be used with VoiceOver at this time at least, but it is an awesome product. Re: accessible website building solutions
Drupal is also said to be very accessible. That’s the platform on which the new website for my volunteer job was going to be built. At the beginning of last year a former coworker of mine sent me a half-built login page for our new site, and it was very accessible in Windows but not at all on the Mac with VoiceOver. I lost the URL to that page, otherwise I would’ve tested it out with Chromevox. But that’s just as well, because we have absolutely no funding to continue with the new website. But I digress. I think Drupal is at http://www.drupal.org . I have no firsthand knowledge of it, but I heard it works well on the Mac and Windows. Re: how to make a group email?
If you are sending the email to a bunch of people, one good option is to put all of them in the BCc field and then in the To field just type your name and/or email address. This helps eliminate spam, and it also prevents all recipients from having to weed through all the email addresses to get to the message body. Hth. Re: Google Chrome on the Mac
I actually like both, and don’t have a personal preference at this point. But then again maybe I will prefer one over the other as time goes by. I’m going to install ChromeVox on my Mac using the instructions provided earlier, and see what I think of it. But I can tell you for certain that my sighted life-skills tutor prefers Chrome over Safari any day. I guess one thing that I find a bit interesting is that some links work just by hitting Enter, while for others Enter doesn’t work and I have to hit VO Spacebar. One example of this is when checking my work email and going through the Spam folder, Enter does not work for opening that folder but it does work otherwise. My work email account is a subdomain of Gmail. But perhaps that is just a VoiceOver thing, one which I haven’t quite gotten used to. This applies to both browsers. I want to get this book too. Jonathan seems to really do a nice job with anything he does, although I do wish Mushroom FM was still on air. But oh well, there are other cool radio stations to listen to including his own Mosen Explosion. But back to Twitter, I have been registered I think since the summer of 2009 with my personal account. I also help run the Twitter account for my volunteer job, and that one's almost 3 years old. I haven't yet tried out any of the Mac apps, but Easy Chirp works great on there. I tried accessing Facebook today on the Mac, but gave up. I much prefer Twitter these days. Re: Initial impressions of 10.9.2
I upgraded too and am finding it to work very well. I just noticed something this morning that might in fact be another bug fix, not positive though. I have used Exact Contact for a couple years now. My brother forwarded me a message about this service awhile back. For those unfamiliar with it, it is an online contact management platform that is very accessible. Anyway, I needed to edit an appointment I had scheduled for tomorrow, and I noticed that some of the edit fields for date, time, etc., were read out a bit better. But I’m not sure if in fact this is a Voiceover enhancement, as I haven’t used my Mac for very long. But it’s awesome that Apple is actually listening to their Vo users. Apple Script with Voiceover?
Hello everybody. I noticed that in the Voiceover Utility under General, there is a checkbox which says “Allow Voiceover to Be Controlled with Apple Script.” What exactly is this and does it have any advantage? I have left this box unchecked both on my MBA and on my sister’s MBA, but will we gain anything by ticking it? I know about screen reader scripts to better enhance accessibility in some programs, but I guess what I’m asking is what is the point of having a setting for this? Not trying to be picky or anything. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed getting acquainted with Voiceover. It is an awesome screen reader. Re: Nisus writer pro
Never tried out any of the Mac word processors except for Text Edit and Pages, which I checked out in more detail today. They’re pretty good, but I guess I’ll know more when I start doing my weekly grocery lists on here. Duplicates in Apple Mail?
Hi everybody. Just curious why there are 2 of every folder but my inbox in the default mail client on the Mac. It is a great client and very accessible, but I’ve never seen these duplicates before. Only the first Sent, Trash, Junk and Drafts folders seem to contain messages when I do something with them. Voiceover Not Starting Automatically on My Sister's MBA
Hi everybody. I spent the night at my parents’ house in part to help a sister out with her Mac Book Air. Last night I updated her Mac to Os 10.9.1, which seems to have gone smoothly. However, Voiceover will not start automatically for her. I tried going into System Preferences and changing some of the Accessibility settings, but still no dice. Command-F5 works like it should though. Is there something else we should be looking for? She has an 11-inch model. I’m assuming everything worked all right when the guy at our local Apple store turned on Vo. Mine doesn’t seem to have this problem. --- Mac Access At Mac Access Dot Net --- To reply to this post, please address your message to mac-access@mac-access.net You can find an archive of all messages postedto the Mac-Access forum at either the list's own dedicated web archive: http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/pipermail/mac-access/index.html or at the public Mail Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/. Intro and a Question about Notifications on the MBA
Hello everyone. My name is Jake and I just joined this list yesterday. I began receiving posts right after I received the document outlining list conduct, so I’m assuming it’s okay to post this now. Anyway, a sister and I both have Mac Book Airs and use Voiceover. Hers is an 11—inch which she got at the beginning of the month. I got mine 2 days after Christmas and it is a 13-inch model. Everything is for the most part working great thus far. I have more or less been designated my sister’s trainer at least until her One-To-One membership is activated. I’ve been curious though about some of the notifications, specifically the low-battery notification. Has anyone gotten it to work with Voiceover yet, and if so how did you go about this? I read on Apple Vis about the Low-Battery Monitor, but my current financial situation doesn’t allow me to purchase that. I did receive a Twitter notification a couple days ago while checking email, and the notification was spoken. But the Notification Center interface seems rather weird.
