No, the two are independent applications although yes, you can access Disk Utility via the menu structure from within the recovery tool, just as you can from within the Mac OS X installer utility. But, if it's too much hassle to go to the Utilities folder to access disk utility, how about just using the Mac OS X Finder shortcut, Command+Shift+U, then hitting D which will highlight Disk Utility. Then just open it by pressing either Command+O or Command+Down-Arrow. Like Windows in some respects, there are several ways of doing these things with Mac OS X. I am not sure how your Mac Book will compare. If I need to restart the system the Mac does naked a system sounds as it reboots. This is pretty much all I need - instant shut down through sleep and a reboot on the odd occasion for which there are existing sound indicators. What I do find difficult is using the option key to enter boot camp or recovery disc or external drive boot . I cannot see when the menu when boot options comes up so I end up having to count up to 30 and even then I might find myself going back into Mac OS by mistake. I am hoping the tactile covers sold by the A T guys might help me with this, but if any of you have any suggestions for me regarding this, I would be open to trying them. I will be practing a lot. In general VO K will put voiceover in key describer mode. A bit like NVDA 1. This is not a toggle though press escape to leave VO key describer mode. VO M will bring up the menu bar which will get you to most things you need. Shift VO M will bring up the context menu, a bit like shift F10 on windows or pressing application key. unfortunately I have not found a source where both MacOs shortcuts and VO keystroke are listed together. This should get you started in Mail though. Press command N for new Mail Press command shift D to send Mail message. Press Command shift Y to add to add contact. Command R to reply Command shift F to forward Command Y to view attachment. To insert an attachment to a mail in Mac simply press command c on the file you want to attach in finder. Command tab back to Mail and then simply press command v to paste the attachment in the Mail. I love the simplicity of this method. To enter multiple email addresses separate them with a comma rather than the semi colon you use in windows outlook. If you hear VO giving auto complete option you can either just press return to accept auto completion of an email address or vo up and down to hear other auto complete options. To set up groups you need to do this not in mail but in address book. Ask again if you need help with this. personally I use VO J to jump between message table and message content. Voiceover will read the message and VO jump you back again to the message table ready to move to the next mail. To move to the top of the mail list press shift vo home. - you will need the equivalent to home on the laptop. To get to the bottom of list shift vo end or again the laptop equivalent. Re: AirPlay
Airfoil is useful in scenarios where you either do not have Airplay compatible devices or you simply want to listen to your audio from your iOS device to your PC or mac for example. On 25/05/2012 01:52, Gordon Smith wrote: Hi Geoff Yes, please don't misunderstand me. I'm sure there are scenarios where AirFoil will be of great help. I'm not familiar enough with Airplay as a whole to comment in detail. The only thing I can say is that it works. :) As for the review, we think it would be better posted to our sister group. However, I'll post a link when I get it done. Lynne is working on another project at the moment, as am I. So the review may have to wait a while. But the more I play with this machine, the more I like it. I'll keep you advised if I discover anything else. But the iPod and iPhone dock is truly superb. The LCD display panel slides off to the side of the machine which exposes the dock. My iPhone 4S fits perfectly in the dock and, when you press the button to slide the display back into the centre of the machine, the dock moves backward, taking your iOS device with it, and then it's hidden by the display. You can since the iOS device's contents so that all of the info is displayed on your main screen, and you can control the device fully by way of a remote control or top-mounted buttons. The iOS device is really well supported. The Panasonic picks up your bookmarks in, for instance, audio books and lets you start playing from there if you wish. There are so many other things I haven't yet discovered. But hey, I'm off to bed now so I'd better stop there. :) Gordon On 25 May 2012, at 00:37, Geoff Waalergeoff.waa...@gmail.com wrote: It still comes in very handy if, for example you want to broadcast from an IOS5.1 device to multiple AirPlay devices simultaneously. Re: ordering my ipad
My opinion is it's each to their own. I like the idea of a larger screen, better quality sound than even the iPhone 4 and longer battery life, something stupid like 10 hours over wifi. The larger screen may make it easier for me to type, not that I can't manage the iPhone 4 (I can and still do to this day), but the more the merrier I say. The same is true for sound. The speakers on the iPhone 4 is the best I have heard from any phone, but there is always room for improvement. Again the same is true for the battery. The battery is excellent on the iPhone 4, can get 2 to 3 days out of it. But again the more the merrier. But I know there are battery cases for the iPhone such as Juice Pack, but haven't tried or needed to try any of these. My advice is to go to an Apple reseller and play with an iPad there which is what I will do. Hope these are useful. Im+ Pro
I purchased Im+ Pro last night after having spare credit in my iTunes account, and so far I like it a lot. We are at version 6.x now, so don't know what has improved since 4.x or 5.x. But on the whole, the app runs excellent on both my iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4, both running iOS 5.1. No lagging whatsoever. Connect to wifi on mac
Hello all. As you know, I am researching the possibility of getting a mac in the future. This may not happen until a few months or more, but still, I want to ask a question. How would I go about connecting to wifi networks? I was able to connect to my Sky wifi with no problems on both the iPhone and iPod Touch, once I changed the WPA key anyway, but that was down to user error. Is it a similar technique on the mac? If for some reason I cannot connect to my wifi network, can I just plug the ethernet cable into the appropriate port and it will just connect? Please advise. Oh, good point, as I would need Firefox for those times when a captcha is needed and no audio version is available. There was Solona but the developer is very ill and hasn't been online for a while. Re: Switching to a mac
So David, can you read PDFs fine on the mac? If so what app do you use? I have heard of Preview, does this work well with VoiceOver? I suspect it does since it is built in, but no harm in asking is there. On 14/01/2012 23:18, David Griffith wrote: I am sure that the Mac will provide a good experience for all the things you mention. I take the approach of using VM fusion with my Mac and I consider that I therefore have the best of both worlds. If I need to study a table I switch very quickly to Windows, Word and Jaws. If I need to read a PDF I use the Mac. I set up a boot camp partition but, if starting again from scratch, I would not now bother as fusion is a far better solution , including the capacity to install and set up Windows without sighted help. Once you get used to it file management is far easier on the Mac. There are differences but whenever I am in Windows I find myself wanting to use column view . Downloading files is very efficient and fast on the Mac in my experience but again it is completely different from Windows and you will need to learn different techniques if you want to monitor downloads. The main problem with picking up the Mac is that there are lots of information out there which is useful for visually impaired people but it tends not to be centralised as much as for the commercial Windows screen readers. However lists like this are invaluable as a learning assistant. A big learning curve is ahead but I am sure you will enjoy it. Re: Copy and Paste on the iPhone
Yes. In a text field rotor to edit, flick down to select or select all, double tap. A menu should appear with options like cut copy or paste if there is text on the clipboard already. If not just cut and copy. Alternatively you can flick down until you hear cut or copy then double tap to perform this action. Paste is also in the edit rotor providing there is text on the clipboard. Re: Copy and Paste on the iPhone
Don't think I could either, it sounds too complex for my involuntary hand movements. On 10/01/2012 20:00, Sarah Alawami wrote: Yeah I cannot do that jesture because of my wrist problems. I wish apple would have made it so you can flick to select via the edit option then once you double tap that you can turn the rotor and flick up and down to select the line, word, char and so forth. I did suggest that to them. On Jan 10, 2012, at 11:30 AM, Red.Falcon wrote: Hi there! Ok when sitting on the phone number! It should also select line by line if the rota is set to that! But not sure! Then of course when you've got the number/words selected use the copy and do with it as you will! This pinch thing can be a little tricky you might change a rota setting as you open your thumb and finger if you put a little twist as you open them! But keeping them straight will select the items in question! hth Colin On 10 Jan 2012, at 18:08, Geoff Waaler wrote: Hi Paul, To extract a phone number, let me set up an example. Lets say I have a text message as follows: For a good time call 867-5309 and ask for Jenny. Perhaps someone can find a better method but there appears to be no way to select the phone number exclusively while viewing a text -- IE when not in edit mode. Instead I used the roter to get to edit and flicked down to copy (the only available option) the entire message. Next I can either go to email or create a note where the above number is to be pasted.. Again I use the roter to land on edit, flick to paste and double click. I now have the entire text quoted above, but all I want is the phone number, hence I move my insertion pointer to the F in For, but must pinch those five words away. As one experiments with pinching this will become a lot easier. You do a two fingers opening gesture I think of as a reverse pinch to select right of the insertion pointer and a real pinch (close two fingers) to unselect. What is selected/unselected depends on the size of the gesture and current roter setting. If selecting characters, a half inch open pinch gesture will likely cause VO to say that the r was selected and I'll hear three clicks indicating that the f and o were also selected. The same gesture while the roter toggle is set to words would likely cause the words for a good to be selected. I would hear three clicks and VO announces: good selected. So I would first rotate to words and use a large open pinch gesture to select: For a good time call. If I accidentally over do it and select the phone number I can use a closed pinch to unselect it. If I only selected the word time I can do a tiny open pinch to select the word call (all data to the left remains selected). Upon selecting the first five words, for my purposes I could press delete to make them go away, however, if you wanted to cut or copy them for some reason, you could get them to your clipboard by toggling the roter to edit, flicking down to either cut or copy and double tapping. Either via cut or pressing del, those five words are gone -- I now have text reading: 867-5309 and ask for Jenny. Now all I need to do is place the insertion pointer to the right of the phone number, rotate to words and use an open pinch gesture to select the unwanted four words as described above. When VO says something like: Jenny selected, press del and only the phone number remains. HTH. It sounds as though you get an additional command sequence to initiate calls and text messages through the web interface of My Phone Desktop. With Type2Phone you can type in the content of text messages, and cut and paste content from your Mac clipboard to your iOS device, but there's no additional controls to initiate phone calls or send the text messages -- it's basically for typing. With the other Mac desktop app that Ed mentioned in his earlier post, iKeyboard, you can use your Mac keyboard like a paired Bluetooth keyboard if you turn VoiceOver off on your Mac while you type. That means you can use the regular Bluetooth shortcuts and command sequences that you'd use with an Apple Wireless Keyboard, for example. In addition, there are a few F-keys that get special functions -- like a Home key and a Spotlight search key similar to the iPad Keyboard Dock with dedicated keys in the F-key row, since you're not going to use your k ey bo ard to control things like iOS brightness with the low-number F-keys. I suspect that if you use a full keyboard with iKeyboard, you also get use of the numpad keys for numeric data entry. The support for additional language keyboards is better with iKeyboard -- Greek, Russian, and more non-European languages that are not yet fully supported with Type2Phone. And you can't do the copy and paste transfer of text from your other Mac apps with iKeyboard, the way you can with Type2Phone. HTH. You can basically control you phone and send photos to the phone via the my phone desktop app. First when you run the my phone desktop mac client you get asked to install java run time. this was a surprise to me. After installing the java you try and open the app and it stays busy the whole time. I tried reopining the app as well. Now mind you I don't have the mobile app installed so that might be the culprit. Take care all.
