2012-01-02 Thread Glenn
That happens to me a lot.
I just got a new case for Xmas, the "Keyboard Buddy", and perhaps it will do
better.
One thing I have noticed with the new case is that my double-tapping is more
responsive than with my old case.
My old case was the hard case that would act as a stand for either watching
the screen or doing a video call, because of the fold-out picture-frame
stand in the back.

Hi Michael,

I'm wondering if your speaker / earpiece switching bug is the same as the
proximity sensor bug many of us experienced when the iPhone 4 was first
released. The proximity sensor, which is located next to the earpiece on the
iPhone 4, is a sensor that recognizes when some object, usually a person's
face, gets close to the earpiece. For VO Users, the proximity sensor is what
normally tells the iPhone to switch it's phone audio between the earpiece
and the speaker. For both VO and non-BO users, the proximity sensor prevents
the User's cheek from "pressing" any buttons on the touch screen whilst the
phone is being held against the face. The issue of unwanted earpiece /
speaker switching as well as unwanted button presses by the User's cheek
were widely reported by both VO and non-VO Users when the iPhone 4 was first
introduced. Apple released several IOS 4.x updates meant to address the
issue and I was under the impression that the issue was fixed for most folks
after one or anoth
er of those updates. I almost returned my iPhone 4 back when the issue was
making my calls almost unbearable as you mentioned, but one of the IOS
updates took care of the problem and it hasn't affected my phone since then
except for the following scenario. One of the other common causes of the
issue is the use of an improperly fitted case. Any case that protrudes too
far below the top edge of the iPhone4 can cause this issue. The first case I
purchased for my phone was a leather wallet case and the strip of leather
across the top of the screen would constantly cause the phone to switch
between speaker and earpiece because of the interference with the proximity
sensor. I was able to replicate the issue at will when the phone was in that
case. The other 2 cases I've used on my iPhone 4 -- The Speck Pixelskin and
the Mophie Juice Pack Plus -- both work fine as their top edges do not
interfere with the proximity sensor. One other thing I seem to recall was
that a number of folks
were able to take their iPhone 4 back to the Apple Store or wherever their
point-of-purchase was and get it replaced.

Hi Michael,

I'm wondering if your speaker / earpiece switching bug is the same as the
proximity sensor bug many of us experienced when the iPhone 4 was first
released. The proximity sensor, which is located next to the earpiece on the

face, gets close to the earpiece. For VO Users, the proximity sensor is what
normally tells the iPhone to switch it's phone audio between the earpiece and
the speaker. For both VO and non-BO users, the proximity sensor prevents the
User's cheek from "pressing" any buttons on the touch screen whilst the phone
is being held against the face. The issue of unwanted earpiece / speaker
switching as well as unwanted button presses by the User's cheek were widely
reported by both VO and non-VO Users when the iPhone 4 was first introduced.
Apple released several IOS 4.x updates meant to address the issue and I was
under the impression that the issue was fixed for most folks after one or anoth
er of those updates. I almost returned my iPhone 4 back when the issue was
making my calls almost unbearable as you mentioned, but one of the IOS updates
took care of the problem and it hasn't affected my phone since then except for
the following scenario. One of the other common causes of the issue is the use
of an improperly fitted case. Any case that protrudes too far below the top
edge of the iPhone4 can cause this issue. The first case I purchased for my
phone was a leather wallet case and the strip of leather across the top of the
screen would constantly cause the phone to switch between speaker and earpiece
because of the interference with the proximity sensor. I was able to replicate
the issue at will when the phone was in that case. The other 2 cases I've used
on my iPhone 4 -- The Speck Pixelskin and the Mophie Juice Pack Plus -- both
work fine as their top edges do not interfere with the proximity sensor. One
other thing I seem to recall was that a number of folks
were able to take their iPhone 4 back to the Apple Store or wherever their
point-of-purchase was and get it replaced.

2012-01-02 Thread Jonathan Tyrer
This is a strange one, I was totally in the same boat as you with my
iPone 4 - it was unuseable without the workarounds you mentioned.

I still had people saying it wasn't happening to them and that it was just me!

Now have a 4S and I can say it is a lot lot better. I can't say it
never happens, it happened about an hour ago, but it seems that if you
get it to your ear smoothly, it starts off on the earpiece and stays
there, if it's funny at the start your best ending the call and
calling them back.

I'd say it's 99% better than before.

Of course, if you are waiting untill August, we'll be only weeks away
from the iPhone 5 and you might as well wait for that one!

Happy new year.

Jonathan

Re: the I-phone 4 s

2011-12-07 Thread Lewis Alexander
Hey bubba, that sounds like a decent plan to me. I still have the 3GS and to be
honest, for what I use it for, it does a great job. I don't use it for the
internet etc as I'm not a fan of using internet on small touch screen
interfaces with big fingers like mine.

other than that, the 4S sounds like a worthwhile investment justifying the
price though seems a bit of a thing. £500 pay and go and we're waiting for o2
to release as pay and go. I don't like contracts as it's just something that
I've had a very bad experience with some years back.

As always, it's an amazing product and I love the feel of it.

I do have to admit one thing though.

I wish the iphone was a bit larger and thicker.

Excuse the rant but here goes. woof woof woof!

These days, it's all about making a product really thin and light, but to
someone like me, I prefer something more rugged and thicker, weight's not an
issue but a larger device would suit better (not iPad size but say another 1"
either dimension would give some extra surface to work on and just a bit more
room. just a thought.

I love the 3GS to bits but as I say, I don't use internet on it. I prefer my
laptop to that anyday.

just wish apple would give us the freedom of tethering for the iphone to mac.
then guys like me in the IT sector can still have a modem for on road use or
emergency work, etc.

nice review bubba and keep it up lol

lew (off to bangor for a bit to pick up a laptop of great interest. woopee!)

Hi, well there is not a iphone4g but I assume you mean iphone4 and yes the
iphone4s has a much better camera. It has a 8 mega pix camera and the
iphone4 has a 5 mega pix one. Also the iphone4s has a much bigger lens and
other hardware with in the camera that makes it a much better camera also
don't forget the processer is much better and that is a bigger issue then
the camera. It has the same amount of ram but I think faster ram and you can
also if you wish to do so get more storage up to 64 gb and this is a much
bigger issue for some than the camera! Also you have the new voice command

there are plenty of reason to upgrade if your contract is up and especially

Also, I want to make sure, does the iPhone 4S only have a 5 mega pixel
camera, like my 4G?
If so, I will not upgrade until the iPhone 5 comes out next spring.

does the i-phone 4 s have the same hardware design as the i-phone 4, meaning
the power button at the top right hand corner, the volume and mute buttons
on the left edge when the earpiece is facing up at the top?

Re: the i-phone 4 s

2011-12-06 Thread Geoff Waaler
Hi Glenn,

The diameter of the 4S lends was increased along with a nearly tripling in
resolution (8MP vs 5MP). To help explain why 8 is nearly three times greater
than 5, remember your exponents and consider a square inch with five dots per
inch. You would need 25 dots (5*5) to fill that space. Now, if you wanna
increase the resolution to 8 DPI you'd need to come up with 64 pixels instead.

Because of this change in specs, a case designed for use with an iPhone 4 will
not work for a 4S unless you don't mind black edges around your pics.
Conversely, a 4 will fit a 4S case since the only difference would be a larger
aperture hole.

HTH.
Geoff
