I do and have no problem here.
However I don't use all modules and don't know if the modules you want
will work...
Just be sure which perl you execute since the default will stay the
macosx installed version . You can change the link however to the
darwinports version. Just don't throw the original perl version away
since it is needed by MacosX ( I've read this but never checked)

Thanks...I have the Darwinports path "/opt/local/bin" before the
"/usr/bin" so that wouldn't be a problem.

Something to think about...

Thanks to everyone who pointed out that I could just hit return
instead of entering a password for the darwinports CVS command.

I'm rather red-faced over it -- I did do that, and there was no
output, and I returned to the command-line, so I thought that meant
the login had failed! I'm really not thinking UNIX, am I?

Just press return. Most anonymous CVS servers have a "blank" password.

I've never used DarwinPorts, so this is just a guess. Every time I've
checked out something via Anonymous CVS, a blank password - i.e. simply
hitting 'return' without entering a password - did the trick.

Can anyone help me with DarwinPorts?
I found their website while looking for an OSX-compiled pdftohtml,
and followed the help and instructions up to this point:

where it tells me to simple do this in the Terminal:

but I get asked for a password. There's no mention of this, and no
password I can think of, like "anonymous", or a valid email address,

It just returns

so I'm pretty much stuck on Page One.
Any help gratefully received.

well, I'm certain that the darwinports will benefit from the previous
porting projects experience. Jordan once wrote a rather persuasive
email why FreeBSD ports needed redoing, make macros not being the most
user-friendly/extensible/maintainable of systems.

As to why not fink, I'm not sure. Purely for me, I found fink tied me
to tightly to what other people wanted (in terms of configuration etc),
as do pretty much every other porting system (with the possible
exception of Portage, which I haven't used yet). This is not to say I
found fink bad, just I haven't found my "prefect" ports engine yet.
Maybe this will be it, maybe not.

Hmm - this does burst my happiness bubble quite badly to know
that there are parallel projects and that they're not able to
directly leverage each other's work. IMO "because it'll be
better" is never a good enough reason to re-invent the wheel
unless someone can also explain why the previous work isn't
fixable.

I think it hopes to be more extensible than fink, in terms of embedding
in other applications (though I know this has been done with fink, c.f.
fink commander) and in terms of port variants. Also I think the
dependancy tracking will ultimately be more flexible than that of fink.

Fink is cool, but I think Jordan is one of the few people with the
experience (FreeBSD ports), and the skill (along with Landon and Kevin)
to bring something even better to the table. We'll see.

(including a version with joe's experimental libapreq stuff). Only the
