writing accents in LaTeX

2009-09-19 Thread Justin Harford

Hi all

Just felt like posting this. it is possible to easily write LaTeX
documents in Spanish and other languages where accents, tildes and
other things are used. I know for Spanish that to do this, you type
in the preamble

\usepackage[spanish]{babel}
\uselanguage{spanish}
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}

Then yu must save your document in a utf8 encoding and then you can
have your accents show up in your document output without having to do
code. Much better if you want to spellcheck and listen to the docs
read out to you with the beautiful infovox ivox voices.

Regards
Justin Harford

SnowLeopard and Eclipse

2009-09-19 Thread Mitchell Smith
Hi,

I just upgraded my work Macbook to SnowLeopard and discovered a bit of a
problem with the Eclipse IDE (www.eclipse.org).

I should start of by saying that I am using the Carbon build because I find the
Cocoa build a bit unresponsive with VoiceOver.
A good example of this is when using the Cocoa version, try creating a new Java
class, the page that appears asking for the package, class name, checkboxes for
abstract and final, etc, as you tab around the page there is a definite delay
between pressing tab and VoiceOver announcing where you have landed. I'm not
entirely sure of the cause of this, but I have heard reports of the screen
taking a while to redraw so maybe this is a non visual symptom of the same
problem.

So back to the carbon build, I unpacked the latest Eclipse Classic 3.5 on a
fresh install of SnowLeopard 10.6.1 and launched it. I hit control + option +
m to bring up the menu bar and was met with a bleep. It appears that this
standard keyboard shortcut cannot be used to reach the menu bar in Eclipse,
even though this works with the exact same version of Eclipse on Leopard
10.5.8. I also tried this on earlier developer builds of SnowLeopard with no
problem, so this is a recent issue.
Before I go ahead and file a bug with Apple, I was wondering if anyone has
encountered this same issue.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Mitch

SnowLeopard and the Dock

2009-09-19 Thread Mitchell Smith
Hi,

A feature that I frequently used in Leopard seems to no longer be available in
SnowLeopard.

I like to put commonly used applications in the Dock for quick access, for me
this means things like Adium, Terminal and VMWare Fusion.

In Leopard after launching an app I used to be able to down-arrow on it's dock
item and select Keep in Dock or Open at Logon, however I no longer seem to be
able to do this.

I have noticed for pre-existing Dock items such as Photo Booth I can up-arrow
on them and under options I can select Remove from Dock, however up-arrow
doesn't seem to do anything on newly opened applications.

Has anyone found a work around for this yet?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Cheers,

Mitch

hidden now but still there!

2009-09-19 Thread Simon Cavendish
Hello,

Under Snow Leopard in the Dock, once you land on the icon of the
application you wish to change features for, press vo+shift+m and the
menu will open for you. You will hear a characteristic sound. The menu
has somewhat changed in that you get open submenu and then you need
to expand it with arrow key and there you have yur usual options.

Best wishes, Simon

Requesting help with creating a new group in Address Book with SL

2009-09-19 Thread Brett Campbell

Hello,

I'm trying to create a new group in my address book for the first time
using Snow Leopard. I can't seem to figure it out. When I select
create new group, a group titled Unknown group appears in the groups
table. I have selected rename group from the edit menu, but nothing
seems to happen. I've hit enter and interacted with the Unknown
group, but I can't change the name like a file or folder.
In leopard, when creating a new group, a dialogue appeared with a edit
box for the name along with an OK button.
The funny thing is that It's now simple as can be to create a smart
group in the address book. The problem here is that the smart groups
aren't syncing to my iPhone with Mobile Me.
I'm hoping someone can give this a try and point me in the correct
direction

Thanks,

Brett

Using voice over during a call on iphone.

2009-09-19 Thread Tony Bernedal

Hi all.
I have looked around the webb but can't find answer to my ipone question.
I have used the iphone for a couple of days and so far no problem.
But a question. How do I activate voice over during a call? I red
somewhere that you can flick two fingers upwards to get v o speaking
but that didn't work.
I need v o during calls so I can navigate the phone keypad so I for
example can use tone controled systems.
Any Idea?
And when I'm at the keybord, does anyone know of a good skin or case
to use with the Iphone? I'm afraid dropping it so I want some skin or
case that makes it little more easy to hold.
But so far I like it.
Regards Tony

You will then be able to press the keypad button to actifvate the keypad.

If you have the latest upgrade on your phone, VO will remember the volume, and
you will only have to do this once.

Regards Tony

question about unread in status column in mail

2009-09-19 Thread Christina

Hello list,

Is there a way to get voiceover in mail to read unread in the status
column? Voiceover just says blank unless I replied to the message.
If I'd replied to a message then voiceover lets me know, other wise,
it says blank.

Thanks so much,
Christina

Re: question about unread in status column in mail

2009-09-19 Thread Barry Hadder

Hello again,

If the preview pain is on, the message is marked as read when you move
focus over it. You can turn cursor tracking off and just move the vo
cursor over the message, then you will hear the status as unread.
There is also a way to turn off the preview pain, but I don't remember
off the top of my head where to click.

Re: question about unread in status column in mail

2009-09-19 Thread Christina

Thanks. I understand what you are saying about the preview pane and
messages being marked as read. However, I'm still confused a little
about how to get voiceover to let me know if a message is read or
unread. I do not have mouse cursor following the voiceover cursor.
However, voiceover continues to say blank and I know there is a
graphic or symbol that indicates the mail is unread. I know this
from sighted help and also zooming the voiceover cursor as large as I
can get it. I do not like to rely on my limitted vision though as it
is very time consuming and sometimes I still need sighted help and I
prefer to do it on my own. :) I hope what I'm saying makes sense. :)

Thanks for any help or thoughts,
Christina

Re: sluggish composng of mail

Thanks, that command worked to turn zoom off. I feel your
frustration. It is quite frustrating to feel like I'm typing in mud

RE: Using voice over during a call on iphone.

2009-09-19 Thread Donna Goodin

Hi Tony,

Once you get the voice volume adjusted, you only have to move the phone away
when you want to do something on the screen. The problem is that when the
phone is next to your face, the screen becomes inactive. If you think about
it, you'll se the logic here. If the screen were active while you were holding
the phone next to your face, you could end up launching all kinds of stuff
while you were on the call!
Cheers,
Donna

Oh, as many of my DVDs contain television episodes, I need an app

I have such an app on my Windows computer but it is not Jaws

I would appreciate any help on this.

I don't like Fring: Any other accessible skype clients for Iphone?

2009-09-19 Thread John J Herzog

Hi all,
I figured out why my Ipod touch is not going to sleep. Apparently,
when I turn Fring notifications on, it interferes with the devices
ability to remain sleeping. The down side of this, is that I do not
get sounds for incoming messages, calls, etc.
Are there any other accessible ways in which to use skype, AIM, etc.
on the Ipod?
Thanks,

VO on Nano: Can it Read the menus also?

I've got Vo on the new 5th gen nano working ok but it only reads
what's currently playing. In the prefs for this nano I have checked
Use VoiceOver and use system Speech. It won't let me check use menus
