Re: An apparently accessible alternative to flash.

2010-11-06 Thread Ruud Bemelmans
Pretty nice. I had to struggle with it for a bit to get it working
properly, but now it does and I like it. On general principals I don't
want websites to bother me with flash, but having the option to play the
flash that was hidden before, is a definite plus IMO.

Re: An apparently accessible alternative to flash.

2010-11-06 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi,

Yep that combination of click2flash and html5 video extension is pretty nifty.
I've though altogether ridden myself of flash and any additional plugin to
manage flash as a blind user.

The html5 extension still works fine, and i found an flash audio player html5
converter as well.

Here is the link:

http://shauninman.com/archive/2010/11/05/html5audio_safari_extension

This one works for wordpress players as well as tumbler ones.

Hope this helps

Re: An apparently accessible alternative to flash.

2010-11-06 Thread Justin Ekis
Hi David,
I'm not sure what you mean about the extension stopping accessible flash from
playing. On the mac there is no such thing as accessible flash. But yes, as I
explained it stops all flash from loading until you give it permission to load.
Just do a vo space on the placeholder, interact with the video element
controller toolbar and you have full access to the play button and all of the
other controls.

Re: iMac VS Mac Mini

2010-11-06 Thread Scott Howell
James,

There is a significant difference between the Mini and iMac in terms of
available options for the processor. The selection of the processor will be
based on the need. If you do a lot of audio editing, you will want more
horsepower or if you run a number of VMs. If you do a lot of video editing,
then you would of course want a lot more horsepower. However, if you primarily
surf the web, e-mail, watch some videos, listen to music, books, etc., you are
correct that you do not need as much horsepower.

Re: Skype 5 beta and conference calling - this is what i've found so far

2010-11-06 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi,
The /add method is good but iffy. If you don't know the exact user name of
someone, you could end up having someone who's not even in your contact list
participating in your convo. The thought is scary enough that i don't touch
that function at all.
With the "add people" button function, at least i know who end up in my convos.

2010-11-06 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi!

You know, a thought occurred to me again.

I know that if you are in a chat and want to add people, you hit
COmmand-Shift-A, find the person in the list of the new window, then hit enter
once. Then, if you hit enter again without moving anything, it usually brings
them into the call. I wonder if the same method works from a call currently in
progress.

So, I went ahead and tried. It did add someone into the call, actually. Now,
what hapens though is that it will tell you that you created a separate
conference. Regardless, it seems to do what you want, so that sounds a bit
misleading to me.

Also, you are told you hang up, when you actually don't.

Nic

Re: Extra Text Being Spoken

2010-11-06 Thread Jeff Berwick
Actually, upon further inspection, it would appear that I've changed some
setting that makes numbers, and possibly capital words, spell individually.
So, in my inbox, I get a message like 8 8 5 messages 5 1 unread instead of 886
messages and 51 unread.

There must be a setting to fix this, right?

Okay, it is now back to normal. Found an option in the general verbosity

This can be a nice feature won for partially sighted folks as when
they hover the mouse over a specific paragraph, the computer will
 speak that text.

The iMac offers more options in terms of processing power and hard drive
space. Of course you do get the monitor included. My advice is this:
 1. Determine what you need. In other words, what are you going to use the
machine for and plan this out over at least three years as a minimum.
UNless your one of those folks who upgrade frequently, you want to get a
machine that will grow with you and I tend to keep machines forever, but
if I consider upgrading, it usually is on a three to five year cycle
depending on what my family needs. :) Yeah, I'm really nice, I give them
 the well tested machines. :)
 2. Price out more than one option. For example, if you are leaning toward
a MIni, but you want more drive space and ram, do the math and see if it
would make more sense to go with an iMac versus a Mini.

Of course others will have different opinions, but hope this helps.

Yes, even my 2 year old mini, which only has a 2 GHZ processor runs everything

2010-11-06 Thread James Malone
Oh ok. Thanks for the correction there, because I was only basing my
experiences I've had with playing around with an iMac. But then it makes more
sense, because the iMac is really the power unit. I can't say I've done much
audio editing on the Mac as yet, but I'm looking in to it.

Re: [Bulk] Re: accessible flash eextention blocks youtube videos heelp!

2010-11-06 Thread Justin Ekis
Hi Ray,

Checking "load video player automatically" doesn't necessarily defeat the
purpose. The next option determines what the video player will do once it has
been loaded. You have 3 options, do not buffer, start buffering, or start
buffering and begin playback. I chose to start buffering. Now the video is
ready to be played should I decide to do so. This removes a step from the
process, you don't have to click on the flash placeholder first to load up the
player.

Hope this helps.

ProTools 9: Bring Your Own Interface

2010-11-06 Thread Kevin Shaw
Greetings,

ProTools 9 appears to be out. Check out this YouTube video for a quick demo:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukwEyzFSQD0

Here is the information from the Avid website.

http://www.avid.com/US/products/Pro-Tools-Software

the key selling feature of ProTools 9 is that it no longer requires DigiDesign
approved hardware to work. In fact, it's possible to run it using CoreAudio in
OS X. So, use your own audio interface or your computer's sound card.

There is no mention of changes to accessibility, but I'm sure Slau and others
may have news on improvements and the like. If it's at least accessible as
8.0.4, then I say keep on rocking.

Enjoy,
Kevin

Re: GMail filters and Apple Mail

2010-11-06 Thread Darcy Burnard
Hi. Personally how I like to do gmail filters is to put all the criteria in
the "has the words" field. This is mainly because I like to filter on the
replyto field whenever possible.
So when I set up my filter for this list, I put
"replyto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com" in the has words field. This is of
course without the quotes.
Filtering on the replyto field ensures that even if someone sends a message to
Mac Visionaries with cc, the message will still be filtered correctly.
Not all mailing lists have a replyto filed however. Apple's automator users
list for example does not. In that case, to make my filter I put the following
in the has the words field.
to:automator-us...@lists.apple.com OR cc:automator-us...@lists.apple.com

2010-11-06 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi Dave and all,

I htink you have to go in to the preferences and then VO space on extensions.
Then check the box to turn the extension on. This happened to me too once I
enabled extensions, Click to Flash installed and is working perfectly. .

This is a safari extension called click to flash. Apparently it started
out as a way to replace any flash content with a placeholder element. All
flash would be disabled unless you click on this to enable selected
 content.

Anyway, at some point they developed a feature that replaces flash videos
with an html5 alternative whenever possible. For example, this works on
pages that contain embedded videos from sites like youtube and vimeo.

I've tried this on a few sites, and it is totally accessible. Where the
video would be, you instead get an element that Voiceover identifies as

accessible click to flash

2010-11-06 Thread Nektarios Mallas
Hello all.
I installed this extension, went to system prefferences and enabled extensions.
Now when I go to youtube, I click on a video. The site comes up but the video
is not playing. I think that's good.
I am not able to find the controls for play stop etc.
Is this bar within the html content? I have searched through out the page and
can't find it.
Please help.

Re: iMac VS Mac Mini

2010-11-06 Thread Austin Seraphin
Hi. I had the same choice. I opted for the iMac, because I plan to do audio
editing. If you just want to do general tasks and want to spend less then go
for the Mac Mini. If you think you'll want more power and don't mind spending a
little more you might want to consider the iMac. The Mac Mini just has the main
unit, no keyboard, monitor, etc. so for example you will probably want to buy
an Apple long keyboard and a magic trackpad, I'd recommend that for either
actually, so you will want to figure things like that in. The iMac has
everything you need, you can just plug it in, wait until you hear the welcome
sound, then hit command-fn-f5 and enjoy!

Re: accessible click to flash

2010-11-06 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi Nektarios,

I discovered that on Youtube, you have to add youtube.com to the white list of
accepted sites within Click to Flash under extensions. I did that, and the
videos play, but I can't seem to find the video element controller on that
page. I can find it however if I go to my friend's wordpress blog. The videos
on his site were previously inaccessible to me, the clickable links were not
showing up under VoiceOver. Now they are, and I can just hit VO space and play
the videos. When I do it from his site, I can see a little toolbar that says
Video element controller. I cannot see this on Youtube. I'm unsure why, but I
wanted to answer your post. I hope I have been of some help.

Musically,
Allison

Re: Skype 5 beta and conference calling - this is what i've found so far

2010-11-06 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi!

Also, further to conference calling and joining through the Skype interface.

I dare say I know how to do this, however, it is very bug and does not work.

It is one of those logical things that hit you on the head when you consider
it. I'm sure you all know how Skype does everything by conversation views by
now, and as such, everyone gets their own conversation. Well, this concept
applies here as well. All you do is simply move to their conversation in the
"Sources" table when they call you, then do Vo-Shift-M to bring up their menu.
You will find a "Join call" option, which is supposed to bring them into the
other current call that you have in progress.

However, what it does is call the same function similar to answer, so it puts
any calls on hold and picks it up instead. I'm sure this is a bug, as there
would be no explanation for the label otherwise.

Nic

When in a conference press the "add people" button or hit command+shift+a,
this pops up an edit box. Type a name or parts of a name and wait a second
or so. Voiceover will say "skype has new window". Ignore that, it's a list
of available names matching your search, but you can't do anything with
it. Now hit your down arrow once. Vo will beep and announce the partial
name you just typed. I don't know why you have to do this, but at least in
my case, if i didn't do it, it didn't work. Maybe it goes to the end of
the partially typed word. Now, hit return and press the down arrow once.
This won't give any feedback but it actually selects the name from the
list i spoke of earlier. Now hit return and the person you wanted should
be added. What we would need is for Voiceover to give feedback as we move
in the list of available names, which it doesn't do at this current time.
What would also be great is if we could add a caller that rings in to an
existing conference, a thing i haven't seen in this version.
Now i just wonder if the steps i outlined above can be applied during an
 actual call, anyone who knows?
 Hope this helps.

Did you provide feedback to skype about this in the form found under the skype
menu? I've been doing that for allthe bugs and stuff I've found.

Take care.

Hi!

yeah, I already did. I just wanted to know if anyone had found this, and if
anyone had come to the same logical solution on how to perform that part in
Skype about joining calls. Also, I'm hoping people will actually try it so more
can provide feedback. That way, it's probably more likely to get noticed.

one would think they surely will heed what we say and fix these things prior

usually brings them into the call. I wonder if the same method works from
 a call currently in progress.

So, I went ahead and tried. It did add someone into the call, actually.
Now, what hapens though is that it will tell you that you created a
separate conference. Regardless, it seems to do what you want, so that
sounds a bit misleading to me.

Also, you are told you hang up, when you actually don't.

going for the logic pro training with private tutor for rendering all buttons accessible

2010-11-06 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi lists,

Just wanted to let you guys know that i am taking the logic pro 3 day intensive
training course at a local apple center, and got a few hours off with a private
trainer to label all buttons, figure some ways either via items lists or 3rd
party applicato=applications to resolve some accessibility issues.

I think there might be no way of scrubbing or looping and editing but i will
definetely get some more skill bases on the rest of the operations on logic
studio.

Crossing my fingers for some good out[otput , and will report back once the
course is done.

Best regards,

Garage band 11 and trimming

2010-11-06 Thread Malthe Jepsen
Hi.
I'm a recent member of this list, so if the topic has already been brought up I
apologize. Searched through parts of the archive, but couldn't find a solution.
How do I go about trimming empty space at the end of garage band songs?
E.G, let's say I've played 10 bars. Unfortunately the recording ends at 15 bars.
I can't seem to move the end of song indicator on the timeline either, unless
I'm doing something wrong.
Best regards, Malthe.

Re: accessible click to flash

2010-11-06 Thread Justin Ekis
Hi Allison,

By adding youtube.com to the whitelist, you are telling click to flash to
enable all flash on the page instead of turning it into accessible html5. You
aren't seeing the video element controller because click to flash is ignoring
youtube and letting it play the videos in flash. So by adding a site to the
whitelist, it is if you don't have the extension installed at all when you
visit the page.

On Nov 6, 2010, at 11:16 AM, Allison Manzino wrote:

Checkbook Pro Questions

2010-11-06 Thread Sarai Bucciarelli
Hi All:
I'm using Checkbook Pro's demo, and I can't figure out a few things.
1. How do you get the balance of all your accounts to read? Sighted people can
see it?
2. Under the account entries table, there is an l and a t with different
totals. What is l and t?
3. When paying a credit card bill, I put the date as November 29; however the
entry isn't showing up in the table of entries, and the balance hasn't changed.
Help?

Hello!

Simply go to the General tab of Mail preferences. You'll see a popup button
that says "New messages sound" where you can choose your own, or leave it. next
to that, there is a checkbox which says "Play sounds for other actions". Make
sure that is checked.

Re: Skype 5

2010-11-06 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi!

No, Mark, you're not. By the way, chat sounds do work even if you don't switch
conversations, as long as you are not in the active Skype window and Skype is
in the background...just to clarify that point.

As for the "@" parameter for retrieving names, that's an oversight by Skype,
since it works for some alerts but not all. Also, concerning the active window
issues...it'd be appropriate to add an option for that, as I personally find it
very inconvenient having to move away from the window just to be notified of a
new chat.

I have of course sent all of these concerns.

Re: Skype 5

2010-11-06 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
I haven't received a chat yet to make any remark on its behavior with the new
Skype. Mostly I get phone calls, as my Skype number is my home number now.
This makes finding the "accept," button, which is also sometimes problematic,
very important, as well as getting my voicemail.

Remapping the left arrow

KeyRemap4MacBook for keyboard remapping [was Re: Remapping the left arrow]

2010-11-06 Thread Esther

Hi Robert,

I haven't tried this myself, but you might try using KeyRemap4MacBook
from:

http://pqrs.org/
Or you can go to the macupdate site if you want to read their comments:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/25141/keyremap4macbook
Note that there are different versions for Snow Leopard and for
earlier versions of Mac OS X (Leopard or Tiger). There's also a review
of this at TUAW:

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/01/05/keyremap4macbook-the-utility-keyboard-lovers-have-dreamed-of/

I picked this up from one of Erik's list posts, although the subject
line was about numpad.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: KeyRemap4MacBook for keyboard remapping [was Re: Remapping the left arrow]

2010-11-06 Thread Esther

Hi Robert,

I meant to add that KeyRemap4MacBook is free, although the web site
has a link if you want to make PayPal donations. It also works for
all keyboards used with the Mac (not just the MacBook). And finally,
you can make application specific keyboard remapped definitions, so
Command+letter shortcuts could be remapped to Control+letter shortcuts
in VMWare Fusion, for example.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Resetting default settings in VoiceOver

2010-11-06 Thread Jenny Wood
Hello all. Wow, so okay. I have absolutely no idea what I did, but apparently
I managed to hit some key combination that modified the way VoiceOver interacts
with the Finder window, as well as Mail. I wish I could provide a better
visual description of what is happening, but I'm afraid I don't quite
understand it myself. Basically, rather than arrowing through the list of
files or folders, I have to tab through the list. My husband, who is sighted,
said it appears as if the cursor is moving from section to section of the
window, as opposed to the next item in the list. However, when VoiceOver is
turned off, things appear to operate as normal. Anyway, assuming nobody has
any suggestions as to what in the world I may have done, and how to fix it, can
anyone perhaps tell me how I might go about resetting my default settings for
VoiceOver? That is, of course, if it can in fact be done. I suspect I must
have pressed some key combination that triggered the change, but I have to
admit it is becoming rather frustrating. I am using a macbookpro, Snow
Leopard. Oh, and if it matters, I currently have my view set to listview,
which is what I typically use...

Thank you so much for any help you can offer!

Jenny

Recording Project

2010-11-06 Thread Kevin Shaw
Greetings again list,

Earlier, Mr. Reeves posted some work he'd done in ProTools using Voiceover to
the list. I may as well join him in posting some of my work. I wanted to wait
until I had my Master's degree in hand and for the band to sign off on the
recordings before I posted this.

My project examined the accessibility of ProTools with VO on the Mac. As part
of the project, I recorded a band and reported on the experience. Here is one
of the five recordings I mixed in the early summer.

Artist: Heartcore
Song Title: Broken Fire
Mixed by: Kevin Shaw
Produced by:James McGreggor, Kevin Shaw
Recorded at:Ryerson University
Mastering: Andy Krehm, Silverbirch Productions, Toronto, Canada

Enjoy.

Ok..I have no clue what you did but OKlol:)anyway, this is what
you do to reset all settings in Voiceover.
Bring up the Voiceover utility (VO-f8 or FN+VO+f8 if you don't have your keys
set to standard.) Then, go to the menu bar (CTRL+f2) then, file, then "reset
all Voiceover preferences. HTH,

Hi Wes,

Thanks for the reply! Well, while I did successfully reset the default
settings in VoiceOver, I was unable to correct the problem. Sigh. In any case,
I am very grateful for your help! I should have known to check the menu bar
inside of the VoiceOver Utilities window, but I suppose I feel so frazzled that
I am not thinking very clearly. :-) There must be something off in Finder or
window settings. I'll keep looking! Oh, I will say this much. Apparently, if
I navigate to the actual list of files or folders, I can choose to interact
with the list and can arrow among the items. Just never had to do this before.

Re: Recording Project

2010-11-06 Thread Kevin Reeves
Sounds great. how much did you feel you were able to accomplish without sighted
assistance? Did you get the producer trying to butt in and do things for you
that he didn't feel you could do successfully, or did they just leave you
alone? I'm always curious to know how blind producers/engineers are perceived
by their sighted counterparts as they work day to day on projects side by side.
If you have any pro tools questions, feel free to hit me off list. I'm always
glad to help.

Re: Resetting default settings in VoiceOver

2010-11-06 Thread Jenny Wood
Thanks, Wes! Looks like the Keyboard shortcuts in the System Preferences is
still set to allow access to everything. I also browsed through many of the
other various settings, just to see if anything else jumped out at me. Didn't
make any changes though. With regard to the problem I am having, I am
apparently unable to expand a collapsed folder simply by hitting right-arrow.
When I do press right-arrow, VoiceOver begins reading additional information
about the folder, such as the date it was last modified, size, etc. I don't
know, I am still trying to figure out exactly what is and is not happening at
this point. :-)

Re: Resetting default settings in VoiceOver

Holy cow!!! You nailed it! I have no idea why this didn't occur to me. LOL
As soon as I read your message, I remembered that I had used quicknav earlier
today, and apparently it didn't get turned off. I don't use quicknav very
often at this point, so I guess that might explain why it didn't just jump to
the forefront of my mind. It makes perfect sense now. LOL Although, I am a
little surprised it did not get disabled when I restored the defaults within
VoiceOver.
In any case, thank you, everyone, for your help! Your suggestions always mean
a great deal to me, because I always learn so much more about my mac while in
the midst of troubleshooting. Yay, happy day!

Your welcome. :) I always happy to help wherever I can. The reason I new was
because I've done the same thing that you did countless times. I don't use it
either, never have, never wull.

Re: selecting individual pictures within i-photo:hello all:

2010-11-06 Thread Maxwell Ivey Jr.
Hello; Here is how I do it. First make sure iphoto isn't set to
automatically import photos. Next create a folder for your pictures.
I have a photos folder on my desktop. When I want to do a project in
iphoto< i start by deleting past imports. Then i choose import on the
menu and browse through until i find the picture or pictures I'm
looking for. I select them and press accept or import or whatever
the button says. then in the most recent import you will have these
photos. I use iphoto often to creat slide shows or to make albumns
for uploading to facebook. i hope this helps. take care, Max

Does anyone have experience with a product called radio shark

2010-11-06 Thread Justin Ekis
Hi ALl,

I'm going to break one of my own rules here. I rarely write to a list to ask if
something is accessible, I'll just download it and try the demo. On the mac,
your chances are quite high that it will work with voiceover. In this case
however, the software is included as part of a product, and there's no way to
try it out first.

Radio Shark is an AM/FM radio receiver that you control with your computer. It
can also record the radio for future listening. I'd like to have this since a
few local stations do not stream online. Also if they do stream, they shut the
stream down during baseball games or other programming where their contract
requires this.

So I'm wondering if anyone has used this. If so, is the included software
accessible?

For anyone else that wants to investigate, the web page for this product is at
the below link, but you can get it for less at amazon.com.

Thanks,

Justin

Re: Does anyone have experience with a product called radio shark

2010-11-06 Thread Esther

Hi Justin,

I haven't used this product, but I remember that Cheryl posted about
using this on the list a long time ago (in early 2006, to be exact).
Here's her post from the old mailing list (before the list moved to
Google Groups) at the Mail Archive:

http://www.mail-archive.com/discuss%40macvisionaries.com/msg02917.html

If you read down the thread, both Cheryl and Scott Howell commented on
this. I think there wasn't an accessibility problem but there might
have been some issues with reception back then. Haven't heard about
this product since then, so any improvements would not have been
remarked on. And Cheryl's no longer subscribing to this list, but
she's on the viphone list. You'll just have to ask around.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Does anyone have experience with a product called radio shark

2010-11-06 Thread Justin Ekis
Hi Esther,

Thanks for the information. If the software was accessible back then, I
wouldn't expect that they changed it much with the newer radio shark2. The new
model sounds like it's mostly just hardware improvements. I'll probably get
this.

Hmm looks like you might need to use image capture then to do the import if it
is from your phone.
