Re: navigation the IPad with VO
Hi Mary: It really is initially a little tricky to find the address bar in the iPad. It helps to orient your hand on the screen from the center/top, about where time is. Right below time is the current address you're in. If you tap this, a "clear text" option will appear just to the right of that address. Once you find and tap that, you can use the keyboard to enter a new destination address. If that doesn't work out, the google searh field is in the upper right quadrant of the screen at the top. I've learned to slow down a lot on the larger screen. The little things that sound like bubbles, or golf swings (ok don't laugh at me.:) are indications that you're passing over something. I've found if I move too fast over these, VO can't get a word in. HTH a little. Mary: I don't know if this will be helpful or not. But, I've found it impossible to mmove apps to differing pages in the same manner as on the iPhone. Re: creating groups in apple mail
This task is actually accomplished in the Address Book application. You will create a group, and then you can add the desired contacts to the group. When composing a message in Mail, you only need to type the name of your group, and the addresses will be added. Creating a new group my be problematic if you're using Snow Leopard. It can be done by turning VoiceOver off, or something like that. There are others on the list better qualified to describe the process. Brett C. Update on SEE Finance
I've been working on setting up SEE Finance. I have 2 accounts with complete transactions from my Quicken files and I'm working on setting up a budget. The purpose of this message is to state how pleased I am with the support I've received from Support. I've had regular e-mail assistance, including receiving messages on the weekend from Customer Support. This is crucial, as conceptually, there is a learning curve here. Given the support that has now been built into VoiceOver and the ongoing support that has been provided, I can highly recommend this product. While challenging, I can envision getting to a point where I may be able to abandon Quicken, which given Intuit's poor track record regarding accessibility, would be a pleasure. By the way, at least one individual from the company has been on this list and actually sent me something from the archives to assist me in sorting columns in one of my tables. That in itself speaks volumes. Les -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: navigation the IPad with VO
Another thing i think is a bit tricky is the flicking. Because the pad is so big, or whatever it could be, sometimes a flick left is interpreted as a downward flick. On top of that, you cansuddenly find yourself in a totally different part of the screen than where you want to be, for example you want to find something in the beginning of the screen and suddenly as you flick through the beginning of the screen you're at the end of the screen several pages down. Anyone recognize this? 17 jan 2011 kl. 20.56 skrev Mary Otten: > Hi all, > > I've been using an IPod touch for the better part of a year and have gotten > use to the gestures and the screen size, pluses and minuses, e.g. cramped > space versus more easily pinpointed specific locations. A tutorial suggestion was Re: Garageband tutorial 3.
Hi there. Have you been experimenting with adjusting keys of a loop so that one loop goes in one key and another part goes in another? I'm thinking about making a loop based project, but the problem is that no loops use the chords i want, either there are chords that are almost there but not quite, or they don't fit at all so you must make your own chord progressions. What i sorta wonder is if it's possible to make loops with different chord progressions then copy or move those loops elsewhere in the timeline or do you have to do all chord progressions yourself as you go through loops? Wouldn't that be a cool idea for a tutorial? /Krister 17 jan 2011 kl. 20.18 skrev Ricardo Walker: > Hi Folks, > > Part 3 of my audio tutorial on Garageband is up. Re: moving apps on an IPad
Hi Mary, The default apps that come with the iPad show up on the first page, and I think that if you buy new apps they may show up on the second page with iOS 4.2 (on both the iPad and other iDevices). However, I haven't had any problems putting apps onto the first page of my iPad. With the iPad you should be able to put 6 apps into the dock -- which is more than the default configuration has. So what happens if you move an app from page 2 into the dock, and then switch to page 1 and move it up from the dock? This sounds like you'll have fun, although you might have some regrets when the announcement for the second generation iPad comes out! Oh, and for you as a language buff, download the "iTranslate - free Translator" by Sonico GmbH, which is only for the iPad: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/itranslate-free-translator/id397730127?mt=8 There are included voices to speak the text (original or translated) for English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. These are the Loquendo voices. The Russian voice is the female voice (Olga, not Dmitry), but quite good. There's no counterpart to the iPad version on the iPhone or iPod Touch, and the iPad version doesn't have the current bug for the iTranslate and iTranslate Pro apps on the iPhone and iPod Touch, where the language isn't announced on the picker wheel as you move it, but can only be checked when you move back to the main page. Re: moving apps on an IPad
Hi Donna, I've used methods one and two from your message, resorting to the method 2 involving the dock as a last resort, because it is kind of a hastle. We'll have to try that on the IPad. and thanks for the additional method for moving apps to a new page. I've found that the regular method for dragging off the page sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, but I was surprised when my sighted partner had the problem. I gather there is a way you can use ITunes to move apps around if you can see and mentioned that to him, but he didn't try it yet, and of course, since it isn't accessible, its of no use to me. mary Mary Otten motte...@gmail.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. navigation the IPad with VO
Hi all, I've been using an IPod touch for the better part of a year and have gotten use to the gestures and the screen size, pluses and minuses, e.g. cramped space versus more easily pinpointed specific locations. I played around a bit with an IPad yesterday and found the big gaps in unoccupied real estate somewhat of a problem. For instance, when in the app store, I was not able to locate the search field to double tap and activate editing. I know right where it is on the IPod and looked around the top of the screen without success on the IPad. Similarly with the address bar to type in a url in Safari. Once you have a page open and want to type in a url, I assumed the address bar would be near the top, but I didn't find it. People have said that browsing on the pad is a much better experience than with the IPod, and it has been demonstrated on podcasts, so I was eager to give it a shot, since IPod web browsing is kind of laborious on complex pages. Any hints on these specifics or more general ones on adjusting up from IPod to IPad will be most apprediated. Re: moving apps on an IPad
Hi Mary, I've been wrestling with this same issue on my iPod Touch over the last 24 hours, and may have some answers for you. These tips are all VO-based. Method 1: Double-Tap and hold on the app you want to move. Keep your finger there till you hear the iPad say "Moving X" where X is the name of your app. Then drag your finger slowly to the edge of the screen, as though you want to pull the app off the screen. To go forward a page, pull the app to the right, to go backward, pull it to the left. You should hear VO chirp, which is your indication that you've moved the app to another page. Then press the home key to get back to the normal screen. Now, I've found that this works wonderfully for moving around the same page, but often not so well for moving from page to page. So here are methods 2 and 3, method 3 compliments of Apple Accessibility. Method 2: Clear out one position in the dock. Then move the app to the dock, scroll to the page where you want the app, and then move the app out of the dock onto the new page. Sounds convoluted, but so far it has proven to be the easiest and fastest method Method 3: Quoted from a message from Apple Accessibility: "One thing to keep in mind is that to change pages, it does require that the app go off screen to the left or right. If you find that you have your finger to the far edge of the display and do not hear VoiceOver indicate you have changed pages.: Lift your finger to drop the app at the current position, you would want to make sure that you are not on a folder, then single finger double tap and hold on the opposite side of the screen. You should hear VoiceOver say “Moving Photos” and then drag your finger to the opposite side of the screen. This should pick up the app again and move it far enough off screen that you will change pages. When you are finished remember to press the Home button to exit edit mode." I hope one of these is helpful to you. Re: pages and the Ipad
The documents are transferred through iTunes. One first imports the documents into iTunes, and then when the device is connected, transfer the documents to the device. Following this procedure, an additional step is required. When Pages is open, go to documents, and select import documents. There will be a list of the documents that were transferred, and they have to be selected, and imported, within the device one by one. It took a little practice for me to feel comfortable with the process. Brett C. There has been talk on this list about the zaggmate keyboard and how some of its keys, notably the escape key, don't do what analogous keys do on the Apple keyboard. Re: Saving RTF as Text
Hi Jane, TextEdit works in two modes: plain text and rich text format. In order to switch from the rich text format of the .rtf file, you need to use the shortcut Command-Shift-T to make this plain text before saving as .txt, or else navigate to the Format menu on the TextEdit menu bar and select the same option associated with this shortcut. Command-Shift-T will also switch plain text format to rich text. HTH. Four and Five Finger Gestures was Re: Apple to Remove the Home Button from Future iPads and iPhones?
Scott's right. According to everything I've read, the new gestures work with the iPad IOS, not iPhone 4.3. One article that was sent to this list specifically said that they do not work with the iPhone. Other articles simply don't mention the iPhone when discussing these gestures. Best, Marc - Original Message - From: "Scott Howell" To: Sent: Monday, January 17, 2011 6:17 AM Subject: Re: Apple to Remove the Home Button from Future iPads and iPhones? Keep in mind this is only a rumor and there is little to support the assertion at this point. I also do not believe the five finger gesture would be used on the iPhone. I recall the article I read indicated these gestures would be only for the iPad, but this is from memory. Re: Daisy readers
Hello Zack, For the Mac, there are two Daisy readers: Olearia, which is free; and ReadHear which has more features but it costs. For the iPhone and iPod Touch, there are also two Daisy players: DaisyWorm which costs €2.99 (I don't know how much it costs in dollars); and InDaisy which costs €21.99. Hey Krister, Thanks for the idea. Once I figure out how to turn my trackpad on again, so that I can work with gestures, I can give this a try. It might work. How do you turn on the trackpad? Re: Accessibility of Hotspot Shield
Hi. Pardon my ignorance, but what is Voxkeys? No, I didn't want to write to the developer before proving definitively that was a Voice Over problem, not a "Mike" problem. :) As far as people in the States using Hot Spot Shield to listen to British content, it apparently won't work. The server that assigns IP addresses apparently uses American IPs. HTH Mike On 17,Jan,2011, at 4:45 PM, Chris Moore wrote: > Maybe this is something Brian Smart could look at with Voxkeys. Re: safari question
Hi, the best way to deal with this is to go to the view menu and disable book marks. Actually, at least for me, a common practice is to go to the view menu in all my applications and hide as much as possible, such as tool bars, book mark bars, etc. It's extra clutter to navigate through, and can sometimes draw the focus away from the main area of the application. Hey Mike. Do you by chance have either a magic trackpad or a trackpad built-in on your Mac? And i mean the modern ones that can do multi jestures? If so go to the sync menu by pressing vo+m twice in rapid succession and route the mouse there (vo+cmd+f5). Now place your finger on the trackpad and move it carefully and slowly over the pad. group mode was Re: the acsesability of the latest verssion of adium??
Uh, well it really depends a lot on the person who is browsing and the sites they look at. Some sites actually to not display information properly in one or the other mode. For an example of a site that doesn't really display properly in dom mode, see http://www.erik-burggraaf.com. This site displays all it's information properly in group, but leaves things out in dom. Group mode vastly improves navigation on sites driven by lists and tables. It also makes for a great way to skip over useless or duplicate information on large web pages, especially if they have no headings for the purpose. It's fantastic for reading the articles that often get posted here because it groups the article together and the adds together, so you can ignore the ads and read the article. It does take a lot of practice though, and I have seen people get hopelessly lost, especially elderly people. It's not for everyone or every site, but on many sites it's a huge advantage. Plus I use the item chooser a whole lot. I do occasionally look at a whole page, but very seldom. It just takes to much time, even at 400 words per minute. Accessibility of Hotspot Shield
Hello everyone, I recently ran across a program that I really like, and some of you, especially if you are outside the U.S. and want to listen to US content on the Web may like it, too. The program is called Hotspot Shield, and it makes your IP invisible to computers around you. This is a good program to have if you travel and don't want people stealing sensitive information that you are sending from your computer through a WIFI network. I have both Windows and Mac versions of the program. While I was able to install the Windows version, I encountered several problems with the Mac iteration. 1. The installer was in no way accessible. The only reason I could install the program was because I selected the default options throughout the entire installation process. 2. Thus far, I have not been able to activate either of the two Hotspot Shield features (connect or disconnect) though I know that the program is installed. A friend using a remote desktop application could see that the program's menu options were "hanging out somewhere" on my Mac's screen, but we couldn't find a way to get to them with Voice Over. Has anyone ever successfully used Hotspot Shield in conjunction with Voice Over and if so, how were you able to click on the enable and disable features? If this is of any help, the connect and disconnect options hang out in Windows' system tray. By the way, the program works great, and if I ever wanted to, I would be able to listen to certain radio streams in the States, albeit running under Windows for the time being.. This freeware app got lots of positive coverage on CNN a while back, and I believe that it might be worth checking out. I have posted the link below. In my experience VO has always read the conversation window, as long as dom mode is set. If you change to group then you run into problems. I solved this by making a keyboard commander key to switch between dom and group so I can have group mode for browsing and get dom back for reviewing conversations on adium. Keep in mind this is only a rumor and there is little to support the assertion at this point. I also do not believe the five finger gesture would be used on the iPhone. I recall the article I read indicated these gestures would be only for the iPad, but this is from memory. Re: Working with the Trash with VO
Hi Frank, The trash can be found on the dock. You can get to it by VO D or, control F3. Once in the trash, you can press VO shift M to bring up the context menu and check if their is a move back to location, or something to that effect. Failing that, just copy and paste it back in the folder the deleted item came from. hth Ricardo Walker rwalker...@gmail.com Twitter, Skype, and AIM: rwalker296 Google Voice: 1-646-450-2197 On Jan 17, 2011, at 7:56 AM, Frank Ventura wrote: > Hi can anyone tell me how to open up the trash and move an item out of > it using VO? > Thanks > Frank > > -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups > "MacVisionaries" group. > To post to this group, send email to macvisionaries@googlegroups.com. > To unsubscribe from this group, send email to > macvisionaries+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. > For more options, visit this group at > http://groups.google.com/group/macvisionaries?hl=en. > -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Hi Kawal, Lol. That would only be constructive to those who can't see. And it would only be useful on an iPhone since the other devices don't vibrate. :). I've heard others mention this, and I just don't think its a big deal. Voiceover talks as soon as the IOS loads up anyway. RE: New Group in Address Book
Hello Steve. Just make sure that your IPhone is selected in the sources list. Tab twice and you get a list of tabs to select. Choose the info tab and then tab over to the scroll area and interact with it. Check all of the boxes that you want included in the Synchronization. Stop interacting and synch your IPhone. You only have to do this once. When adding contacts from your IPhone just remember to get into the right group. If you forget to do this, no problem you can copy contacts to the correct group in the address book and synch. Remember that all contacts is a list of all contacts on your IPhone. Remove a contact from this group and it's gone from your IPhone. -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of cougar1...@gmail.com Sent: Sunday, January 16, 2011 2:26 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: New Group in Address Book Hello, I guess I am having a senior moment but I can't seem to find where to configure what to sync in IToons. creating groups in apple mail
I seem to think this was just recently discussed and so if that is the case, please feel free to respond off list. I want to create a group from several of my contacts whom I must write to regularly so that I do not have to type each person's name and can give the group a name. I know how to do this in windows, but have not figured out how to do it in apple mail. Any assistance will be appreciated beyond measure, :) Marlaina 1guide...@gmail.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. safari question
Hi all. When I tab around in Safari or open item chooser, I bump into some stuff that I have no idea why it apears each time. Wow, what a horrid sentence that was, :) Essentially, what is happening is that I am constantly seeing a few of my personally added bookmarks along with a bookmark to apple, wickipedia and others. It is annoying because each time I open item chooser, I have to down arrow through these ten or so items. I'm sorry I'm asking this question without really knowing how to refer to what I want to hide, but how do I get rid of these items so they do not appear? I tried hiding bookmarks but that didn't seem to do anything. Thanks so much for any assistance. Re: the acsesability of the latest verssion of adium??
That bug can still sometimes happen, but the trick is when you look at the conversation window, press VO + End and you should hear the last message that was sent, and if not Adium might say group, just hit VO and right. Of course if you have growl setup (which I don't) you could configure this to read out the messages automatically. Re: :pages export annoyance
Text Edit is great for basic stuff, but the word format it supports is really only rich text format. This is fine for being able to read the contents of a word document but most formatting will be lost. Re: :pages export annoyance
Hello Carolyn, While it's true that TextEdit saves documents in their original format, it isn't a fully-fledged word processor and you can lose important formatting. Headers, for instance, get grouped together at the end of the document, and any styles not supported by TextEdit are lost. This is why I can't use TextEdit in my work as a translator. Pages does a very good job of preserving styles and allows me to create quality documents that I export to MS Word format and which meet my customers' requirements.
