anyone tried eharmony?

2011-01-22 Thread Karen Lewellen

yes, this is on topic lol.
Sort of in the same spirit of Carolin's site question at that place that
made me hungry...honeybaked I think.
What is so amazing about eharmony is that no one has not made them fix
this already. One of the reps told me they have had complaints before, and
yet on one of the critical sections, the in my own words part of the
profile, requires a physical mouse click to submit...no button whatsoever.
I have tried both lynx as in the cat, and e-links which can usually manage
java scripting, but it is a mess. some links work others do not etc.
Does not help that the men they are sending are totally wrong for me lol.
Or maybe I should be glad since I cannot do much at all.
if someone wants to really take a look, I may have to share my log in, do
not mind for the sake of some wisdom, because it is amazing .

I don't think that you can do that with itunes.
If you want to import the video of the dvd, you can use something like
Handbreak to rip it to a suitable format and then import with itunes.

want ITunes for mac and others will want windows and so I need to be able to

Re: Playing DVD's on the Mac help please?

2011-01-22 Thread Mike Arrigo
The dvd player that comes with the mac works really well. Press the space bar
to start play back, you will probably have to press enter at this point to
start the disk, the dvd menu itself does not read, but pressing enter usually
selects the right choice.

Please ignore my previous post. I have found that the free version works for
up to 50 songs. I've purchased the full version and it is amazing! So much
better than my previous method of playing the song in iTunes, capturing it with
Sound Hound and then updating the tags. It has missed about 100 of my songs
but, I'm trying to figure out why.

The key for me was switching to list view and then I could select multiple

Re: I think I need home sharing?

2011-01-22 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Eric,

If I'm understanding you correctly, then the short answer is No. Home Sharing
gives you the ability to share libraries within your subnet. That is, if you
have multiple computers, you can access each computer's library from the other
as well as copy items between them. It can automatically add new purchases to
each library as well.

It is possible also to, for example, maintain one library on one computer, then
simply access that same library from the other without actually needing to
place any media files on the second computer. In this case though, you should
always use the first computer as the computer that you would purchase media on
so that you can maintain which library is complete. There are ways around this
within the Settings but it would be more reliable doing this as I mentioned.

The Home Sharing is not only limited to two computers and although I don't have
a PC in my network, I'm sure that as long as you're using the same iTunes
account, Home Sharing is available between all the machines. I believe the
limit is five machines within one Home Sharing group.

So, I believe that you would still get the message about connecting your iPod
to more than one Library as this is more an iPod thing than a Home Sharing
thing.

HTH.

Re: Accessing full status bar with voiceover?

2011-01-22 Thread Michael Busboom
Dane, are you sure about that command? I hit the VO-M command twice to get to
the system status menu, but entering Ctrl-F8 didn't accomplish anything.

I have this program called Hot Spot Shield that hangs out in the System Status
area, and it is, thus far, inaccessible to me. Too bad, because it's a great
program that hides your IP address which can be very useful when you are out in
public. Does the Ctrl-F8 give you better access to this area of the screen
than the traditional VO-M*2?

Take care,

Mike

Re: Victor Stream software for Mac?

2011-01-22 Thread Matthew Campbell

You can do everything with the Victor Reader Stream by hand, the only thing
you can't do is convert from the Victor Reader Streams audio format, that's
what the software does and that's only for Windows.

Now I believe that Humanware have an upgrade package for the Stream
available, this package allows for the recording of audio in other formats
such as Wave so perhaps you may wish to get this? That way you needen't worry
about the software issue at all.

All you need do for the material you want to read is plug the Stream into the
Mac, mac will then recognise the Stream as an external drive.

Copy your material to the Stream and remember that your material should go
into the folders on the Streams Memory card, the Stream treats each folder
differently so read the manual for more details, its built-in to the stream
and can be accessed through the bookshelf.

Humanware OCR Product for the Mac?

2011-01-22 Thread Michael Busboom
Hi. Several months ago, when Humanware's European marketing manager visited me
here in Vienna, he told me that the company would soon be introducing an OCR
product that would work with the Mac. The user would purchase a tripod/camera
that would connect to the Mac through the USB port and pages within a document
would be scanned by taking Snapshots.

The scanning process was very fast, at least under Windows, and I was assured
that a similar system was almost finished for the Mac. If anyone has tried out
the system (I don't even remember what it was called) and would be interested
in sharing their impressions, it would be most helpful.

My best to all,

Mike

Re: anyone tried eharmony?

2011-01-22 Thread Chris Snyder
I tried compatiblepartners.net which is eHarmony's sister site for gay folks.
It uses the same system and same webpage set up as eHarmony. The site is not
the best in terms of accessibility. In particular, when a potential partner
responds to your questions, their answers are not invisible to Voiceover.
Apparently, their answer is in a different color or is checked with some
invisible check box. There are also issues when trying to close or archive a
match. The yes button will only appear once you click the archive or close
link, and if you move your cursor, you lose the yes and no buttons. The whole
thing is rather bizarre. Oh, and I know what you mean about bad matches. I'm a
geek, and they send me people who are...well...anything but. lol
Friendly,
Chris

Fwd: filer: transfering folders from mac to iphone

Thanx allot for your answers,

Onderwerp: filer: transfering folders from mac to iphone

 Hi all,

I was just playing with filer and the filetransfer of the program.

I was wondering if you could also upload files/folders directly from the mac
 on the following way:

 I have don the following:
in safari, I typed: ftp://192.168.1.103:2121 (this ip and port was written in
 the settings of filer)
Then, a new Area was created in the finder.
To open this area, I had to give in my username and password of the user on
 my macbook.
After that, I was logged in successfully.

It seems that I have only read permissions on the files that are stored on my
iphone trough the wifi-network with filer.

Is this the only option or can I force also write permissions on this way?

I also discover now that my mac has no access to the internet anymore while
the network is still active and my Iphone can access the internet trough the

Re: Humanware OCR Product for the Mac?

2011-01-22 Thread erik burggraaf
Humanware is reselling the EyePal from ABISee. I have one here to demo to
clients and plan to add it to my training equipment.

On the videos EyePal seems to be instantaneous. It's not. They obviously did
some serious editing on those promos. I'd say it's between 10 and 15 seconds
per capture. Not slouching along by any means, but not what the promos claim
by a long shot either.
The EyePal has very nice batch scanning features. It converts text to mp3.
It's got braille support in a limited way but they are going to remove it,
since they aren't going to develop it anymore. It comes with scansoft voices
which I find a shame, but other people will quite like depending on your
preference.

On the dark side, the documentation is terrible and contains numerous grammar
errors if not actual spelling mistakes. The braille support is about to die.
The mac version is basically the windows version running in an emulator. The
install is buggy, the performance is slightly degraded, and it's not integrated
with any of the mack features you know and love such as the ability to import
directly to ITunes, the ability to choose voices from your mac speech library,
the ability to navigate with the item chooser and more.

I have to say, I have very mixed feelings about it. To be fair, my demo unit
is the old 3 mpx camera. If I buy my own demo unit it will be the 5 mpx
camera. The price has also come way down. Hopefully it will follow here in
canada. It's really not worth 2 grand. I'm not even sure it's worth $1200
unless you are using the batch scanning features, but it does the job in a
half-baked round about way.

within a document would be scanned by taking Snapshots.

The scanning process was very fast, at least under Windows, and I was assured
that a similar system was almost finished for the Mac. If anyone has tried
out the system (I don't even remember what it was called) and would be

Groups in Address BOok

2011-01-22 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi All,
I'm trying to create a group in Address Book, with limited success. I can't
seem to give it a custom name. Untitled Group isn't particularly
descriptive. The Rename group item in the edit menu doesn't seem to be doing
much good either.
Is this a part of the program which is inaccessible, or am I just missing
something? At this point, I'm just choosing New Group from the file menu and
trying to type.
Best and thanks for any advice,
Zack.

Re: Accessible kindle comes out for windows while Macs don't

The NFB is in on this whole deal. They deliberately work against built in
accessibility so they can keep getting 7 figure payoffs from companies who shal

as hush money and also don't get a cut of the sales where applicable.

This is why cable boxes aren't accessible, why windows doesn't have a real

You could also get an old PC, install linux and simply set up NFS / SAMBA.

Few ideas, hope that helps.

Apple only makes the Keynote Remote app and the Remote app. The first is
for controlling Keynote presentations, the second is for controlling iTunes on

Is this a part of the program which is inaccessible, or am I just missing

Sort of in the same spirit of Carolin's site question at that place that

What is so amazing about eharmony is that no one has not made them fix this
already. One of the reps told me they have had complaints before, and yet
on one of the critical sections, the in my own words part of the profile,
requires a physical mouse click to submit...no button whatsoever.
I have tried both lynx as in the cat, and e-links which can usually manage
java scripting, but it is a mess. some links work others do not etc.
Does not help that the men they are sending are totally wrong for me lol. Or
maybe I should be glad since I cannot do much at all.

Re: Humanware OCR Product for the Mac?

Good for Humanware if they're really going to do something like that but I'm

Re: hebrew voices for VoiceOver

2011-01-22 Thread Esther
Hi Jürgen,

I'm not aware of any Hebrew voices available for either the Mac or the iPhone
(through text to speech). For the Mac, the VoiceOver compatible voices that I
know of that support languages with non-Latin input characters are for Greek,
Russian, and Arabic (from Assistiveware's Infovox iVox voices -- these are the
Acapela group's voices), and Japanese (from a separate DTalker Japanese web
site). The iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad platforms support additional voices,
including some with non-Latin input characters such as Chinese. However, the
iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad does not, as far as I know have a Hebrew voice, although
it will support a Hebrew input keyboard. A few iPhone translation apps will
support spoken reading of languages with non-Latin input which are not even
supported on the iPhone. For example, Trippo VoiceMagix has a spoken voice for
Thai (which is supported for keyboard input, but not for voice), but also for
Hindi (which is not supported for either keyboard input in the Devnagari
script, nor for voice on the iPhone). I don't know of any current iPhone or
iPad apps that support a Hebrew text to speech voice, though.

I'd be interested to learn if any Mac users who run Windows under a virtual
machine like VMWare Fusion use Windows-specific voices to read non-Latin input
text.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: anyone tried eharmony?

2011-01-22 Thread Scott Granados
Heh I wasn't trying to be insensitive just trying to be real.

Honestly, I think you'll have an easier time meeting someone locally with
similar interests while interacting with them than behind a terminal.

I'm glad it worked for you, but for everyone one of you there's hundreds who
have horror stories. That's because contrary to popular beleaf the
interactions online just aren't as based in reality.

I think we as blind people (myself included) can fall in to a rut of staying
behind the terminal to much. Meeting that special someone out and around like
the grocery store, restaurant, dog track, what ever has advantages not the
least of which is you get through that whole uneasiness with blindness thing
right from the get go.

That's my point that and Eharmony doesn't play nice on the net. No harshness
intended.

Hi. Several months ago, when Humanware's European marketing manager

introducing an OCR product that would work with the Mac. The user would

port and pages within a document would be scanned by taking Snapshots.

The scanning process was very fast, at least under Windows, and I was
assured that a similar system was almost finished for the Mac. If anyone
has tried out the system (I don't even remember what it was called) and
would be interested in sharing their impressions, it would be most helpful.

Is Voiceover supposed to automatically save graphic labels?

2011-01-22 Thread Victor Tsaran
Hello all,
I was just playing with graphics labeler with Voiceover in XCode and
noticed that after I reopened the program, all the labels were gone.
Is that how this feature of Voiceover supposed to work? Is there a
shortcut key I am missing to save those labels or is XCode perhaps
changing the graphic IDs on me?

Thanks for any input.
Victor

Re: Accessible kindle comes out for windows while Macs don't

2011-01-22 Thread Mary Otten
Yes, publishers have the right to sell audio books. But the fact that many
books with tts enabled are also available in audio format casts a serious doubt
on this line of reasoning. And others not available in audio form sometimes
have tts disabled. It looks totally arbitrary. And while I'm sure you might
find the occasional sighted person who would do as you suggested with tts, the
number of such people must be quite small, based on the reaction of the average
sighted person to speech synthesis. You can always find exceptions, but they
prove nothing.

BTW, for anybody who cares for a blatant example of inconsistency, for those
who suppose that the reason Random House isn't dealing with Apple has to do
with voice over, please explain why their forthcoming release of the final book
in the Earth's Children series, which you won't find on IBooks, is available in
audio form and on Kindle with tts enabled. This is probably boing to be a big
seller, because this is such a famous series. If worry over audio sales was the
deal, why does the Kindle page for this book say tts enabled? There are other
Random House high profile offerings that follow this same pattern.

Re: Accessing full status bar with voiceover?

2011-01-22 Thread William Windels
Hi Ricardo,
thanx for your podcast about this problem, it works!
But, on my system , control+f8 isn't working also (f-functions are done without
fn).
And about the settings in navigation of the vo-menu:
normally the mouse-cursor was set to ignore the voiceover-cursor so , for this,
I have set it to follow the vo-cursor.

I know that I have troubles with braille when I set this option to move
vo-cursorbut I don't know if move vo-cursor can be a default setting without
having problems in other situations/programs with vo and/or braille?

Thanx for your answer,

best regards,

I tried compatiblepartners.net which is eHarmony's sister site for gay
folks. It uses the same system and same webpage set up as eHarmony. The site
is not the best in terms of accessibility. In particular, when a potential
partner responds to your questions, their answers are not invisible to
Voiceover. Apparently, their answer is in a different color or is checked
with some invisible check box. There are also issues when trying to close or
archive a match. The yes button will only appear once you click the archive
or close link, and if you move your cursor, you lose the yes and no buttons.
The whole thing is rather bizarre. Oh, and I know what you mean about bad
matches. I'm a geek, and they send me people who are...well...anything but.
lol

off the shelf vs custom was Re: Humanware OCR Product for the Mac?

2011-01-22 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi Scott,

I think you would have to be numb not to be getting excited about off the shelf
products right now. There's the Iphone/ITouch, apple computers, developments
in Android, rockbox MP3 players, and new stuff coming every day, especially in
terms of enhancements to what we've already got. The high functionality and
low price point are astounding. I tend to take it on a case by case basis
though. Everyone's need is so different. I love my rockbox sansa E270, but
when I show it to clients, some of them their 80-year-old fingers are just too
swollen and clumsy for the small control surface.

I've got a few seniors who've really taken to their mac computers, but when it
comes to scanning, the off the shelf packages just don't have it. The price
point is great, the results are accurate, but a 70-year-old guy looking for
some ott to read his mail is just not going to be bothered futzing with scanner
compatibility or scripting a sequence so that the three programs he needs to
have working together come through for him. It's just not happenin. I'd
handle it for them, but by time they get to me, they usually already have their
kit, and if the scanner isn't compatible well that's that. If you give them
something like the Kurzweil 1000 or the Eyepal, they can just walk up, place a
document, hit the button, and get the info, which is what they need it to do.
If I had a transcription service there's no way I'd be without an EyePal.
Despite my reservations the product does what it's supposed to.

Last year I had a client who was really interested in macs, and I would have
loved to put her in front of a macbook for good. Unfortunately, she worked
from home, and her company had spent $150 per hour on 10,000 lines of jaws
scripting to make their custom software work. How can I really recommend that
lady switch. She is totally locked in unless she quits that job or they
totally overhall the company systems or something. There's just no way.

Fortunately we have a funding system here to provide expensive kit to people
who can't afford it. Unfortunately the system is completely corrupt and you
need to do all kinds of madness to get the equipment that's right for you. All
to many people simply take what they are offered and then find out later they
would have preferred something else. But I think my biggest complaint with the
proprietary AT manufacturers is not so much the high price point. Naturally
I'd like to see that come down so that people could afford it and so that
thieves can't steel as much from unwary blind people. My beaf is what I
perceive to be a lack of respect for that pricepoint, a lack of value for
money. Let's take the EyePal for example since that's my current project. One
of my contacts is the head of sales for humanware north america, and you
couldn't ask for a friendlier more supportive person. So she loaned me their
demo EyePal knowing full well I planned to use it on my mac. When I got the
unit, it didn't come with mac software. The windows software was 3 versions
out of date, and the camera was the old 3 mpx version in stead of the 5 mpx
version shipping with the current model. When I got back with her on the fact
that what she gave me bore no resemblance to what I would actually be buying,
she literally said to me, well erik, what do you expect? So I told her
straight up that I expected a demo of a $2200 piece of kit to reflect the
product, and that I thought it looked bad on the company. I also told her I
wasn't going to show it to clients in the state it was in, since it crashed my
virtual machine every 5 or 10 scans and was liable to give my clients flight
responses. She told me straight up that she'd look into getting mac software,
but that if ABISee wanted to charge humanware $150 for the mac version the
company wouldn't pay because they couldn't guarantee a sale. So I told her I
saw a need and could generate two leads for her in a month with mac software,
but I could guarantee those two leads were going nowhere without a proper demo.
And she shrugged and said she would see what she could do. Now, I want to
make it clear that I like this person and think that as long as she makes her
sales targets, she really wants to help clients. But I straight up haven't got
any interest in doing business with a company that has a problem spending $150
to generate $4400 in sales. To me, that shows disrespect for the product and
the client. We had a similar rangle over the Victor stream value pack, which I
consider an insult to the consumer, especially the way they handled it. The
attitude carries across the bord. I like GW-micro and think window-eyes is a

Travelreporter GPS milage log

2011-01-22 Thread Sarah Alawami
This ap seems pretty good. the discriptions is quite interesting. Note: I
didn't write this at all! but here is the link.

Description of app:
Do you have to keep a mileage log but thinks it is a bore.Travelreporter makes
it as easy as it can be. Tap start trip when you enter the car and then tap
stop trip when you are at your destination. Travelreporter will automatically
log your start address, end address, distance travelled, time for the trip,
and, if you want, place/customer and what car you have used. You don't have to
enter any text, but if you want, you can add a note. And if you should forget
to stop your trip you will be reminded after standing still for 10 minutes. You
can create different reports, which you can send by e-mail, save to your
computer (via iTunes) or print (iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4).You can also follow up
your fuel consumption per car. The only thing you have to do is enter the
amount, when you refuel your car.The trip can log Date, Start address, End
Address, Start time, End time, Total time for the trip, Distance travelled,
Place/Customer, Car used and Notes. You can sort the reports, with subtotals on
Place/Customer and Car.You will get an abbreviated report on the iPhone
and a full report that you can email, print or copy to your computer both as an
HTML report and as a .csv-report for MS Excel etc. When you stop a trip
you can, if you want, get a list of Places/Customers sorted on Start or End
place, to choose from, for easy finding. You can also get a list of cars to
choose from.If you have an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4, Travelreporter will log
everything in the background, so you can make a phone call or user other apps
during your trip or you can lock the screen to save battery. If you have an
iPhone 3G, Travelreporter will stay in the foreground during the whole trip.
However, if you get a phone call, Travelreporter will restart itself after the
phone call has finished and continue the trip. You can see your trip and
your places on a map during the trip, to help you navigate to the
destination.Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically
decrease
battery life.

The theory behind this app sounds great, but the few reviews available, are

The app is $5 BTW.

RE: anyone tried eharmony?

Actually, I know several people who found success with Eharmony, but I agree
with Scott, in that you can find that special person anywhere. i know a
couple who met at a bus stop, just like that Hollys song. I know a woman
whose future husband pumped her gas one day in a service station. But
screen reader users have told me that they needed sighted assistance at
times navigating the site.

Meeting that special someone out and around
like the grocery store, restaurant, dog track, what ever has advantages not
the least of which is you get through that whole uneasiness with blindness
thing right from the get go.

That's my point that and Eharmony doesn't play nice on the net. No
harshness intended.

yes, this is on topic lol.
Sort of in the same spirit of Carolin's site question at that place
that made me hungry...honeybaked I think.
What is so amazing about eharmony is that no one has not made them fix
this already. One of the reps told me they have had complaints before, and
yet on one of the critical sections, the in my own words part of the
profile, requires a physical mouse click to submit...no button whatsoever.
I have tried both lynx as in the cat, and e-links which can usually
manage java scripting, but it is a mess. some links work others do not etc.
Does not help that the men they are sending are totally wrong for me
lol. Or maybe I should be glad since I cannot do much at all.
if someone wants to really take a look, I may have to share my log in,
do not mind for the sake of some wisdom, because it is amazing .

I use it here without a problem though I haven't tweaked any options at all as
the defaults do me just fine!

You don't need to open Dropbox at all as it starts automatically, the Dropbox

example go into Finder, and type command-n, new Window pops up and the
dropbox folder is found in this folder.
