Re: scanning and the mac

2011-02-19 Thread Chris Moore
I have boot camp installed on my 13 inch Macbook Pro, no sound issues here.
However I am running XP and not Windows 7 though. So not sure if that makes a
difference.
On 19 Feb 2011, at 03:14, David Tanner wrote:

It isn't Fusion that is the problem. The issue is if you try to run Windows
without running it as a virtual machine. The sound usually works if you are
running Windows through Fusion as a virtual machine. But, if you choose to
boot to Windows instead of booting into Snow Leopard and boot directly into
Windows there is a good chance that you will not have any sound in Windows
due to some kind of sound driver problem that Apple and Microsoft neither
seem to have a good answer to. But, luckily it only happens on the MacBook
Pro 13. I have the MacBook Pro 15 and have never had the problem with mine
or any of the about 15 machines that I have setup with both Windows 7 and
 Snow Leopard.

That seems quite odd, as I have a iMac and a 13 inch Macbook Pro, and VM
Fusion is fine on the Macbook. I also have the iPal Solo (stand alone
version of the iPal). I opted for this as I did not realise at the time they
 were working on Mac software.

You are right on, the only accessible OCR for Mac right now is Eye-Pal which
has no where close to the features of Kurzweil1000. The best solution at
this time is K11000 in Windows and with the latest Fusion you should be able
to setup a hotkey so that you can actually launch K1000 while you are still
in Snow Leopard and Fusion will handle getting you over to Windows,
launching K1000; which isn't half bad.

Just a word of warning here. After more than one experience; stay away from
the Mac Book Pro 13 inch laptop. There appears to be a problem with not
always getting sound on the Windows side of things which apparently can only
be solved by installing a USB soundcard to use for sound on the Windows side
of things. Again, this only seems to happen with the 13 inch model of Mac
 Book Pro.

There is no solution for the Mac equal to K1000 if you use things like the
bookmark and other features of that application. The k3000 for Mac is old
and not vo-compatible and not appropriate for blind folks. Stick with k1000
and never mind native Mac solutions if you're a power user, which it sounds
like you are. You won't be happy with other solutions that don't offer
features you're use to and don't offer anything like the convenience of the
K1000 application. I have K1000 running on a Windows machine with a bookedge
scanner by Plustek. Bootcamp or a vm may work for you. Good luck.

airport extreme in a mixed mac pc environment?

2011-02-19 Thread Mary Otten
Hi all,

We have an old linksys router that has served us wonderfully for several years.
But it is time to move on and upgrade to something that will give us higher
speed wireless, now that none of our wireless devices require the older 208-11G
protocol. Between us, we have an IPod, IPad and an Android phone that will
connect wirelessly as well as a pc laptop. And we have pc and mac desktops that
will connect via wire, except perhaps for my Mac if there aren't enough cable
connections on the airport extreme. I'd like to get the Airport Extreme, but my
sighted husband is worried about connectivity with his pcs. I was so impressed
with the ease of set up with the airport express and the Mac and am quite wary
of the newer pc-oriented routers that all seem to want you to install
proprietary software, unlike our old linksys. So, does anybody have experience
in setting up an airport extreme in this environment? What can one do about the
limited number of cable connections for wired computer set up off the router?
If this isn't sufficiently vo-related, reply off list would be find, but I hope
it fits within the criteria for the list, since one of my reasons for wanting
to go this route is to ensure accessibility of set up and compatibility with my
Mac and other I-devices.

Re: airport extreme in a mixed mac pc environment?

2011-02-19 Thread Scott Howell
Mary,

First you should have no problems setting up Macs, PCs, iOS devices, or Android
devices to operate happily on a network using an Apple Extreme. You get three
wired ports on the Extreme and if that is not enough, you can always get a
switch, which would allow you to expand the number of ports. I have had all
matter of devices on my wireless network and I have been using Apple routers
for a number of years now.

Hi all,

I was reading the thread about problems with the new Audio Hijack. I had this
problem too. My mic was set to soundflower, and didn't record. I installed
instant hijack and this didn't fix the problem for me. I had to go over to the
input tab on the default system input setting and from the menu select internal
mic. This seemed to rectify the problem as I recorded a podcast on online
grocery shopping afterwards. I hope this helps. Have a wonderful day.

Musically,

Re: OCR for Mac

2011-02-19 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Joanne,

I use the combination of VueScan and ABBYY FineReader for scanning and OCR on
the Mac. I get excellent results from this arrangement.

VueScan costs around $79 US and ABBYY FineReader around $90 US.

The setup process is a bit fiddly, but once it's done, everything works
smoothly.

I configure VueScan to produce TIFF files as I don't use this format for
anything else, and I set all TIFF files to open with ABBYY FineReader by
default.

I can't compare this to anything on Windows as I've never used Windows.

Cheers,

Anne

Anti Virus Software

2011-02-19 Thread Ian Robinson
Hi All,

I got my Mac about 10 days ago and have been running Virus Barrier in
evaluation mode. Before I buy the software, has anyone got any suggestions for
other anti virus software?

Thanks in advance.

scanning using only a mac

2011-02-19 Thread Brian Miller
Hello all,

It sounds like everyone who scans using their MAC does so using Windows -- I
assume this means people have partitioned off a section of their MAC to
create a Windows environment in which they drop their scanning software?

Is there any scanning software that is accessible as works totally in the
MAC environment (Snow Leopard, or whatever the heck the latest software is)?

Thanks,

Brian Miller

Re: Anti Virus Software

2011-02-19 Thread Bryan Jones
I previously used ClamXAV but switched to the free Sophos product when it was
released a few months ago. Both are strictly anti-virus, no firewall or other
security bits are included, which is how I personally like it. Both are
accessible with VO, though Sophos seems to be using some non-standard control
panel that requires some getting used to.

Neither product has ever given me any problems that I am aware of. Of course
malware in general is less of a problem on OSX, and while ClamX was kind enough
to point out a potential phishing email found in one of my mailboxes during a
full scan, nothing else nasty has ever been reported.

Disclaimer: I previously worked in IT security and, while I don't consider
myself to be inherently paranoid, I've seen enough crap to be convinced that
some form of malware protection should be used on a Mac. When I hear the
inevitable quips about how OSX is inherently secure, or how it's a waste to run
malware protection software on a Mac, or other such short-sighted comments, I
just sigh and press the delete button.

No links pasted because both products will show at the top of a properly
worded google search.

HTH,
Bryan

youtube

2011-02-19 Thread Mike Arrigo
Hey everyone, ok, this one really has me stumped, wondering if anyone can
perhaps think of something I forgot. On one of my mac minis, youtube videos
just will not play, the plug ins are enabled, and I have the newest flash
player, 10.2. Also, if I boot my mac mini from my external hard drive using a
backup I did last week, the videos also don't work, and the problem started
after I did this backup. So, using carbon copy cloner, I did a current backup
on the mini having the problem, then I took my external hard drive to my other
mac mini, ad booted it from the external drive. The videos played just fine,
therefore I know it's not operating system related. Because of that, I didn't
think repairing permissions would make a difference, but I did it anyway using
the snow leppard DVD. Thinking it might be a port on the router, I tried
connecting through wireless, no difference. Also disconnected and reconnected
the monitor and even unplugged the power cord. Flash on other web sites play
just fine. I suppose I could try connecting the cable modem directly to this
mac and make sure it's not a quirk with the router. Anyone got any other ideas?

I used Protect Mac Anti virus at http://www.protectmac.com which isn't a bad

Both Eset Cyber Security and Protect Mac Anti virus are extremely accessible

Re: airport extreme in a mixed mac pc environment?

2011-02-19 Thread Scott Granados
Mary, few points here.

First, you should have 0 interoperability issues. Scott's response earlier was
right on the money.

That being said, you might want to look at other brands. People are doing cool
things with routers and switches out there and depending on your home
connection and the speed of your service you want a router that will keep up.

You will notice a huge bump in performance simply by upgrading rom that linksys
to something else since linksys had poor forwarding engines.

Check out the DLink products as well and remember that even though software is
included with these routers you do not have to use it. They are all
configurable through the web.

Definitely feel secure in going with Apple though.

phone that will connect wirelessly as well as a pc laptop. And we have pc and
mac desktops that will connect via wire, except perhaps for my Mac if there
aren't enough cable connections on the airport extreme. I'd like to get the
Airport Extreme, but my sighted husband is worried about connectivity with
his pcs. I was so impressed with the ease of set up with the airport express
and the Mac and am quite wary of the newer pc-oriented routers that all seem
to want you to install proprietary software, unlike our old linksys. So, does
anybody have experience in setting up an airport extreme in this environment?
What can one do about the limited number of cable connections for wired
computer set up off the router? If this isn't sufficiently vo-related, reply
off list would be find, but I hope it fits within the criteria for the list,
since one of my reasons for wanting to go this route is to ensure
accessibility of set up and compatibility with my Mac and other I-devices.

I see where you're coming from regarding the waste of money bit but you can
take that in 2 ways, as I said in my original message if you've purchased a
licence for multi machines then you've wasted no extra money at all as it
doesn't cost you any extra money to buy the Mac product.

What I like about Eset Cyber Security is that its completely quiet meaning it
runs in the background and only rears its head if it needs to alert you of
something, Protect Mac was a bit of a pain, whilst it worked it always reared
its head if you logged onto another drive, downloaded a file or whatever.

I don't think Protect Mac had the ability to scan for malicious code in the
background either as the Eset products do.

Re: Problem with the latest version of Audio Hijack Pro

2011-02-19 Thread Thomas Byskov Dalgaard
Hi!

Sorry, Ricardo, I have not a suggestion to your problem. However I found
another issue with the app:
I want to record the system output to a single file and my mic to another file
so I can put them together in an external editor which supports
multitracking. My problem is that I can not find any way to record multiple
sessions at the same time. In other words:
I can record both files but the length of them are different because they
can't start recording with one press of the record button. DOes anyone have a
suggestion to fix this?
i Know I could record it all into one file, but I want to have total control
over both recordings.
Best regards

Re: Anti Virus Software

2011-02-19 Thread Dane Trethowan
Anti Virus is not a Must Have if you're using a Mac, though I'd consider Anti
spyware of particular importance.

If you're using your Mac on a network with Windows PC's then Yep, I'd
personally recommend a good anti virus package, its probable your Mac won't be
infected but that doesn't mean your Mac can't pass on viruses, act as a carrier
in other words and that's where an Anti Virus package is handy as it can stop
viruses spreading in their tracks by cleaning infected files, detecting
malicious code etc.

Re: Problem with the latest version of Audio Hijack Pro

2011-02-19 Thread Darcy Burnard
Hi Thomas. This script will do what you want, assuming you have your
microphone set as the default system input.

tell application Audio Hijack Pro
set session1 to the first session whose name contains System Audio
set session2 to the first session whose name contains Default
tell session1 to start hijacking
tell session2 to start hijacking
tell session1 to start recording
tell session2 to start recording
end tell

What you want to do is open up script editor and paste in the above script.
You could run it by pressing command r. What I would suggest you do is to save
it, and then set up one of VoiceOver's keyboard commander shortcuts to it.
Then you can start recording from anywhere.
HTH.

Hi Anne,

Thanks, I did in fact see your message just after I posted mine. What kind
of scanning can you do? I'm used to scanning both small batches of things,
such as the mail, and large batches of things, such as books. Although I
don't scan as many books as I used to, I would definitely like to be able to
do so with my MAC.

And do you read the scans with Voice Over? I assume you must.

Thanks for any clarifications you can provide.

Re: scanning using only a mac

2011-02-19 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Brian,

I scan both single sheets and whole books.

I use a Cannon Lide 700F portable USB scanner with my 2007 white MacBook.

In VueScan, you can set it to single or multi-page scanning. You can also set
it to auto-repeat so that you don't have to keep pressing Cmd-N on the computer.

After pressing Cmd-G to tell VueScan that the last page has been scanned, ABBYY
FineReader is launched automatically. I've set a shortcut key for creating a
text file, so all I have to enter is the filename.

I generally scan a double-page at a time and have scanned over a hundred such
double-page spreads into one file and had FineReader recognise them.

VueScan comes in two flavours now: 32-bit and 64-bit. It all depends on your
scanner which one you need. My Cannon Lide 700F works with the 64-bit version,
whereas my much older CAnnon Pixma MP170 only works with the 32-bit version.

In System Preferences, I've set my Cannon Lide 700F to open VueScan when I
press the Scan button. However, I cant get VueScan to recognise the buttons on
my scanner, despite the fact that there are popup buttons to configure the
scanner buttons. I need to look into this further.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi Joanne:
People seem to be having good success with a software called Vuescan, and Abbyy
Fine Reader Express. If you google these, there sites should come up easily.
The Vuescan is good because it works with a wider variety of scanners, and
Abbyy works well in terms of clear scanning and page orientation.

Re: Recording Mic via AudioHijackPro.

2011-02-19 Thread Darcy Burnard
Hi Geof. Soundflower no longer comes with audio hijack pro. It used to be
there were two components that you needed to install. Instant hijack allowed
audio hijack pro to hijack audio from an app without restarting it. While
soundflower allowed you to record all system audio. Now they have a new
component called instant on, which is supposed to replace both of those older
components. However instant on doesn't seem to include the mic while hijacking
system audio. Even if you have the mic hijacked with another session, and have
it's output going through default system output, instant on doesn't seem to
grab it.

Just a word of warning here. After more than one experience; stay away

There is no solution for the Mac equal to K1000 if you use things like
the bookmark and other features of that application. The k3000 for Mac is
old and not vo-compatible and not appropriate for blind folks. Stick with
k1000 and never mind native Mac solutions if you're a power user, which
it sounds like you are. You won't be happy with other solutions that
don't offer features you're use to and don't offer anything like the
convenience of the K1000 application. I have K1000 running on a Windows
machine with a bookedge scanner by Plustek. Bootcamp or a vm may work for

I understand how to move the play head in small increments with the arrow keys
and select via i and o, but thought I'd ask whether the faster head
movement/selection techniques are accessible in a manner that I missed.

When I select tools - select play head I can not locate an edit field or
slider control. Ditto for tools - set selection (command-l).

The documentation indicates that one can combine the arrow keys with command,
control and option for larger increments, however they only seem to duplicate
the function of home and end (i.e move to the beginning or end).

Is there something I'm missing or is that as good as it gets for this app? TIA
for any suggestions and best regards.
Geoff
