Navigating pdfs in IBooks
Hi, folk, I've started creating pdf versions of some of my files, so I can read them in IBooks. I'm fairly sure they aren't optimized for accessibility in this case. Perhaps because of this, I have unpredictable results when turning pages in these files. sometimes I can go from page 22 to page 177 in one fell swoop. This is not very acceptable to me. Is there a way to set the reading preferences so that this doesn't happen? Is there some other way to turn pages than using the standard gestures or Braille equivalent (O chord) to go to the next horizontal page? Hello everyone. I've asked this question before but didn't get an answer. When downloading files, how do I check to confirm that the download is complete? Re: General questions on mac mini
I'll wait for lion because I'm anyway still saving up and it's not urgent. The reason for thinking a mini will be fine is because I'm currently running a pc with a 2.5 GHz dual core cpu and 2 GB ram and I'm recording fine. The mini can go up to 2.8 or 9 GHz dual core with 8 GB RAM, but please tell me what you guys think will I be fine with a mini? Another thing, is there something like 32 and 64 bit on a mac? would I be able to use 64 bit software designed for pc and mac and get the most from it on a mini? Re: What software comes with Mac OS?
Thanks a lot for this info. Another thing I wondered about, people use to say a mac can't get viruses like pc but the other day I saw a add on the internet, it was eset nod32 who had a antivirus program spesifically designed for mac. So do they get viruses these days and will I have to get antivirus? Ezzy Bueno wrote: Hello, The Mac comes with iTunes as well as Textedit, iChat, Mail, Power DVD, a calculator and a number of other applications. With Textedit, you can save documents as Word documents, so that you can later open them using MS Word or other applications. Mail works well on the Mac. It is easily usable and you will love it. I can't really compare it to Outlook, since I never used it. The Mac will not come with apps such as Excel and Powerpoint. I bought the iWork application, which comes with Numbers (same as Excel), Pages (same as Word), and Keynote (same as Powerpoint). The app will cost you about $75. I want to know what software comes standard with lets say snow leopard, as I understand it comes standard with quite a lot. If compared to windows software does it come with email software like outlook, software like MS word and excel, does it come with a PDF reader like adobe reader? I at least know it comes with itunes but that's about it, thing is I'm trying to work out how much money I'll have to spend on software when getting a mac, I basically just want to do simular things as those I currently do on MS office, adobe reader, power dvd and itunes but I'm already using itunes on my pc. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: preview questions
Hi Esther, Think you very much for helping me out with the reading of the PDF files. My thanks also goes to Robert. I just got my Mac Air some three weeks ago. Regards, Cheok Cheng Ann cheokcheng...@gmail.com http://www.chengann.com/ On 04-Apr-2011, at 5:42 PM, Esther wrote: Hi Cheng Ann, Let me separate this question and address this in the context of your earlier query in a separate thread, which was about reading mail attachments and using Preview vs. Quicklook. First, if you are having difficulty reading beyond the first page in Preview, you should first check how you have set Preview to display pages -- whether the PDF Display mode under the View menu on your menu bar is set to Single Page or Single Page Continuous. (Control+F2 or VO-M to move to the menu bar, press v to move to View, then arrow down to PDF Display and check the sub-menu to find your display mode.) If your PDF Display is set to Single Page, VoiceOver will stop reading at the end of the first page, and you'll have to page down to advance in a multi-page PDF document (I use Fn+Down Arrow on a MacBook). If it is set to Single Page Continuous, then provided you have interacted before issuing your VO-A read all command, as Robert explained. There are also other options such as for going to specific pages and associated keyboard shortcuts in the Go menu as he mentioned (e.g. Command-Option-G). Secondly, your original question was about reading a PDF document attachment in mail. Normally, if I'm sent a multi-page PDF document as a mail attachment that I know I want to keep, my first step will be to save that file in some permanent folder on disk, then open it in Preview from that location. Quick Look is meant for just that purpose -- to give you a quick peak into a document or audio file's contents. It runs only when this it is in foreground -- so if you switch apps to answer a Skype call or move to another task it is automatically paused until it is switched back as the app in focus. It's a low overhead way to view contents of files, since you don't really open the file in an application when you Quick Look it. But that also means that you can't modify your navigation within the file (e.g., go back to the beginning, or skip ahead) or edit tags (in music files). In mail you can similarly use Quick Look to examine attachments to decide how to handle them -- either by reading entire short attachments or viewing enough to decide how to dispose of the these. The default button actions beside the attachments are Quick Look or Save. And as Robert noted, your question is separate from the issue in Denise's original post. HTH. Dear Paul, When you start downloading a file, Voiceover usually sayss something like 'list or download list' as a new download window appears Interact with the list twice with vo+shift+downarrow and you should see the name of the file being downloaded. Hello Marlaina, Really, there's nothing to get excited about. Hardly anyone has had any success with Zoom Reader. I'm totally blind and get reasonable results with Both Prizmo and SayText which are considerably cheaper than Zoom Reader. In my opinion, Prizmo is the best so far, and it's multilingual which for me is a big plus. All these OCR apps require quite a bit of practice before you get good results, but it can be done. Re: What software comes with Mac OS?
Hi, Speaking from experience, iChat is accessible, but Adium is preferable. I have multiple accounts which iChat doesn't support. You can configure iChat to speak in a similar manner to Adium, but overall for better functionality the latter wins hands down. That being said, I know some people will probably like iChat for its video conferencing and voice chat abilities, which as far as I'm aware Adium hasn't quite caught up to yet. There's also the fact that yes, it does come with Mac OS, which is nice for convenience reasons. Hope this helps, Zack. Re: zoomreader for the iphone!
I would just like to point out that this is not an OCR app for the blind. Rather it is geared towards those who have some usable vision much like zoom text is. If one buys this app with the expectation that it will be an ocr solution for the blind, one will be disappointment. The fact that people have assumed that this app is an ocr app for the blind has sparked quite a debate on the aiphone list. Hopefully this will help to eliminate confusion and save some one from being disappointed. Re: zoomreader for the iphone!
Neil I was thinking exactly the same thing. Those with total vision loss would not buy zoomtext, but rather purchase JAWS because it caters more to their needs. From what i have seen, zoomreader has a lot of visual queues (buttons etc) and i am not sure whether a totally blind user would be able to use it, especially when trying to take an accurate photo of a document. For totals like me, I would recommend getting Light Detector as well to make sure that there's sufficient light for the OCR apps to work. Re: zoomreader for the iphone!
I will be testing Aisquared's Zoom Reader and let you all know how it works from the point of view of both blind and low vision users. My partner just installed the app on her phone so hang in there. There seems to be a great deal of contusion concerning this app. The description in the app store claims the app will convert text to speech, we shall see.
