New application from Mac-paw, Gemini

2012-02-25 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Listers,

Mac-paw has just released a new application called Gemini. It is a
duplicate finder application. Do check if you wish to buy it whether
it runs oj on 32 bit processors. the one I've bought is for 64 bit
processors. It looks accessible with only one unknown button. It is
supposed to find duplicate files on your computer. Lots of shortcut
keys if you go through its menu, they are listed there. Best thing is
that it is on time limited offer of 4.99 dollars in the appstore or
£2.99.

Best wishes

Andrew

Re: Messages and the Battery

2012-02-25 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

press function F5 or just F5 depending on how you have function keys set up in
system preferences, to dim the keyboard backlight. As far as sighted people
using the computer, just tell them to press function F2 or F2 to brighten the
screen You press Function F1 or F1 to turn the screen off.

have these lights and if so, refresh my memory about disabling them.

VoiceOver Skips Around Page Problem, Help?

2012-02-25 Thread mrgushi
Good to be part of the group now.

I'm developing a WebApp for the Blind community which I'm part of;
Its
a Braille Reference guide.
Ive run into a problem with VoiceOver(VO) jumping around when
switching pages.
It occurs in iOS 4.3.5 5.0.1. Apparently Voiceover focus can be
influenced based on the previous WebPages Orientation or Layout when
you double-tapped your link of submission (input tag in my case). So
instead of VO focusing and reading content from the top of the next
page it could start at the bottom, middle, top; pretty much anywhere
depending on where the item was you tapped on. I'd love some input on
how to deal with this, if there's a WAI-ARIA solution that Safari
supports, perhaps some other sort of Dashcode solution.
I've entertained using JavaScript to hide everything on the page but
the top Navigation bar thus forcing VO to read that first... in
theory. But I can't figure out how to trigger an event to the show
all
the rest of the content. I was thinking of using a mouseover or
mouseout function but VO doesn't interact with any of those; at least
in a way I understand yet. I've already considered tabindex to force
VO to the top element but that only works with keyboard driven screen
readers so no go there. I'm consulting Apple's Accessibility team who
is very helpful but I'd love some feedback incase they don't have a
solution. Maybe a Landmark feature; I'm not sure at this point...
could really use some ideas.

Here's a link to the WebApp this will Set a Cookie that will give you
Access Permissions.

Here's a Video Demonstrating the problem.

(Little About the App: The app is a Braille Reference Guide for
English to Braille Lookups or Braille Codes to English: Example Dot
12 (or 1 2) are the letter B or word But depending on context)

Howdy, everybuddy!

2012-02-25 Thread Keith Hinton
Hi to all members, new or long-time to Mac Visionaries:
I wanted to take a second to intraduce myself in general to the rest
of you.
Some of you, I've heard on Podcasts, voice wise at least, and I've
even talked to some of you throughout the years in several online
forms, Skype being the latest method.
To start off with, I live in a small town called Prescott, located in
the awesome state of Arizona.
I'm 24 years old-and in just s few short months, on May 23, I'll be
turning 25, so that should be pretty awesome!

I've grown up computer technology wise first starting with jAWS for
DOS in the second grade, and even what I suspect in the first grade
as an Apple two E machine, though i never used any speech technology
or screen-readers back then, and always had sighted help.
Windows, as years whent on, later became the primary platform, and for
specific screen readers like Serotek's System Access that I pay a
monthly subscription for, I'll generally use Windows (though more and
more often on a VM in VMware fusion,) for that kind of purpose.
Finally, as of June 2011 I finally had something I could sel on
BlindBargains to a Technology Specialest who wanted this Alva Braille
Display I wasn't using, and with the money I earned I was able to pick
up the MacBookPro for $1,366 on Amazon. I got my macbOok Pro, 13
intch, Core I7, 2.7GHZ, 4GB RAM, 500GB internal hard-drive, Super DVD
drive, with Lion already the default oS as no dVD shipped, back in
November, 08, 2011.
One of my friends who is a member of this list, was actually around
for the unboxing on Skype, a rather fun thing to experience.
At first, I thought that maybe I'd use it for a lot of the things I
kno some folks have, being a listener of both the MacCessibility
roundTablePodcast, and of the ScreenlessSwitchers podcast, just to
name a few, and of course a lot of the Mac podcasts that mike has done
on BlindCoolTech being some of the things that got my mind finally
made up.
Now we get into some of the real background stuff that I'm sure you
folks will be interested in.
I've been a pianest for over 11 years, I first got myf irst little
keyboard when I was like 4 or 5.
Over the years I got better stuff, until I finally was able with some
help from one of my teachers down in tucson, to get what i had most
wanted..the yamaha P85, 88 key waited-keys keyboard, with the coolest
thing that at the time I couldn't take advantage of, MIDI ports.
Finally, just a week or two back, I purchased on recommendations from
a new skype friend I've made in south Affrica, The EMU-XMIDI1X1 USB
MIDI interface cable, and began to try, and record with the already
isntalled iLife11 GarageBand application.
I enjoy the quality of the garageBand instruments, but then I quickly
found out some things about the program.
First, I need a way to export the raw MIDI instructions as a MID (Dot
Mid) file, prefered MIDI type one, but in garageband itself after my
firend and i did some looking around, we concluded that this is not
possible.
Sure, you can export stuff to MP3, etc, but you cannot export the
actual MIDI data.
Also, the ability to edit the MIDI data for mistakes, etc, doesn't
seem to be possible, within the GarageBand editor is a Scrol Area
that appears to not be accessible entirely to VoiceOver.
So, I next began looking around for something else I could use that of
course has software instruments (and not cruddy ones, at that.)
I had considered logicPro, because I can actually afford that within
my extremely tight budget that I have to work with, but found a post
from this group that prompted me to subscribe Don't recall the names
of the two posters off hand..sorry about that.
But anyhow, two people posted to some thread, one poster considering
logicProNine, and the other poster a former musician I believe
explained that ProTools is far more accessible to VoiceOver, and that
Apple must reright LogicPro entirely, or something and to go with
ProTools.
So I started looking around at ProTools on places like Sweetwater,
only to discover that basicly as things stand I'll never be able to
save up enough money, not even in a five month basis to afford
ProTools, at least not any time soon, and no, my budget is not likely
to change in the coming year.
At the moment, I'm having to go back and forth between using a free
Windows app called QWS (Quick Windows Sequencer), and an old version
of CakewalkPro Audio Nine that has loads of accessibility problems,
not to mention crappy quality software instruments.
I'd like to do what my friend in South Affrica does for a living-that
is do backtracks for companies as a living, because he's made plenty
of money doing this.
I would like to do nothing else-I wouldn't be happy with any other
type of job, no matter what it's money amount may be, and I know
myself better than most professional councilors who have worked with
me on jobs, etc.
I've also been told flat out that VR will not help those who wish to
work out of the home, and a home-based recoding

Hi there
Well, if I can make a wish list list, I would like a good, PDF

Vocational rehab should be able to help you set up a small business.

You can also use the work incentives in the Social Security system to help
set up small businesses.

Try the Griffin Hammis web site. If you want help learning to get what
you need out of vr let me know.

I was a rehab counselor for along time and enjoy helping people get what

kno some folks have, being a listener of both the MacCessibility
roundTablePodcast, and of the ScreenlessSwitchers podcast, just to
name a few, and of course a lot of the Mac podcasts that mike has done
on BlindCoolTech being some of the things that got my mind finally
At the moment, I'm having to go back and forth between using

2012-02-25 Thread ShamelessFanGirl
Afternoon listers,

I'm playing with the trial of this app, and upon initiating a scan, whether it
be full, or otherwise, I don't see a way of viewing scan progress. Wondering if
this is due to my novice status with the Mac, orsome tip/trick I may be
missing.

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this app, and/or my usage of
it. :)

Re: unzipping db books

2012-02-25 Thread Gigi
Hi there
I never had any use anymore for the zip files for bar books. However, if you
want them, you can just copy them from the trash or put them back. To put them
back, just press command delete on the zip file and it'll put them back
I guess you have noticed by now, but the Mac automatically unzips files that
are downloaded. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that one!
Regards
Gigi

Question about hotspots

2012-02-25 Thread Bill Holton
Hi.

In Mail I have two hotspots set up, VO 0 for the search box and VO 9 for the
inbox message list. Whenever I press VO 0 and do a search, I can no longer
press VO 9 and get back to the message list to read the messages that match
the search. When I press VO 9 twice and call up the hotspot list it has VO
9 as the inbox list, but it's inactive, I'm guessing because now the message
list is named after my search term and for the moment there is no inbox. Is
there anyway I can set up a hot spot or some other quick way to return focus
to the current message list after I have done a search?

Thanks.

Re: iOS developing

2012-02-25 Thread Sean Murphy
Hi,

If you want a major challenge. Then something that I feel would be excellent on
the IOS device is a program that will allow someone to review organisation
charts, network diagrams, and the like.

How would this work?

1. every graphical picture is an object.
2. When you move to the object it reads out an description.
3. You can either move around the screen with your fingers or use the
left/right swipe movements to move between objects.
4. If you move off an object, then you get a audio sound.
5. New graphic objects can be added plus description.
6. Part of the description would be:

a) Name of the object. Such as diamond
B) Any explanation information in the object with focus would be read out.
C) Announcing what other objects are connected to this object.

The sighted person sees it graphically while the blind person can build up an
understanding of the diagram. An example might make this clearer.

Imagine you have a network diagram of 4 routers in a shape of a square. The
focus is on the first router. Router 1 would say:

Router 1object (upper left hand corner).
Serial1 link object on right. 56k speed
Ethernet 1object on bottom. 10mbps speed
Name: r1 - 3650 Cisco

When you move to the Serial link object it would say:

serial 1link
router1 object on left r1 - 3650 cisco s1/1
router2 object on right. 3560 Cisco s1/1
56k speed

You are adding descriptive text properties to the objects. You could use x/y
position to identify object position of the top and bottom corners. If the
object over laps, then you report this. This is how an object would know if an
object is connected to one of its sides by sharing the same border values.

I have seen something like this with VB6 and Jaws. So I know it can be done.
This would make an fantastic tool for Business and computer professionals. Such
as flow charts, UML diagrams, etc.

If you want to talk in more depth. Drop me a line.

As I stated, it is a major task.

Re: Office Productivity on the Mac

2012-02-25 Thread Sean Murphy
Hi,

The requirements you have in relation to office application is related to your
skill level or what features you require to use.

Tables within Pages o not work. I am aware of many discussions on work arounds.
But pages doesn't work with tables. There are other text based Unix
applications that do work. In a Business world, you don't use those tools
because everyone else uses Gui word processes. Sharing documents becomes far
more complex, even if it is possible.

Spreadsheets when I played with them called Numbers was really painful. I just
could not get around the spreadsheet and things were either double speaking or
not.

Presentation tools I found not accessible at all.

All above apps are for iWork's. So Apple do have a lot of work to improve.
Pages appears to be the most accessible. But there are a lot of features of
Word Processing that isn't accessible.

No. I mean in VoiceOver Utility, in the Navigation category, where you have

should have the Mouse pointer: pop up button set to Ignores VoiceOver cursor.
I find VO to be more stable this way.

I suggest if you are using the Ical on your mac, make sure your contacts are in

with that entry, go to the scroll area and interact twice and vo right arrow
through that entry. That is how I do it. You can also install a wigit or you
have a wigit which you will find (forget where it is) as I've not used them

Please someone correct me if there is a better way to use the calendar.

Type In Braille

2012-02-25 Thread chris hallsworth
Just purchased this app thanks to a friend recommendation. I like this
app a lot already. Sent my first text message using it. Is certainly a
lot quicker and easier than typing on the virtual keyboard. The latest
version even allows you to share your text both on Twitter and/or
Facebook. The app is £2.99 here in the UK.

Re: Type In Braille

2012-02-25 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi Chris.

What you speak about was done by Code Factory on their Last release of Windows
Mobile and the current versions of Mobile Speak.

If you have seen the one's done by Code Factory, is the one for the I phone
better? The reason for asking is that I do use a braille display with my I
phone 4S and finding writing in grade II quicker although I do use the onscreen
keyboard if I have no keyboard to hand or braille display as I can't always
dictate in the environments I am in i.e. work, using public transport etc.

Thanks in advance.

Kawal.

Hi Kawal,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think so. I upgraded to the latest

Re: How do I select all on the I pone?

2012-02-25 Thread Alex Hall
I hate to say this... but you can't select all messages at once. Sorry.

You can, however, delete a message while reading it. Just find the
move button at the bottom of the screen, select the trash folder
from the folder list that appears, and the message goes away. Note
that when you do this, the next mesage in the folder will appear, you
will not be taken back to the message list.

The only way I know to delete multiple messages is to press the edit button at

press the move button and select the trash folder to move them.
You must be in the list of your mesasges to do this.

Re: Typing Tutorial for the Mac

2012-02-25 Thread Esther
Hi all,

Back on the old macvisionaries list (a few years before it moved to
GoogleGroups in 2009), I recall this question was asked, and James Austin
mentioned there were a couple of accessible typing tutors at the PureMac web
site:
http://www.pure-mac.com/typing.html
I have no idea which ones they are, since that wasn't mentioned, but you could
try starting there. This is long enough ago that it's possible the software
was only for PowerPC's. (Rosetta stopped being supported for Intel Macs with
Leopard.) Still, they give links and many of the entries are shareware, so you
might be able to find trial downloads. That page is specifically for typing
software.

I'm really, really glad we have the secondary Mail Archive for this list, since
it's possible to pull up these old references with a simple search, even if the
post was from 2006, and the details long forgotten. I really wish there were
similar archiving for the viphone list, because I'm sure that lots of valuable
bits of information have gotten lost due to the must weaker search support.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Apple TV

2012-02-25 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys.
Today I spent some dough and got a new TV with the appropriate HDMI cable and a
new speaker system. Now I am thinking about getting the Apple TV. Well, I know
it has VoiceOver in it, of course. Unlike the much despised microwave I was
trying to also get at the time, at least I know the Apple TV is accessible.
Guys, it sure is getting awful for us to buy appliances these days, but I
digress on the subject these days that is driving us crazy at times.

Getting back to the subject at hand, the salesman was going on and on about all
the other things you could get, and I finally stopped him and said if I was
going to get all those wonderful TV options I better get an Apple TV. I want to
do like you do on iTunes and just pay a little bit for movies and then give
them back; the same with TV shows. The other thing is, I like more the older TV
shows than the newer ones. Those of you that have the Apple TV, are you liking
it? Also, like I hope and suspect, do you just hook it with your TV, and then
press the play key three times, and you're in? What about this remote and this
iPhone app I saw talked about on the Apple web site?

Regards,
Gigi

But anyhow, two people posted to some thread, one poster considering
logicProNine, and the other poster a former musician I believe
explained that ProTools is far more accessible to VoiceOver, and that
Apple must reright LogicPro entirely, or something and to go with
 ProTools.
So I started looking around at ProTools on places like Sweetwater,
only to discover that basicly as things stand I'll never be able to

am trying to figure out how to quickly and efficiently use the calendar.
This would be one feature that could make that possible--the ability to
quickly scan events scheduled for the future. Any tips?
 Thanks. Marc
