Re: Play/Pause YouTube Videos

2012-02-26 Thread Emrah
Hey Mike,

You will have much better accessibility if you enable the HTML5 feature of
Youtube.
Go to http://www.youtube.com/html5 and just click the link that will allow you
to join the HTML5 beta program. It will save a Cookie in your browser and that
will be all.
After that, all videos that can be streamed and rendered using HTML5 will have
some new options that you will be able to read with VoiceOver, including the
Pause option.

I do not use Youtube extensively and hope my info is still up to date.

Let me know if this solution works and good luck,

Re: turning speech on and off

2012-02-26 Thread Garth Humphreys
Hi

Just to add to what others have said. I would try toggling VO off and back on
again, may be a couple of times. I find that if I have muted VO accidentally,
when it is toggled back on it will say something like "Voice Over On speech
muted" or similar. In any case you then know what the problem is and can work
from there. I don't know what the keyboard shortcut is for un muting VO. I am
not sure that it is the same thing as the F10 mute. I thought this was for
other system sounds.

Anyway sorry if I am off the mark - just a novice.

Re: turning speech on and off

2012-02-26 Thread Esther
Hi Dean and Gigi,

Actually, couldn't your friend try using the three-finger double tap on the
TrackPad to un-mute VoiceOver? That was my first thought, but I assumed that
you had tried to have him do that first. Gigi is correct, it helps to keep your
fingers slightly curved as well as separated when you do the double tap. The
other possibility for new users is that they have turned TrackPad Commander
off, if they've also managed to mute VoiceOver. In that case, hold down the
Control and Option keys, and make a rotor gesture in the clockwise direction
with two fingers on the trackpad, then try the two-finger triple tap again.

Alternatively, could this be one of the situations where VoiceOver is busy?
This is more likely to happen in Safari, or perhaps in Mail if lots of windows
are open, and occasionally in the iTunes Store. What happens if he uses
Command-Tab to switch to another application, and then toggles VoiceOver off
and on again with Command-F5? That should bring back VoiceOver even if it has
been accidentally muted.

Just trying to think out loud about possibilities.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Sorry, Dean, I didn't see your original message before I sent mine. I have had

Hi guys.
I also use the track pad. It's the same command as on the iPhone. With the
trackpad on, you can tap the trackpad twice with two fingers, just like on the

Re: turning speech on and off

2012-02-26 Thread Esther
Hi Dean,

There's the "Mute" button is on the F10 key. I toggle this on and off by
pressing FN+F10, but that's because under System Preferences > Keyboard on the
Keyboard tab I have the box checked for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard
function keys". If this box is not checked, you would just press the F10 key
by itself to toggle muting on and off.

Alternatively, just pressing the key to raise volume (FN+F12, or F12) will also
undo muting. There is a way to assign a key to the "Mute VoiceOver Toggle"
command, but I don't think there is any keyboard shortcut set by default to
that. It would be too devastating to come across this by accident.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Braille Touch: please help get Apple onboard

2012-02-26 Thread Alex Hall
It is not. There is an app called TypeInBraille, which is not the same
thing as the upcoming app at all; don't confuse the two, or you may
decide that input will not work. TypeInBraille uses a concept where
you enter a cell one row at a time; tap the left side for dot 1, the
right for dot 4, tap two fingers for 1 and 4, or tap three fingers to
skip this row. Once you do one of these, you move to the same gestures
for dots 2 and 5, then dots 3 and 6. So, you basically enter each
character two dots at a time.
Braille Touch, on the other hand, uses all six dots at once, Hold your
iTouch sideways, the home button to the left or right, and put your
thumbs behind the device. Put three fingers of each hand on the
screen, facing each other, as though the two rows of the standard
braille keyboard had been pivoted up so the tops of the keys faced
each other across the empty middle of the screen. From this position
you would type your braille. I tried it (with the iPod locked, but it
gave me an idea) and it took getting used to. Even so, I was getting
pretty good after a while, and it was easy to make the characters once
I stopped trying to think and just let my fingers do the typing. The
orientation is weird at first, though.
Anyway, the app will be available sometime this year; I have heard as
late as fall and as early as a couple weeks, so who knows? The team
developing it says it will be free when it comes out, so everyone can
try it to see how they like it.

No problem. I suspected you might be referring to the addressbook. It seems
like there is a lot of interacting necessary in order to browse a calendar. I
will see if the iphone app is more efficient.

Re: Braille Touch: please help get Apple onboard

2012-02-26 Thread James Mannion
I see your point about hoping to incorporate it as a keyboard option
similar to a language keyboard. Braille is kind of a "language". I
agree that making it an additional option and not taking anything away
is an extremely important point to stress. Is the stand alone app
available in the US yet? I could not find it and I wanted to see what
my efficiency would be with using it. Someone had it that posted to
the list from the UK I believe, but I could not get it to come up on a
search at all.

You guys are all crazy. :) the code is already written, tested, and working.
No one is saying you have to use it just because it's implemented. We're just
saying it should be a choice for people who want it. Apple could do this by
taking the code that's already been tested and implementing it across the board
in stead of restricting it to it's own app. It's a move that makes sense. If
you don't like to type in braille yourself, just ignore the option, but since
the work to make it happen is already done, why not let people who find it
useful... well... use it?

Play/Pause YouTube Videos

2012-02-26 Thread Michael Malarsie
Hey guys I have a question of my own.
To this day I can't figure out how to pause and resume playing YouTube
videos. I have always had to just let them play and I listen to the Voice Over.
Any info for me? I am hoping there is an wasy solution that I have just
overlooked like I have with some other basic functions. Thanks everyone!

This is what I do for signatures.
There is a built in text expander in Lion that you can turn on. Then
you can type whatever your signature is and choose that letters will expand to
it the hardest part is turning on the expander. I have a YouTube tytorial on it
if you are interseted. Again this only works in Lion.

Re: Braille Touch: please help get Apple onboard

2012-02-26 Thread Becky Knaub
I see what you mean. There is a difference in something being accessible and
being easy and quick for people to use in an equal fashion to sighted people.
Yes we can type on the keyboard but it is not quick, or that easy. It takes
time and can be frustrating. I hope they at least think it over.

Re: Moing Emails To A Different Mailbox

2012-02-26 Thread Esther
Hi Gigi and Ezzie,
Is Ezzie using Snow Leopard? Under Lion my Inbox got installed as a "Favorite
Mailbox", so I can automatically move selected messages, including "junk"
emails to my Inbox by pressing Command-Control-1, which is listed under the
options of the "Mailbox" menu on Mail's menu bar. Cut and paste also works,
but I think under Snow Leopard there was an option for moving your selection to
another mailbox, too, similar to how it's done in iOS. It's not something I
used very often, so I don't remember the sequence off the top of my head.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Braille Touch: please help get Apple onboard

2012-02-26 Thread Alex Hall
Once more, though, I don't want apple to change anything. I want them
to take this concept, now that they have seen the interest (and
showing them the interest is my reason for starting this thread) and
put it into iOS themselves. This requires no change to the TOS for
developers, since the keyboard is *not* an app and is *not* in any way
supported by a third party; it is apple all the way. I am hopeful that
apple can see this, and understand that the blindness market for iOS
is very interested here. Besides, they have a history of taking ideas
from apps they did not approve, and incorporating those ideas (such as
the camera improvements in 5.0 - those are from jailbreak apps).

Re: Braille Touch: please help get Apple onboard

2012-02-26 Thread Mike Arrigo
Here is one reason among many why android is much more flexible, adding this
functionality will not have any restrictions. Yes, Apple does not allow adding
other keyboards, or input methods as they might be called. The thing is, if
Apple allows this one, other developers will want to do the same thing. That
may not be a bad thing, alternative keyboards may be a good thing, but I would
not count on Apple changing their policy on this one. Also their thought could
be, the built in on screen keyboard is already accessible, why not use that?
That is a valid point, guess time will tell on this one.

Re: Braille Touch: please help get Apple onboard

2012-02-26 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys.
Well, I can't imagine how this would be an advantage, but then, this is no flat
screen, no way, for the year 2010 speaking here. Back in 2010, I couldn't
imagine how we could do flat screens. When I hear about flat screens these
days, I think, does it work like the iPhone, and if it doesn't I don't want it.
I write very fast in braille. I probably braille faster than I type. Now that I
have Siri, I don't use my keyboard on the iPhone as much. Somebody I know made
the incredible comment that she thought sighted people would learn braille so
they could increase their typing speed on the iPhone. I can kind of see sighted
people learning a few things, but really, I just can't see sighted people doing
that. My sighted husband still uses a cheat sheet to write grade 1, and he
sometimes writes unique braille.

I, for one, think there are some more pressing issues for us. For one thing, I
just had to go use that desktop machine running under Vista to get some tax
forms done. I'm reluctant to put
Windows on my Mac as some of you have, so I sat in the other room for several
hours today with two computers in the office, one of which was the Mac. I know
how to do tax forms, no problem, but going back and forth to get numbers, etc.
slowed me down considerable.

About once a year, and sometimes more often, I really need that program to fill
out PDF forms. I hate PDF files.

Regards,
Gigi

Mail Mail and spell check

Hi.
I set my spell check to go off before the message is sent. But just discovered
that if I decide the go back and look at the sentence I put the word in there
doesn't seem to be a way out. Pressing escape on the spell check causes the
spell check to end and the message to be sent. Did I make a mistake using this
setting?

Re: Braille Touch: please help get Apple onboard

2012-02-26 Thread Alex Hall
Again, I don't want them to change their guidelines to let any app
developer add keyboards. What I want is for them to take the code and
use it as a keyboard in iOS, not an app in any way. So, when you
unpack an iPhone running a version of iOS with the keyboard in it
(probably 6 as 5.1 is already in beta), there is no "braille keyboard"
app hangin out on your home screen. Rather, it is just there, like the
foreign language keyboards are there.

As to advantage: in a word, yes. I use qwerty and braille entry about
equally, probably leaning more toward qwerty actually, and I am very
fast with both. Qwerty on iOS, though, is different since it is not
just typing, it is having to find a character, make sure it is right,
wait for it to be entered, then repeat. No muscle memory and a lot of
moving one finger make it a slow and inefficient typing method, and
anyone, sighted or blind, will tell you the same (at least they have
in my experience). Braille on iOS, though, allows for typing with no
moving all over the screen and with the ability to type from memory.
Yes, you can memorize the key positions of the qwerty keyboard, but
getting off by one can result in very odd words, especially if you
don't take the time to listen to the selected character before
entering, you get offset a character, and you keep going from that new
reference point.
Don't compare your typing in braille to typing with a keyboard.
Rather, compare your braille typing to the onscreen keyboard (not
using Siri) and see if it isn't faster to use braille. Also, onscreen
braille is not the same as onscreen qwerty, since there is nothing to
wait for and no moving to do. I hope I explained this well.

Alex,

With all do respect and coming from a Braille user; I think this is going to be
a very difficult road. You are essentially asking APple to allow any developer
of such the ability to have the same acces. There is already a Braille entry
app out there and despite the fact it is not quite the same thing, you have to
offer the same access. Furthermore, I cannot imagine trying to Braille on the
iPhone screen myself, so I'm not sure (and I speak for myself) this is going to
be particularly easy to work with. Is this really going to offer any advantage
to users? Is there truly a benefit to be had? I think these are reasonable
questions. Now as a reminder because I know some will get pretty spun-up, I am
a Braille user myself, but I arguably can out type myself when it comes to
Braille. So, again, an interesting idea I just think that APple would have to
implement as another keyboard and not as an app.

Re: Braille Touch: please help get Apple onboard

2012-02-26 Thread Alex Hall
Of course. I never said they should remove the other keyboard, and it
should not be the default when vo is on. Rather, it needs to be one
keyboard option, whether accessed through the rotor or in keyboard
settings (and hence via the "next keyboard" button). After all, a good
part of iOS' appeal is that I can hand my iPod to a sighted person so
they can read something interesting or take a turn in a game, and I
would not want anything less than what is currently available as that
would take away from the experience. I feel that a braille keyboard
would simply add to it, provided that, as you said, it remains an
option the user can choose to employ or not as the situation dictates.

Braille Touch: please help get Apple onboard

2012-02-26 Thread Alex Hall
Hello all,
There has been much discussion about the new Braille Touch app lately.
For anyone who missed it, this is an app coming out sometime this year
that lets users type in braille on an iOS or Android device.
Basically, you hold the device sideways, the home button to your right
or left. You then place three fingers on either end of the screen and
start typing. This beats the current braille entry app out there
because (1) it will be free and (2) it lets you enter the character
all at once, not a row at a time.

Here is where it needs your help: Apple's developer guidelines and
terms of service state that, basically, no app can add its own
keyboard to the keyboards available in iOS. this means that there is
no way to use the braille keyboard outside the app; no writing texts
or emails with it, no using it to do a search, no nothing. Yes, you
can use the app and then copy and paste, but if you just want to write
a quick email, add a contact, or even edit a document, you can't take
advantage of braille. Apple needs to know that we (blind and visually
impaired users of iOS) want and need this functionality in iOS. Please
take a couple minutes to send a message to accessibil...@apple.com.
Tell them you want them to include Braille Touch's keyboard in iOS so
that it can be used where ever you need to enter text, in place of the
on-screen QWERTY keyboard that iOS currently forces you to use. Point
out that this keyboard transforms the iOS line of products from PDAs
with great accessibility into true braille devices. Most of all, tell
them how important it is to you that this feature be included
system-wide as soon as possible. Offer any further suggestions,
testimonials, and anything else you think will help, but please take
the time to send accessibil...@apple.com a message asking them to take
this massive step into the future of accessibility. Thanks for your
time and effort. Also, please send this request to anyone else who can
help (other lists, friends or family who use iOS, braille instructors
familiar with iOS... anyone). Remember that the more interest Apple
sees in this, the more likely they are to take notice and do something
about it. They have always been good at listening to feedback from
their accessibility market, so let's take advantage of that to push
for this braille keyboard.

Re: Ical question

2012-02-26 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Oh Mark,

I just realise that I have been talking about the address book. Please forgive
me for that as I must have been very tired when I wrote that first message and
I had been in my address book yesterday and thought it was the calendar for no
good reason.

But yes, interact with the entries on your calendar and you need to interact
again with the information once you find an entry that you want to read. I
normally use the calendar on my I phone as it is much easier than my Mac
although I have entered dates and events using my Mac Book Pro and when putting
in new events, I normally do command N for new, then vo right tro where the
title and location is to go, and so on until the fields are all filled in, once
I want to go to a particular entry, stop interacting, then vo right until I get
to the scroll area, interact twice to read the information.

Again please accept my apology.

Kawal.

 Hello Mark.

I suggest if you are using the Ical on your mac, make sure your contacts
are in table view then when you get to what entry you want to hear, stop
interacting with that entry, go to the scroll area and interact twice and
vo right arrow through that entry. That is how I do it. You can also
install a wigit or you have a wigit which you will find (forget where it
is) as I've not used them yet, and there you can view your calendar
 entries.

Please someone correct me if there is a better way to use the calendar.

 Kawal.

Re: Continuous Reading in Ibooks on iPhone 4S

2012-02-26 Thread Esther
Hi Mike,

Just to expand on my comment about issuing the two-finger flick down from the
text area of the book to get continuous reading going in iBooks. Since this
gesture is meant to "read all" on the current page, starting from your present
position, if you wanted to find out about the page chooser at the bottom of the
screen the first time you checked the layout of controls in iBooks, and were
starting from the buttons for Library and table of contents, you wouldn't want
VoiceOver to keep reading to the end of the book before telling you that there
were additional controls at the bottom of the page.

So what happens is that a two-finger flick down initiated from the area with
button controls at the top of the screen just reads the text that is on the
current page, then goes on to read the controls at the bottom of the screen.
But if you initiate the two-finger flick down from within the text area, your
"read all from present point" gesture continues to read through the text area,
only, and will automatically go on to the next page.

This originally confused me, too, the first time I encountered it and didn't
have VO read the rest of the page. But then it made sense that it would work
that way.

Most people touch the center of the screen when they do their two-finger flick
down, so that's why they automatically get the continuous reading.

You'll still notice a slight pause when you reach the end of the current page.
That's because iBooks does a simulated page turn graphic. This annoyed the
heck out of some early reviewers (who were not visually impaired. Andy Ihnatko
wrote in his initial, otherwise positive, review of iBooks for the Chicago Sun:
"I do wish I could disable the fancy page-curl animation. On an iPhone 3GS, at
least, there’s a slight, but annoying, additional pause as the app does a whole
lot of math.") If this really annoys you, changing the font size to be small
will put a lot more text on the screen before you get that slight pause.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Continuous Reading in Ibooks on iPhone 4S

2012-02-26 Thread Esther
Hi Mike,

Try doing the two-finger flick down from the middle of the text page. For
example, if you're reading in the page, do a two-finger tap to stop. Then do a
two-finger flick down. Usually when you're in the text area this will work for
continuous reading. Or you can try to touch the center of the screen for the
text area first, then do the two finger flick down.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

2012-02-26 Thread Mike Busboom
Hello Jane,

That's the problem. A two-finger flick down reads the current page, but reading
is halted at the end of the page. I have been unsuccessful at having
continuous read to work. I am read the current page from start to finish, but

re: apple tv question:

2012-02-26 Thread Chenelle Hancock
hi all,
i just only purchased an apple tv about three months ago. furthermore, i did
not have any problems with setting it up. i i have an h.d.l.c..d tv thus all
i had to do is to get another h.d.m.i. caple and connect it to the back of
the apple tv and then hook the other piece to the back of the tv. then i
pressed the lower right button on the small slender remote control that comes
with the apple tv three times in order to turn on voice over. afterwards, i
had my aunt put in the internet code and password in order to hook up to
netflix and the internet etc.. afterwards, it was a total breeze for me to
work. i have never regretted purchasing the apple tv at all either. i had
purchased movies, and tv shows from just using my apple tv and i really do
enjoy it better then watching cable for the most part. the only piece of
apple equipment that i do not have in my hands is an i-pad 3 and that does not
come out until march,7/12. but i will wait to get it until later on in the
summer etc..
take care everyone sincerely, chenelle.

Continuous Reading in Ibooks on iPhone 4S

2012-02-26 Thread Mike Busboom
Hello everyone,

A couple of weeks ago, I downloaded the book on Siri and have started to read
it. The navigation works reasonably well, i.e. I can go to specific pages and
read a page in its entirety. Where I am having a problem, however, is getting
VoiceOver to read continuously. At present, at least with the approach that
seems to be working for me, I have to go to the page chooser and flick to the
next page..

Is there a way to get iBooks to do continuous scrolling or get VoiceOver to
automatically "turn pages and thus ensure continuous reading," as it were? I
am staying with a friend who has an iPad and he tells me that he is able to get
this to work. He puts his iPad in Landscape mode and can see two pages at a
time. Would putting my iPhone in Landscape Mode yield the same results? I
tried,but was unsuccessful.

Kindest regards to all, with thanks in advance,

Mike

Re: Interesting accessibility experience yesterday

2012-02-26 Thread Mr. L. Alexander
the beauty for me regarding this is not only being able to walk in and road
test newer apple hardware but also being able to demonstrate voiceover to apple
staff or reseller staff as well as requests from companies who have been made
aware that V.I. clients are coming to consider investing in a mac and ask me to
demonstrate and train where required. Tea and biscuits anyone? yep...

you can't get that with windows.

a. that beautiful apple chime is always a reward for owning a mac. would be
nice if we could be given the option of choosing the pitch of the apple chime
to our systems. I say this from all my time working with older macs where each
chip had a different sample and 2 in particular hold a certain sound passion
for me.

Naw, that's what we're all on the hunt for. I will hit the app store

Re: How do I select all on the I pone?

Hi Jenny
I have another suggestion about how to speed up the selecting of messages on
your iPhone. If you go into settings, and then go to mail can't remember
exactly where it is an on settings you can find deselect by conversation. That
way you can go into edit when you bring up your inbox, and select the
conversations that you don't wish to read this will really speed up the
selecting process.

Abbyy Finereader express

2012-02-26 Thread Becky Knaub
Hi All,
So I am getting this program as a birthday present, can anyone tell me how it
works? Can it do things similar to Kurzweil on the PC? Can it take PDF's from
school that are blank as far as VO is concerned into readable images? I wonder
if it could work with bookshare books in converting them into text edit
documents. Has anyone tried it? How well does this program work with VO? Does
anyone know if the epson printer scanner that is wireless and comes with the
Mac is able to do the scanning we as blind people require?

Thanks

Becky

Re: I can't figure out Dash Board

2012-02-26 Thread Esther
Hi Ray,

Dashboard navigation seems very different in Lion, and I didn't use it a lot
before. However, try bringing up window chooser menu VO-F2-F2 and going to the
dashboard menu. You should be able to navigate to the weather widget, and also
go to the widget bar. This seems to be correctly set up for my location, by the
way. In the earlier versions, you had to change this from Cupertino by
clicking on the info button to access the back of the widget and fill in a new
location.

Before Lion I could just navigate to the widgets, add, and delete them. But I
only moved to Lion this month, and this is the first time trying dashboard.
There are probably shortcuts for working with widgets in dashboard.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
