has anyone gotten Growl to work for announcing Dropbox changes

Hello,

I have been playing with Growl 2.0 under Mountain Lion and have yet to get
it to see my Dropbox changes and announce them. Has anyone gotten this to
work? For example, announcing when a file is added to my Dropbox folder.

Growl is problematic as it is. Although it worked on my Macbook Pro it
did not work on my friend Gary Price's Macbook. Somehow I got Dropbox to
notify me via a standard box, and this is built into the app. The only
thing I can think of is the notification centre is involved.

Press vo-F1 twice to open the application chooser menu. One of which

Re: iPad

2012-10-03 Thread Chris
I think an audio demonstration would be ideal, as then people will be
aware of what will happen when a factory reset is performed on all
iDevices. It doesn't matter what is being used, however I saw a message
on my newly restored iPhone last night saying, "activating iPhone". This
is during the setup process. It was successful, but just saying as I
don't think this appears on either the iPod Touch or iPad.

Just some thoughts.

Gigi, you're still not understanding though what we're trying to
explain. This explains why it didn't work.

The tripple click of the home key won't work unless several conditions
have been met.

1. The user gets the IPhone out of the box for the first time, powers
it on for the very first time, and as soon as the first initial screen
to set up the device comes up, they then press the home key 3 times
quickly in a row.

2. The user must go into settings, accessibility, tripple click home,
and set it to toggle voiceover.

Here's the thing though that you need to understand. The tripple
clicking of the home key, to toggle it on/off as you all were testing,
and trying to do, will, not, work, unless you either manually set it
to do so through settings, or unless you mash the home key the 3 times
quickly after very very first turnhing on the phone. I don't mean,
turn on the phone after it already has been before, then immediately
press home 3 times. That won't necessarily work. You literally have
to do it initially the very very very first time ever that the device
is powered on or is reset to factory default settings with all data
being wiped.

I guarantee, if you was to buy an I O S device from Apple, take it out
of the box, put the sim card in, if there need to be one depending on
the network it's being used with, then hold the sleep/power button on
the top right of the device, power it on, then as soon for the first
time as it ever gets power, and comes on, as soon as you see the
screen that says welcome, and you then immediately press the home key,
the round concaved key at the front bottom center just below the
screen 3 times quickly as a tripple click, Voiceover would then start
talking. It would be a bit quiet, and you may have to turn it up, but
ultimately, it should turn on.

The reason it wasn't working when you all did it, is because someone
had already gotten through those welcome screens. They'd already
selected their language, time zone, etc etc and initially set up the
device. Once they've done this, if they didn't turn Voiceover on at
that time with the tripple click, as they were setting it up, then it
won't work unless you manually go in and turn that setting on. If you
do it during the initial setup screen, it will turn Voiceover on, plus
will set it so that from that point forward, no matter what, hitting
the home key 3 quick times will toggle Voiceover on/off.

I have an old IPod, which is pretty much identical to an IPhone only
without the hardware gut of the phone, but same exact system/OS. It's
still I O S. If this doesn't make sense, I'll try making an audio
recording with it after restoring it to factory default and show you
what I mean.

Chris.

Re: system dialog but not there

Yeah, I had an elusive system dialog sitting around here for a while and could
never seem to access it. I knew the update for 10.8.2 had been recently
announced so I decided to manually look for it through the app store and after
applying that, I haven't seen that dialog anymore. I'll have to try the

Well, if it helps, just now, I noticed that when my contacts do things on Skype
that trigger Grouel alerts, Voice over seems to entirely loose focus no matter
what I'm doing or what ever app I'm in; mail for example. Just now, before I
even got in to mail, I noticed that a Grouel alert was triggered by a contact

Re: system dialog but not there

Now I might be wrong but I believe that it is a small pop up window that gives
us the name of the contact visually.. They go away only after a few seconds. By
the time you switch to Skype and hit the window chooser it has already gone
away.
Personaly I find that hearing if a contact has gone online or offline is quite
annoying so I turn them off in the Preferences.

Some more questions about Windows 7 on the Mac

2012-10-03 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I've had Windows xp running in vmware fusion on my macbook pro. Now i have just
purchased Windows 7 and it will be here on Friday. I did follow the earlier
bootcamp thread but I have some additional questions.

1. Can i install Windows 7 with vmware fusion to initially play with it and
then reactivate it after I install it using bootcamp as long as I'm not going
to try to use the same key both with vmware and its separate partition once I
have it installed separately?

2. Somebody mentioned importing an installation from vmware to the bootcamp
installation. is this possible and does it require less sighted help? Are there
other caveats of which I should be aware if I decide to do that?

3. If i want to use my multi-link bluetoot keyboard with Windows in the
bootcamp partition, can I do this? I realize this will be a full-fledged
Windows installation but I wondered if the drivers involved include bluetooth
support.

4. When I go to install Window-eyes in the bootcamp Windows partition and
windoweyes says it has to reboot to start the install, will it automatically
restart in Windows or will I have to use the option key to make sure it does so
if I have Macos as the default? Maybe I should just make Windows the default
while i'm doing the windoweyes install just to keep things less complicated? I
won't need to hurry to install windoweyes as I also have System Access.

Thanks.

Re: typing at fast speeds with the Alex voice ...

2012-10-03 Thread Mike Arrigo
The nuance voices are very responsive when typing. Personally I think
Alex is fine when typing, at least in my case. You might check out the
Infovox voices from Acapela, though I think their responsiveness is similar.

Original message:

Hello,

I have noticed that typing very quickly on my Mac using Alex that it is not
very responsive (not keeping up as I type). Now, I do have keyboard speech
set to echo characters. Switching to Samantha seems to be a bit better but I
was just curious what others impressions are as far as a good voice that is
very responsive (even if purchased)?

Re: need help with fusion error.

2012-10-03 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Hopefully you won't have to create the vm again. However, just in case you do,
here is a tip:

If you have a version of the vm on your backup - for instance, I know that
superduper completely backs it up - you can delete the folder for that virtual
machine in ~/Documents/Virtual Machines. the defective virtual machine. Then
you can drag and drop your backup version in finder to the Virtual Machines
window. As I recall, you then have to open it in finder before it actually
shows up again as a virtual machine in your virtual machine library. You only
lose whatever you did since the last backup. Of course this is assuming that
re-introduction of the backup doesn't give you the same error. It really seems
that this should be fixable in settings as Mike says but I would have been
furious if I had needed to reinstall Windows XP over again!

Can't update flas player using Tab key

2012-10-03 Thread Blinkin
Happy hump day all,
So in the past I have been able to update my flash player by using the
Tab key to jump through the different buttons and areas.
I have been trying to do this now though and it is not working.
It let's me check the box to agree to the terms but once I tab to the
Agree button and press VO space or any other combination it just removed the
checkmark.
Does anyone know how I can solve this problem?
Thanks and take care!

updated to fusion 5.1
now i am just waiting for it to finish installing. because it would not let me

you can solve the problem by pressing the space bar without the VO keys. I had

Why would anyone want to have a typing echo at all, unless one were learning
the keyboard for the first time? In which case, the lag won't really matter,
as typing speed will be negligible. For anyone typing faster than 50-60 WPM,
much less 120 or so which most people type at, having typing echo set to
anything other than nothing is just annoying and inefficient.

Re: typing at fast speeds with the Alex voice ...

2012-10-03 Thread Traci
I use Samantha compact.

When I first got my Mac last year, I tried Alex for a month or so, but couldn't
get use to him. It was one thing I missed from my windows screen reader, being
able to set different rates for keyboard, screen, mouse.

If it was an option, I'd probably have Sam-Compact for keyboard, and Alex for
reading.

watching videos via chrome browser

2012-10-03 Thread Traci
Hi all,

I finally installed google chrome. It is nice how videos on hulu & Facebook
play so easily. What I'm struggling with, is any keyboard shortcuts.

I'm visually impaired, so I enjoy watching videos in full screen. I can't find
anyway to play/pause videos or get them in full screen.

Any help is appreciated. I'm very new to chrome.

Thanks,

You can do this in the VoiceOver Utility. Check the additional voice
options in the voices tab of the speech category.

2012-10-03 Thread Alex Hall
Not really. You can't change, for instance, the voice used in a say all command
versus the voice used when reading line by line. Yes, you can change the voice
for things like typing, content, menus, and so on, and you can set up
activities to use voices in different apps, but there is no way to set the rate
and voice for say all reading. If I missed it, please let me know.

IPhone/IPod to IPad 3rd Gen

2012-10-03 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I just bought me an IPad 3rd generation! I love this thing, but I have a
couple a questions that are presenting me with a slight bit of trouble.

I always use the device in portret mode where by the lock sleep/power button
is on the top right edge rim, then my volume buttons, and mute/lock rotation
switch is on the the right hand side, with my home key in the bottom center.

What I am noticing, and I don't know if this is because I have more screen
realistate than on the IPhone 4S, but if I hit an ajuster slider, say a
volume control, or a combo box on a web page, etc. basically just an
ajuster, if I 1 finger flick down, usually not always, but usually, it
works, but one finger flicking up to increment the ajuster is not working.
I wind up moving my Voiceover cursor focus away from the ajuster, and God
knows where. A perfect example a this was in settings/brightness and
wallpaper. I tried to turn the screen brightness up, as it was only at 30
something percent, and seeing I have some vision, light, and color, I wanted
it as bright as it could go. I could move it down, but trying to move it up
to 100% wouldn't work. It kept jumping to other things on the screen. It's
almost like, when I put my finger on the screen, it's taking that initial
contact on the screen as a one finger tap, which of course moves my focus.
I then had to flick back to the slider, and try all over again.

I noticed if I put it in landscape mode, which I don't prefer, with the home
key facing to the right, then try it, it works very consistently both up and
down. Yes, I am on I O S 6. The person who I bought this thing from had
already updated it before she gave it to me.

The other final question I have is dealing with the contacts app. I see the
list of contacts, and I do! understand the concept that on an IPad, unlike
an IPod or IPhone, the screen is in a 2way split. You have your main
options going virtically down the left and then as you double tap them, the
right portion reexpands with the appropriate content. OK, I get that
entirely, but what I am not quite seeing is why, I finally found the contact
table index ajuster which looks like they've moved from the far right side
to the far left side of the screen. Anyway, I flicked down to B. I then
was looking for the last name Bloomgren. I kept seeing things though like
Amazon, or maybe Christy Meador, etc. it's almost like it's skipping some
of my contacts. Do they not all go down the left hand side of the screen?
Or, are the list of contacts in two different collumns, not one like on the
IPhone. I think that's what is confusing me, more than anything. I don't
understand the concept of how the contacts are arranged.

Any help is appreciated.

Chris.

capslock vs. insert in laptop layout

2012-10-03 Thread Lindsay Yazzolino
Hi,

I have been using VMWare Fusion with JAWS in laptop layout
successfully for quite some time now, but am currently running into a
slight problem. I have remapped my right command key to insert, and
within JAWS settings configured
insert to serve as my JAWS key. The problem I'm encountering is that
the capslock and insert keys do not always behave the same way. For
instance insert+F9 and capsllock F9 does not perform the same
function. Will I need to establish another key mapping for capslock,
or has anyone found another, better solution? Thanks in advance!

Re: capslock vs. insert in laptop layout

2012-10-03 Thread Bart Bunting
Hi,

The solution I use is to remap the capslock key to control in keyboard
preferences on the mac. Then I use sharp keys to remap left control to
capslock in vmware. I have tried using keyremap and PCKeyboardhack
to do this but have found it inixplicably unstable at times.

The setting is under modifier keys in keyboard preferences as far as I
remember.

This solution is rock solid as long as you are happy with the following
caveats:
- You no longer have a capslock key in mac. I never used it anyway.
- You no longer have a left control in windows. The right control works
  just fine.
- Left control in windows is also capslock.
- Capslock in vmware with jaws behaves as expected.

Re: capslock vs. insert in laptop layout

2012-10-03 Thread Esther
Hi Lindsay and Bart,

First of all, the reason for the problem you and other VMWare Fusion Windows
users encounter with remapping the caps lock key is that Apple modified the
behavior of the caps lock key in 2007 to require that it be held down longer to
prevent accidental activation. The original knowledge base articles are not
online (although they can be found by a search of the internet archive), but
I'll quote a bit from what was originally available as article 306811, since I
believe in substantiating my claims with original source material:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306811 (not available now)

Apple Keyboard (2007): Caps Lock modified to reduce accidental activation
Last Modified on: November 09, 2007
Article: 306811
Issue or symptom
Pushing the Caps Lock key on the aluminum Apple Keyboard may not immediately
activate the Caps Lock function.

Products affected
Apple Keyboard (2007)
Apple Wireless Keyboard (2007)
Solution
The Caps Lock function has been modified to reduce accidental activation. The
key must now be held down slightly longer in order to activate the Caps Lock
function.

Keywords: ktech kybd kmosx4 kawk kmosx5

This was a deliberate decision, which I think was made to accommodate
individuals with motion disabilities, although I don't have a direct source to
back up that conjecture. I believe that this only affects the caps lock key
used on the Mac directly under Mac OS X or through a virtual machine -- there
should be no activation delays if you're using the caps lock key on a Mac
keyboard in Bootcamp, because the Windows keyboard drivers don't have this
delay.

Bart is referring to Eric Caron's posts and podcasts about using
KeyRemap4MacBook and the PCKeyboardhack from the same source to both remap the
caps lock key to act as the VO-keys (Control+Option) when pressed in
combination with other keys. The side bonus is that the caps lock key works as
the JAWS insert key. I'd guess possible reasons for the instability that Bart
may have seen are: 1) the KeyRemap4MacBook and PCKeyboardhack configurations
assume that no other key remapping software is being used at the same time.
Generally people have handled the software remapping for Windows in the VM
either by using Sharp Keys as a Windows registry hack or with the VMWare
preferences settings. I believe that Eric disabled his Sharp Keys
configurations after moving to the KeyRemap4MacBook and PCKeyboardhack
combination, and this may be the reason he has found this to be a stable
configuration. There are other software applications that contain key remapping
options that you may be running, and which could produce conflicts and
instability. And I've routinely disabled all the Exposé key assignments in
System Preferences, ever since the (visual-only) Exposé feature appeared in
Leopard, so that their hardware F-key assignments don't produce conflicts. 2)
The version of PCKeyboardhack that you download depends on which version of Mac
OS X you're running. This is probably not an issue if most users are on Lion
or Mountain Lion, but you should be aware that there are different versions of
the .dmg file for, say, Snow Leopard. 3) The original description of the
simplified revised procedure requires downloading the version 7.8.17 dmg file
(not the default version) at the special link:
http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/files/KeyRemap4MacBook-7.8.17.dmg
4) It also requires checking the box for "Change Caps Lock" as well as
setting the keycode value to 110 in the PCKeyboardhack preference pane.

I'm not a JAWS or Windows user, so I can't check any of this directly. I
posted general instructions about using KeyRemap4MacBook on the mac-access list
at the end of August, just before I had to go on extended travel with very
limited internet access. Eric contacted the developer about the VO keys
modification for caps lock and did a great job with his podcast and directions.
(Also, I implemented the changes using the developer's original instructions
for modifying the preference panes to add a private xml file, rather than using
the custom dmg.)

Bart's solution can works as long as you don't end up with conflicting key
definitions among your various programs. You can also disable KeyRemap4MacBook
at any time without un-installing it by using the preference pane.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

I am most likely taking this point a bit far but do you get the point? this
isn't a music list or an ITunes gift card list but a list to discuss the mac.
hope this makes you understand where we are coming from.
if you have something to promote you set up a mailing list.
then you get people on them. point said. i digress.
let's get back to talking mac related stuff shall we? thanks.

Re: described content on iTunes, plus purchasing questions

2012-10-03 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey guys, Just wanted to chime in here, as it really is ashame how
ignored we the blind are when it comes to described video. For
example, I have yet to find a Netflix title through Netflix streaming
offer descriptive video. Then again, I think that Netflix just
recently was pressured into providing the close captioning option for
their titles. Unfortunately, we the blind have such a weak lobby that
I don't see this as an option anytime soon. Considering that the 21st
Century Communications Accessibility Act went into effect on July 1,
and none of the blind organizations had a mention of this historic
legislation on their websites, not sure who we would even approach
about addressing this. From the little research that I have done
neither Netflix, nor Amazon, nor Itunes offers any of their content
with descriptive video. For now, I rely on the movie feeds through
Serotek and sitting at my computer. Of course, I have a mac, and have
to use chrome which seems to be the only browser that works with this
fantastic content. The only problem is there is no way to rewind or
fast forward the content, which is a problem, especially if you have a
prblem with a movie which happened to me once. Would love to hear I am
wrong on some of this, so please do let me know. Thanks
