fan running all the time

2012-10-07 Thread Eric Oyen
hello folks.

I seem to be running into a problem where the fan on my macbook is running all
the time. the unit also seems to be running a lot warmer since I installed
lion. This machine is just 1 revision behind what would be supported for
mountain lion, so I cannot go there. anyway, does anyone know what is causing
this?

Hi Eric,
It could be just as simple as cleaning the vents. I am no tech, but that is
what I would try first.Do you have any kind of applecare with the machine? If
so, they may be able to help you diagnose your issue.

getting started with garage band

2012-10-07 Thread Paul Erkens
Dear listers,

I found a few podcasts about getting started in garage band, and I've listened
to these carefully. I'd like to be able to do a few different things with it
though, for which I did not really find a lot of stuff to get me started. Can
anyone please answer some or maybe all the following questions?

Say I have an audio track in wav format, or anything for that matter. Is garage
band a good tool to edit audio files? Can I normalize, copy, cut and paste
easily in garage band, using voiceover, or should I stick with amadeus pro to
do that type of job?

In windows, I use sonar to create bits of music I need. If I want to use garage
band, am I restricted to the built-in virtual instruments, or can I find other
instruments elsewhere?

When editing music created with virtual instruments, is it possible for us to
do things like editing timings for notes, going to a particular measure and
beat, and select, copy and paste material for virtual instrument tracks?

I'm very interested to find out about this, because the sounds of the built-in
garage band instruments are generally very promising. I don't have any
experience in garage band yet using voiceover on the mac. Please tell me what
you have found out already.

Thanks a lot for taking time to answer this.
Paul.

MacBook Pro changing timezones

2012-10-07 Thread Shen
Hi,
I just tried this week and found that VoiceOver is unable to interact with the
world map in the timezones tab under System Preferences. Because I have a
MacBook Pro, I don't have location services. So when I tried changing the
timezone, VoiceOver tells me no visible title to interact.
I emailed accessibility at Apple and they insisted VoiceOver is able to
interact and change the timezone.
So I'm wondering if anyone else with the latest Mountain Lion updates is able
to interact with the world map and change the timezone? Because I cannot for
some reason.
Thanks

Playing Flash Movies

2012-10-07 Thread Nicholas Parsons
HI guys,

I know this topic has been discussed at length before, but a Google search
didn't give me any answers and the Google Groups website itself is really
frustrating to read. So please forgive any repetition.

I know flash is basically inaccessible with Safari, except for where the movies
automatically play as in youtube. However, I thought I had read on this forum
before that Chrome works well for playing flash movies.

I tried playing flash movies with chrome but had no success. Still couldn't
find any play buttons or the like.

What's the trick for playing flash movies in Chrome? Or did I misunderstand
something and is flash just as inaccessible with Google Chrome as with Safari?

Cheers
Nic

Question About Building A Website

2012-10-07 Thread Scott Rumery

I have just registered my first web domain and I also installed Wordpress on it
so that I can easily blog on this site. My question to the list is; is there

better because eventually I would like to have sighted people coming to my site
as well as the blind community.

Does anyone have any advice on how a blind person can administer a website on a

Re: MacBook Pro changing timezones

2012-10-07 Thread Cheryl Homiak
you don't have to interact with the map at all. There's a time zone button to
the right of the map and a combo box for nearest city.
At any rate, if you do a down arrow on the combo box and then hit enter on the
city you want, you can change the city. In fact, once you do the down arrow and
vo says interacting with list, one item selected, you can start typing the
name of your city and it will either give you choices accordingly or you can
finish typing. Once you hit enter after choosing or typing the city you want,
stop interacting with vokeys-shift up arrow. So yes, accessibility is right
about this even though they didn't give you specific instructions.

SOS with iMovie please!

Hello all!
I was using iMovie OK, but now, some things seem to have changed, or I don't

When I select a clip from an event and try to paste in the project, It is

An other thing, How do I select very short parts of a clip to delete them? I
use the value indicators, but for example, is there a way to make my selection
to start at the reproduction cursor, so I just move the end of selection
indicator?
Thank you very much for your help, if somebody can give me a hand, I will
appreciate it very much, because I am doing a video that I need for twesday and
this is getting me cracy.
Thank you!

Re: boot camp

2012-10-07 Thread Phil Halton
yes, you can do it with a win7 installation CD - as long as its a full (not
an upgrade) licensed copy of windows7.

Read the bootcamp installation and setup guide for details about the
bootcamp side of the installation, and for the actual windows install,

www.blackViper.com

has an excellent step-by-step guide to installing windows7.

Use bootcamp assistant to download and burn the bootcamp drivers to a CD or
DVD. You'll install them after installing windows. Once windows is
installed, then you can install a screen reader and have at it.

Re: boot camp

2012-10-07 Thread Phil Halton

Wayne, I just did this yesterday, so its fresh in my mind. Here goes.

first I assume your MBP has a CD/DVD drive? if not then I can't help you.

if so, then, run bootcamp assistant, check the box for installing windows
and uncheck the box for downloading the bootcamp drivers as you already have
them.

On the next screen, set the partition size for bootcamp. I just pressed
divide equally which gives equal sizes to both Mac and Bootcamp windows.
If you want, you can interact with the divider or splitter thingy and change
the size of each partition as you like.

Now, insert your windows7 installation CD into the CD/DVD drive and press
install.

Bootcamp assistant will create the bootcamp (windows7) partition and reboot
into the windows installer.

Now, you need sighted assistance because there's no VO, and no way to have
speech until you complete the windows instal.

Get someone who's computer literate, preferably someone who uses windows7
all the time and can easily get around the screens with a mouse or the
keyboard. In other words, don't ask your 90 year old grandmother for sighted
assistance.

Once windows7 is fully installed and setup, insert the bootcamp drivers CD
and install them.

Finally, you can install a screen reader and windows will come up talking.

You'll Need:

1) your windows7 CD and the Product Key at the ready.
2) the bootcamp drivers CD.
3) your screen reader and its product key. I burned jaws12 installer package
onto a CD and had the registration key ready.

I think that's about it. Check out Black Viper's windows7 installation guide
thoroughly - it'll give you an idea of the steps involved in the win7
install.

Also, very important, during the win7 install, at the Disk Drives screen
where you're asked where you want to install windows, you MUST select the
Bootcamp partition that the assistant created. And, you must check the box
that says to Format thwe partition. Read the appropriate section in the
bootcamp install guide for more info on that.

Once you're past that screen, the remainder of the win7 install is fairly
straightforward. I had the BlackViper tutorial up on another machine and
used it to follow along step-by-step with my sighted assistant as he went
through the win7 install screens, so I know what he was doing.

Good Luck,

Re: selecting multiple items not in order?

2012-10-07 Thread Phil Halton
one slight correction, after interacting with the list or table, Pressing
VO+Command+space selects/deselects the items. Move to the next item you want
with VO up/down arrow and press VO+Command+space to select it. VO+Space will
not select the item.

you need to interact with the list or column.
  Then use control+command+option and space.
Next use vo+down arrow to the items you want to select and space with each
one.

  Thanks.

Re: MacBook Pro changing timezones

2012-10-07 Thread Shen
Thank you. Your explanation makes perfect sense.
Too bad Apple Accessibility isn't as clear with their emails.
The handful of times I contacted Apple Accessibility in the past, I have not
been impressed with the quality of their responses. Not to mention, whoever is
writing these emails don't even bother spellchecking. Hope other people have
better luck than I do.
I usually get more helpful answers on this list than Apple's Accessibility
department.

you don't have to interact with the map at all. There's a time zone button

At any rate, if you do a down arrow on the combo box and then hit enter on
the city you want, you can change the city. In fact, once you do the down
arrow and vo says interacting with list, one item selected, you can start
typing the name of your city and it will either give you choices accordingly
or you can finish typing. Once you hit enter after choosing or typing the
city you want, stop interacting with vokeys-shift up arrow. So yes,
accessibility is right about this even though they didn't give you specific
 instructions.

yes, you can do it with a win7 installation CD - as long as its a full (not
an upgrade) licensed copy of windows7.

Subject: Re: boot camp

Good Luck,

Nice concise instructions! Also, while i'm sure yu can also download it, when

save it as a pdf instead. While I'm doing all right with my vmware

it, without having to copy and update the files to the second mac. Both use
iTunes as their media player, but the downstairs mac is used by three people,
each with their own apple ID, so I can't just put my library on the downstairs
one with my account since I might not be the one who wants to listen. So, what
is the best solution? Of course, ideally we would go buy a new router, one with
NAS support, but those are kind of expensive, so what do people recommend until
then? Thanks.

Subject: getting started with garage band

Dear listers,

I found a few podcasts about getting started in garage band, and I've
listened to these carefully. I'd like to be able to do a few different
things with it though, for which I did not really find a lot of stuff to get
me started. Can anyone please answer some or maybe all the following
questions?

Say I have an audio track in wav format, or anything for that matter. Is
garage band a good tool to edit audio files? Can I normalize, copy, cut and
paste easily in garage band, using voiceover, or should I stick with amadeus
pro to do that type of job?

In windows, I use sonar to create bits of music I need. If I want to use
garage band, am I restricted to the built-in virtual instruments, or can I
find other instruments elsewhere?

When editing music created with virtual instruments, is it possible for us
to do things like editing timings for notes, going to a particular measure
and beat, and select, copy and paste material for virtual instrument tracks?

I'm very interested to find out about this, because the sounds of the
built-in garage band instruments are generally very promising. I don't have
any experience in garage band yet using voiceover on the mac. Please tell me
what you have found out already.

Thanks a lot for taking time to answer this.
Paul.

Re: Connectin a Braille note to iPhone 4S.

2012-10-07 Thread Alex Hall
My first thought is that you tried to pair using the bluetooth menu on one
device or the other. As I stated in the podcast, make sure to erase any
pairings from both devices first, then turn the iphone off and back on and
reset the apex. It is an apex, right? Also,, double check the name by going to
options, connectivity, setup, computer name. The name must be the default,
something like APEX000123 (note the word apex is in all caps).

Speced out MacBook Pro available now

2012-10-07 Thread Hai Nguyen Ly
Good evening all:
Ever since I got my wife the new iPad and an iPhone, I've realized that her
computing usage has changed drastically. It seems that her specced out 2011
MacBook Pro is spending more time in the case than being used. The
specifications for the device are as follows:
2011 Macbook Pro 13 8,1, 2.7 intel core i7, 16gb ddr3 RAM 256GB SSD currently
running SnowLeopard, however could ship with 10.8.2.
Asking price: $1200+Shipping. The device is in excellent cosmetic condition
with all original packaging and software. I would prefer payment via Paypal.
Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions.

So does the iTunes sharing not do what you want? Go into Preferences and

Re: Playing Flash Movies

2012-10-07 Thread Chris Blouch
Hadn't heard that before. I thought the issue was a fundamental one in
that Adobe did not hook Flash to the Apple accessibility stuff so
Voiceover has no insight as to what is going on inside the Flash widget.
Some flash video players have external controls for pause/play
constructed from HTML links and the link so those work fine but the ones
that use flash for video playback and the controls are nigh impossible
to use on OSX.

Cheers

Re: shaedia over a network?

2012-10-07 Thread Alex Hall
Well, I hadn't realized that was there. It looks like, until I can get
networked storage, this should work. I'll have to see how to access it on other
machines, but that should be easy enough.

disappearing keystrokes?

2012-10-07 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I've noticed that, once every few days, a few keystrokes will not register. For
instance, my email about sharing music over my home network had the subject
sharedia over local network, but I had actually written sharing media over
local network. What is going on here? I have keyboard echo completely off, so
I should hear any busy messages that might block typing. However, I not only
hear no such messages, but I also have found that, when an app is busy and I am
typing, it fills in what I wrote after it stops being busy. Is it just me and
my minuscule amount of ram (2gb on a 2011 mini), or is something else perhaps
going on? Thanks.

A Question About The Latest Version of the Messaging App on Both iOS and Mac

2012-10-07 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I am posting this to both lists.

I just updated my Mac, today, to the latest version.

In the release notes, it states that the latest version of the Messaging App
now allows for people to send messages to your phone number and you will see
them on your Mac.

I Interpret this to mean that, assuming you are using iMessage on your iOS
device and, assuming that you are signed into the same iCloud account on
both your Mac and iOS device, you should see incoming messages sent to your
iOS phone number, on the Mac, in the Messages app, as well as on your phone.

Am I wrong?

I just received a text message from a fellow iOS iMessage user on my phone
but it did not show up in the Messages app on my Mac.

Do I need to enable something new in order to get this to work?

All feedback welcomed.

Mark

troubles sharing reminder lists: vo and the edit field

2012-10-07 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I'm trying to share a shopping list in reminders with two people. I shared it
with the first as a test, and when that worked I shared it with the second. The
fierst person then received a notice that I had removed them from the sharing,
which was not my intent - I want all three of us to have access, not just two
at a time. Now, I'm trying to add both of their names to the edit field in the
share window, but vo is behaving very oddly, not at all like the smooth and
easy access you find in the to or cc fields of the mail app. Vo never says when
a name auto-completes, and that completion seems to not always happen. It also
reports all text as embedded text, whatever that means, and crashes when I
press space or comma to try to separate two names. There also seems no way to
see with whom I am sharing a list; I sort of expected a table of contacts with
an add button next to it. Does anyone have experience sharing lists? If so,
have you shared with multiple users? The documentation is unclear as to whether
this is possible or not, but it seems to indicate it is. Any help would be
great, thanks.

Re: described content on iTunes, plus purchasing questions

2012-10-07 Thread Brian Fischler
Actually a lot of movies are providing descriptive video content. You
can do a google search for movies that are released each year with
descriptive video, and at least the numbers are going up each year.
Several DVDs are being released with the audio descriptive track. This
is where my problem lies if you can purchase the physical DVD which
comes with an option to watch the movie with a descriptive audio track
than why can't Apple and/or Netflix offer that as an option that is
what my problem is with. I have emailed Accessibility at Apple several
times, and have had a nice running dialogue with them on several
issues and do appreciate all their hard work, but am getting a little
sick of hearing we are aware of the problem, but can't say when there
will be a fix. I would like to to see at least one issue I have
addressed with them be fixed, otherwise, I just feel like I am wasting
my time with them. And yes, I do know these things take time. I have
been emailing Apple for years.

On Oct 4, 12:30 am, Brian Fischler blindga...@gmail.com wrote:
Hey guys, Just wanted to chime in here, as it really is ashame how
ignored we the blind are when it comes to described video. For
example, I have yet to find a Netflix title through Netflix streaming
offer descriptive video. Then again, I think that Netflix just
recently was pressured into providing the close captioning option for
their titles. Unfortunately, we the blind have such a weak lobby that
I don't see this as an option anytime soon. Considering that the 21st
Century Communications Accessibility Act went into effect on July 1,
and none of the blind organizations had a mention of this historic
legislation on their websites, not sure who we would even approach
about addressing this. From the little research that I have done
neither Netflix, nor Amazon, nor Itunes offers any of their content
with descriptive video. For now, I rely on the movie feeds through
Serotek and sitting at my computer. Of course, I have a mac, and have
to use chrome which seems to be the only browser that works with this
fantastic content. The only problem is there is no way to rewind or
fast forward the content, which is a problem, especially if you have a
prblem with a movie which happened to me once. Would love to hear I am
wrong on some of this, so please do let me know. Thanks

  Hi all,
Is there described content available on iTunes? If so, how does one find it

Second, a more general purchasing question. When one buys a movie or tv
show on iTunes, does one then own it for life, or is it a rental-like
arrangement? I know I own the songs I buy, but I am not sure about longer
content with different licensing like tv shows or movies. Thanks.
