Spanish Ñ was Special Characters Question: Math Symbols

2012-12-09 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hello,

On as somewhat related note, is there an easy way to insert the Spanish Ñ in a
document? I tried pressing option in but it didn't work. I would like to avoid
having to add the Spanish keyboard layout for just one isolated incident.

Thanks for your help,

Strange error with Messages in Mountain Lion

2012-12-09 Thread Chris Gilland
This is very weird. When I boot my macbook into Mountain Lion, I get an alert
that pops up in the form of a dialog box which says Messages internal error:
There was a problem with Messages. You need to quit and open Messages again.

Has anyone ever seen this happen? I didn't even have messages running to start
with.

I'm not sure what this is based on, if it's hardware of software specific. I

Re: Latest Dropbox on Mountin Lion causes an odd issue with show desktop notifications?

2012-12-09 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Okay, I guess the first question is: how do I know if I have the latest version
of dropbox? Would I get an update notification?

I do have desktop notifications checked and I do get notified of changes on my
Mac running Mountain Lion but the notification is just announced and doesn't
interfere with anything I am doing. And it doesn't appear anywhere in the
notifications list in system preferences. Dropbox also appears in my extras
menu and I can check for changes there if I've missed anything.

I'm going to assume it's whatever account you are signed in to, even though

Chris,
I am not sure what version I am using my voiceover reads absolutely
nothing on the screen. The whole entire program is completely not
accessible. Which computer are you using? Are you using an Intel based
Mac? Back in the day I was able to use my Power Mac but since I upgraded
to an Intel MacBook Pro I have not been able to use the version that I
have. I will have to look into this version 11 that you have and hopefully
that will work. I don't think a podcast will do me any good seeing hell no
matter what I do nothing will read on my version of toast.

Re: iCloud and iTunes 11?

2012-12-09 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

It sounds like iTunes Match to me although that should only happen if you've
subscribed to iTunes Match. I guess it's possible that even if you don't use
iTunes Match, the default dialogs may ask the same questions. I do get that
option myself but I am subscribed to iTunes Match so I expect it.

Hi,

I've been using Splasm Software's checkbook 2 since 2009, and moved up to Pro
sometime this year. In neither version have I managed to rap my mind around
using splits or using the summaries.

I am especially interested in getting better at using the summaries. If anyone

Thanks,

iCloud and iTunes 11?

2012-12-09 Thread Kliphton
Okay, when I decided to put my iTunes library in a different location, and
went to delete the current media, it said "would you like to delete from the
cloud, or leave it in the cloud?" Something along those lines. Now I know
you can start watching something in iTunes and pick it up on your I Device,
but most of us didn't pay for mobile me before the iCloud domain was
available to the public, so my question is, what cloud is it putting your
content in, your iCloud account that you have to have to sink notes and take
advantage of photo stream, or your apple ID, that you use to sign in and buy
apps from the app store, since there is no known way to combine the 2 yet.
I'm going to assume it's whatever account you are signed in to, even though
I never tried accessing my media on my phone in iCloud, doubt I would have
seen it though. Any thoughts on this?

Latest Dropbox on Mountin Lion causes an odd issue with show desktop notifications?

2012-12-09 Thread Keith Hinton
Hi, folks:
Whenever I use the latest Dropbox version, on the Mac, I find that
VoiceOver does something odd whenever any notification comes up. All
I've done, is relink my system following a previous group of settings
I had, so can't determine as to why this happens.
Specificly, what happens is that whenever any notification now pops
up, rather than showing up for about 5 seconds or less, the
notification doesn't fade. Instead, I've had my focuss get redirected
at times, and have even had to use Control-Option-Shift-D to force my
focus back into the Finder.
So then, it gets stranger.
I bring up the window chooser, and what do I get?
"Untitled from Dropbox"
Then I read the notification text, followed by what VoiceOver labels
as a button.
pressing it will dismiss the notification, but I'd like the
notifications to return to the default behavior as Dropbox behaves
everywhere else on all other machines I own where the notifications
come up for about 3 seconds then simply close.
Unless a solution is even remotely possible, I will simply uncheck
show desktop notifications, at all expense of even knowing if files
are erased, updated, etc most likely.
I haven't tried this, but I guess that unchecking that means I won't
receive notifications at all.
Can anybody confirm this or suggest a better solution than being
constantly forced to bring up the window chooser and manually dismiss
every notification I receive from Dropbox?
I find this behavior personally an annoyance that I want rectified if
at all possible.
I'm running the latest Mountin Lion release.
Oh, and one other annoyance I wish Apple would rectify before the next
major release of the OS, is this VoiceOver password chittering issue.
I'm constantly turning VoiceOver off and on nearly every time an
authentication dialog is received, and only a few do not produce this
issue.
I can deal with it, but again, it's a bit distracting.
Any help pertaining to both these issues that I have brought up in
this email and VoiceOver is much appreciated.
Have a great rest of the day, folks.

RE: Bootcamp

2012-12-09 Thread Missy Hoppe
No, there is no audio feedback, butI have light perception, and I promise that
the fn key and f1 and f2 do the job. I think
you can also change it in control panel under display or power settings, just
like you would on a normal windows machine, but
the keys definitely work, and unlike in mac mode, your settings are retained; I
turn the screen on my macbook off most of the
time, and have to brighten it if a sighted friend or family member is using the
mac. Good luck, and I hope this helps.

key configurations on macbook air

I was wondering if I can reconfigure the on/off power key on the macbook air

I would like to have a regular shutdown when I press the power-button.
It seems I can't change that in the energy settings and I could find other
settings in the global preference pane I think.

Any hints are very welcomee,

Re: Special Characters Question: Math Symbols

2012-12-09 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I find it easier just to figure them out myself. They're fairly logical
actually and you can determine them in TextEdit or in any text area within any
app. The Option key is your modifier for this. In the text area, simply hold
down the Option key then press a key to determine it's special character.
Here's some common ones for you:

Option-Less than gives Less than or equal to
Option Greater than gives Greater than or equal to
Option v gives Square Root
Option Zero gives Degrees sign.
Option p gives pi (π)
Option equals gives Not equals
Option 4 gives the cent sign. 4 is used for the $ sign so your logical
determination is that the ¢ is also attached.

HTH.

Re: should I unauthorize my iTunes account

Hi,

No need to deauthorize your computer at all. The iTunes store does not care
what the name is or even what version of MacOS you're running. The Store uses
a unique hardware identifier like your MAC address so software changes are
immaterial.

Re: iTunes Library location?

2012-12-09 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Four drives not including the internal one on my iMac.

You should create the Library first then move the media into the new iTunes
Library location.

1. Hold down the Option key while starting iTunes. This will force iTunes to
bring up a Library chooser dialog.
2. Select "Create New Library" and tell iTunes to place the new Library on
your external HD. This will create an iTunes folder on the external with all
the necessary folder locations and database files.
3. Move your media into the iTunes Media folder that was created from step #2.
4. In iTunes, press cmd-comma to bring up the iTunes Preferences. In the
Advanced pane, make sure that both the Keep iTunes Media folder organized and
Copy items to the iTunes Media folder items are checked.
5. In iTunes, press cmd-o to Add files.
6. In the dialog, navigate to the iTunes Media folder within the iTunes folder
on the external HD then press return.

iTunes will get busy re-organizing all your media into appropriate folders and
will add all tags into it's Database. this could take a while since you have
such a large collection of media. Just be patient and let it do its thing.
You may need to fix a few things after iTunes has completed its task depending
on how well and accurate your media was tagged. Overall, it's not a difficult
thing, just may take some time.

Correct, that's exactly what the folder is used for. Just put your files
and folders in there, and iTunes will do the rest the next time it is
launched. It is a super, underrated feature.

Re: should I unauthorize my iTunes account

2012-12-09 Thread Daniel C
There's no need honestly to deauthorize just for a clean reinstall of an OS,
unless you are planning to change computers, like from Mac to Windows or
Windows to Mac, or maybe if you're changing computer names.
As long as the computer is the same computer you're reinstalling an OS to, or
if the computer name is the same, deauthorizing and reauthorizing won't make
much difference.

Special Characters Question: Math Symbols

2012-12-09 Thread Christine Grassman
I have tried everything which appears patently obvious to find a list of math
symbols: I have gone into Text Edit's edit menu, (every edit menu on the Mac I
could find, in fact) and tried to select "special characters" but nothing
happens. Interacting with any tool bars does not help.
I located information at discuss.apple.com which directed me to the systems
preferences, to language and text, to input source, to keyboard and character
viewer, which I checked. I am told to go to "show" in my menu bar, but such
does not appear to exist. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help.

Bootcamp

2012-12-09 Thread Chris H

Hello all
Well I managed to do it, get Windows 7 installed and working properly
via Bootcamp. My thoughts are very good so far! But lol! No where can I
adjust the brightness, even though I have the latest Bootcamp Support
software as of yesterday, the 8th of December! Lol!

So goodness knows how bright my screen is now.
Reason I'm saying this is the lower the brightness the longer the
battery life.
But yes, Bootcamp is very good and think I actually prefer it over
Fusion, just so I can avoid the key remapping issues.

The guide I posted worked a treat at my end, from start to finish.
Anyway, may e-mail you from my Bootcap partition at some point. Haven't
set up the internet yet as just seeing what I can and can't do.
Brightness appears to be the only issue so far, along with a limited set
of Power Management features.

Keep you posted.
Chris.

But what about Care Protection? Do you have a Care Protection contract? I'm
sure they could help you to solve this issue. Or you could write to the iTunes

Hello all. I am really steamed with iTunes, like never before. Before 11
came out, as I have done since the beginning of time with iTunes and the
iPhone (from my perspective, that is) I manually managed my material, and
checked and unchecked for syncing at will. It worked fine, once I got the
 hang of it.
Before 11 came out, I made some changes to my library, and synced. Nothing
changed. I tried again. Nothing. After iTunes 11, I tried again, but no
luck. I am at my wit's end. I have no idea how to remedy this. Not a
 single change is taking.
In addition, I downloaded two songs from the iTunes store to my phone
yesterday afternoon, and when I attempt to play them, the next song in the
alphabetical list of songs, or the next song by the same artist, depending
on whether I have songs or artists checked, plays. They are listed, but
they are not playing. I tried syncing -- same result.

RE: should I unauthorize my iTunes account

2012-12-09 Thread Daniel Miller
I would, since it will ask you to reauthorize your account, and if you do
that, you'll lose one out of your 5 authorizations. If you deauthorize,
you'll get that number back in case you ever need to authorize up to 5
computers in the future.

placed my NFB newsline information a couple of weeks ago, however yesterday
found it lurking around in my dropbox. If I didn't use dropbox, I think I would
use my iPhone a lot less.
The dropbox iOS app is very accessible, additionally I have this application
tied to several application. First of all, bossjock, so that way I can upload
my podcasts to dropbox. Secondly, I have another audio production program on my
iPhone connected to dropbox, which makes transferring audio very convenient.
And finally, I have a free basic text editor connected to dropbox as well. This
application is called plaintext free, and it is very user-friendly. It helps me
complete a lot of my term papers for the University of Phoenix.
To be honest, I think that dropbox is a lot more convenient than sunspace could
ever be. If you are in a file and you want the public link for that particular
file, you can double tap on the file, and then double tap on chair. One of the
options is copy link to clipboard, you can then paste it anywhere utilizing
your rotor on the iPhone.
Thank you
I hope this helps promote dropbox.
Michael

Thanks

Re: Blind Square again

2012-12-09 Thread Brian Miller
Does anyone know of a good Blind Square tutorial? I think there is a
lot of potential with this app, but I really feel at sea and can't get
the hang of it.

Thanks,

Accessible wifi scanner

2012-12-09 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Does anybody know if there's a wifi-enabled scanner somewhere that is
accessible for setting up the wifi connection or that can be controlled for
this by software on the computer? I imagine that if one has to have sighted
help to set up the wifi connection, it should be able to continue connecting
without assistance but I'd really like to be able to set this up and manage it
without sighted help.

Dropbox podcast

2012-12-09 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Has anybody done a pretty thorough podcast or tutorial on dropbox? I'm thinking
of paying for storage space there because of the variety of files I can store
and access vs iCloud. I'm already paying something for sendspace so I'm
thinking of dropping that and paying for dropbox. This is a beginning step
toward eventually possibly using my iaPad more as my primary computer instead
of my Macbook pro though actually doing that may be a ways down the road. One
of my primary challenges in even thinking about doing that is storage and
retrieval of media and documets.

Re: Blind Square again

2012-12-09 Thread Ilkka Pirttimaa
Yes, that's how to do it. In next version you can also search it in advance
and mark as favorite: Then you find it from your "My Places".

Searching by "multi-word-search-term" works okay but best match is not
always shown first since they are sorted by distance. This is fixed in
soon-to-be-released version. It shows first "best matches" sorted by
distance and after them other places that has near match.

Thanks for the clarification. I also was not sure what your problem was, just
like Chris.
Sounds really strange. Did you check wether your settings are still as you set
them?

Chris,

they removed the feature indeed. I found several forum posts to this topic,
sadly enough.

Oh yeah, I'm lucky enough to diciplin my self, most of the time. ;-)
