Creating M4B Audiobooks

2013-07-07 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi list,

Esther gave me a lot of info on this list a while back about sample rates, bit
rates and creating M4B audiobooks with apps like AudiobookBinder and
AudiobookBuilder. I've searched for this thread in Mail and on Google but can't
find it. So sorry for asking for old info.

What's the significance of the sample rate and bit rate when I'm creating M4B
audiobooks, particularly their effect on the maximum length of one file? And do
you have any tips for how I could know whether I'll be able to bind all files
into one audiobook or whether I'll need to create multiple audiobooks?

Cheers,
Nic

further to my original message, and in addition to Alex's list of commands

own shortcut for the Justify command.

 1. Open System Preferences.
 2. Navigate to the Keyboard pane.
 3. Select the Keyboard shortcut tab.
 4. Interact with the Shortcut Categories table and select Application
shortcuts at the end of the list.
 5. Stop Interacting with that Table and navigate over to the Application
 Shortcuts table
 6. If TextEdit is already in there then select it otherwise proceed to #7.
 7. Press on the Add an Application Shortcut button.
 8. Make sure that TextEdit is the chosen application from the pop-up.
 9. Enter Justify in the name field. Make sure it is spelled with a
Capital j and that it is spelled correctly.
 10. Give it a keyboard shortcut such as cmd-shift-j. Make sure it is not
something that is commonly used by the OS like cmd-j otherwise it may mess
 up the original command.

That should do it. Now, if you chose cmd-shift-j, you could have a section
of text highlighted in TextEdit, press cmd-shift-j and it would justify it.

 HTH.

 Hi,

 1. Bullets and numbering? Yes. There is a pop-up menu that is titled
List Style. It gives you choices of varying bullets and numbering.

 2. Justifying text. Doable yes, but no shortcut that I'm aware of. You
may be able to use the Keyboard pane in System Prefs to create your own but
I've not tried this yet so can't give any instructions.

 3. Google Spreadsheet. In Safari, on an existing spreadsheet, navigate to
the cell you wish to edit, route your mouse to the VO-cursor with VO-cmd-f5
(add FN if necessary), click your mouse or trackpad. This should activate
the cell, double-click to edit then the mode should change and you should
now be able to use arrow keys, the tab key and return key to enter what you
wish. Sometimes, it is difficult to land specifically in the cell you wish
so I usually use this method on an existing cell then tab or arrow to get to
the cell I wish. It's not pretty but it seems to work for me.

2 problems pertaining to the downloads folder and Safari

2013-07-07 Thread Rahul Bajaj
Hi all,

I'm facing 2 problems.
1. In the downloads folder, when I press VO-right arrow, it often
shows the list of previous downloads which is titled earlier.
How can I get to the files which have been downloaded most recently?
2. My firm has an internal web solution in which I have to click on
the expand button in order to expand the comments so as to gather more
data.
Sometimes, it works perfectly with VO-space.
On other occasions, when I press VO-space I merely hear an annoying
beep and it simply doesn't work. It finally does work after making a
lot of attempts.
A lot of time gets wasted due to this. Why could this be happening?
Can anyone kindly help me with any of these two problems?

Best,
Rahul

Re: Help with Contacts

Hello Alex:

Thanks so much for your help! There are six contacts that show up on my phone
but,not on the Mac. Any suggestions or should I delete them from the phone and
create them on the Mac or should I leave them on the phone and still create
them on the Mac?

On the Mac, open System Preferences and go to the iCloud button. Find the

On the iPhone, do almost the same thing: open Settings, double tap iCloud,

Once you do this on both devices, contacts will sync automatically. You can
set anything else you want while you are at it - calendars, Notes, Reminders,

Re: How can I read a table in a .doc file?

2013-07-07 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Shaf,

In Pages, the table will just show up as a highlighted space. If you can locate
it, you can either go to the Format menu and down to the Table submenu where
you select Convert table to text, or you can select the table, open the
Inspector (Cmd-Option-i, select the Wrap inspector and set the object placement
to Floating. Your table will then appear as a separate object on the page, and
you'll be able to read and edit it.

In Pages, you should never use Quick Nav, just use the arrow keys without the
VO keys if you want to be able to select objects such as tables.

Cheers,

Anne

accessing dropbox folder from within VMWare

2013-07-07 Thread Phil Halton
I want complete access to my dropbox folder from within my Fusion win7 machine,
but I don't necessarily want to install dropbox within the VM itself - that
would mean having two dropbox installations on my MAC HD. I'm thinking that I
could setup the MAC's dropbox folder as a shared folder and thus have it
available from within windows?

Is mirroring also a valid option for this purpose? Is there any way more or
less preferable for sharing folders? Mirroring looks like it might be a bit
more risky, but am not sure.

thanks

Re: Any Good Replacement for Newsrack?

2013-07-07 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey Nicholas,

A few questions for ya. I was using Newsrack on the mac, and liked that you
could just arrow up or down through the message title and once you moved over
it, that marked it as read. With Read Kit does it do that? I guess I am looking
for an RSS reader that quickly marks articles as read as I get thousands of
articles a week. Also, to use Read Kit on the mac with Feed Wrangler on the
iPhone, I assume you have to buy both? I saw that Feed Wrangler is $19 US for
the year, which isn't to bad, but I'm looking to keep costs down as much as
possible. I already paid for the now defunct Newsrack, which I loved for the
most part, but searching for articles in Newsrack wasn't accessible. I also
bought Lire and paid to upgrade on the iPhone, but now the sluggishness of Lire
and not synching to a desktop client is turning me off. I love getting things
in RSS and am not opposed to paying for it, but do want to keep my costs down,
as it seems like every week, I want some new tech app. Thanks for the info. I
guess let us know what you paid for, I did download Feed Wrangler on the
iPhone, but saw you need a membership, and for some reason thought it cost. I
guess Feed Kit doesn't sync itself but does have the ability to sync through
Feed Wrangler? Am I understanding that correctly? Thanks again.

wrote:

 Hi,
ReadKit on the Mac is completely accessible, supports syncing with Feed
Wrangler, FeedBin, and about half a dozen other services. It is very similar
to NewsRack, even costs about the same. Only criticism I have is that it
doesn't support feed management with Feed Wrangler from within the app
itself. However, I'm hopeful this will change in future updates.
One fantastic feature of ReadKit is that it allows you to view articles in
Readability mode by simply pressing the letter G. This presents you with the
full text of the article minus all the annoying junk such as links to share
etcetera. Readability mode is thus a lot like Lire on the iPhone.
There are a number of RSS readers for iOS that can sync with ReadKit using
some of the services I mentioned earlier such as Feed Wrangler, FeedBin,
Feva, etcetera. Personally I'm using Feed Wrangler on the iPhone, which is
accessible and free. I've heard Mr Reader for iPad is also highly accessible
 and easy to use.

Pinboard or Instapaper

2013-07-07 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

I am noticing now that a lot of the new RSS readers work with services like
Pinboard and have long work with programs like Instapaper. What are people
using and what do you find most accessible? For some reason I think I looked at
Instapaper a long time ago and it wasn't accessible. Would love to hear any
thoughts. I know Lire also works with a lot of these services, but I have just
been using Lire's internal bookmark service. Would love to start using one that
I can access anywhere. Thanks

My comparison of the scene live GPS and BlindSquare

2013-07-07 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys
I realize IM you to both programs mentioned in the subject line. However, I am
not new to GPS applications. Here is what I have found so far as far as I am
concerned right now.

I hate to say this, but right now I like BlindSquare better than I like the
Seeing Eye GPS program, this graduate is sorry to say.

First of all, BlindSquare is more accurate insofar as my address is concerned.
The scene I GPS keeps insisting I am at 1061, where as BlindSquare told me I
had reached my house when I was right in front of my door. Also, I tried using
the scene I GPS this morning for a route that I knew. I did it on purpose for
one but I knew. I tried using the multi thing for planning the route, and I got
an error every time I tried it. So, I had to use pedestrian mode. I got on the
bus, and I was not given enough cross streets. I have found BlindSquare works
better on the bus.

However, I did discover one weird thing about replanning when using BlindSquare
and navigate. Several times I've used vehicle mode in Gavagan, and it works
fine. However, today when I chose public transportation mode or pedestrian
mode, Nevaden said not one solitary word until I got to my destination, at
which point it told me I got there. I kept BlindSquare tracking, and I was able
to find my bus stop.

Just a few of my observations. Oh another thing. As far as I can see right now,
BlindSquare seems to be better at points of interest location.
Regards,
Gigi

Re: My comparison of the scene live GPS and BlindSquare

2013-07-07 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey Gigi, Just wanted to say thanks so much for the comparison. I have used
Blind Square for awhile, and it is pretty good. It is not perfect, as I do
notice the feet and time position of a location are off a bit, but I think this
is due to GPS not being a perfect accuracy down to the smallest distance.
Additionally, the developer of Blind Square is amazing, as he is constantly
working on improving the app and tweaking it. He is very responsive, and I hope
he continues with tweaking it even with the competition of Sendero's costly
Seeing Eye. I know Sendero has a limited market for this app, and they are in
business to make money, but if they want to be successful they are going to
have to become more responsive about their product. Thanks again for your
review of both apps, really insightful.

Re: My comparison of the scene live GPS and BlindSquare

2013-07-07 Thread Christine Grassman
I only acquired Blind Square recently, and haven't really given it a go yet. I
can tell you that I am disappointed thus far with Seeing Eye GPS.
1. It tells me I am home when I am at my neighbor's house, and that my home is
behind me when I do arrive home.
2. It announces intersections far too early.
3. It does not say turn right or turn left when one is actually at the
corner where one wishes to turn -- whereas Navigon is excellent at this.
4. It names POI's I am near but does not indicate left or right -- I do
not know if using the location wand will help with this. I have not tried that
yet.
5. It has been wrong about what side of the street a destination is on more
than once.

With respect to Seeing Eye GPS, it is interesting to hear what POI's are
around, and its directions are good and easy to understand if you already have
a grasp of the area you are in. It has tremendous potential. If I had to do
it all over again, however, I would save my money and wait for a later version.

First of all, BlindSquare is more accurate insofar as my address is

BlindSquare told me I had reached my house when I was right in front of my

to use pedestrian mode. I got on the bus, and I was not given enough cross
streets. I have found BlindSquare works better on the bus.

However, I did discover one weird thing about replanning when using
BlindSquare and navigate. Several times I've used vehicle mode in Gavagan,
and it works fine. However, today when I chose public transportation mode
or pedestrian mode, Nevaden said not one solitary word until I got to my
destination, at which point it told me I got there. I kept BlindSquare

Just a few of my observations. Oh another thing. As far as I can see right

A lot of time gets wasted due to this. Why could this be happening?
Can anyone kindly help me with any of these two problems?

Mac OSX, Voiceover and BBC iPlayer

2013-07-07 Thread Edward Green
Hi,

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to watch or listen to programmes on the BBC
iPlayer website using Mac OSX Mountain Lion and Safari?

I can search for episodes, click on the page for the relevant show but can't
then find any controls to play the programme etc.

I installed the latest version of Adobe Flash Player but to no avail.

Grateful for any advice.

Many thanks,

Ed

Re: My comparison of the scene live GPS and BlindSquare

2013-07-07 Thread Brian Fischler
Thanks for the feedback. Would be interesting to hear if anyone has a Sendero
GPS product that is just a GPS navigator and not on the iPhone, as would love
to hear if there products are any good. I can tell you that the Sendero Look
Around app is not very good. This is the app that has been out for awhile.
Considering I am in the middle of NYC, it is ridiculous how long this app takes
to get a signal to tell you what corner you are at, and if I recall it doesn't
tell you what direction the intersection is at, I haven't used their app in so
long, as it is so much easier to try and ask someone, or use Blind Square to
quickly pull up your location. Hopefully Sendero will continue to make
improvements, but I haven't heard much positive about the Seeing Eye app.

Sure! The 60 gb is actually the maximum size for your virtual disk. By
default Vmware creates a dynamically expanding hard disk, which starts
out small and grows when data is added to it.

 2. It announces intersections far too early.
 3. It does not say turn right or turn left when one is actually at the

 4. It names POI's I am near but does not indicate left or right -- I

 5. It has been wrong about what side of the street a destination is on more

With respect to Seeing Eye GPS, it is interesting to hear what POI's are

this is due to GPS not being a perfect accuracy down to the smallest

First of all, BlindSquare is more accurate insofar as my address is
concerned. The scene I GPS keeps insisting I am at 1061, where as
BlindSquare told me I had reached my house when I was right in front of my
door. Also, I tried using the scene I GPS this morning for a route that I
knew. I did it on purpose for one but I knew. I tried using the multi
thing for planning the route, and I got an error every time I tried it.
So, I had to use pedestrian mode. I got on the bus, and I was not given
enough cross streets.

I kept BlindSquare
tracking, and I was able to find my bus stop.

Just a few of my observations. Oh another thing. As far as I can see right
now, BlindSquare seems to be better at points of interest location.

Strange that good old Mikey May is still trying to squeeze every single penny
possible out of the blindness community--well, not strange at all, but very
sad. Especially if the app is inferior to blind square. I'll take $15 for
life any day. $70 a year is more than Garmin and all of the other major GPS
providers charge--as a Seeing Eye graduate I am let down by their business
decision.

which braille display?

2013-07-07 Thread Cait and Maggie
Hi,
I'm in the market for a braille display to use with an i mac and possibly a mac
laptop and maybe down the line an i pad.
I can't see myself wanting any less then 32 cells.
anyone got any suggestions of good ones?
I've been using my Braille sense Plus, but it's dying a slow painful death, so
that's why I'm starting to research something new now.
the only other one I've had experience with was the focus 40 but that was
problematic with the mac in that I didn't get full functionalityy for obvious
reasons.
thanks so much for any insights and or suggestions!

Voyager 70 display

Hi everyone,
Wondering if anyone has any experience with the Voyager 70 display. I know the
44 model is a supported display, but somehow the 70 is not. When I connected
the USB cable to my Mac, VoiceOver does not recognize it.
I'd appreciate it if anyone might have any suggestions to get this Voyager 70
to work with VoiceOver. I have a feeling I'm out of luck, but thought I ask.
Thanks.

OFF Topic: Accessible places and apps for visiting London

2013-07-07 Thread Daniela Rubio
Hello all:
First, I am sorry if this off topic is inconvenient to any one, but I feel that
here there might be some one who can help me with this kerry.
My husband and I, both blind and with dog guides, are visiting London from
August 9 to August 13 this year We go alone, so we are trying to plan as much
as we can, finding accessible visits which can give us a good experience about
the city ,some museums, or other interesting places, as well as accessible apps
for iOS that could help us plan our trips by public transport or find places
around which can provide accessible services.
I have Inclusive London, but I was looking at the Royal Institute for the blind
page, and I found out that there are apps for bus traveling and subway as well,
and I can't find which to download.
Any other ideas are welcome. We really want to make this a nice experience
because we are celebrating our wedding anniversary! we love nature, art,
music, history and interactive activities (lol)
Thank you for any ideas and help, and if somebody would like to give a hand,
please write privately to this e-mail or preferably to:

Re: My comparison of the scene live GPS and BlindSquare

2013-07-07 Thread Alex Hall
I just wanted to respond to a few points. I am not associated with
Seeing Eye or Sendero in any way, but I feel there may be inaccuracies
spread if I don't speak up.

1. POIs that are nearby are not spoken with a distance and direction.
Lookaround Wand is used to get that detail; I suppose the theory is
that you have so much going on, especially in a route, that distance
and direction to a POI you may not care about are extras you don't
need to worry about.

2. The app does announce cross streets and turns very early, and I
made a big deal about that to Sendero when I was beta testing it. They
know about it, and are doing their best to tweak the system to make it
better.

3. The subscription model is the fault of the map company from which
Sendero licenses content. in fact, Sendero says that it is possible
other GPS apps will adopt this system in the future. Thhe actual price
point is set by Sendero, but the fact that no lifetime purchase is
available is out of their control.

4. Address accuracy is notoriously bad when dealing with commercial
map providers. It is likely that Sendero uses a different company than
apps like Blindsquare, hence the differences. I don't know why they
went with the provider they did, but there you have it.

5. The app will not announce cross streets above fifteen miles per
hour, which is why those of you having trouble with it on the bus are
noticing this. It is something they are looking to fix.

For the problems with announce times and no cross streets over fifteen
miles per hour, the problem is the query time. To keep data and
battery consumption down, the app queries the map server every fifteen
seconds. In places where you have a lot of cross streets close
together, that query interval means you might miss your turn if the
app speaks it too late, which would happen if, say, you just missed
the alert threshhold, then walked quickly for the fifteen seconds
until the next query, at which point you missed your turn. It is a
balancing act, and Sendero is trying to figure out a better way to
manage it. I asked them why they can't just cache nearby map data, but
part of their licensing with their map provider is that no data can be
stored locally, so that option is out.

As I said, I'm not affiliated with Sendero or the Seeing Eye, but I
wanted to offer clarifications and explanations. Also, remember that
Blindsquare has been out for some time, and the Sendero app is new.
Was Blindsquare perfect from day one? of course not, no app is.

home is behind me when I do arrive home.
 2. It announces intersections far too early.
 3. It does not say turn right or turn left when one is actually at
the corner where one wishes to turn -- whereas Navigon is excellent at
 this.
 4. It names POI's I am near but does not indicate left or right --
I do not know if using the location wand will help with this. I have

2013-07-07 Thread Chris Blouch
I'm sure different folks will pick off different parts of your question
list to answer. As far as command-q, all apps should respond to this but
some might pop up a dialog asking you something about losing work or
saving documents before they quit. Safari in particular should just
close with a command-q but maybe there is some scenario where you've
filled out a form but not submitted it or maybe a download is in progress.

Installing a program happens a couple ways. One of the most common is
that you'll download a file which ends in .dmg which is a Disk Image. In
the Finder you'll locate the .dmg file which for Safari defaults to
going to your Downloads folder, which you can open with
command-option-L. Once you find it you open it with command-o which
creates a virtual disk drive on your desktop containing the app and
sometimes some readme files or the like. So you'll go to that virtual
disk drive if it's not already opened, find the app, hit copy
(command-c) move to your applications folder (command-shift-A) and hit
paste to copy the app from the virtual drive to the applications folder.
There are similar steps for files that download as zips or pkg files.
Some also have an installer app instead of being able to just
copy/paste. Those are usually more complicated installers like major apps.

Hope this helps.

lifetime purchase option and such poor results, sender should have chosen a
different company to go with for its mapping. I have spoken to sighted people
who use GPS apps all the time, of course these aren't accessible to the blind,
and they thought this app and the price was crazy. I did explain well, Sendero
has a limited market place, and afar all they are in business to make money,
but seriously I have yet to hear one good thing about the app and the price is
ridiculous. It sounds like this app wasn't ready to be released to the public,
and now Sendero will have to deal with th ebad PR. I hope the app will get much
better, but for now I will stick will blind square until I hear about vast
improvements.

Finder View Problem Driving Me Nuts

2013-07-07 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

In my downloads folder I have it set to list view and by name. For some reason
this is the only folder when I open it the list comes up in reverse
alphabetical order, meaning the files go from Z to A. I can't seem for the life
of me to reverse it. I have looked in view and options tried switching to icon
view and back to list, tried hitting command control 1 twice thinking it would
flip the order, but nothing seems to work. Anyone have any clue how to get it
to show from A to Z. It's the only folder that comes up like this, and it is
driving me nuts. Thanks

 3. It does not say turn right or turn left when one is actually at
the corner where one wishes to turn -- whereas Navigon is excellent at
 this.
 4. It names POI's I am near but does not indicate left or right --
I do not know if using the location wand will help with this. I have
 not tried that yet.
 5. It has been wrong about what side of the street a destination is on
 more than once.

With respect to Seeing Eye GPS, it is interesting to hear what POI's are
around, and its directions are good and easy to understand if you
already have a grasp of the area you are in. It has tremendous
potential. If I had to do it all over again, however, I would save my
money and wait for a later version.
