Hi, Nic, Thanks for the clarification. I knew I had a sort of basic understanding of it, and wasn’t surprised to have been a little vague on the specifics. Anyhow, I was lucky that I already had ‘all mail” enabled. I don’t know what happens when “all mail” visibility is disabled, but from all accounts, it doesn’t sound good. So after the initial ferreting out of duplicate messages, etc. Mail has settled down again. Gmail is indeed workable, but clunky. Hopefully, this issue will be dealt with soonest. Logos progrm on Mac or iPad
Hi, all! Does anyone know if the logos bible program is accessible with VoiceOver either on the Mac or the iPad? I could use this program, or at least something like it for Bible-studies and such things, cause I'm going to a Bible college. I have three bible programs on my computer, and none of them work; the accordance program is completely inaccessible; you can do everything with it except get VoiceOver to read the Bible (Sheesh, what else is a Bible program for if you can't actually read the Bible on the darned thing), and my River Bible program doesn't work at all, and neither does MacSword, at least not with Mavericks. (It just barely worked the last time, never mind now; it won't even launch, and with the river Bible, it just keeps crashing and saying that there's a problem report). I really need something that'll work soon, so if someone can tell me what to do, that'l be awesome. I'm leaving for a Mission Exposure trip in January, and if my computer won't work, I pretty much won't be able to take my Bible with me, except the ones on my iPhone, but the iPhone ones go crazy after awhile when I have no service; either that or they work so slowly it takes forever to find one passage. Does anyone have an iPad they'd like to get rid of? I'd want it to be in decent shape obviously, but I'd be willing to pay a decent price for it, and if all the cases and what-not could come with it too, that'd be all the more awesome, and my professor promised to bring his iPad to school and he has logos on it, so hopefully we'll be able to find out if it works with VoiceOver, which I don't think it did on my phone. Sorry, but I'm kind of desperate, cause my braille Bible's huge, and you'd pretty much need a van or a decent sized car to carry it alone, never mind me and my other stuff and the rest of our group, so I can't take it along on the mission exposure trip. There does seem to be some confusion here. I used my Mac to do the little demonstration I did yesterday morning. You seem to be using your Iphone. I suspect that, for clarification, we might want to get that point across because some might think some of us are using Macs some our Iphones. attachments in mail now more logical
For the person the other day who was having issues receiving attachments in mail, the answer is to look in the file menu now. No longer are attachments seen in the body of messages as before: rather, they are now gotten to via the file menu. This pertains to not only saving attachments, it applies to quick look for mail attachments also. Now, it seems, you can’t pick and choose which attachments to save. They just all get dumped in to the download folder. When you click on the “save attachments…” in the file menu, the standard save dialog window pops up. You don’t know this however, because Voice Over doesn’t focus on it. You have to manually look for and choose the window via VO+F2 twice. Mail in Mavericks
Hi All, Two quick questions; Has anyone noticed that the sound played when you press “send” is no longer as audible as it used to be, I’ve looked in Sound Settings within System Preferences and sound effects are set to 100%, yet the audible volume of the aeroplane taking off is notably quieter, if not all most impossible to hear. Also, how do I now get to attachments, either for quick view or to save them? They used to be in the Tool Bar, however, appear to have moved? Many thanks. Hi Matt. I can confirm what Alex is saying. The Apex works fine with Bluetooth and USB. The Focus displays seem to be having Bluetooth issues though. At least, from my testing yesterday. Everything functions fine on USB from what I can tell, it's the Bluetooth connections that seem to be having issues. Hmm. My Braille Edge is functioning fine with Bluetooth and Mavericks. I didn't get to test the Braille Sense products yet. The Mac I tried this on had never been paired with the Edge before, so I'm not sure if the problem is speratic or what. Don’t panic. Your sounds are being effected by audio ducking. What this means is that when voice over speaks, the regular Mac sounds get ducked under. This is the same as with the Iphone. Should you wish to turn this off, you need only go to the Voice Over utilities under the soudns tab. There, you can uncheck audio ducking. As for attachments, You will now need to consult the file menu. This is the case for any attachment activity you wish to perform. I also told Mail to never remove messages from the server, since this is not my primary machine, the Macbook Pro I mean. Just thought I would share my observations so far. Nope, didn’t help. the thing is I think it’s from the mail app itself, not a notification thing. I had do not disturb on last night, and it still does it. It’s just the mail app adding rows of email, and when it does it announces ‘eight rows added, or whatever, but that interupts my email reading now when it didn’t before. thanks for all the suggestions. I'm still using ML, so the behaviour happens in the way you explain. It takes me back !the first message when new mail comes in. This is in conversation view. That’s right. that’s why I stopped using conversation view. I had forgotten that, now it’s doing it in every view. the only work around I can think of is to disable automatically receiving mail which I can do, but would rather not. I have Siri set to US English, because I prefer the male voice, but the default language set to Australian for VoiceOver, but not sure about the global language for the iPhone; I have regional set to Australian, I think. Hey Scott. Whatever you do, if it's working fine, don't take it off or you may not get it back until somebody figures out and fixes what's wrong. It never occurred to me that my computer wouldn't even let me do USB yesterday and wouldn't even show me a list of braille displays on the table in VoiceOver Utility. I don’t have Audio Hijack, as it costs a good amount of money. Using aggregate audio devices and Sound Flower should be enough, but aggregates have never worked for me. Is there a trick, such as a setting or something, that I’m missing? This is not true, at least for me it’s not. I was still able to press command shift A and the attachment menu showed up. I was able to go to my documents folder, select a file, and then send it. saving mail attachments in OS10.9
Hi all, I read on this list that people are having problems saving attachments. What exactly is the problem so I can try to reproduce it? I am able to save just fine, with file save attachments. Last I checked, these programs were not very accessible, but there is a work around. If you go to http://biblia.com you can log in with your email address and password and read your purchased books in your web browser. If you do this on a desktop computer, choose the option to switch to mobile view. This will disable the automatic scrolling which will make each section easier to read. Original message: Hi, all! I could use this program, or at least something like it for Bible-studies and such things, cause I'm going to a Bible college. I have three bible programs on my computer, and none of them work; the accordance program is completely inaccessible; you can do everything with it except get VoiceOver to read the Bible (Sheesh, what else is a Bible program for if you can't actually read the Bible on the darned thing), and my River Bible program doesn't work at all, and neither does MacSword, at least not with Mavericks. (It just barely worked the last time, never mind now; it won't even launch, and with the river Bible, it just keeps crashing and saying that there's a problem report). I really need something that'll work soon, so if someone can tell me what to do, that'l be awesome. I'm leaving for a Mission Exposure trip in January, and if my computer won't work, I pretty much won't be able to take my Bible with me, except the ones on my iPhone, but the iPhone ones go crazy after awhile when I have no service; either that or they work so slowly it takes forever to find one passage. Does anyone have an iPad they'd like to get rid of? I'd want it to be in decent shape obviously, but I'd be willing to pay a decent price for it, and if all the cases and what-not could come with it too, that'd be all the more awesome, and my professor promised to bring his iPad to school and he has logos on it, so hopefully we'll be able to find out if it works with VoiceOver, which I don't think it did on my phone. hide Mail's preview pane in 10.9?
Hi all, Someone on Twitter asked me how to hide the preview pane in Mail. Since mine was already hidden, I showed it again by double clicking the splitter right after the messages group. The pane appeared, but the splitter went away, so now I have nothing to click to hide the pane again. Is there a way to re-hide it? If so, how? Thanks for any help. Unified Braille.
Hello. I was writing in unified Braille using my braille display on my I phone and could not find how to use the at sign or underscore. Happily for me, as I work in the transcription department at the Royal National Institute of the Blind in the UK, I asked one of my colleagues to find it in her print book which I don't have yet electronically until I start producing this Braille next year as all transcription will be going UEB. No, you don’t. IF a message has an attaachment, a special sound will play. IN fact, that sort of leads me to the observation that there are more sounds for different things in 10.9 than there used to be: however, the sounds are a little lower in volume than they used to be even without ducking checked. I needed a reminder on how to show the preview pain as I thought one could jump to it with Vo J. But alas on my Macbook Pro at least I could only jump from the messages table to the mailboxes table and vice versa. I just couldn't remember what to double click on. Offline dictation available in Mavericks
Hi all, I’ve just stumbled across the ability to be able to dictate offline using Mavericks, as long as you’re prepared to spare 500MB of disc space. Under Mountain Lion as with iOS, you needed an Internet connection and it was done over Apple’s servers. Apologies if this has already been posted to the list, but I haven’t seen it and thought it may be of interest. Hey all. I’m having a little bit of a problem here. I want to create a bootable installer for Mavericks now that I’ve updated it, but the problem is that the darn thing won’t download. No matter how many times I click on the download button in the purchases section, it won’t download it. It just asks if I want to continue with the download and does nothing after that. Meaning when I go to the status to check on the download, Voiceover says it’s blank rather than telling me if it’s downloading or not. Anybody have any suggestions? Hello Chris, I don’t know about modern view in Mail, but in classic view, turn Quick Nav off, navigate to the Messages table but don’t interact, then press VO-Down Arrow and you should be on the horizontal splitter that you need to double click on. Yes, I’m running Mavericks which is why I can no longer interact with headers, navigate right and find the Save popup menu. I’m using classic view with the preview pane turned off. This pertains to not only saving attachments, it applies to quick look for mail attachments also. Now, it seems, you can’t pick and choose which attachments to save. They just all get dumped in to the download folder. When you click on the “save attachments…” in the file menu, the standard save dialog window pops up. You don’t know this however, because Voice Over doesn’t focus on it. You have to manually look for and choose the window via VO+F2 twice. When I used Pandora, the only way I found to delete seeds or thumbs is to put vo on the heading, route the mouse to it, then move the mouse over to the right until clicking would remove what I was wanting. Hi Juergen, Yep sure. It’s on the Dictation tab of Speech and Dictation in System Preferences. You need to click on the Enhanced Dictation check box and you should be good to go. Discmaker X for creating OS X bootable drives.
Hello, Has anyone used the new version of Discmaker X, formerly Lion Disc Maker to make a bootable install drive of 10.9? I’m having extreme difficulties, which is a shame because the previous versions of this app worked wonderfully with VoiceOver. Any help would be appreciated. In short, copy the *exact* text of the menu item to which you want the shortcut to be tied (use VO’s copy last phrase feature). Open System Preferences, go to Keyboard, then the Shortcuts tab, select “applications” in the table, and then add a new shortcut. Select Mail from the apps popup button, paste your text and type your desired shortcut in the proper fields, and there you go. This works for any menu item in any application. major bug with respect to blue tooth keyboard pairing and Voice Over
There is a major break in the accessibility of pairing blue tooth keyboards and voice over with 10.9. When the “pair” button is pressed, and the pairing dialog pops up and asks for the special password to be entered on the keyboard, Voice Over does not read out the actual password asked for by the dialog. Instead, Voice Over seems to display the numbers 12345678 no matter what the actual password is. The screen does show the asked for password, but, Voice Over always reads out 12345678 and thus the pairing can never be completed. I know the screen shows the correct password because I had to get a sighted neighbor to read it out to me. This is not in accord with Apple’s usually high standard of accessibility. PLEASE, correct this as soon as possible! For instance, If I wanted to use the command key, would I actually press the physical command key, or would I type “command” or “CMD”? And, capitalize or not? If you're meaning Lion Diskmaker, beta 3 is out, which let me go through the process, until it wished to erase my disk. Then it said the operation couldn't be completed. I tried several times. So, I tried beta 2 as that was what the read me that came with the program indicated with a link, and that seems to have completed the install disk. As a disclaimer: I have not clean installed yet. This list has been a very good resource for the pitfalls and victories Mavericks has been in the first few days since release. Command-Shift-arrows not Working For Me in iBooks
Hi, all, The shortcut key to switch chapters in iBooks doesn’t seem to be working for me at all. It just highlights a line of text, which is its usual function in text areas. Has anyone else experienced this? Hi, I’ve noticed that I have to move keyboard focus away from the scroll area before it works. Also, If the book chapters have several sections, I think it might be treating those as chapters, but I’m not sure. I’ve found the keyboard focus following vo to be a problem in iBooks, so I have an activity set where it is turned off. Hope that helps. Downcast Synching
Hey guys, Hopefully this will get read in between all the Mavericks emails. I am trying to sync downcast on multiple devices. I just got a 64gig iPhone and have been changing my podcasts to download only problem is when I do so they change to download on my old iPhone 4S where I want them to still stream only. Is there a way to do this? Not sure what I am doing wrong as I have settings turned off under iCloud sync I would like my podcasts episodes and playlists to all sync, but not the settings for individual podcasts should I be turning off podcast synching also? Since they are brf files, if you want to read them in your Mac, first load into TextEdit. You have to have a braille display. Then, and you may want to make a copy before you do this, select all the text and do a transformation by going to EDIT, and going down arrow until you find TRANSFORMATION. Choose to make all the text to be lower case. That will take out all the dots 7 and 8. Then if you have a braille display, you should be able to read the file in TextEdit. I forgot to warn you, however, that this file is written in American grade 2 braille. I don't know if that's a problem for you or not.
