 Hi,

The LCD panel is actually now called the LCD Section. When in iTunes, I just
press VO-FN-shift-left arrow to move to the first item on the page. You
could probably just press VO-FN-left arrow since iTunes is really only one
page but I get used to pressing the other key combination, so that's what I
normally use. That first item should be your LCD panel. This section relays
the user info about the current media playing or other status sorts of
things. Once you're on the LCD panel, Just Interact with it to determine the
 bits of info available.

 Hi,

Press cmd-option-4 to open your Downloads window while in iTunes. You can
then Interact with the Downloads table within this window to check the
progress of each item being downloaded. If you are only downloading one
item though, there is no real need to open the Download window, simply go
to the LCD panel, and it can be accessed in there. If it is displaying the
current song or something like that, just press the Show Next View button
in the LCD panel and you should get the Download progress.

iCloudless skies, the world is a cyber desert.

2014-03-19 Thread Rigor Mortis

There are over 7 billion people upon earth.
Just over 2,4 billion have internet.
Of that 2,4 billion, about a third have broadband access.
Way less than a billion have reliable, uninterrupted services at affordable
prices.
Cloud-based computing in general is therefore not widespread.

Apple has a small global footprint yet a fair share of its user base are
located in regions without practical broadband connectiviity. We bought Apple
for its local sync, especially via tethering.

In global terms, iCloud users are by far a minority. If you live away from the
USA, you soon realise how fragile and compromised the Intetnet is. Natural
disasters, power outages, accidents and even terrorism/sabotage can and do
interrupt connectivity. This post will travel 23,140km via a detoured undersea
cable so that it can be saved on Apple's servers. It goes from the tip of
Africa along the west coast up to the UK and from there across the Atlantic to
the USA. The cables get severed and on our harbour there are two ships that
have the immense task of maintaining these cables.

My USB cable is two feet long and works better and is not exposed to risk.

Re: Question about a MacBook Pro

2014-03-19 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
Yeah, I agree with Pam here. That way, if you need it, you could call that
accessibility number if you need it. Even though I am a pretty good computer
user, I have had to call that number more than once, if no other reason than to
save a lot of time. If you're one of these do-it-yourself for everything sort
of people, then maybe it won't matter. But if you're like me, and you're one of
these let's get it figured out ASAP so I don't have to deal with it any more,
then having Apple Care is what you want with your new computer. You can call
Apple Care even if you don't have a new computer; I understand they charge $20
for a call if you're not eligible for Apple Care because you paid for it for an
additional two years or you got it for a year with a new computer purchase.

Gigi

Re: an annoying little problem

I tried the Soundflower route once. I suspect the problem is Skype not handling
the input. When I record Soundflower and my microphone, I need to set Audacity
to record three channels, two for the stereo input of Soundflower and one for
my mono mic. In Skype, though, you cannot set the channel count, and I am
pretty sure that is the problem. An external mixer is your best bet, possibly
with the Linein app to live monitor your input.

Otherwise, there's the chance that Skype could ffeedback on itself.

Google is how I learned literally everything I know about Applescript.

For Xcode, go to www.applevis.com and search for Xcode, or go to the guides
section and search in there for either Xcode or programming (Mac). I've
written a few guides on Xcode with Voiceover you might find helpful.

Re: Hotkeys for spell checking.

2014-03-19 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi Kayaker.

Thank you. I do nearly the same when using cmd +shift +,, but what I really
like about using this command, is that I can see the context with my braille
display, so if there had been a hotkey for learn, I would have been happy.
Nisus writer has a hotkey for that, but not text edit and other programs.

Best regards Annie.
Den 18/03/2014 kl. 19.11 skrev Kayaker sea...@me.com:

 Hi,

When I spell check in an app like Text Edit, my process is to use the inline
rather than the dialog box. Consider using the Command semicolon to jump to
the first instance of a misspelled word. At that point, I will often use the
speak selected text to confirm the word (that's just option escape by default
if it is turned on in the dictation and speech preference pane). Then, I use
the vo shift M to bring up the contextual menu that includes the options you
want, along with the suggested corrections. I find this very fast and
 efficient.

In fact, I'm about to use it to check this message before I hit send.

Enable mac OS host keyboard shortcuts is checked

Muse shortcuts is set to defaults
Grab mouse and keyboard, have tried this both ways
Toggle full screen is unchecked
Toggle unity is unchecked
Single window is unchecked
Cycle through windows is checked

Hello Bill,

I recommend you turn quick nav off (right and left arrows
simultaneously) which should negate the need for turnign VO off
entirely in the windows VM. I too had problems with grabbing the VM
keyboard in the outset but partly it was my lack of knowledge of the
quirks of running a VM and partly it was settings, i.e. turning off
fullscreen mode so that it was easier for me to locate the VM in
VMWare by pressing tab to the startup button.

Best of luck,

Jordie

question about access note

2014-03-19 Thread Jean Parker
Hello All:
Does anyone have experience using Access Note by the American Foundation for
the Blind? I have some questions and would like to correspond with an advanced
user of the app. Among other things, I am trying to figure out how to manage
brf files on the app.
Anyone who can help please write to me off list.

Re: question about access note

2014-03-19 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Jean
I see no reason to go off list. We talk iPhone all the tiome.

First, I have found out that brf files using AccessNote need to have their file
names in all lower case letters. Otherwise, the program refuses to get them
from Drop Box. I wrote AFB support about that, and they referred the question
to their programmer, and that was what was found out.

The next thing is that, unless you are ok with reading in all caps and having
dots 7 and 8 shown all the time, you will wnat to use TextEdit to make a
transformation to all lower case. If you don't know how, you select all the
text in TextEdit, go to Edit, down arrow to transformations, and right arrow.
Find make upper case and pres Enter. You'll want to press down arrow to
unselect your text you just made into lower case. This will not hurt the
reading of your braille because brf files could care less if the text is upper
or lower. But it stop dots 7 and 8 from driving you crazy, at least I don't
like it. I read it if I have to but it's not my favorite.

Regards,
Gigi

Yeah, I agree with Pam here. That way, if you need it, you could call that
accessibility number if you need it. Even though I am a pretty good computer

to save a lot of time. If you're one of these do-it-yourself for everything
sort of people, then maybe it won't matter. But if you're like me, and you're
one of these let's get it figured out ASAP so I don't have to deal with it
any more, then having Apple Care is what you want with your new computer. You
can call Apple Care even if you don't have a new computer; I understand they
charge $20 for a call if you're not eligible for Apple Care because you paid
for it for an additional two years or you got it for a year with a new
 computer purchase.

Voiceover And MathML

2014-03-19 Thread Barry Hadder
Hello everyone.

For any who may be interested, I was curious as to how well vo would respond to
MathML and I found a page with some sample equations at
http://www.mathjax.org/demos/mathml-samples/. The page initially shows them in
html/css, but I chose MathML from the popup and got an alert saying that my
browser doesn't support all features natively or something to that affect.
However, it seems to work quite well to me in spite of the limitations. Maybe
