A appreciate the help. Between one thing and another, I never had time to try
this, knowing what could go wrong and how long it would take to recover from
any mistake. Now I find myself low on disk space, so I don't think I can
install Yosemite on this machine. Can anyone tell me how, or even if,I can

I love the around me app and the fact that it lets you navigate the route using
whatever gps apps are on your phone, but I don't understand why whatever gps
app I'm using (scout maps being one of them,) won't let me save a route I've
created, which is one I'll be using on a regular basis. Is that just an issue
with my gps app, or is that an issue with the around me app"

Go to mail preferences with command Comma.
You will be automatically interacted with the toolbar.
We want to go to the "Signitures" tab. VO space on this.
Next you will be placed in a table. You can hit the "add" button to add a

Time Machine runs verifications every so often, to make sure your backups are

second backup, if you want that extra peace of mind--perhaps a remote backup
using something like Arq of all your critical stuff.

Re: question about Clamxav

2014-08-18 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
I wouldn't think ClamAV could scan your email in any useful way anyway. It's
stored by your ISP, so they should be the one scanning for you. Should they
not be doing this, but you are using POP3, then you could try scanning your
Library folder, which would contain your email data, although I'd caution
against doing this while Mail was running. It all seems very fragile to me.

question about Clamxav

2014-08-18 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys
I know that I need to point Clamxav at my email to make it scan it. However, I
can't figure out whether it is scanning the email. I just ran a scan and it
said it did not find any viruses. I would not be concerned, except a good
friend's Windows computer just caught one, and I recently got an email from
her, wherein I selected some text from an email she sent me. Somehow she
couldn't do attachments which is weird because you would think a virus would be
making them like crazy. So, how can I tell if my email got scanned? I looked in
the table, and it shows all my files like Documents and my user folder (there's
only one user, me, on this Mac.)

Thanks guys.

Regards,
Gigi

Re: how to create a Mavericks installer USB drive using a mountain lion machine?

2014-08-18 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Yep, the reason for that you can't use Disk Utility to repartition is that it
doesn't yet support manipulating CoreStorage groups, which is what
FileVault-encrypted volumes and Fusion Drives are made from. So if you have
one of these, you have to drop to the command line to delete the CoreStorage
group before you can go back to partitioning with Disk Utility. In your case
though, erasing the volume was perfectly sufficient to get you reinstalled, so
you should be fine.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

Re: macs and braille displays

2014-08-18 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Hmmm. I don't fail to acknowledge, I just don't think it's a very good excuse.
:)

I do understand what you're saying, and I'm happy in my own way with my chosen
path for all the reasons many listers on here can share, but braille support
has been here since Snow Leopard. It has not been substantially improved since
then; in fact, about the only improvement I can see is international grade 2
braille translation, which I thought was very welcome. iOS, on the other hand,
has seen and continues to see point updates for more braille displays, more
languages, better text input, and probably more that I've forgotten. We've got
to face it, Mac OS's braille support isn't a priority for Apple. GW Micro came
out with braille support last, and even they've managed to honour user demand
with their painfully slow release history, especially in recent years. If the
Mac is going to attract blind people, it won't be because of its braille
support. I think potential purchasers should know that.

I want to believe that Apple will revisit braille in future. I want to believe
that even point updates can bring OS X up to speed, even to iOS, which itself
isn't all that terrific, but gets better all the time. Right now, though, the
feeling is definitely one of mediocrity, as you've noted. They should mark the
braille support as "Beta".

Re: macs and braille displays

2014-08-18 Thread Cheryl Homiak
While I realize that braille on the Mac still has plenty of room for
improvement, i am still glad to have it. For one thing, to say that it is
behind "even" compared to other graphical screenreaders fails to acknowledge
that most of the other screenreaders have been under development for years and
are being worked on by companies that concentrate on blindness or low vision
issues. So I am not thinking that I would necessarily expect voiceover's
braille to be in the lead at this point. Furthermore, I would not like to see
Apple give up on braille and leave its further progress to companies that will
charge me a great deal of money to add their products to my computer. Certainly
there are free screenreaders and certainly the need for the pricing can
honestly be debated; that is not my point. I appreciate that much useful effort
is being made and I intend to do everything I can to encourage this while at
the same time pointing out the shortcomings. I am not saying we should just
accept whatever is given because it is built in to the product without
additional cost nor am i saying we should hold the braille in Apple to a lower
standard but I am saying these factors need to be taken into account.

Re: Clean My Mac 2

All I know so far is a scan is performed before a clean. After the scan
you can view the details in a separate table, but actual filenames are
shown which could be cryptic for some.

Hi Christopher
This program was recommended to me by a sighted friend also, but I have a
question here. I went to Google and searched for Clean My Mac and found a
statement that made me a little concerned until I figure it out. It said
something about taking out language files. Now since I only speak English,
maybe I wouldn't care unless somebody I wanted to sell my Mac to sometime in
the far distant future wanted other languages. The other thing is, I was
concerned that it would decide that I didn't need all those extra braille
display drivers or even printer drivers it decided I didn't need. Did the
program take off things like that, or does it give you a choice of whether you
want to do any deletions like that? Maybe I found the wrong thing when I saw
that statement.

Also, I noticed this program isn't in the App Store. Do you know why it would
not be in there?

One thing to note and have contacted the support team already regarding the

When placing an order be mindful of some unlabelled radio buttons. I ended up
placing a bank transfer order because of this. I have requested them to cancel

second of four unlabelled radio button. So please be mindful of this ok.
Otherwise enjoy the application!

Hi Georgina and Sabahattin,

Thanks so much. The problem is solved. Mavericks now runs freshly on my
macbook. With ml and earlier, it was easy to simply unpack the big dmg file for
the operating system, found in the downloaded app bundle. to a USB drive. This
new way of doing it was unknown to me. This time I did not have to go through
these hoops, but I'm definitely saving your messages for future use.

I found out about an interesting change in disk utility in Mavericks, when
compared to the older mountain lion version, just for those interested. In ml
and earlier, if you booted from the recovery mac partition, command r after the
chime while turning the computer on, then we could not delete the macintosh hd
partition with disk utility, as long as it was still encrypted. The process was
tedious. I used to have to boot up normally, turn of filevault, then let it do
its decryption process which takes hours, and only then can you reboot into the
recovery partition, and delete the macintosh partition from there. Now with
Mavericks, this is different. Whether or not macintosh hd is encrypted, you can
now wipe it using disk utility, before doing a reinstall from the recovery
partition.

Yes you can. What you need to do.

Go to your app store on the ML machine.

Download Mavericks and when the installer starts, press cancel.
Then you can provide a command line
to write it to a USB stick greater than 7.9 Gb.

Many of us did this when Mavericks first came out and discussed it here. So you
can look through this list archives. Or just use your favourite search engine.
I think there are a few utilities to automate the procedure, if that is what
you want.

In reading Mac World's guide. They suggest you should boot up your machine in
recovery mode and use disk utility to attempt to repair the disk firstly to
ensure it is functional. Article link below.

However, you should be able to sort it out yourself, I suspect. The machine
doesn't know your wireless access details. Either open up your wireless or use
a ethernet cable to link the Pro to the router.

Dear listers,

I have 2 machines, a mini and a macbook, where the macbook won't boot any
longer. I'm now writing on my mac mini, which has Mountain Lion. I'd rather not
yet update this machine to Mavericks, because I'm waiting for Yosemite. My
macbook is indeed running Mavericks already.

This afternoon, the Mavericks macbook somehow died. It won't boot. My wife
tells me there's an infinite beach ball, and the system has been used so
intensively, that I wanted to reinstall Mavericks anyway, and start anew. That
is because my macbook had lion, mountain lion, and then I updated that to
Mavericks, and the macbook deserves a fresh install. Unfortunately, the macbook
won't boot anymore.

I thought I would first restore my latest macbook time machine backup. This
went, but failed before getting to 1 %.

If I start up the macbook from its recovery partition and I then try to
reinstall OS 10, it asks for my Apple ID, and it won't get passed that, even
though there is a wifi connection according to my sighted wife. It keeps
saying: signing in to the app store, for 15 minutes. Then I gave up on that. So
now, I would like to create a Mavericks USB stick, and reinstall Mavericks
from there. My macbook running Mavericks, won't boot, nor recover, so that
machine is not an option to create the USB recovery drive with. I'll have to
create a Mavericks USB recovery stick using my mac mini, which runs Mountain
lion.

From what I discovered, I can indeed create a recovery USB drive, using my
mountain lion machine. I downloaded the Mavericks installer app, I downloaded
the diskmaker program, but when I run disk maker, it tells me that it can only
create a mountain lion USB recovery disk, and not one for Mavericks. This is
because disk maker detected mountain lion running on the system.

So, is there any way you can think of, that I can use to create a Mavericks USB
bootable installer drive for Mavericks, using my mountain lion machine? I could
update this mountain lion machine and be out of trouble right away. However, I
bumped into numerous Mavericks issues that don't occur on my current mountain
lion installation. So, if possible, I'd like to keep using ML for a few more
months, until we have Yosemite. I'm very interested to hear your solution if
there is one.

Regards,
Paul.

Re: Time Machine question

2014-08-18 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

The suggestion just may take you out of that cycle. Time Machine already is
set to delete older backups to free up space. The problem arises when your
initial backup uses up a large percentage of the HD and when Time Machine goes
to remove older backups, the initial backup will still use up lots of HD space
and the smaller incremental backups don't actually free up enough space to do
any good.

HI.
If you swap the option and command key, all you have to do is press
CTRL-command, jwait a second, then command tab works just as usual. You can
also press VO-D to get back to the desktop, the alt-command.

Hi,

Couple of points here. Firstly, if you delete all the built in keystrokes,
you have to do a lot of finger contortions that you don't actually need to
do, given that the mac keystrokes are much easier to reach than the windows
ones. I would advise people to keep them, they can actually come in really
handy. Secondly, and more importantly, if you swap the windows and alt keys
round in Windows, how can you command-tab away from Fusion, as command is
now alt, so would give you the alt-tab keystroke in Windows? Yes, it takes a
little getting used to the fusion arrangement, but it gives you far more
flexibility than doing this remapping does.

Cheers

Re: Clean My Mac 2

2014-08-18 Thread Eugenia Firth

Re: iCloud filtering?

2014-08-18 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
This is for anyone who wishes to make E-mail rules glogally using I Cloud.

1. Go to wWw.Icloud.com. Then log in to your Icloud account.

Find the button that says get mail.

2. Make sure you interact with the mail frame.

3. There will be a list of buttons. Such as mail preferences mail account etc.

4. find the add rule button and make sure your Voice Over cursor is there by
routing it if you have to and VO shift F3 to click it.

5. Here is the tricky bit. you have to select the CC and address field or from
field as there are a list of buttons. once selected, you go in to the edit
field by pressing tab. then you paste the name of the list such as the APPLE
For beginners E-mail address and then VO right until you get to choose folder
pop up button. Select the folder where you want your mail to go. This means
before you even do this process, you go in to the list of your mailboxes on
your Mac and create a new folder. Once all this is done, VO right to the done
button. then VO left again until you find another done button.

You follow all these steps again if you want to add more rules for whatever
mailing list you are on. Each time you do this, your list of rules will show. A
bit more messing about if you want to edit rules as you have to click the right
mail rule you set up with routing your VO mouse. A bit hard to do but you get
there.

This is the global way of doing it, as you can set rules using your Mac but you
might want to use your I phone or Ipad to collect mail.

Let me know how it goes. I have done this from memory as I am at work using
windows. I will send this to the Apple for beginners and Macvisionary list as
someone was asking the same questions.

Re: how to create a Mavericks installer USB drive using a mountain lion machine?

2014-08-18 Thread Paul Erkens

Whether or not macintosh hd is encrypted, you can
now wipe it using disk utility, before doing a reinstall from the recovery
partition.

If you are running the latest version of Mavericks and this has still
not sorted the problem then for whatever reason the patch Apple issued
has not taken affect on your systems.
If this is the case then the easiest way to resolve this may be a
re-install or a clean install.
The good news is that on the Mac this is a much easier and simpler
exercise to complete than on Windows but check for whether you have the

Re: A script that would remove the preview pain?

2014-08-18 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Matthew,

Here's how to remove the preview pane.

If you're in classic view, navigate to the horizontal splitter between the
headers and the message. Bring the mouse. Press down on the trackpad with one
finger and stroke down the way on the trackpad with another finger.

Sometimes it can take several attempts before the preview pane is gone.

Interacting with the splitter and dragging it downwards just makes Mail go busy.

Cheers,

Clean My Mac 2

2014-08-18 Thread Christopher Hallsworth

Hello everybody
This is to say I have tried and quickly bought the much talked about
Clean My Mac 2 application for my Late 2011 Macbook Pro. All I can say
is it is incredible! One feature that stands out for me is the ability
to reset applications in the uninstaller section. So say you screwed up
settings in an application? No problem! Use this feature to cleanly
reset the application! I of course like the other features as well but
this one stands out above the rest for me personally. I downloaded and
bought this application from

www.macpaw.com
or google Clean My Mac.
One thing to note and have contacted the support team already regarding
the below.
When placing an order be mindful of some unlabelled radio buttons. I
ended up placing a bank transfer order because of this. I have requested
them to cancel the mistakened order otherwise goodness knows what would
happen after the due date. I managed to place a second order with PayPal
which turned out to be the second of four unlabelled radio button. So
please be mindful of this ok. Otherwise enjoy the application!
