Re: Two quick Pages questions

2015-01-15 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Try pressing command-a to select all and then VO-j to jump to the format
inspector. From the styles tab of the format inspector you can adjust the font,
style, size, colour and line spacing of the text. This might not work so well
if you have different paragraph styles in your document (e.g. for different
level headings and body etcetera).

Also, in future, remember when pasting text you can use the paste and match
style command to ensure the text you paste adopts the style in use at the
insertion point.

Re: iMac versus MBA?

2015-01-15 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi. I actually had to get rid of all my vocalizer voices because Voiceover was
slow even when changing to something else. As a suggestion to people who still
want or need multilingual voices, I recommend a few voices from Acapela and a
few from Cereproc. The web address to check out the Cereproc voices is
cereproc.com and of course to check out the Acapela voices go to
assistiveware.com
I've tested all these brands of voices under Yosemite and they have no lag at
all. One thing I will warn you about is that Cereproc's voices are around 40 to
$45 so be prepared.

have any of you had exp;eeriness with this app? this is the second version of
it that you can’t log in with. I used 2 versions ago until it wouldn’t work
with the iOS any more. even though I have an active account, I can’t log in.
when I wrote to them about this here’s the response I got:

Jeffery R. replied:
We do not provide support for Voiceover. Your account is active and you should
be able to login with it.

If Voiceover is preventing you from logging in, then you will need to contact
Voiceover support to learn more about their compatibility with iPhones and
third party cookie placement.

Hey I am working on a document in Mavericks in Pages and I have done some copy
and pasting in it, and want to make sure the font is all the same for the
entire document. I thought the easiest way to do this was a select all and just
go to the font menu, but for some reason I am missing it. Also some of the
document came out double spaced instead of single spaced. I remember seeing a
way to synchronize the spacing of an entire document but cannot seem to find it
now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Re: some calendar issues on osx 10.10.1 and iOS 8.1.2

2015-01-15 Thread Nicholas Parsons
I haven’t experienced a loss of entries, but VoiceOver fails to announce some
entries for me on certain days. I’m not sure what it is about these entries,
but VoiceOver announces some and not others. The way I can tell that they are
not lost but that VoiceOver is simply failing to announce them is (1) by using
arrow keys instead of VO keys to navigate through the calendar events; (2)
using views other than month view (month view is my preferred view); and (3)
asking sighted help to verify.

Hi Alex,
They don’t need to be iCloud users to receive an invitation. They just need an
email address, or perhaps even just a mobile number. It works with Microsoft
Exchange calendars, Outlook, Google Calendar etcetera. But really the purpose
of adding them as an invitee is not so the event appears in their calendar, but
just for your own reference so you have an easy way of accessing their contact
details, calling and SMS-ing them etcetera.

Re: clean my mac questions

2015-01-15 Thread David Griffith
The unlabelled buttons are not an issue for me as basically I run the
app almost entirely through the menu bar.

This procedure replaces the unlabelled button functions.

1. Go to menu. Press A for actions.
2. Cursor down once for Scan and press return.
2. Go to menu again and A again for Actions. Now cursor down once to
clean and press return.

3. Enter your password when prompted by the app.
4. The app will play a tone when cleaning is completed.
5. Normally I then close the app. It is all very fast and easy and most
of the time this is all I do.

Other more specialized aspect of the app are fully accessible through a
system of tables for actions you want to take.

Once you have selected an Action you wish to take then again go to the
menu bar, press A for action and then cursor down once to execute the
action which you have selected in the table.

 Hi Phil,

Not sure why this happens, but I suspect it has something to do with
changing the size of the table through altering the width of the columns,
numbers of rows etc. You can change the order of the tables by using the
“Arrange” tab of the format inspector. In particular, adjust the X and Y
position coordinates of the table and you will change where it appears on
the canvas. Take note of the size width and height values for the tables
to work out how best to layout your tables to ensure they don’t overlap.
Overlapping tables makes very little difference to VoiceOver users, except
perhaps when it comes to drag and drop columns or rows, but it of course
makes a big difference if you are ever going to show the spreadsheet to
 sighted people.

the default RAM could be around 8 GB which should not exhibit choppy
speech like you’ve mentioned. I use VO on some older iMacs when
setting these machines up at my work, and they are slower at starting,
slower at logging in but once everything in the background has
finished doing its thing, VO works normally. Make sure that you have
the checkbox unchecked to re-open windows/applications when logging
back in. This box is visible when you go to logout. Also, make sure
you don’t have any apps set to automatically open as this can slow
down the startup process as well. There are enough processes going on
in the background as it is during startup and login that make it feel
slow that adding extra things simply prolong the wait.

 HTH.

Using Alex on iMacs as old as 2008 with Mavericks installed and as little as 2

Re: iMac versus MBA?

2015-01-15 Thread Jeffrey Shockley
Hi,
I agree, 8 GB should be fine. That’s twice the amount that I have in here,
because I’ve never upgraded anything internally on here, and it works fine.
Just to see what would happen, I switched to one of the Vocalizer voices, and I
experienced choppy speech, and it did slow things down quite a bit. But, once I
switched to something else other than one of those voices, then everything sped
up, as the CPU was freed up. Sitting here now, using Alex as an example, I have
4 programs up including Mail, and I have 88.9% of the CPU free, and none of the
swopp file is being used. Nothing using Flash is up either. Adobe Flash Player
is also a CPU hog, so anything running that is using it, could cause the slow
down.
Just going through things I have seen slow down my Macs here.
I hope this helps,

 Hello,
I completely agree here. I’ve had this iMac here for a while now, and once
everything loads up, it’s pretty fast, and it’s one from a couple years

is Spotlight could be indexing everything in the background still for the
first time, depending on how much stuff is on the drive.
Also, making sure all updates to OS X and all apps are up-to-date will
 also help.
Another thing that may also help, is running a Repair Permissions scan on
 the drive using Disc Utility.
Also, if Filevolt is turned on, which it is by default now after a new
installation of Yosemite, then that could be the cause of the slowness
and, after turning Filevolt off, it will work much better. I’ve seen stuff
like this discussing Filevolt and system slowness at first before.
You can turn this off by going into the Security and Privacy pane of
System Preferences, and going to the Filevolt tab and VO spacing on it.
Once this loads, if you VO right, it will tell you whether Filevolt is on,
and let you turn it off. It will say it is dimmed until you VO space on
where it says “Click here to make changes.” Then, you put inn your
password, and you can make the change.
 Hope this helps,

mac mini 2012 model hard drive?

2015-01-15 Thread Hank Smith, and Seeing-eye dog Iona

Hello a power surge took out my mac mini
the hard drive still spins up what size is the hard drive as far as what
it will fit in.

I plan on getting a usb drive enclosure for the hard drive.
I won't be able to get a mac for quite a while at this point.
thanks
Hank

Press return to begin a scan. When you hear the chime press return again to do
a clean. Use the items in the view menu or press command-number to switch to
the different modes of operation such as automatic cleaning which is command-1.

Google for it. I use it and like it a lot. I paid for it because of what it
could do. You can only clean up to 500 MB in the trial.

Hi,
I don’t know about the unlabeled buttons.

I do know that if you use the free version, it doesn’t really clean anything,
just supposedly finds stuff that needs to be cleaned. For it to work fully,
you need to buy the program. this is why I personally haven’t purchased it.
Makes me leary that it doesn’t clean with the free version, but works with

clean my mac questions

2015-01-15 Thread Faisal ali
Hi all,
I just downloaded clean my mac and have couple of questions. when I first load
the app, all the buttons such as automatic clean, manually clea are all dimmed.
Is there something I do to allow it to clean my machine? I tried navigating
around but there are a lot of unlabelled buttons as well so nothing is really
popping out at me.
Also, I saw that it also offers a full version. What’s the difference between
the full version and the free version? this wasn’t made clear on their website.
Thanks

If your machine is of an even a more recent spec and not performing then there

The biggest factors in slowing Voiceover down for me are
1. Not using Alex as default voice creates problems.
2. I have learnt not to use activities.
3. The number of external drives I have attached makes a difference. If these
multiply then the time the Mac takes to boot increases a lot, especially if

4. Permissions repair and using clean my Mac also seems to speed up matters.

Generally I would have a look at what is being loaded at start up to see if

Re: iMac versus MBA?

2015-01-15 Thread Jeffrey Shockley
Hi,
another thing it could also be is using the Vocalizer voices (Samantha, Jill,
Tom, etc.) If using these voices, it will cause a slow down potentially,
although not always. This is because of the increased CPU usage and maybe RAM
usage? Not sure, of VoiceOver and it’s processes. Found this out by looking in
Activity Monitor one day. Also, if you go into VoiceOver Utility, it may be
trying to download the newer version of the Alex Voice.
Hope this helps,

Hi,
It’s in System Preferences/Security and Privacy. Once there, select (VO Space)

will be dimmed until you click where it says “Click here to make changes,” and
you’ll have to enter your password to make the options become available.

the hope that that will speed up the boot time and get rid of VO dragging.

Subject: Re: Sheet layout area in numbers

I think there is a basic misunderstanding here. I am referring to the order in
which the table names appear in the sheet layout area. That is, when I interact
with the slo, and then VO right arrow through the table names contained
therein, their order changes, not the names themselves.
for example, in one sheet I have four tables named
expenses, cash, income, reserve e.
They appear in that order when I interact and then VO arrow right.
then after doing some work in a table, the order may change to something other
than that order, say,
cash, income, expenses, reserve
or some other random ordering.
I think that numbers is automatically shifting this ordering around to reflect
some visual arrangement of the tables on the canvas that is changing due to
changes made to the tables themselves, either their size or something.

Again, I think it has to do with numbers fitting these four tables on the
canvas and shifting the ordering of the table names in the SLO to reflect that
physical re-arrangement.

Just a guess though. I hope I’ve made the problem clear.
 .
It’s just a nuisance, no data is lost or anything like that. It’s just that you
get used to a certain arrangement and then it is changed for no apparent reason
requiring different keystrokes to do your work.

in a sheet layout area is not able to be changed through drag n drop, or

an example, with three tables in a sheet, t1, t2, t3, listed from left to

any experience with this problem? It isn’t a show-stopper, but you get
used to having your tables listed in a certain order in the sheet layout

Yes it does the same if they do not use iCloud. I have a client who does this
with me using Microsoft exchange and windows from their job.

You get a email and just activate the link and it opens a event in the calander

Sounds good, but often, these people (clients I work with) aren't iCloud users,
so an invitation wouldn't work. Perhaps just adding them to the location field
will work well enough.

If the event is at the person’s house or work, you type their name in both the
location and invitee fields. If the event is with the person but at some other
location, you just type their name in the invitee field. Adding the person as
an invitee means that person will receive an invitation to the event, and will
receive updates if you change any event details such as time, date or location.
It also gives you a handy button to send mail to invitees, and lists each
invitee. If you tap on an invitee on the iOS Calendar app you see their contact
details and can text or call them. Adding them to the location field means
Calendar knows you will want to travel to their address, will let you know when
you need to leave in order to reach their in time and shows you a map of the
location of the event. So you can use both the location and invitee fields
depending on exactly what you want to achieve.

Yes, absolutely. In the event inspector you can select add invitees. This
allows you to add people from your contacts. If the event is taking place at
John’s house, you can type, “John” in the location field, and Calendar will pop
up suggestions of places you might mean. You can navigate between the
suggestions using the up and down arrows with QuickNav turned off. One of the
suggestions will be “John’s Home” or “John’s Work”, if you have those addresses
in contacts. You press return on the one you want and it will insert the
address. It will then know where you are going for that event, will calculate

For instance, if I have John in my contacts and I set up an event for next

That way, as I'm looking at the event, I could contact John directly, look up
his address as I'm heading over, that kind of thing? I'm not talking about
inviting people, I mean indicating to the Calendar app that this event will
take place with a particular contact, so I can then quickly access that contact

Re: iMac versus MBA?

2015-01-15 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

Thanks for all the great advice about the iMac. I have no external drives
attached, but I am not using Alex. It's weird, that does seem to mess things
up, and I don't get that either. It's not a problem on my MBA. I had meant to
check how much RAM it has before I signed out yesterday, I'll definitely do
that this morning. I think it has either 4 or 8, so I'd been thinking about
having it upgraded to 16. I will do a repair permissions as well, I had
thought about that but then forgot later.

thanks, Jeff, for the FileVault tip That was one I hadn't thought of at all,
because I've never used it. I'll make sure it's turned off.

Again, thanks everyone, these are some great tips.
Cheers,
Donna

Sounds good, but often, these people (clients I work with) aren't iCloud users,
so an invitation wouldn't work. Perhaps just adding them to the location field

And of course once you open the context menu one of the first few options is
“Sort ascending”, and the next is “Sort Descending”. Those are for sorting

columns. You can also use multiple sort keys. So, what method are you
saying doesn’t seem to work? Did you forget to press enter or VO space on
the header selections? You know after entering the headers and arrowing
down to either row or column headers, did you first press enter before
trying to arrow right or left to the specific column header to use? It’s
the only thing I can think of that you might have not done. I re-read my

Re: Sheet layout area in numbers

2015-01-15 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Yep, I understand. I have seen that happen once, and I think only once, for me,
and I use spreadsheets regularly with multiple tables and multiple sheets. I’m
not sure of anything you can do to prevent it. You can, however, fix it once it
does occur, using the arrangement tab of the format inspector. However, if it’s
happening regularly to you I can understand that rearranging the tables is
probably more effort than getting use to the new layout.

One thing that might be worth trying is to ensure the tables aren’t overlapping
originally. Perhaps if they’re overlapping in the first place, doing something
to them might cause Numbers to rearrange them to make them no longer
overlapping. If you arrange them so that they’re not overlapping and not likely
to overlap, then you might avoid the reordering from occurring.

Re: Tying contacts to calendar events?

2015-01-15 Thread Nicholas Parsons

Re: iMac versus MBA?

2015-01-15 Thread David Griffith
I am using an iMac from 2011 and if you have ever listened to any of my
Podcasts you should be able to hear that it is a pretty fast machine.

However back in 2011 I invested in a 256GB solid state drive and 16 GB
of ram. I have never regretted doing this.

If your machine is of an even a more recent spec and not performing then
there may be something else wrong.

The biggest factors in slowing Voiceover down for me are
1. Not using Alex as default voice creates problems.
2. I have learnt not to use activities.
3. The number of external drives I have attached makes a difference. If
these multiply then the time the Mac takes to boot increases a lot,
especially if they are slow big drives.

4. Permissions repair and using clean my Mac also seems to speed up matters.

Generally I would have a look at what is being loaded at start up to see
if what is being loaded and take out anything you do not need.
