Hi,
It sounds like you’re still using an older version of radium as the method you
described appears no longer to be the case.

Re: YFI Vs Hard-wired?

2015-09-21 Thread Scott Granados
Most likely, having a hard wire would have made 0 (no ) difference. Depending
on the type of FIOS you have, that’s the qualifier here. Unless you have a
service greater than 300 megabits it won’t make a bit of difference. If you
have a 50 megabit service for example it takes the same amount of time to
transfer using WiFi as it does wired because the choke point here is the actual
Internet connection, your download will go only as fast as the slowest link.
Now, if you’re like me and have the 500 megabit FIOS service then my answer
changes. WiFi unless you have the latest 802.11AC (which the latest macbook
pro does support) you have a theoretical maximum of 1.3 gigabits but in most
settings, you’ll get a full gigabit over the wire and something less than that
over WiFi. In that setup it’s possible the WiFi could be the slower choke
point than either the Internet connection or the Wire.
If you still do want to buy a wire or if you really do have one of the
faster tiers of service buy a category 6 ethernet cable. They make them
varying lengths or you can get your own ends and wire and cut the wire to your
own specific length. I would suggest remade wires if you’re a new user as it’s
the most simple. You’ll plug one end in to your router, the other in to the
port on your computer and you’ll be good to go. Note on the Macbook Pro you’ll
need a specific ethernet adapter which is not included and is a $30 add on.
Make sure you have this port if you want to go the wired route. Let me know if
that helps and I wish you good luck.

Re: Apple car, anyone?

2015-09-21 Thread Scott Granados
Dona, the bigger question is can we afford not to have it? Even if it’s 100K
the point is you’ll work it out. Whether it’s interest free loans for the
blind or regular interest loans from the auto market you’ll make it work.
Costs will be high at first but they will drop and they will drop quickly
because these aren’t devices for just the blind, it’s for everyone so the mass
market and mass production economies of scale come in to play. Even if it’s
100K though I for one would save up and finance what I couldn’t cover.

Re: Apple car, anyone?

2015-09-21 Thread Scott Granados
Bill, you have a few laws of physics that are in the way of the transporter.

First, the heisenberg uncertainty principle says that the more you try to
determine the position of any given particle the more you impact it’s
environment and can’t know it’s exact position. Let’s say you solve that
problem you then have an information problem. The amount of information it
would take to beam a person would take more bandwidth than has been deployed
since the beginning of the universe. (at least as far as we’re concerned some
other species we don’t know of may have beat us to the punch but we have no way
to prove that yet)
Assuming you then solve the information problem and you solve the
uncertainty problem you have the problem that no 2 exact copies can exist in
the universe at any one time. So the act of beaming would destroy the original
and create a perfect copy in the new location. Do to the principle of quantum
super positioning you couldn’t have the original (you) and the copy (you
copied) exist at the same time. So the question you have to ask your self is
even if I know where my particles are and even if I have enough bandwidth to
transmit them would I want to because I wouldn’t be me, I’d be an exact copy of
me indistinguishable from the original. So yeah beaming could be a strange
experience.
Note though IBM and some other companies have successfully beamed
individual photons and basic components like that. Having the ability to
teleport photons would be good for quantum computers. So there is work being
done in this area, I’m just not sure you’ll want to jump in one to get baseball
tickets.

VMWare.

2015-09-21 Thread Sadam Ahmed
Hi all,

Just wondering what’s new with VMWare 8.0?

If I do end up purchasing is there a way to set up a dedicated JAWS key?

I remember doing this in 6.0 but even after using Sharp keys some JAWS
functionality didn’t work in the virtual machine.

As always thanks for any assistance.

Getting on this kind of late, but I noticed while using whats app on IOS 9,
whats app is laggier. there’s a bit of a lag overall through out as well. Also,
I noticed that notification sounds are not coming through consistently. This
only happens randomly, but it definitely happens regularly. Its not as big of a
problem, but still annoying.

one poster points out here possibly a third way. Apple support says go
to "settings>general>accessibility>keyboard" When in keyboard they
suggest to turn off lowercase keys. This will take some time getting
use to as it appears to lock it in uppercase and in order to get it
out of uppercase you have to remember to tap on the shift key. The
alternate method that Apple recommends is to start typing the message
and when you need to lock shift in capslock mode tap the shift key and
get it into uppercase mode then use the roter and once you are on
action flick up or down till you get to capslock. They say they are
 looking into it though.

It's really not so hard if you simply press VO space on that button, and then
vo command plus tea. That brings you straight to the stations table and then
you can interact. If you use the right finger combinations you don't even
really have to move your left hand it's just too quick movements vo space

Re: who can upgrade to El Capitan

2015-09-21 Thread Mike Arrigo
In short, if you mac can run mountain lion and above, it will be able
to run el capitan.

Original message:

Hello all,

Where do I get the info about which Macs can upgrade to El Capitan?
Also, how do I find out what model of computer I have. Will the Mac App
store automatically let me know if I can upgrade or not by prompting me
to upgrade or does the App store automatically prompt me to upgrade my
computer even if it’s too old?

Thanks,
Christina

Re: VMWare Fusion causes very poor battery life on Retina Macbook Pro

2015-09-21 Thread Mike Arrigo
I've heard of this happening even when using boot camp. This is one
reason among others why I left the windows world and do everything
using the mac O.S.

Original message:
Hi everyone, since migrating from a Macbook Air to a retina Macbook
Pro, battery life when using Fusion has been very disappointing.
Obviously I'd expect to take a bit of a hit, since I'm running two
operating systems at once, but in some cases I am only getting about
three hours. It was far better with the Air.
I'm looking for strategies to do all I can to maximise battery life as
I enjoy having access to both operating systems at once, and would
prefer not to Bootcamp if I can help it. Windows is my primary OS
though, so I need to try and improve the situation.
I've gone into the virtual machine settings and have disabled graphics
acceleration. I've also told it not to use full resolution for retina display.
I'll ask VMWare directly, but right now their support seems to be going
through a system upgrade.
One thing in researching this issue is that it would appear VMWare
Fusion Pro may be better at giving you control over whether the virtual
machine uses the dedicated GPU or not, which I think is probably what's
doing a lot of the draining.
Can anyone confirm that VMWare Fusion Pro might be a better bet in
terms of energy consumption?

Thanks a lot.

Hi Sadam, there's plenty of information on the VMWare site about what's new in

The best summary I have seen of how to get a JAWS key working in Fusion is in
this blog post.

Cooking with terabytes

2015-09-21 Thread Mary Otten
Good old Alex has discovered a new cooking term. Did you know that when you're
making short ribs in the slow cooker, you need to add one and a half terabytes
of balsamic vinegar? When, when, will the folks who make the speech
synthesizers stop trying to guess what abbreviations mean and leave it up to
us, the human readers with the smarts, to figure it out for ourselves?

Hi,
It looks like VoiceOver does the same thing with the number or hash
symbol, also known more commonly as the hashtag nowadays. I’ll explain the best
I can.
So, for example, if you type #email #computer or any word with the number sign
in front of it, VoiceOver reads that symbol as hashtag. This makes since in
things like Twitter, but it does it everywhere. LOL. There are other things
that use that symbol, and not just hashtags for social media. Crazy stuff. :)

Re: Cooking with terabytes

2015-09-21 Thread Scott Granados
Hash tag is the correct name for that symbol though. We in the US call it the
number sign but I believe the word hash is used globally. Might explain the
difference. Also terabytes or TB/S could be interchanged with table spoons but
terabytes is correct and probably selected since it’s used commonly in
computing yet both are correct so the original poster raises a good point.
There aught to be modes where acronyms are used say a technical mode that
favors terabytes and a home mode or consumer mode that favors table spoons. Or
if that doesn’t work some way to select the correct usage maybe based
automatically on context.

Re: VMWare.

2015-09-21 Thread Grant
These look like the same directions I posted to the list earlier in the year
(https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/macvisionaries/EO_nu0uIy70). I’d agree
this is the best method we have for now but you should be aware that this will
disable your caps lock key in all OS X apps. I believe using Seil and
Karabiner, there should be a way to write an XML script which would remap caps
lock only in the VMWare app, and otherwise allow the key to work normally. If
someone is interested in exploring this to see how well it works, I’d be
interested to hear the results. I’ve been meaning to get around to this one day.

2015-09-21 Thread Scott Granados
If apple makes it, people won’t care. They will buy it simply because it’s
from Apple.

:)

If apple made steak knives people would buy them just because they had a big
apple with a bite out on the handle.

next to Dolby labs and got a tour once. They had a demonstration of a
window that looked outside and then a screen mounted in the wall that
looked exactly the same shape / size as the real window and the
demonstration was you had to guess which one was real and which was a
screen. Most people couldn’t tell the difference. So if they have
technology like that probably sited users won’t mind if it’s a glass
screen instead of a glass window. Only difference is you can’t roll it
down. That being said though the car would be much safer because it
doesn’t have all the cutout spots for windows and viewing areas. You can
use solid metal panels and have a lot more rigidity and structural
stability with out the window so crashes should be safer.

Taking notes for meeting, Mac or iPad?

2015-09-21 Thread Mary Otten
I have been asked to substitute as a minutes take her for an upcoming meeting.
I used to do this on a PC laptop in MS Word with complete confidence and
competence. However, that laptop is long since gone and buried.
At this point, my choices are to use my eye pad with a Bluetooth keyboard and
pray that I don't get bit by the Bluetooth bug in iOS 9, choosing among apps
such as voice dream writer or the new notes app. Or I could borrow my husbands
11 inch MacBook air, with which I am not that familiar, and use something like
text at it. Neither prospect is exciting. I'm looking for something that is
going to be reliable and foolproof. As in me being a fool and screwing up their
minutes. What do people think would be the easiest thing to do the most
foolproof thing? This is, assuming I don't get the Bluetooth bug that wipes out
my iPad? Most about using the MacBook is hitting that darned oversized touchpad
and ending up somewhere where I really don't want to be and not having a clue
how to get back where I need to be in the text writing app.

Re: Apple car, anyone?

2015-09-21 Thread Scott Granados
Not really, we spend that kind of money all the time. We spend 3 or 4 times
that on a house (depending on geographic area and the market). We spend that
on college, something as fundamental as transportation I’m sure they will. If
you have the job to support it or a family collectively with the income and a
blind child don’t you think the parents would save up for long enough to set
that child up with transportation when they get old enough? It depends on what
transportation is worth to you. If you don’t need it, use public transit and
it meets your needs you may not care, just like the sited in fact. Lots of
people in the center of cities don’t own cars, they don’t need them. However,
if you’re like the 90% of us who live outside the city center, off the public
transit path and you need to get to work you’ll make it happen. I’m for
special financing for blind users and things to offset the expense for the
poorest among us because I do believe removing the transportation barrier will
do us all a huge amount of good. Also, the 6 figure price tag will almost
certainly drop rapidly because of the sited interest. It will be just another
option on most cars shortly after. Folks like Tesla and BMW will do the heavy
lifting and the features will trickle down in to the Hondas and Fords of the
world. My car now will follow the lane markers, break and gas and control
itself in traffic as it stands. It’s not much more to go to make it work end
to end and my car was only 56K not 100+.

Re: Taking notes for meeting, Mac or iPad?

2015-09-21 Thread Scott Granados
Hi Mary,
I would go with the Mac. It’s pretty intuitive and for what you want to do you
could learn that in a few minutes judging by your skill and sharpness
demonstrated on list. Text edit is very easy to use and you could have the mac
in sleep mode, wake it up and be right in text edit removing a lot of the pre
navigation. The IPAD isn’t bad but bluetooth isn’t it’s native environment.
As you said you could get in to the weeds. +1 on the Mac for ease of use from
me.

Maybe 810 without the K. Don’t remember.

Re: Apple car, anyone?

2015-09-21 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
Who says you need to own the thing yourself? If you could summon one in
10 minutes at will using an app from a fleet stored somewhere close by,
wouldn't that suffice? Most cars sit most of the time so they should be
a shared resource. The trouble is usually the last mile getting a taxi
to your door or getting to the nearest bus/metro stop. A self driving
car could eliminate that incentive for people keeping (one or more)
vehicles parked at their house. Of course Apple would have to include
the iClean service which makes sure any mess left by the previous
passenger was taken care of.

Hi. Yes, on top of car payments, there would be insurance,
registration, yearly inspections, gas/electricity, oil changes, tires,
alignment, and the list goes on.

And yes, we'd be responsible for those costs just like a sighted
person. (And, that is how it should be!)

..and how It has been for many for years.
I remember when I worked for xerox, I knew many individuals experiencing
sight loss who owned cars.

I cannot imagine why the responsibility should be any difference.
If memory serves bMW will have some of their self driving cars on the
roads in Canada later this year if not next.
its a mode of transportation folks, lots of people would rather be
driven, electronically
that has nothing to do with ones eye chart score.
I respect that some prefer the two sides of the same coin take on
vision...but wonder how this serves anyone where understanding is
concerned. Let alone having a large basis in reality.

There were some photos leaked a while back, who knows since they are
rumors but they basically had a pod that had 4 wheels (it’s not a 3
wheeler like some models) and it had no (0) windows. Think about
that for a minute. What it did have were screens and cameras and a
ton of autonomous driving features.
You’d also be interested in what Google is doing. They have already
had blind folks operating their autonomous vehicles for a while now.
I believe that one of the engineers on the project is blind but I
haven’t been able to come up with a name. I saw a special on CNBC
about a year ago and can’t recall the gentleman’s name they had who
was using the car to get to and from work and to the store etc. It
would drop him off in front of the grocery store door, he’d do his
thing and come out and hit a key fob that would summon the car that
had parked it self and it pulled up and picked him up.

Never thought I’d see it in my lifetime, shocks me how far along they

Re: Apple car, anyone?

2015-09-21 Thread Scott Granados
You have a great point. Tesla already has a research division that wants to do
exactly what you’re saying and Uber now is one of the largest investors in self
driving cars. You could buy your train ticket on the phone, summon a ride that
could sync up with the train schedule to bring you the rest of the way and have
the whole thing work on your phone.
Another application are super efficient high speed freeways. You could
reserve lanes or have entire roads that do not allow human drivers. The
computers could accelerate the cars to 100 even 200 + MPH, have them operate
with in 6 inches of each other to optimize drag and auto drive you rapidly
around your region. Not only do they plan to have the cars talk to each other
so such a thing could be coordinated but inputs are available for a centralized
control operation so some combination could allow you to slip in to a slot on a
freeway near your town and say drive from New York to DC in an hour and a half
(probably not needed do to mass transit) but more likely might be Still Water
Oklahoma to Amarillo in 2 hours where population density doesn’t support public
transit.
Combine this with the Hyper Loop project and technologies like that
making train like travel possible at over 750 MPH well it would be like Buck
Rogers. I never thought I would see things like this in my life time let alone
the next decade.

Re: Apple car, anyone?

2015-09-21 Thread Scott Granados
So you raise an interesting point, insurance should be almost 0. This is
because humans aren’t driving. I can imagine a time when autonomous drivers
are heavily incentivized by insurance rates or even a point in the distant
future when human driving is uninsurable to the point where human driving is
band on many if not all roads. Machines are always better at humans at these
type of jobs. They never lose focus, they don’t get drunk, they don’t have
road rage, they don’t rubber neck, they don’t text and drive or if they do they
have true multitasking:), they never fall asleep, and on and on. Redundancy
covers the failure model and it’s eventually in the future destined to be
almost entirely automated. If you doubt it just look at aviation today.
Comercial aviation is almost entirely automated. The response to the Asiana
Air crash in San Francisco do to the disabling of the automatic landing system
and allowing the humans to fly was for our FAA to ban human directed flight
from Asian carriers in to San Francisco. Flights especially on the newest air
craft don’t even require humans to taxi and they can literally self pilot from
gate to gate. This is standard now, the Airbus doesn’t even have flight
controls, it’s all glass and computers and you fly with a mouse. We could have
entirely pilotless aircraft today if it weren’t for the Unions and political
pressure on the FAA. NASA has a sky highway project to accommodate small
flying cars that are self driving that will snap in to different lanes in the
air for high speed local travel. So insurance won’t be a big deal in fact it
might b a motivator.
I invision a lot of these cars as being electric or alternate fueled so
we’d have to revisit the operational cost model. Maintenance should be far
less because if they are electric vehicles they are much simpler than gas
powered vehicles to operate and maintain. If you buy a tesla today in most
cases they prepare it on site like in your parking lot at work or home driveway
with mobile service teams.
As mentioned though, if we go to a shared model like an uber the costs
change radically, especially with out the overhead of drivers.

Rename files According to ID3 info?

2015-09-21 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I have a ton of files which are correctly tagged in their ID3 info. The issue
is, I really do not want to import them into ITunes for various reasons.

Each of these file names only has the name of the song. I.E: Heartaches
Tonight.mp3, How do you feel.mp3, What did I do.mp3, etc. They don't list the
track numbers in the file name, I.E: 01 - What did I do.mp3.

Short of importing these into ITunes, which I do not want to do, and for that
mind, refuse! to do, is there any application I could get that would
automatically grab the track number from the ID3 info of each file, and append
the track number to the beginning of the file name? Provided it's not super
super expensive, I'm willing to pay, if the app isn't freeware. I'm desperet.
Freeware is preferred, but at this point, I'll consider a paid app as a last
resort, if I absolutely must.

Chris.

changing order of (known) wifi-networks

2015-09-21 Thread William Windels
Hello all,

In the preferences of the network-settings , there you can change the order of
the known networks in the tab advanced.
This would be nice to change for me because the computer should try co connect
first to the known networks with best quality.

I see no way with voiceover to change that order of the known networks.
drag and drop seems not to work vo+shift+m gives also no options, and citing
and pasting isn’t working also.

Any ideas or is this not possible?

Many thx,
William

Re: IOS9 anf VO with Bluetooth keyboard On iPad 2 Air

2015-09-21 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

Guys,

There is a bug in I O S 9 with Bluetooth.

This isn't just happening to one person. Bluetooth with Voiceover and I O S
9 is quite problematic. This is a bug that myself and many others tried
reporting to Apple during the beta cycle, but alas, they never resolved the
issue. Frankly, I'm not going to go into a long tyrate, nor debate about
this. If you genuinely want more details, then write me off list.

clgillan...@gmail.com

All I'll say for now is, this is very typical, and doesn't surprise me, that
they didn't fix the bug. Read into that statement as you will. As I said,
write me off list if you want further details.

First, try turning the device off and then on again. This clears up many
initial errors.

Re: Taking notes for meeting, Mac or iPad?

2015-09-21 Thread David Chittenden
As I am extremely proficient with braille screen input, I actually use my
iPhone or iPad for taking notes in meetings. I use a bluetooth earpiece for
audio feedback (words) as a double-check (something I even need when typing). I
am quicker and more accurate with braille.

Hi,

You should be able to arrow or tab to a pause button. You can then bring up the
context menu by pressing shif+VO+m. You can then arrow down and there should be
an option that says something like download video. Click on that and your
dropbox file should download.

Re: Finally figured out how to not have every email in a thread read to me

2015-09-21 Thread Chris Moore
Hello,
Thanks to helpful comments in this and other threads, I’ve just started using
classic view and have discovered the following:
1. You can move the horizontal splitter out of the way by interacting with the
percentage slider. No need to figure out how to drag it out of the way with
the mouse or trackPad.

2. Once you interact with the message list you can move the subject header to
the left of the from header using the VO drag and drop commands.

3. Reading the messages can be done with VO + j and VO + j a second time to
return to the list.

4. If you have messaged organized by conversation, the right and left arrows
expand and contract the messages within the conversation.

5. While interacting with the message table, move between columns with VO +
right/left and move up and down with up/down keys. The nice thing about this
is that you can focus on the subject column and quickly browse the topics with
the up/down arrow keys, and only the subjects are announced by VO.

No. The Mac cannot use the MTP protocol, so the mac does not work with the

Re: Dropbox on Mac (was: Scanning text on the MAC)

2015-09-21 Thread William Gallik
Eileen,

Like you, I am in transition from Windows to Mac. One thing I have done to help
this along is to migrate one activity at a time from the windows PC to my Mac.
For instance, I have my Gmail going to my mac rather than to windows. There are
other examples, but I don't want to bore anybody with the details. But I'm sure
you get the idea.

The point is, you don't have to do everything at one time. Just get comfortable
was one activity and then after you become comfortable with it, migrate
something else.
