Re: Uh, guys? We've got a problem with KNFB Reader for I O S.

2015-10-22 Thread Michael Babcock
seems to be a bug; as if you go to settings and change the default reading
rate, once you close KNFB out of the app switcher the speaking rate returns to
20%
The way i’ve found to get around this is to either #1 adjust reading rate when
first opening app (not ideal but doable)
or #2, just keep knob in the app switcher and it seems to work when you don’t
close it.
best.

Hi!
I really don’t know whats up but i seem to not be able to boot on the el
capitan disks i make with diskmaker x.
I can not boot from the usb drive i have from either startup disk or by
pressing the option key and selecting the disk.
When i do i get into recovery mode.
The disk is formated as mac extended journal and as guid partition.
I wonder if the downloaded proram is corrupt.

Re: Uh, guys? We've got a problem with KNFB Reader for I O S.

2015-10-22 Thread Eileen Scrivani
I’m not sure exactly when it started in the KFB Reader, but I suspect it was
with the release of IOS 9. At that time I needed to use a web site for a
purchase and when prompted to update my credit card info (i.e. experation month
and year) using picker buttons, it would not work. Other people on the
IDevices list said they have had the problem with the picker buttons ... same
type of thing as in KFB Reader where you need to double tap then flick up/down
to change/select a value. Its just not working.

In all honesty, I have not had a reason to try updating credit card info again,
but I doubt its been fixed since so many other things are working crappily.

Hello all,
I am trying to find a direct link to purchase office 2016 for mac. Does anyone
have it? Do I have to purchase Microsoft 365 to use from the web or is there an
app I purchase to download to my Mac? thanks for any assistance.

Re: Cereproc And El Capitan, Very Disappointing

2015-10-22 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi!

I have never been impressed with Cereproc and their voices, so I can't say this
is very surprising they do not work, at least at the moment. Years ago when I
first tried them they barely worked, either, and contacting them didn't really
resolve anything except they said they would look into it. It's unfortunate,
since I like having a lot of choices, but Ivona said the same thing to me two
years ago.

Here's to hoping! 🍻

Yes, exactly the same problem I was having with it this afternoon while trying

I tried to tap and then flick up/down it would do “N.O.T.H.I.N.G.”

Yeah, they needed to update these to work with System Integrity Protection, but
the voices themselves are pretty useless. :(

I’m prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt since they’re clearly not an
Apple firm, but I still stand by my earlier recommendation. It’s just not
worth it. In fact, I’m finding that I no longer install voices for the
language until I really require them, sticking only to the default enhanced
voice and Alex exclusively. I think this probably just means you’ll get the
best experience with the chosen system default voices which can easily be
accessed with VoiceOver Utility.

Re: From Yosemite to El Capitan and Back: One New User's Story

2015-10-22 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Well, speak for yourselves. Everybody is, of course, different and has
different preferences. I know that, given the choice to use classic view over
the “Modern” view, I would ordinarily choose the classic view, for all the
flexibility it gives me. It isn’t for everyone and I can see how the modern
view might fit certain workflows, but I like granularity and efficiency over
the convenience of a single-window display.

I’m using the modern view now to overcome the slowness of classic. I have made
a note to try MailMate, as a solution to the gradual degradation of Mail on OS
X. Using the modern view is tolerable but there’s no way I’ll be as happy
using this method in the long-term—not even with the preview pane on, which
brings a fresh set of problems with it.

It is worth noting that the classic view has been supported since Lion; that’s
five releases now. When do you think Apple will drop it? On the other hand,
when do you think Apple will fix it?

2015-10-22 Thread Ray Foret Jr
I noticed exactly the same thing. On the very right, there is a slider that
let's you adjust the speaking rate. However, I noticed that, every time I open
the KNFB reader, the speed goes back to 20% (twenty percent). That means that
I have to adjust it every single time. It makes no difference whether I adjust
it in the settings menu or on the fly.

Y'all, this has just got to be fixed.

Re: Cereproc And El Capitan, Very Disappointing

2015-10-22 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Chris, that wasn't rude at all. That is a valid question. A question that I
don't know the answer to, but a friend of mine said that companies don't like
giving refunds if they can fix issues. We'll just have to wait and see. They're
from Scotland so I'll know if they'll give me a refund or not tomorrow.

Re: These Simple Facebook Shortcuts Will Save You Time

2015-10-22 Thread David Griffith
I have not gone to the website but if the keyboard shortcuts are reliant on
using the VO keys, that is, control and option then there will most definitely
be a conflict with Voiceover under Yosemite and earlier. control option and
numbers are the keystrokes used for hot spot management.

However a workaround for El Capitan users may be to redesignate the Voiceover
key as Caps lock and turn off Control option as VO keys. I am sticking with
Yosemite for the time being so cannot test this.

It’s hopeless. The muting is still happening under pressure, and so is the
activity-fails-to-switch bug.

ARGH!

Bug report finger at the ready for the next incoming arrow of misfortune, but I
wonder what Apple think they have fixed in this release, then. It’s not right
that people see fixes to VO in the release notes when they clearly haven’t
fixed anything!

Or, I don’t know, I could just quit. It’s all very frustrating. Stop me if

that the number of people I interact with is less than miniscule but it is an
indication of something, I dare say.

The truth is, again in my opinion, when used correctly, the standard view is
unbeatable. Again, just my opinion.

Cereproc And El Capitan, Very Disappointing

2015-10-22 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi all. Well I'm not a really happy camper. This will probably solidify the
points that Sabahattin stated about these voices a few months ago, but anyway,
I'm in contact with a guy from Cereproc named Graham Leary. Since El Capitan is
no longer in beta, I was able to tell him my issues that I've been having with
these voices and asked if there was an update to them. He said that there was,
and since I purchased an upgrade and support for a voice for a year, I was able
to update one of them, Nathan. Anyway I updated Nathan thinking that the issue
would be fixed. Sadly though, it wasn't, and the voice is still unusable with
Voiceover. He'll say his name when I select him in the speech rotor but that's
it. I kinda feel like a chump now because I wasted 17 pounds 99 which
translates into $35 Canadian thinking that the issue would be fixed. So I told
Graham to either fix the issues or give me my money back. I hope they'll at
least fix the issue because I highly doubt they'll give me a refund. So as
Sabahattin stated, stick to either the Apple voices, Nuance or Acapela, and
from my personal experience, don't buy from a TTS company that makes you buy
upgrades to every voice.

Mark on iOS 9.1, So Far

2015-10-22 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Well, last night, I finally installed iOS 9.1 on my 6 Plus.

For me, there are no proverbial show-stoppers.

1.
However, given that I have been in an ongoing dialog with Apple engineers, I
am a little disappointed that the camera app zoom VoiceOver bug still
persist. However, on a positive note, at least, enabling VoiceOver, after
zooming in on an image, no longer cancels the zoom. Baby steps, eh?
(smile).

2.
I am surprised at how much I miss having the time announced when waking the
phone.

3.
Perhaps it's just me but I swear the quality of Samantha has been greatly
degraded in this version. I just don't understand why, with every major
release since iOS 6.x, the quality of Samantha has been steadily declining.
Of course, this is just my opinion. What I do find interesting is that
Samantha's pronunciation of words that were absolutely correct in iOS 8, has
been changed and are now incorrect in iOS 9.1.

In iOS 8.x, I found the high quality version of the Samantha voice somewhat
pleasant, in iOS 9.x, I find it unsettling, to say the least. I cannot
imagine having the current Samantha voice reading long stretches of texts,
whereas in the previous iOS, this would not have even been at issue. Is
Apple trying to force everyone to Alex? (Yes, a conspiracy theory).
(Smile).

4.
Also, the SMS Reply To dictation feedback problem is very, very annoying.

For those who disagree, let me say that I respect your opinion. Also, the
feedback is not much of a problem if one dictates using either a Bluetooth
or wired headset. I suppose it is not much of an issue if one only dictates
1 or 2 words. However, if one attempts to dictate a full sentence, then the
feedback becomes problematic as a kind of feedback loop ensues causing a
great deal of random text to be inserted as Siri, hearing VoiceOver, begins
to dictate to itself.

5.
I know this comes up every time a new OS is released but it seems to me as
though my battery drains faster since updating from 8.x to 9.1. I just
turned off a lot of items that were active in the background app refresh
area so I'll see how it goes. However, I can tell you that I updated a
total of three 6 plus phones, yesterday, two from iOS 9.0.2. Now, even
though both of those two phones that were already running 9.x, were plugged
into an outlet at the time of the update, via OTA, both had less charge
after updating than they did, before the update began. I've never seen such
a thing before.

6.
As always, I have sent my findings to Apple.

7.
Finally, and I want to be clear on this: Updating the OS OTA (over-the-air)
is in no way the same as installing it from iTunes via a USB cable. For
whatever reason, there does seem to be a pattern of more problems when going
from iOS 8.x to 9.x via OTA.

What is the difference between the OTA method and the iTunes method? In
short, updating OTA does not rewrite the file allocation table and file
structures, just for starters. When you update via iTunes, it is as if you
are doing a fresh install as all of the file tables and data clusters are
actually rewritten to the disk..

Want proof of this? No problem, here's how to verify the difference. When
you use the OTA method, you will notice that any custom keyboard shortcuts
you may have added remain, after the update. However, when you update via
iTunes, you will discover that only default keyboard shortcuts exist,
meaning you will have to rewrite your custom keyboard shortcuts.

I wish I could lay claim to having learned about the difference between the
two methods, independently but I was told of the difference by a senior
Apple iOS design engineer.

I'll be honest, I have not used the iTunes method since the OTA option
became available but now that I have had several of my recent syncing
problems resolved after having used the iTunes method, I'll probably use it
from now on, when possible.

Re: El capitan installation disk does not work.

2015-10-22 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
OK. Use Disk Utility to erase the disk first, and try one more time. If
DiskMakerX will not do it, then it’s really no hardship to use the
“CreateInstallMedia” tool that comes with the app you downloaded from the Mac
App Store. Go to the MAS and make sure the button for download on the product
page is dimmed, indicating it’s installed. We assume your erased volume is
called “Untitled”. Now run (you can copy and paste the whole command into
Terminal):

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\
Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia —volume /Volumes/Untitled
—applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/

Type in your password, if prompted. Answer affirmatively to the prompt that
you are erasing the target device. Read the responses, until “Done” appears,
with no preceding error. Close the Terminal Window and quit Terminal. You
should now have an installer drive.

Re: From Yosemite to El Capitan and Back: One New User's Story

2015-10-22 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Well visually it’s completely different, essentially like on iOS with each
entire message's detail displayed in a group format with a resizable view of
the content to the right, instead of displaying the message detail in a table
format at the top and the message text for the selected message beneath the
splitter. For us VoiceOver users what that translates to is a slight
difference in the way the message content is announced, but for the modern
view, the loss of convenient table navigation functionality—no means, for
example, to easily skim a particular header, such as subject fields, or use the
standard table sorting and arranging capabilities (which, incidentally, seem to
be broken on El Capitan).

Especially where the Mac Mail application is concerned. I would argue that
Mail is as good as it has ever been. I have said it before and I'll say it

Hello, everyone.

little tale about my brief experience upgrading to El Capitan. I do
this for two reasons: to acquaint new users thinking of upgrading with
one rookie's experience and perhaps to generate a bit of commentary
from more experienced users.

As someone who has come up through the ranks of CP/M, MS-DOS, Windows,
and Apple iOS, I am no newcomer to the world of computers. In July, I
bought a MacBook Air, which came with Yosemite 10.10.3, which I
upgraded to 10.10.5 in early September. I love reading documentation,
so I threw myself happily into reading lots of VoiceOver and OS X
resources, including Tim Sniffen's and Janet Ingber's books, AppleVis
posts, and various podcasts, supplemented by generous chunks of David
Pogue's _Yosemite: the Missing Manual_. The learning curve was steep,
but I almost enjoyed my first few weeks. Troubled by some bugs,
notably in Mac Mail, I wondered if I should upgrade to El Capitan.
Years and years of caution prompted my inner voice to urge me to stay
put and be patient as I learned; but one day in October, I took the
plunge. Buoyed by my success at upgrading, I started to play with El
Capitan only to discover within a few minutes that not only were the
Mail bugs still present but also Safari often displayed a "busy"
status at times when performing the same operations in Yosemite
produced happier results.

I decided to return to Yosemite 10.10.5, so, urged on by an Apple
Accessibility rep who told me I could downgrade without a bootable
drive, I decided to use Internet Recovery to restore the OS that came
with the machine. Something went wrong during the attempt to
downgrade, and the Mac refused to acknowledge my router. A couple of
earnest attempts by Apple Accessibility personnel to help the machine
recover failed, and I decided to take the computer into the nearby
Apple Store for a clean install. The bottom line is that the machine
has been restored to its Day One state, so to speak, and I am quite
content to wallow in Yosemite for the time being.

My point is simple: if you're new to this game, consider carefully
whether the advantages you may gain when trying to upgrade are worth
the risk. Better to learn carefully what you don't know now than to
add more layers which you may not have bargained for.

Some of you might be wondering why you have bothered to read something
so self-evident. All I can say is temptation doesn't always yield
beneficial results. At the risk of stating the obvious, I have stated
the obvious.

2015-10-22 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Nope, still completely borked for me. Can do it with QuickNav off, but as soon
as VO navigation commands get involved it’s all FUBAR. VO-right, for example,
will skim me suddenly from the very start to the very end, and word-by-word
navigation simply doesn’t work. If it’s working for others it must be either
that they’re very lucky or they haven’t done something to their configurations
which I have.

  Hi All,

I would like to know, if there are equivalent commands like in windows for
the below?

home: places someone at the beginning of the line
end: places someone at the end of a line
ctrl+home: puts you at the top of the file
ctrl+end: puts you at the end of the file

I am in eclipse’s code editor, but I think what I am looking for can work
anywhere there is a text area, like text edit.

I don't know what you're friend is talking about. I have a 6S, not the

Hi all,

I'm thinking of upgrading my phone from the 5c. I'm considering anything
from the 5s to the 6 to the 6s. I am not interested in the plus series. A
friend has told me not to get the 6s because the battery life sucks. I would
like to hear any experiences that people on this list have had with the 6s
series of phones in relation to battery life.

Thanks,

The bugs you mentioned were solved in 10.11.1 or so my experience so far has
seemed to indicate. Definitely safari is working better and I never had mail
issues but I don’t use the classic view. Either way, mail is functioning
nicely under 10.11.1 on this side anyway.

Re: El capitan installation disk does not work.

2015-10-22 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
That's the thing. It wouldn't let me create it. It crashed about 3 fourths
the way through creating it. I don't remember the wording of the error, but
it was something to the effect of an unknown exception error occured. It
honestly wasn't very specific. Yeah, the drive definitely was compatible,
as I've created other OSX discs on it before. And yes, the drive has more
than plenty the capassity. I think it was a 32GB drive, if I'm not
mistaking.

Can you confirm that you are in fact booting the installer? Check that the
volume in Finder shows the Install OS X El Capitan application. If it does,
then you probably have a bootable disk, but it won’t hurt to recreate it as
a last resort. Better if you can avoid DiskMakerX and use the command line,
but if not, just give it another try.

From Yosemite to El Capitan and Back: One New User's Story

2015-10-22 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, everyone.

As a MacBook Air user of just under three months, I am posting a
little tale about my brief experience upgrading to El Capitan. I do
this for two reasons: to acquaint new users thinking of upgrading with
one rookie's experience and perhaps to generate a bit of commentary
from more experienced users.

Craig

There really isn’t a change log as such, merely the release notes for the
update that is presented on upgrade. You can find a copy of those here:

Re: What's the word with the update for El Capitan and VO

2015-10-22 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
My opinion is that unless you have a specific reason to move to El Capitan,
staying put will give you the better experience. At this stage I’d say the El
Capitan experience is merely tolerable, but not great. Responsiveness is a
definite plus, and I have come to endure iBooks for sheer lack of choice and
find that I’m glad not to have to remove it every time I update. But other
than that, it’s a bit meh, really.

Hi Gabe, your friend is on the crack pipe, the battery life in the 6s and 6s+
is better than the 6 and 6+ I would say by about 10 to 20% or so.

Also, I would encourage you to reconsider the plus option. The extra real
estate is nice for people with larger hands like myself and also there’s real
optical stabilization of images instead of digital stabilization which can work
a bit better for character recognition. (I’m willing to be corrected on that
this is what I have heard)
The 6S+ and 6S have far better cellular radios and work fantastically
on the network as well as great WiFi support and the new processor makes things
pop. I would go 6S+ if I were you but if you still don’t want the + definitely
6S.

Hope that helps.
