Re: Windows 10 push

2015-10-31 Thread E.T.
I didn't actually get upgraded. I got annoyed when Windows Update
appeared to be stuck with this. So googled it.

First, Microsoft sneaked it in a couple months ago as an optional
item with the name Update for Windows 7 and a kb number. This installs
the gwx aoolet which waits for you to press that button on the update
page. Until you do, you cannot check for other updates.

Here is a link to what I found today about what is expected next year.

Maybe by that time I will wean myself off Windows completely and
uninstall Bootcamp.

Hello E.T.,

I am so sorry you experienced that. It must have been extremely frustrating.

All I can say is that no one with whom I interact, locally, has been forced to

While I am a huge fan of Windows 10, generally speaking, I recommend upgrading
only to those running Windows 8.x.

I strongly suspect, and this is only a supposition on my part, that you had
some kind of nefarious app forcing you to upgrade.

That is to say, a colleague of a friend of mine in Texas, experienced a similar
phenomenon; as it turned out, her copy of Windows had been compromised. I do
not know if she was running Windows on a Boot Camp partition or not but I do
recall that the problem did not stem from the native Windows OS.

Can you imagine how the world would react were Microsoft to force people to
upgrade?

Let me put it like this. While that is probably true, Microsoft infected
my Windows installation on the Mac by trying to get me to let them put Windows
10 on it. I could not in any way get past it and could not get other Windows
updates. I do not know what their game is, why they cannot let people decide.

How is Bootcamp handling this?

Bizarre observation with screen saver

2015-10-31 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Guys,

This is about to drive me up the wall! I have a macbook running 10.11.1 El
Capitan. I have gone into the energy saver preferences and have made sure to
tell the mac not to ever go to sleep, and have also set the screen not to dim
on AC, nor on battery, etc. Some of you may say that was really stupid a me!
That's a real good way to ruin my mac quickly. I'm not here to argue that one
way or another. My point is, I also have gone under the desktop and screen
saver settings, and have set the screen saver to never activate. The weird
thing is, after about 30 minutes of no activity, it still keeps coming on. Try
as I may I can't get the stupid thing to deactivate! I've checked every single
setting that I know under the sun to look at. Everything appears to be set
correctly. My other macbook which also is running El Capitan 10.11.1 is not
having this problem that I can tell. Neither is my mac mini. OK, granted, the
mini is not on 10.11. It's only on Yosemite 10.10.5, but, still.

Does anyone know what the heck might be going on here? This is about to make
me scream! Which I guess, wouldn't be such a bad thing, considerring what day
it is. LOL! Just kidding. Seriously though, any ideas?

Chris.

Not for me, no problems here. Just go to Settings and change the rate to your
desire.
Mine has been set to 40 percent and stays that way.
Maybe the trick is to change it before start scanning.

Re: Calibrating The iPhone Battery

2015-10-31 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
The battery doesn’t need calibrating; sensors in the battery never allow them
to overcharge. The reason you want to run the discharge/recharge routine is
simply that the battery gauge, which measures the output power of the battery
in order to determine its level and times the progressive discharging to
estimate the amount of charge remaining, can be misled by various conditions.
This is especially noticeable if you’ve recently had a new battery installed,
but it also happens as a result of external factors like temperature or
software factors like sudden changes in demand on the battery that lead to
meaningless or corrupted timing estimations. And, although I’d argue that
recalibration is up there on the same scale as resetting the PRAM for
effectiveness, there’s no doubt that it can be helpful; I only recently had to
recalibrate the gauge in my BrailleNote Apex after replacing its battery.
Lithium-ion, since you asked.

Re: How To Backup Your Third-Party VoiceOver Accessible iOS 9.x Apps

2015-10-31 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello Mark,

The bigger picture would be that more and more apps will become broken if we
don’t speak out. Primarily if should upgrades brake accessibility then you
should get a note to the developers You should also leave a review and rating
so that other members of the blind community don’t waste their money.

On my devices, airplay only shows when an available airplay device is in range,
or if bluetooth, is paired with the device.

Re: Does music purchased on iTunes store on the phone automatically go to my mac?

2015-10-31 Thread David Chittenden
You can set iTunes on the Mac to automatically download any songs, apps, or
movies which are purchased through iTunes / app store on the iOS device. I do
not currently have my Mac running, so cannot provide instructions at present.

Re: Airplane gone from the control center on my iPhone 6s

2015-10-31 Thread Mary Otten
I have several airplay enabled devices. I have a stereo upstairs with an
airport express and the stereo downstairs with the same. We also have a second
generation Apple TV. So there are plenty of devices to pick from. Maybe having
to have a Bluetooth earpiece connected is the solution, but that is really
really stupid. And why would it not require that on the iPad? Why would the
iPhone be different from an iPad running the same OS?

iPhone airplay problem solved

2015-10-31 Thread Mary Otten
Well, one of the things you have to do when you send out a message to several
lists with a problem is send out your solution, even though it makes you look
really, really stupid. I figured out the problem to my disappearing airplay,
thanks to a comment from someone on one of these lists that mentioned that her
airplay disappeared if she did not have her Bluetooth device connected.
I connected a Bluetooth speaker I have and found an airplay came back. When I
went into airplay, I discovered that none of my airport expresses was listed,
which seemed strange. The reason for that was that my phone happened to have
been connected to the other wireless network in this house. We have two. And my
phone was on the one where the airport expresses or not. So of course, it
didn't see them. I will be deleting that particular network from the phones
network settings. Oh brother!

All in one printer/scanner/copier

2015-10-31 Thread Jim Gatteys
Hi all!
I guess the subject says it all but I am in the market for a new black and
white laser printer and was wondering about getting one of those all in one
printer/scanner/copier beasts. My scanner is 15 years old it is an epson 1660
and I just wondered if anybody had experience with one of these all in ones.
Also, what about accessibility with mac drivers? I guess wireless would be
nice so it would work from either mac or iPhone.
I'd appreciate any info or experience out there.
Jim

Re: All in one printer/scanner/copier

2015-10-31 Thread Scott Berry
Hi Jim,

I suggest that you may want to go with the Epson printers. They now have one
which handles ink cartridges for two years. I have a Workforce 2530 and once
you learn the buttons it’s not bad but entering in the wireless you almost need
someone sighted. I am uncertain what printers are really easy to use. I have
a friend in Minnesota I’ll ask him if he is not on here and see what he
recommends.

Clearly, that was someone who knows nothing about computers. There are always
bugs, and there are still irritating ones in El Capitán. I would ask that Apple
Accessibility person to try working with Pages or Numbers and then say that all
the bugs are fixed.

Re: How To Backup Your Third-Party VoiceOver Accessible iOS 9.x Apps

2015-10-31 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
To be honest, I appreciate the new mode of working. And, since getting refunds
has been getting harder and harder, I’m restraining my impulse purchases
accordingly. Since you can only get apps from Apple, make Apple do the work of
maintaining your preferred list of apps; hide any purchase you no longer need
in iTunes from your purchases list. Now you can use the App Store from the
device, and only the device, to get your apps; delete any app stored on your
computer, turn off app downloads on iTunes, and simply never buy anything that
isn’t confirmed accessible or from a vendor who cares about accessibility.
That will have to do, until Apple steps up to the plate and delivers a genuine
commitment to VoiceOver users for apps downloaded from the store. And you’ll
spend less money too, as well as being thoroughly liberated from all that
syncing bollocks.

I don't know about fixing *all!* of them, I think that's a pretty bold thing
for them to say. there's always, be it accessibility or not, room for
improvement. No OS is perfect in any fassion. That said, I will agree that
a *lot!* of bugs have been fixed, or so it seems.

Having said this, my recommendation still stands: stay put. There are
bugs that are well-known, which have been reported to Apple (and I know
because I’ve done it) and which have simply not been fixed. That
includes activities, hotspots and Safari text editing. And I’m
absolutely not at liberty to say that, alas, even the latest beta (which
you should be running, if you can) is not immune, although thank goodness
it does appear the fixes are coming for some of the reported issues so
somebody is actually listening.

My MacBook Pro, which is my secondary machine on which I do all my
experimenting while I’m home, now has Windows 8.1 on it as its only OS.
I am saving up for the latest upgrades to all my Windows screen readers.
The end days are almost upon us. :)

Re: ICloud Photos?

2015-10-31 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Use the Photos app on OS X. When you’re signed in to iCloud and have set the
preference to use iCloud Photo Library, it’ll show up in your Photos album
after you’ve initially set it up and synced. You can also use Photos itself to
turn on iCloud Photos. It should appear under at least “All Photos”.

I have certainly used the Zeppelin Air but may be not the one you speak of.

Very easy to download the Control app from the app store and install the
Zeppelin Air by following the onscreen instructions. I will have a look
at this new product as I loved the airplay speaker.

Many thanks.

Re: How To Backup Your Third-Party VoiceOver Accessible iOS 9.x Apps

2015-10-31 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Oh yes, forgot to say: I do pity the bandwidth-conscious. This change sucks
for them. But if you are updating multiple devices on the same network, then
the Caching Service built into OS X Server can really help with that. Sadly
this service refuses to function over Wi-Fi, so the fairly common scenario of a
tethered iPhone, or an iPhone running through a mobile access point shared with
a Mac, will not work. :(

Having said this, my recommendation still stands: stay put. There are bugs that
are well-known, which have been reported to Apple (and I know because I’ve done
it) and which have simply not been fixed. That includes activities, hotspots
and Safari text editing. And I’m absolutely not at liberty to say that, alas,
even the latest beta (which you should be running, if you can) is not immune,
although thank goodness it does appear the fixes are coming for some of the
reported issues so somebody is actually listening.

My MacBook Pro, which is my secondary machine on which I do all my
experimenting while I’m home, now has Windows 8.1 on it as its only OS. I am
saving up for the latest upgrades to all my Windows screen readers. The end

Use the Photos app on OS X. When you’re signed in to iCloud and have set
the preference to use iCloud Photo Library, it’ll show up in your Photos
album after you’ve initially set it up and synced. You can also use Photos
itself to turn on iCloud Photos. It should appear under at least “All
Photos”.

Windows 10 push

2015-10-31 Thread E.T.
Some of you may have put Windows 10 on your Macs under Bootcamp. I
am curious if there were major issues going from Windows 7.

I am asking because Microsoft is going to make this happen one way

the first stage last month pushing this upgrade via Windows Update.

If you have a track pad, like I have on my Mac Book Pro, you can start reading

or tap control again to start it up. It will only start again if you just
pause and don’t do something or go somewhere else on the computer.

RE: Windows 10 push

2015-10-31 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Shawn,

I certainly do not wish to contradict E. T. as he may have access to more
recently updated information than I.

However, as far as I know, Windows 7 will be supported until the year 2020.

To date, there is no mandatory update to Windows 10.

In fact, I am writing this reply on a Windows 7 PC which, being an Enterprise
version, does not even display the Windows 10 notification badge.

I am also running a Windows 8.1 home Premium computer which, while displaying
the option to upgrade to Windows 10, in no way warns that the option to do this
will be taken away.

Without going into greater detail, for those using a Home version of Windows
10, the ability to opt out of important updates and, in some cases, new feature
ad-ons, no longer exists.

Again, this is merely my understanding and I am certainly no authority on
Microsoft so I welcome any corrections to my comments.

Mark

RE: Windows 10 push

2015-10-31 Thread M. Taylor
Hello E.T.,

I am so sorry you experienced that. It must have been extremely frustrating.

All I can say is that no one with whom I interact, locally, has been forced to
upgrade to Windows 10.

While that is probably true, Microsoft infected my
Windows installation on the Mac by trying to get me to let them put Windows 10
on it. I could not in any way get past it and could not get other Windows
updates. I do not know what their game is, why they cannot let people decide.
