Re: Accessible web conferencing: zoom.us

2017-04-20 Thread Scott Granados
You know I don’t even think the consumer issue is as deep as you say. I don’t
think most people care not because of anything other than most are totally
unaware of what’s going on around them and sort of fall to the lowest common
denominator. For example, I used to work as a recording engineer in a previous
career. The studio I primarily worked in had a very nice monitoring
environment with very high end speakers and signal path etc. However, when we
did our final mixes we not only used the high end in room monitors but we’d
bring in and attach these real cheesy Radio Shack Minimus 7 garbage speakers
that were something like $100 per pair. We’d get the mix to sound good on
these because 99% of the consuming public had crap quality playback equipment
like the cheese ball book shelf systems etc. Another thing we did was use a
low power stereo FM transmitter and sit in a car listening to the recording on
the in car audio and then call in to the control room to have a guy left behind
make the changes. This way we mixed to where most people listen to music, in
their cars commuting. The point is I don’t think the majority of people care
about sound quality. Your example of MP3 is a great one. I understand the
need for heavy compression and data games at first when memory was a premium
but now that storage is approaching 0 in cost that compression should in my
opinion go away. With the storage and bandwidth available ubiquitously now
there’s no reason for lossy compression. But I’m in the minority because I
care about my sound quality. Most do not.

Re: Accessible web conferencing: zoom.us

2017-04-20 Thread Michael Babcock, Host of the Your Own Pay Podcast
Cara:
I’ve forwarded this message on to zoom.
supp...@zoom.us
This is in hopes that they reply and we can find a positive resolution to the
issues users are facing with it.
Everyone’s use case scenario is different, for example I schedule my meetings
and webinars on my account page in Safari.
(Sign into the account you want to schedule a meeting in and go to:
https://zoom.us/meeting/schedule
)
The way to get around the date issue on this page is to press your voiceover
keys plus Space Key on the date, use table navigation to jump to the table,
select the date within the table, , interact with the sell, press vo+Space, and
then type in the time in the edit box,
NOTE: after you select the date, (available dates are links, unavailable dates
are just numbers), voiceover automatically stops interacting with the table.
Focus for me is then brought back to the top of the page, so I typed find for
the number of the day I selected, which jumps focus back to the date. I press
tab and you can then select the time by typing it into the edit box.
E.G. 10:24
When you press tab again your asked to select"a.m., or p.m.", if you press VO
Left once, you'll hear either option selected, and this is a link. Selecting
this link will place voiceover in a edit box, press voiceover right arrow to
select which option you would like the meeting to be scheduled for.
The timezone selection is the same way FYI.
I don't know if you can view your meetings from the zoom application on either
Mac OS or iOS, I live out of Google calendar so my links I need to attend our
either in the event or there in my email notification that comes 10 minutes
before the time I need to be there.
However, I have seen the focus issues with the chat window, most especially in
a presentation I gave yesterday showing other users how to use zoom.
Additionally I've also seen at focus issues in the members list, for example
voiceover doesn't seem to keep focused on the list of members and if you're
trying to quickly switch between members list and chat Focus tends to become
lost. I don't know how to explain it…

I've also explained how individuals viewing a webinar or attending a meeting
cannot interact with the pole feature at least on the Mac, and hosts on the Mac
cannot either interact with the pole or read the results live in a previous
communication with zoom, so am hopeful that they look into this.

I do not know how accessible the reports are, I'll be testing those over the
next couple of weeks as I'm hosting some webinars for a few clients.
Additionally, as noted in this message I forwarded, I also have found pressing
the broadcast button when a webinar is in test only mode, seems to be
impossible with voiceover on the Mac. How I've gotten around this is to set my
iPhone as a alternative host, and then press the broadcast button from it.
Now I will say as outlined in this video I recorded it on YouTube:Accessible
webinar software for the blind
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJXzEYfG8NM

That accessibility has changed from one update to another, so be sure that you
are running the latest update of zoom just to verify that some of the mentioned
things you brought up are not remedied.
"Good Day:

As I know it’s likely your team doesn’t monitor forms like the one below, I
thought I should send this to you and give it to your team for feedback.
I’ve seen this type of behavior when trying to use the “broadcast”button on the
Mac with zoom for webinars, as Voiceover doesn’t ever allow me to press it.
I suggest someone form your team subscribe to this form and to

To acquire feedback from the users of your platform who are using it on a daily

Hoping this finds you all well.

2017-04-20 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi,
Great post, John!!

Just to kind of back on what John has already written, you can do lots and
lots with word press and the many many plug ins that you can choose from. If
you aren’t afraid to get your hands dirty, you can learn to do all this
yourself(yes, there might be a learning curve), and this might cost less in the
long run then hiring a consultant. Word press does have plug ins and themes
for store fronts, if that’s where your interest lies. I do all my own web site
stuff, and if I need work on graphics, logos, etc, I outsource that with a
couple of different free lancer sites on the ‘net for quite reasonable prices.
As far as the web hosting company, like I said before, mine is dream host, and
I pay around $10/month for my site. You also need a domain, and this will
depend on the particular one or ones you want as far as registration fees, etc.
Sometimes, you can get sales on the name you’d like, etc. If I remember
correctly, it cost me around $12 to register my first domain, and I just got
another one last month on sale for $2. You have to renew those either yearly
or every couple of years, depending on where you bought them and their terms,
etc.

I am not an expert, by any means, but if you want to email me privately about
this web site stuff, please feel free. My eamil is caitlyn.furn...@gmail.com
, and my site is at www.caitlynfurness.com
, just so you can see what I’ve managed to do
all on my own with just some reading of tutorials, hints from various people,
and using word press and spending some time with it.

HTH,
Caitlyn

I avoid the Mac version all together. I can’t speak to the screen sharing, but
everything else you mentioned, is completely accessible within the IOS app.
Scheduling a meeting, adding participants, and even adding it to your calendar.

Re: wordpress VoiceOver content management solutions

2017-04-20 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Chuck,

I think you need to decide on your goals. Nothing about CMS needs to be
associated with facebook unless you want it to. Generally, I think of CMS as
being a master electronic management system it is essential for large
organizations since they will have multiple people adding to the web site, and
need to force controls like standard look accessibility and peer review.

If you will be the maintaining of most of the imformation, then I suggest you
start simple and expand as necessary. It is better to have a good structure of
a small amount of information then a web site that was designed for 10,000
pages but only has three with relevant information.

As an owner of copyrighted material that you might be distributing, having a
good store front to find and purchase securely that copyrighted material might
be essential for you. Certainly listen to your consultant, but your consultant
will want to have you paying a regular fee for his services, this is great if
you need regular updates in style and function, but if you are putting out a
electronic business card with maybe a monthly update on services, then make
sure you aren't spending too much on the consultant. WordPress has themes out
of the box that are accessible, and I believe they have some kind of badge to
indicate what is accessible.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: Accessible web conferencing: zoom.us

2017-04-20 Thread Cara Quinn
Karen and All,

I have also been using Zoom with a corporate account pretty much every day for
about a year now but unlike everyone else posting here so far, I have
encountered a number of really bothersome accessibility issues.

So I am wondering if you or someone else in this thread may be able to tell me
what the heck I am doing wrong! lol!

Firstly, in scheduling a meeting on the Mac, choosing a date causes VO to get
stuck in the date area.

Once I figured out that I needed to interact with the date again, I was not
able to hear which field I was editing with up and down arrows. More
accurately, I can hear the items which are changing but once I have selected an
item and use the left or right arrows to move to the next item, no time or date
elements are announced until I start using up or down arrows to edit them.

So I basically need to just guess at which time or date element I am editing at
any given moment.

this is further complicated by the fact that once I am done editing the time
and date, Voiceover still seems to be stuck in the date area and it is only by
luck that I am able to get out of this area and not change anything I have just
set.

Once I get through that horror show, then I need to be careful when moving
through the rest of the scheduling window so as not to accidentally get caught
in the date area again.

So finally, once I have scheduled the meeting successfully, I then go to my
meetings tab and am greeted with a grid of unknown cells which I then need to
interact with to see which contains my scheduled meeting. Once I do that, there
is no obvious way to add participants to it.

If I click on the Contacts tab to access my company contacts I find a really
funky table that seems to cause Voiceover to keep jumping in the list of people
as if the list is constantly refreshing.

Once I am able to select a person, I am placed into what looks like a chat
window and again, Voiceover gets stuck in this window. I.E. I can press Escape
to get out of the chat window but as soon as Voiceover moves out of the window
its focus is immediately brought back into the chat window again.

This insanity also sometimes happens when I am just moving through the table
trying to locate a person. I.E. I will be looking for someone and suddenly I
will just end up in a chat window with a random person I am passing by in the
constantly refreshing list of contacts.

I am assuming this list keeps refreshing to keep up with coworkers statuses and
such but for God’s sake, there needs to be a way to turn this off. lol!

Needless to say this is all just hellishly annoying to say the least when I
just want / need to get work done. So I am really curious at what others’ are
doing to make this app usable.

I have not even gotten into the squirreliness on the iOS client or the window
juggling I seem to need to do when hosting a live meeting or presentation on
the Mac where I need to do screen sharing. It’s all just a bit much for me. :)
-And certainly is not ready to be called accessible at a corporate level in my
opinion.

So for me personally, calling this accessible is really kind of a stretch. It’s
sort of usable but not what I would consider accessible or at all enjoyable. :)

Just my opinion of course and as I say, I am more than excited to hear others’
feedback if it can help me tame this beastie! lol!

thanks bunches All and do have a lovely evening / morning / day, wherever you
may be on this little blue-green ball of ours.

Cheers!

Re: Accessible web conferencing: zoom.us

2017-04-20 Thread Karen Lewellen
well, given there is no more uniformity in appreciating sound then there
is a uniform sighted verses blind people concept at all, I would say
certainly some do.
What tends to happen with consumers in general is that they think it is
supposed to be that bad because they hear it everywhere. MP3 content can
be the same, with a desire for better sound feeding the return of lp
records.
Companies and individuals who take their communication seriously either
use different services, instant teleconference for example, or run the
sound through a proper filter.
Not everyone calls in on the same sort of device, and I have yet to be at a
zoom event where the presenter tried taking questions, or doing more than
the captive audience thing.
Still this has nothing to do with the nonexistent two sides of a coin concept
of sight or its absence.

I haven't tried the service at all, and am going off only what I read on their
website and in the article that pointed me to them in the first place. However,
things look good. If you're in need of this kine of service and you try Zoom,
I'd love to hear what you thought of the experience.

I haven't been following the Citrix thread, so I apologize if this was already
brought up over there.

I was really hoping the iPad would work. That said, I am glad they are giving
me the local access laptop. The desktop computers are rather underpowered. They
merely connect to the company's intranet through the internet, using secure
servers. They are very slow to load the worker's desktop when one logs in. They
have very little internal memory or storage, which is why the laptop is
provided (the office desktop cannot support Jaws.

Re: wordpress VoiceOver content management solutions

2017-04-20 Thread CHUCK REICHEL
Hi Caitlyn,
Thanks for the info.
May be this will clarify what I'm trying to do after some one builds my new
site.

Heres what this guy james D who wants to build my new site said, in regards
to building my new site;
"You first have to think of a wordpress (or any other CMS site) has two
separate "post types", a "page" and a "post", in it's simplest form.

A page is where you have your static content (but can be editable) and the
"posts" are for "blogging, providing updates, or anything else you may want to
post and allow commenting.

Now, I recommend for you is if you are familiar with using Facebook to post
things, then use a plugin to import the FB posts into the site. There are a
couple Premium plugins that will do this well by making "individual posts" to
your site instead of just a "feed wall" from your facebook account.

Now if you don't mind using the website to post things there are plugins that
do the reverse but I am not sure as to the extent.

Take note, some of these plugins, depending on "free" version functions, may
need a premium version to attain exactly want you may want for any given task.

If you are active on Facebook I recommend the first scenario as the world goes
to FB and the communication is faster and instant considering emails from your
server and no live chat etc..

Everything else is template choice, layout and design, artwork, content and
time.
If you would like me to go forward with your site, then I could either charge
an hourly rate or a flat price, however the flat price does have it's "time
allotted restraints, like block rates for studios. On average I charge a
minimum $30 an hour for a site build with at least a $120.00 non-refundable
deposit to cover the first 4 hours of time. An average site, with content
provided, usually takes 15-20hrs depending on your approval of the finished
product. If I have to create logos, etc., etc., then it could run up to
40-50hrs because of the back and forth of approvals and time making changes.
Artwork is alway a subjective thing to the beholder."
I personally am not a web site builder, I just don't have the time.
What I'm talking about is using VoiceOver to do the "content management" after
some one builds the initial site.
Thats why I was asking about the options to do this.
How much does dream host charge for your site hosting?
My business just happens to be an audio recording studio and yes we do voice
overs to. :)
Thanks
Chuck

Re: Accessible web conferencing: zoom.us

2017-04-20 Thread Scott Granados
Cait, yes they do. I worked for a long time for Fidelity Investments where we
built a custom video and audio conferencing system. It replaced the one
Verizon offers. We actually took great care to have good quality audio along
with fantastic video. We supported from standard definition video up to 4K 30
FPS non drop and on the audio side everything was G722 wide band so you’d get
audio quality better than Skype calls in most settings. On the phone side we
supported G711 and G722 which means you either got something as good as a
standard phone call or if your phone supported it like many cell phones do we
would go wide band so again you’d get that nice crisp full audio.
The users liked it so much they scrapped the audio only conferencing
service and before we knew it we had 5+ million minutes of business per week.
We’d support thousands of parallel calls and were able to maintain crisp audio
so the other guys can if they want to expend the effort and use the extra
bandwidth.

Re: wordpress VoiceOver content management solutions

2017-04-20 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi chuck,

I am using word press on a self hosted site with little to no problems. I
actually quite like it.

As for some of the things you are asking, it’s not clear to me what you are
after, from the way you are wording things. I am not aware that you can
actually use Facebook, for example, as a CMS. I don’t know what you are
talking about with the sound engineer stuff, as I am not in that field-are you
talking about using voiceover on the mac, or doing voiceovers as in the
production of things, like commercials, etc?

anyway, I hope this helped just a little!!

Caitlyn
ps-there are many many solutions for web hosting. The most cost effective will
vary, depending on your budget and what you want and need. I personally use
dream host and love them, but there are many others which are equally as good.

Re: Sitrix access

2017-04-20 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
The only real JAWS security snag I ran into was a particular
anti-keylogger package which tagged JAWS as something which steals
keystrokes - which it kind of does. End result was that JAWS couldn't
get any keystrokes and so Windows became inaccessible. Had to uninstall
the anti-keylogger service to fix things and they still haven't figured
out a solution.

That’s such a bogus reason not to install JFW. Especially when you
can deploy it so it only runs for the specific users required. All
that is I think is an IT department to lazy to do their jobs. People
bitch about jaws or voice over and security in the mean time
demanding that their favorite messenger or media player is installed
that really does have security concerns. (I’m sorry we can’t install
JFW for you oh and get ready we’re pushing out a new Java virtual
machine). Right!
Not a bad work around though. The only problem is having to run
windows, that would be a deal breaker for me.

with me for work. Now, back to Windows 7 after 6 years of Mac and

Re: Accessible web conferencing: zoom.us

2017-04-20 Thread Karen Lewellen
I will add that zoom allows you to give participant's a call in number
instead, a fine option for those ho prefer attending without video at
all.
Granted as is often the case when the audio is video based, the quality is
sort of nose crinkle worthy, but at least the door for phone alone is
there.

I saw on Twitter yesterday that a new web conferencing service was discovered recently:
www.zoom.us . The big news here is that they have an accessibility

accessible. They claim compatibility with VoiceOver, Talkback, and NVDA, covering all the major
platforms.

I haven't tried the service at all, and am going off only what I read on their
website and in the article that pointed me to them in the first place. However,
things look good. If you're in need of this kine of service and you try Zoom,
I'd love to hear what you thought of the experience.

I haven't been following the Citrix thread, so I apologize if this was already
brought up over there.

wordpress VoiceOver content management solutions

2017-04-20 Thread CHUCK REICHEL
Hi List,
What is being used to do content management that is VoiceOver friendly.
I'm looking for a solution "APP" that I can do content management with.
I'm in discussions with a guy who said he can build me a new Sound Picture
Recording site and can put the VoiceOver "tags" in it for accessibility.

I don't use Face book enough to do content management through it at this point.
Also is it true that wordpress offerers a "html template"
Thanks for some direction on building & content management of a new site.
Ps whats the most cost effective "hosting" building solutions out there?
Thanks

Re: How do I find my device ID on a VZ iPhone?

2017-04-20 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Simon,

In my experience, if they want the IMEI, they ask for that. I'm going to
follow Barry's suggestion this morning and take a look in iTunes. If I don't
find it there, then I'll assume you're right. I'm speaking with someone this
afternoon, so if she wants something else, she can tell me.
Cheers,
Donna

Thanks.
Do you have to have a radio or can you just use the app?
I have a free trial now.

Re: How do I find my device ID on a VZ iPhone?

2017-04-20 Thread Scott Granados
I think they mean either the phone name or the name you see when the phone is
in paring mode or attached to iTunes or the serial number under about. If not
that then the IMEI like you mentioned would have been my guess as well.

Re: Sitrix access

2017-04-20 Thread Scott Granados
Like I said, Laziness. Here in the states companies I’ve worked for have been
very willing to install JFW if needed or if not familiar learn about it and
then install. I’ve heard of the security issue popping up but I figure it this
way, having worked for the Air Force and done some projects for the battle
communications group and nuclear munitions group if they were ok with
installing JFW on work stations attached to these networks then pretty much
anyone else shouldn’t have any problems either. Only thing I had to insure was
that I wasn’t using any TTS technology that sent the text off site to a render
farm to have the words spoken, something similar to online google TTS. As long
as everything was in house it was fine. Oh and I had to wear headphones at all
times and don’t mind the marine looking over my shoulder ready to put a bullet
in my head if I made any moves that seemed like I was going all Snoden on
them.;). JFW doesn’t make the network boys in Langley VA uneasy it doesn’t me
as a matter of course. They were more uneasy about me having a personal laptop
that unlocked with Apple Watch than they were JFW.

Whoa Alex that’s good news. That could really help folks on the job front,
especially blind engineers in tech support. Very cool and thanks for the

Accessible web conferencing: zoom.us

2017-04-20 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I saw on Twitter yesterday that a new web conferencing service was discovered
recently: www.zoom.us. The big news here is that they have an accessibility
website (https://zoom.us/accessibility), an email address (acc...@zoom.us), and
a commitment to keeping their product accessible. They claim compatibility with
VoiceOver, Talkback, and NVDA, covering all the major platforms.

That’s such a bogus reason not to install JFW. Especially when you can deploy
it so it only runs for the specific users required. All that is I think is an
IT department to lazy to do their jobs. People bitch about jaws or voice over
and security in the mean time demanding that their favorite messenger or media
player is installed that really does have security concerns. (I’m sorry we
can’t install JFW for you oh and get ready we’re pushing out a new Java virtual
machine). Right!

Not a bad work around though. The only problem is having to run windows, that
would be a deal breaker for me.

Hi David,

Your not working for the university of Otago by any chance are you?

Sounds like the sort of things they’d do.

Mind you they said they don’t know how to setup jaws within the citrix

Good luck and I hope they make things work for you.

I think that you can only get the unique device identification number (UDID) by
connecting to iTunes.
in the summary section, just press the serial number button until it says UDID.

Jaws does speak through Citrix receiver but only if (a) a repeater licemse of
jaws which is free is installed on the Citrix server and your jaws license has
the remote access authorization purchased. Once this is done it works quite
well. On the Mac However I don't know of a solution to make a virtual desktop

Re: Sitrix access

2017-04-20 Thread Scott Granados
That’s such a bogus reason not to install JFW. Especially when you can deploy
it so it only runs for the specific users required. All that is I think is an
IT department to lazy to do their jobs. People bitch about jaws or voice over
and security in the mean time demanding that their favorite messenger or media
player is installed that really does have security concerns. (I’m sorry we
can’t install JFW for you oh and get ready we’re pushing out a new Java virtual
machine). Right!

Not a bad work around though. The only problem is having to run windows, that
would be a deal breaker for me.

Re: Sitrix access

2017-04-20 Thread David Chittenden
Thanks all.

It turns out, the company has two other blind employees. They will not place
JFW on the Citrix do to security concerns. However, the fix is to provide the
blind employee with a laptop which is configured for local access. I then carry
the laptop with me for work. Now, back to Windows 7 after 6 years of Mac and
iOS.

Kind regards,
