Subject: Apple apps: These were the most Popular Apple Apps of 2017

These were the most downloaded Apple apps of 2017 By Jefferson Graham, USA
TODAY Updated 8:12 a.m. PST Dec. 8, 2017

LOS ANGELES - Snap, Inc., the parent company of the Snapchat app, had a rough
first year on Wall Street. Consumers couldn't have cared less.
The Bitmoji app, owned by Snap, came in at No. 1 on Apple's annual list of the
most downloaded free iTunes apps of the year, followed by Snapchat in second
place. Last year, Snapchat was the top app of the year, and Bitmoji, which can
be used to create avatars that slip into Snaps and e-mails, wasn't in the top
10.
As with years past, consumers mostly gravitated towards familiar favorites.
The rest of the top 10 include:
3. YouTube (up from No. 6 in 2016). Video viewing.
4.Facebook Messenger (No. 2 last year). Chat.
5. Instagram (5th place, like in 2016). Photo sharing.
6. Facebook (No. 6 again). Social network.
7. Google Maps (No. 7 again). Navigation.
8. Netflix, (up from No. 9). Video viewing.
9. Spotify (up from No. 10). Music streaming.
10. Uber, which wasn't in the 10 last year.

The only new entry to the top 15 was Wish, a shopping app offering low-price
goods from China, at No. 15.

Last year's new entry to the top 10, Pokemon Go, was a short-lived smash.
This year, it didn't make the top charts, in either the free apps - or the free
games - which were led by Super Mario Run.

Music streaming service Pandora left the top 10 to clock in at No. 12.

Apple apps, like Apple Music and Pages, come pre-loaded on devices, and thus
don't get ranked in Apple's year-end charts.

In making its selections, Apple editors also identified several trends of
2017 worth noting.

Augmented reality apps came to recent iPhones in the fall, with the
introduction of IOS 11. Apple touted the IKEA Place app, from the retailer,
which lets you visualize IKEA furniture in your home, via an animated image and
the video editing app Filmr.

The year saw more mental health, mindfulness and stress reduction apps than
ever before, Apple said. Editors named Calm the app of the year.
On the charts, for the second year in a row, NPR's Fresh Air was the most
downloaded podcast, followed by the Joe Rogan Experience, Stuff You Should
Know, The Dave Ramsey Show and The New York Times' The Daily in the top 5.
This American Life, The TED Radio Hour, Planet Money, Pod Saves America and TED
Talks Daily rounded out the top 10.

Throughout the year, Apple regularly refreshes its chart of the top apps on the
iTunes Store and then ranks them on a year-end chart. It doesn't include sales
statistics.
While most downloads are for free apps, developers make money with either
advertising, selling subscriptions (Netflix and Spotify) or selling add-ons,
which is popular with gaming. According to market research firm AppAnnie, some
$100 million will be spent on apps at both the iTunes and Google Play stores in
2017.

The choices for the top paid iPhone apps were less familiar. These were headed
by Facetune, the $3.99 app that brings Photoshop-like retouching to the iPhone,
followed by Tabs and Chords, which offers guitarists cheat sheets on how to
play popular songs. Also on the list; HotSchedules, for listing work shifts;
the Enlight photo app; and the 7-minute Workout Challenge, the premium version
of the free app.

The top free iPad apps are topped by YouTube, followed by Netflix, Facebook,
Messenger, Google Chrome, Amazon Prime Video, Gmail, YouTube Kids, Amazon and
Spotify.

Google unveiled its end-of-the-year charts earlier in the week but didn't offer
rankings beyond saying that Super Mario Run was the most downloaded game of the
year for Android devices. It also selected five choices for the "most popular"
new apps of 2017. They include:

Photo Editor, for jazzing up images.
What the Forecast, a weather that promises to forecast "how nasty it is
outside."
Boomerang: A subscription service for watching old Bugs Bunny and Co.
cartoons.
Top Buzz Videos: A viral video app.
Yarn. Chat fiction in the form of text messages.

RE: Media and VO volumes with AirPods?

Hi Alex,

On the apple watch now you get a media playing screen when things play on your
phone and one of the options on the screen is a volume which I normally just
flick up / down but will try the digital crown next time

Interesting idea, I'll try that. I don't understand why that works, but
pressing volume buttons when VO is silent or the screen is locked still changes
VO's volume.

other words, despite VO not speaking, turning down loud music turns down
speech. I want to lower the music but keep VO the same. How might I do this? I
always thought VO had to be speaking to be controlled by the volume buttons,
but that's not the case at all. Thanks.

Angus,

ET does point out a big issue and that is space,
CD's do after a while start taking up storage space I've got my 200 sitting in
a cabinet where as my MP3 collection sits both in the cloud and on a shared
harddrive from one of my servers.

So really it's up to what works for you.

As Tim says, no reason that ripping cd's into mp3 will allow you to have access

Hi,

With AirPlay and Bluetooth technologies nowadays, purchasing from iTunes allows
you to share your music with whoever you wish in full stereo or surround sound.
All my music has either been ripped from CD, digitized from LP, or purchased
from iTunes. All songs are able to be played through my two audio receivers
and one sound bar via AirPlay or through via Bluetooth to my Bose Mini 2. The
audio quality from a CD vs the high quality iTunes format is negligible unless
you're using the digital outputs from the CD unit to the receiver. Even then,
unless you're an audio-file, I'm not certain that most people would notice the
difference.

So, in my opinion, after that long-winded reply, I'd probably choose the iTunes
version, but that's just my opinion.

2017-12-10 Thread Karen Lewellen

Tim is correct.
If you desire full uncompressed sound quality, cd and lp is the only way to
go. I will add speaking only for myself, I am enough of an audiophile to
hear the difference between the two as well, with music important
enough to me professionally to keep my cds and keep buying vinyl. The
compressed lesser quality is part of why so much music is being put out on
LP again the market too can hear the difference.
On line music services aim to save space. that means stripping elements
away to make mp3 files.

Just my opinion too,
Kare

So, if you're wanting uncompressed sound quality, then the CD is your only

2017-12-10 Thread Gerry Cook
Hi ET Tim and Chris, I have the issue when i updated to hi sierra, and on
chatting to apple accessibility, they said its a voiceover bug that identifies
folders as groups in column view with voiceover, they claim its just a
terminology, and they say it should be fix in future updates. so when i
changed to list view, i don’t seem to get as much. that’s all the information
i was given. all the best.

Apple apps: These were the most Popular Apple Apps of 2017

2017-12-10 Thread M. Taylor
These were the most downloaded Apple apps of 2017
By Jefferson Graham, USA TODAY Updated 8:12 a.m. PST Dec. 8, 2017

LOS ANGELES - Snap, Inc., the parent company of the Snapchat app, had a
rough first year on Wall Street. Consumers couldn't have cared less.
The Bitmoji app, owned by Snap, came in at No. 1 on Apple's annual list of
the most downloaded free iTunes apps of the year, followed by Snapchat in
second place. Last year, Snapchat was the top app of the year, and Bitmoji,
which can be used to create avatars that slip into Snaps and e-mails, wasn't
in the top 10.
As with years past, consumers mostly gravitated towards familiar favorites.
The rest of the top 10 include:
3. YouTube (up from No. 6 in 2016). Video viewing.
4.Facebook Messenger (No. 2 last year). Chat.
5. Instagram (5th place, like in 2016). Photo sharing.
6. Facebook (No. 6 again). Social network.
7. Google Maps (No. 7 again). Navigation.
8. Netflix, (up from No. 9). Video viewing.
9. Spotify (up from No. 10). Music streaming.
10. Uber, which wasn't in the 10 last year.

The only new entry to the top 15 was Wish, a shopping app offering low-price
goods from China, at No. 15.

Last year's new entry to the top 10, Pokemon Go, was a short-lived smash.
This year, it didn't make the top charts, in either the free apps - or the
free games - which were led by Super Mario Run.

Apple touted the IKEA Place app, from the retailer,
which lets you visualize IKEA furniture in your home, via an animated image
and the video editing app Filmr.

This American Life, The TED Radio Hour, Planet Money, Pod Saves America and
TED Talks Daily rounded out the top 10.

Throughout the year, Apple regularly refreshes its chart of the top apps on
the iTunes Store and then ranks them on a year-end chart. It doesn't include
sales statistics.
While most downloads are for free apps, developers make money with either
advertising, selling subscriptions (Netflix and Spotify) or selling add-ons,
which is popular with gaming. According to market research firm AppAnnie,
some $100 million will be spent on apps at both the iTunes and Google Play
stores in 2017.

The choices for the top paid iPhone apps were less familiar. These were
headed by Facetune, the $3.99 app that brings Photoshop-like retouching to
the iPhone, followed by Tabs and Chords, which offers guitarists cheat
sheets on how to play popular songs. Also on the list; HotSchedules, for
listing work shifts; the Enlight photo app; and the 7-minute Workout
Challenge, the premium version of the free app.

The top free iPad apps are topped by YouTube, followed by Netflix, Facebook,
Messenger, Google Chrome, Amazon Prime Video, Gmail, YouTube Kids, Amazon
and Spotify.

Google unveiled its end-of-the-year charts earlier in the week but didn't
offer rankings beyond saying that Super Mario Run was the most downloaded
game of the year for Android devices. It also selected five choices for the
"most popular" new apps of 2017.

Hello Ramy,

As far as I know, what you are experiencing is unique to your device.

It may be helpful to conduct some test calls to determine what happens
immediately after a reboot of the phone, making certain to clear any apps from
the App-Switcher.

It has been my experience that, regardless of what Apple purports, certain apps
can definitely impede call quality.

Re: iTunes Versus CDs

2017-12-10 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Angus,

Realize that Amazon Music also compresses it's music files. Amazon compresses
music to an high quality mp3 format which according to some does not have as
good of sound quality as the high quality AAC formatted songs that iTunes uses.
So, if you're wanting uncompressed sound quality, then the CD is your only
option. I believe that all the services, Google Play, Amazon Cloud Music and
Apple Music/iTunes Match all digitally compress their music and will also
digitally compress any music that you upload to their Cloud service.

Re: Media and VO volumes with AirPods?

2017-12-10 Thread Alex Hall
Interesting idea, I'll try that. I don't understand why that works, but
pressing volume buttons when VO is silent or the screen is locked still changes
VO's volume.

 Hi again all,
My other major concern with AirPodw is volume. My Aftershokz have onboard
volume control, but now I have to use my phone. I've noticed that VO
volume is adjusted with media volume, even if I change the volume while VO
is silent. In other words, despite VO not speaking, turning down loud
music turns down speech. I want to lower the music but keep VO the same.
How might I do this? I always thought VO had to be speaking to be
controlled by the volume buttons, but that's not the case at all. Thanks.

Re: iTunes Versus CDs

2017-12-10 Thread Tim Kilburn

Re: Media and VO volumes with AirPods?

2017-12-10 Thread Robert Carter
Hi,

When audio is playing on the AirPods from the iPhone. You can open now playing
on Apple Watch and use the Digital Crown on the watch to adjust the volume of
the AirPods. By default, the watch will automatically switch to the now playing
app when something is playing on the iPhone. This behavior can be changed in
settings on the watch.

No, not a bad config, just bad behavior because I didn't respond soon
 enough!

This time I baby sat the install, ready to enter my password at a second's

Sheesh. I haven't had to work this hard on an install since, since, since

Re: Iphone 6 with Ios 11.2 bug

2017-12-10 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Are you sure this is with 11.2? With 11.1 I had significant problems with
gestures being ignored and siri taking more than 10 seconds to respond on my
iPhone 6. I have noticed significant improvements with IOS 11.2, though
sometimes the two finger double tap operation still takes a while to respond.

I am debating if I should call accessibility or stop by the local Apple store
to see if I can get another 10 months out of my phone.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: To Me, Braille is Beautiful in iOS 11.x

Oh goodness, that is pretty bad. I’d just have the phone on in pocket, and
press Space with G twice, then space with lower H twice, then type R on the
Braille display, and there I’d be, in the book. This is with BARD Mobile.

Re: iPhone X cases?

2017-12-10 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Kliph, Simon, and Aleeha,

Thanks for the case suggestions. I've used an OtterBox case before, but like
Kliph, I found it bulky. I was looking at the LifeProof cases yesterday, but
they're expensive, and now that phones are water-resistant, I'm not sure it's
worth the money. I'll take a look at the commuter series, though, to see if
it's any less bulky, and the Apple leather case sounds intriguing. Thanks,
Kliph, for that, I didn't even know Apple made a leather case.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Iphone 6 with Ios 11.2 bug

2017-12-10 Thread Ramy Moustafa
Hi dear:

don't think that it is related to my device, because some people here
even they have the Iphone 5s, they have the same issue.
so, I think it's something in some phones.
but don't know if it's voice over issue or not

Thanks anyway for your interest
